ATISIUP Chapter 56

Po Li played along and asked, “So why should I definitely apply? Did you hear something else?”

Gan Xia grinned, enjoying the suspense. After setting the scene, he said, “I have a friend, whose sister’s aunt’s son works for the government. I got some inside info from him.”

Po Li thought to himself: You really have to stretch the connections that far just to get some news.

He feigned interest.

Seeing that Po Li was engaged, Gan Xia eagerly continued, “Apparently, this mysterious company’s recruitment plan is in direct cooperation with the Imperial government. Not only are they recruiting from our planet, but neighboring planets like XX and XX are also hiring. This isn’t some small-time company, the background is very powerful. The reason they’re keeping the details confidential is for security reasons. Don’t listen to the rumors outside, saying that this company is unreliable.”

Gan Xia made a pause and confidently said, “I can guarantee you, as long as you manage to get hired by this company, your life will be worry-free for the rest of your years.”

He looked as if he was absolutely certain.

Po Li responded, “So, Brother Gan, are you planning to apply as well?”

“I, of course, will apply. Not only that, but I’ll also ask my wife to apply too. If two people go together, the chances of getting the job will be higher.”

Po Li thought to himself for a moment. In the past, government recruitment notices had been much more reliable than other organizations’ announcements. At the very least, they had a standard level. And Gan Xia’s information wasn’t without merit. Then he thought about the tenfold salary, and Po Li decided he would give it his best shot.

Of course, he would later be very glad he made this decision.

“Well then, since that’s the case, Brother Gan, let’s study this recruitment notice thoroughly.”

Once Po Li made his decision, he immediately invited Gan Xia to start preparing.

Time passed quickly, and two days had gone by in the blink of an eye.

During these two days, Lin Huanyan, who was in the Black Hole Research Lab, had consulted the Snow Beast Shop owner about determining the teleportation ability of Dabao. Meanwhile, Po Li and Gan Xia were busy preparing for the job application.

On the morning of the recruitment day, the entire government plaza became bustling.

People from all over the Poyang Star region had already filled several streets near the government building, all eagerly waiting for the recruitment to start.

In the government affairs hall, a group of workers were busy sorting the application forms. Due to the large number of people, they were working hard to meet the deadline.

Finally, at nine o’clock, the doors of the government hall opened, and two staff members walked out.

“Attention, everyone, attention! The initial list for this recruitment has been confirmed and will be displayed on the big screen in the plaza. Please go check it yourself.”

“I’d also like to remind everyone regarding the recruitment list: don’t have any unrealistic expectations. The government has a record on each person, so anyone who has broken the law, committed crimes, or made inappropriate statements will be removed. You know what you’ve done, so don’t come asking why you weren’t selected. If you have further questions, feel free to consult in the government hall.”

Before he could finish, the crowd surged toward the plaza, and Po Li and Gan Xia were swept along with the flow.

Po Li was lucky, as a tall and strong man was ahead, creating a path for him. Po Li didn’t have to work too hard to get into the front.

His area belonged to the Three Water District, so he only needed to check the big screen for that district.

There were many big screens in the plaza, but they were well organized with clear labels, and Po Li quickly found the Three Water District’s screen.

Po Li went through the list, and after checking just a few names, he found his own. Although it was expected, he still let out a sigh of relief.

He continued to check for the names of Gan Xia and his wife, and as expected, their names were also there.

With nothing more to check, Po Li thought of leaving, but it was not as easy as entering. He had to squeeze through the crowd so much that his shoes nearly came off before he finally made it out.

Since the mysterious company needed people urgently, the initial selection list was posted in the morning, and the written test was scheduled for the afternoon.

Po Li decided not to go home and instead waited with the Gan family at a nearby spot.

As soon as the afternoon arrived, people rushed to the exam hall.

Po Li sat on a chair, looking at the test paper he had just received. It was a paper-based test because Poyang Star was too poor to afford electronic devices, so they used paper-based exams.

The paper was thin, yet it would determine people’s futures.

Po Li didn’t dare relax for a second. After carefully writing his name, he began to prepare for the test.

The first question was: How do you plant a plant? Choose any plant and provide a brief analysis.

The second question was: How do you raise an animal? Choose any animal and provide a brief analysis.

The third question was: Have you ever worked in plant cultivation or animal husbandry? If yes, please describe your experience. If not, share your views on this type of work.

Po Li looked at the questions and felt overjoyed. These questions were very friendly to him.

When he was younger, he had worked for several years in gardening, taking care of the garden for a wealthy family on Ricci Star, slowly rising from a small worker to a team leader.

He eventually resigned because the job paid too little, especially after his wife fell ill. He later found a higher-paying but more strenuous job. Unfortunately, his wife couldn’t be saved, and his health nearly deteriorated.

As Po Li reflected on this, his hands moved quickly. He wrote small, filling up the page densely.

He wrote down everything he knew about gardening from his previous experience.

He mostly worked with plants, so he wasn’t very knowledgeable about animals. Moreover, his family had been poor, and he had never had the money to raise animals.

After thinking for a while, he decided to write about the brine shrimp he had purchased, which had cured his illness. Brine shrimp were insects, so they could be considered animals, right?

With that in mind, Po Li wrote about raising brine shrimp, the shop where he bought them, his experience using them, and their effects after use.

Looking around at the others in the exam room, some were frowning in frustration with their pens in hand, some were deep in thought, and others were looking around. However, everyone had their own individual desks with partitions, so it was impossible to see anyone else’s paper. No matter how much they twisted and turned, it wouldn’t help, and the proctors in the back would deduct points if they caught anyone.

The exam paper was thin, and though the questions were short, the required word count for the answers was quite a lot.

This style of exam paper was something Lin Huanyan had brought from Earth.

Back in the day, she was just a college student living day by day, planning to pass her university life quietly.

But in her sophomore year, a sudden change occurred. During a meeting, a college leader unexpectedly proposed an idea: no more multiple-choice or true/false questions in the final exams, and all teachers must implement this immediately.

This was troublesome because what used to be 30 points for true/false questions was now completely eliminated.

Professors had to use fill-in-the-blank, short answer, calculation, and analysis questions, but even for fill-in-the-blank, there couldn’t be too many. So, they just crammed all the points into the calculations. What if the textbook didn’t have enough calculations? They’d stuff them into the short-answer questions.

As a result, Lin Huanyan’s final exam paper was filled with numerous short-answer questions, which nearly made her sick of writing.

Little did she know that she had chosen a science track to avoid memorizing too much, only to find that her rusty brain would need to be put to work in university, staying up late memorizing knowledge points.

The engineering college was full of sighs, with everyone losing more hair than before, setting a new historical record.

This topic may have strayed a bit, but after going through this experience, Lin Huanyan had become more knowledgeable and experienced. This exam paper was truly challenging; if you didn’t have any skills, you really wouldn’t be able to answer it, and there was no room for shortcuts.

An hour passed, and when Po Li finally put down his pen and looked up, there were fewer people in the exam room. Many had not expected the exam to include questions on planting plants and raising animals.

People from Poyang Star were generally busy working to make money, and unless they were really passionate about it, few would spend time on planting or raising animals.

So, when they saw the exam paper, many of them realized they couldn’t answer anything, and they gave up. The remaining people either knew the answers or were trying to write something until the last moment, hoping for a bit of luck.

Po Li quickly glanced around and then lowered his head to double-check his paper. After confirming everything was correct, he stood up and handed in his exam.

He had already written everything he could, and there was no point in trying to guess or make up the rest. It was better to just submit the paper.

Walking out through the main door, there were fewer people than before, but still some clustered in small groups discussing the exam questions.

“Hey, you guys wouldn’t believe it. I went in full of confidence, thinking I’d seen it all with all my years of hard work, but the moment I picked up that paper—plants? Animals?—I was completely dumbfounded. This is definitely not my area of expertise!”

“Same here, same here! I looked at the questions and thought, I have no idea what to write. How do you even grow plants? Dig a hole, put the seed in, sprinkle some water, add some nutrients, cover it with soil. Isn’t that it? And they want a word count?”

“You guys actually wrote something? I just handed in a blank paper. I’m not gonna pass anyway, why bother writing?”

“You’re pretty brave though.”

“So, what about the animals? What did you write?”

“I wrote about my experience raising fish on Ocean Star.”

“I wrote about the bugs I raised when I was a kid.”

“I know that bug story! You used to raise them to scare girls, right? You were such a mischievous kid.”

“Heh, who wasn’t like that back then?”

Po Li didn’t know these people, so he didn’t join in their conversation. He simply walked past them to find the Gan couple.

He didn’t hear anyone mention him after he left, but one of the people in the group suddenly pointed and said, “Did you see that guy who just walked by? He’s the big shot from my exam room, sat right next to me. He saw the questions, then started writing right away. Before I left, I took a peek—oh my God, his paper was covered with dense writing.”
