Wealthy Woof Chapter 4

New goals for dog life

Lu Chenghe had a habit of morning runs and woke up on time with his precise biological clock. As soon as he sat up, his eyes fell on the dog bed at the foot of his bed and the little Samoyed sprawled out in it, sleeping in an utterly ungraceful manner. The puppy’s quietness throughout the night was unexpected and earned a bit of Lu Chenghe’s approval. If this little creature had caused a ruckus during the night, Lu Chenghe wouldn’t have hesitated to throw it out.

However, its sleeping posture was utterly ridiculous. Lu Chenghe couldn’t help but wonder if a professional dog trainer could fix its sleeping position. With that thought, he got up and went to freshen up.

The rustling sounds woke Zuo Ning immediately. He flipped himself over with his stubby little legs and sat up. Having gone to bed too early the previous night, he was wide awake now with his stomach already growling with hunger. Unfortunately, the food in his bowl was rationed, as overeating could harm a dog. He’d already finished everything in the bowl when he woke up hungry in the middle of the night.

Noticing Lu Chenghe getting out of bed, Zuo Ning quickly trotted after him.

When Lu Chenghe went to the bathroom, Zuo Ning sat obediently at the door. When Lu Chenghe started brushing his teeth and washing his face, Zuo Ning sat dutifully by his feet. When Lu Chenghe headed to the walk-in closet to change, Zuo Ning seized the opportunity to scurry into the small cubicle with his designated dog toilet and quickly took care of his own business. Then, he ran back to sit at the closet door.

Before long, Zuo Ning looked up and saw Lu Chenghe emerging from the walk-in closet dressed in sportswear.

Yesterday, Lu Chenghe had been in casual loungewear, but even in such attire, his sharp and commanding aura was hard to ignore. Perhaps it was Zuo Ning’s newfound animal instincts, but he couldn’t help feeling an innate sense of danger whenever he was around Lu Chenghe.

Today, however, Lu Chenghe’s hair was still unkempt. His lively sportswear softened that imposing aura significantly. It was only now that Zuo Ning realized Lu Chenghe wasn’t very old. His figure, though, was remarkable—his slender waist and long, straight legs made Zuo Ning green with envy.

When Lu Chenghe came out of the closet, he noticed the puppy sitting quietly by the door, looking adorably dumbfounded. Seeing it waiting so obediently, a rare smile crossed his face. Without giving Zuo Ning time to react, Lu Chenghe turned and walked out of the room. Zuo Ning quickly followed, his little legs working overtime.

Even though dog food was unappetizing, it was still food. When you’re starving, there’s no room for being picky. Zuo Ning was in no position to complain. He wondered what Lu Chenghe’s breakfast would be and whether he’d get a chance to eat any of it today. Even if he couldn’t, he’d resolve that once he secured his position in this household. He’d one day get to taste human food!

Unaware of Zuo Ning’s ambitious thoughts, Lu Chenghe headed straight for the backyard. The butler and maids were already waiting under the veranda with towels and other items. It was only then that Zuo Ning realized he had vastly underestimated the luxuriousness of this home.

He had thought this was just a large mansion, but now it was clear this was no mansion—it was the kind of estate he’d only ever seen on TV. Who else’s backyard looked like a miniature forest with a massive artificial lake? Am I in some over-the-top Mary Sue drama?

Lu Chenghe, oblivious to Zuo Ning’s wide-eyed amazement, stretched his limbs and glanced down at the puppy. “Stay here. Don’t wander off.”

After giving the command, Lu Chenghe started his morning run. Seeing that Zuo Ning obediently remained seated and didn’t move, he picked up his pace.

Watching Lu Chenghe run off into the distance, Zuo Ning collapsed dramatically onto the ground. Being a dog did have its perks—you could lie down and sleep anytime, anywhere. But he was so, so hungry. Where’s breakfast? This is pure torture.

It felt like an eternity had passed before Zuo Ning finally saw Lu Chenghe running back. Not waiting for the butler or maids to react, Zuo Ning bolted forward, clinging to Lu Chenghe’s leg and whining pitifully, “Awoo~!” Can I eat now? I’m starving to death here!

From the very first glance yesterday, Lu Chenghe could tell that this little puppy was afraid of him. He had never been popular with pets; no matter how friendly a cat or dog was, they would often show signs of fear in his presence. Perhaps it was his natural demeanor, but Lu Chenghe, in turn, avoided interacting with pets. He worried that he might accidentally harm these fragile creatures, so his approach was simple: don’t look, don’t touch, don’t care.

Since this was his way of dealing with pets from a young age, those around him had come to believe he disliked animals. Over time, they rarely brought any pets near him. Thus, the sudden enthusiasm of this little Samoyed came as a surprise to Lu Chenghe.

Taking the towel handed to him by the butler, Lu Chenghe wiped the sweat from his body. He glanced down at the tiny creature still clawing at his leg and bent down to pick it up, carrying it into a nearby bathroom. There was a small bathroom on the first floor specifically for Lu Chenghe to shower after his morning runs, as going back to the bedroom would waste unnecessary time.

Neither Lu Chenghe nor the little Samoyed noticed the butler’s slightly astonished gaze behind them. Could it be that the young master doesn’t dislike pets, but simply hasn’t encountered one he finds appealing? The butler thought to himself. Madam’s judgment is truly exceptional—she managed to pick out a pet that suits the young master perfectly.

Once inside the bathroom, Lu Chenghe set Zuo Ning down on the sofa and pressed a finger against the puppy’s tiny head. “Don’t move.”

Zuo Ning stayed perfectly still, earning a rare smile from Lu Chenghe. “What a clever little thing,” he remarked before stepping into the shower.

Starving to the point of existential crisis, Zuo Ning could only wait miserably. While waiting, he unconsciously started nibbling on his own paw. The soft, meaty paw pads were surprisingly satisfying to bite. Plus, before setting him on the sofa, Lu Chenghe had wiped him down with a damp towel, leaving behind a faintly pleasant fragrance.

When Lu Chenghe came out and saw the puppy lying on the sofa, gnawing on its own paw, his brows furrowed slightly as he walked over. He gave the paw a light slap, neither too hard nor too soft. “Don’t bite. If you keep biting, I won’t feed you.” Eating fur could lead to pica. If it became a habit, it’d be hard to fix later.

To make sure the puppy remembered, Lu Chenghe slapped the paw twice more and pointed at its little black nose. “No eating random things in the future. If you dare, you’ll be punished.”

Instead of being frightened by Lu Chenghe’s stern demeanor, Zuo Ning wagged his tail and let out a soft “Awoo~” before reaching out with his paws to climb onto Lu Chenghe. He wasn’t afraid of Lu Chenghe being strict; at least it showed some emotion. What truly scared him was cold indifference, which made it impossible to figure out what the man was thinking.

Seeing the little thing not the least bit intimidated and still trying to climb on him, Lu Chenghe wasn’t sure if it understood or not. He made a mental note to discuss this with the dog trainer once hired—many pets succumbed to pica. Bad habits had to be corrected early.

Carrying the little Samoyed to the dining room, Lu Chenghe sat down and addressed the butler directly. “Prepare something it can eat—don’t limit it to dog food.”

As the Lu family’s butler, he was naturally highly competent. If he had to wait for explicit instructions for every little task, he wouldn’t have lasted in the household for so many years. Last night, after noticing the young master feeding shrimp meat to the puppy, he had already consulted a pet nutritionist on its diet.

“Understood, young master,” the butler replied. “I’ve contacted a professional pet nutritionist. For breakfast today, we’ve prepared a main course for Little Pudding consisting of minced beef mixed with breadcrumbs and nutritional supplements. Moving forward, its diet won’t be restricted to dog food alone.”

Lu Chenghe nodded in acknowledgment, while Zuo Ning’s ears perked up at the butler’s words. He was suddenly filled with anticipation for breakfast. Never mind anything else—the breadcrumbs alone had to taste better than dog food!

Lu Chenghe didn’t have the food bowl placed on the ground this time but on the chair beside him. When the food bowl was brought over, Zuo Ning’s eyes lit up. Upgrading from dog food to breadcrumbs—this was a breakthrough! And yesterday, he had to eat on the floor, but today he was eating on a chair. His status was clearly on the rise!

As soon as he took a bite of the breadcrumbs mixed with tender beef, Zuo Ning felt an unprecedented urge to cry from being moved by food. Although it still lacked much flavor, it was a hundred times better than dog food! Seeing how much happier the little creature was eating specially prepared food compared to the dog food, Lu Chenghe said to the butler, “As long as it doesn’t affect its health, try to cater to what it likes.”

The butler nodded in acknowledgment. For most people, feeding a dog dog food was simply for convenience. Dog food contains all the nutrients dogs need, making it a healthier choice. But in their household, any necessary nutrients could easily be derived from customized meals. Going forward, there would even be someone specifically assigned to prepare the dog’s food.

If it weren’t for Madam’s sudden whim to get a dog, which left them scrambling unprepared, they wouldn’t have initially fed Little Pudding dog food for the first few days. They were simply worried that sudden dietary changes might upset the puppy’s digestion.

Upon hearing this, Zuo Ning once again resolved to cling tightly to Lu Chenghe. Clearly, having the right person to rely on meant getting to enjoy better food!

After breakfast, as Lu Chenghe prepared to leave for work, he noticed that the little creature had become even clingier. It wouldn’t sit still and kept jumping at him, as if knowing he was about to leave and wasn’t planning to take it along.

However, no matter how easygoing Lu Chenghe could be, there was no way he’d bring a dog to the office. He rarely spoke to pets in a soft tone, but he made an exception, gently telling the clingy little thing to behave and stay put. In the end, the butler had to pick up the puppy and hold it as they saw Lu Chenghe off.

With Lu Chenghe’s attitude, Zuo Ning’s position in the Lu household seemed to be temporarily secure. As long as he didn’t fall out of favor in the future, his life here might even surpass that of some humans.

Looking at the little puppy’s innocent eyes, the butler tapped its nose and said, “You’re really lucky. You’ve got Madam and the young master looking after you. It’s rare for the young master to take such a liking to a pet. You’d better behave yourself and be a good boy, got it?”

Zuo Ning wagged his tail in a restrained manner. Regarding that point, he had long since come to terms with it and was doing his best to achieve it!
