It was a strange feeling for Sanya, one that arrived quickly and left just as fast. Before You Que could ask, he had already taken the initiative to change the topic: “Father is about to finish work and head home, let’s wash up and get ready for dinner.”
This family had lived together for decades, and they were very familiar with each other. Laimi and Laixing’s cooking was always timed just right, and not long after the dishes were placed on the table, Chairman Croney returned, carrying his briefcase.
You Que had “accidentally” shattered two vases today. It was only later that he learned they were Chairman Croney’s favorites, which was why, during dinner, he sat unusually silent by the table.
Chairman Croney hadn’t noticed anything strange at first, but the atmosphere at the dinner table was undeniably odd. Russell didn’t say a word, merely focusing on eating. Laimi and Laixing was the same. You Que didn’t speak either, and Sanya was as quiet as usual.
“…”
Chairman Croney paused his chopsticks, finally noticing something was off. Suddenly, he spoke up, asking, “My lord, I remember there was a vase on the table. Where did it go?”
Russell’s chopsticks trembled, and some food fell off the table.
You Que calmly continued eating; it wasn’t him who had broken the vase.
Russell steadied himself and said, “I accidentally knocked it over.”
However, Chairman Croney wasn’t so easily fooled. Frowning in confusion, he asked, “What about the vase on the hallway cabinet?”
Russell replied, “It got knocked over too.”
Chairman Croney was taken aback. “What about the vase on the display shelf? I remember there was one there as well.”
The two vases had been broken by You Que, and upon hearing this, he couldn’t keep up the pretense any longer. He placed his chopsticks on the table, pondering how to admit his mistake. But before he could say anything, Russell immediately took the fall, not even lifting his head as he said, “They all got broken. I’ll buy a few new ones for you another day.”
This wasn’t about buying new ones, but rather that Chairman Croney disliked waste. With a tone of reproach, he asked, “Why would you break a vase for no reason? And all three at once?”
At this, the other zergs at the table paused their chopsticks, their faces tense as they watched the two of them. Laimi hesitated for a moment, worried about a possible argument between the parents, but eventually spoke the truth: “Father, today the matchmaker from the Marriage Distribution Bureau came again. He asked me and Laixing to go to Lord Marlon’s residence for a blind date tomorrow, and Dad got angry, so he broke the vases…”
Chairman Croney’s heart skipped a beat upon hearing this. “Is it Aegis? He came again?”
Laimi nodded.
Sanya hadn’t quite understood what was going on, but when he heard the familiar surname “Marlon”, he instinctively looked up at Laimi. His silver eyes narrowed slightly, concealing a sharp edge. “Marlon? Which Marlon?”
Laimi hesitated before speaking, “It’s… Beowen’s father…”
Beowen was the male zerg who had once torn off Sanya’s wings, only to be killed by Sanya in the end. His name had become a taboo in the household, never to be mentioned lightly.
Upon hearing this, You Que instinctively placed a hand on Sanya’s shoulder, worried about his emotional state. However, to his surprise, Sanya only slowly tightened his fingers, gripping the chopsticks in his hand. With no detectable emotion, he asked Laimi, “Marlon wants to take both of you as his consorts?”
The familiar zerg could already sense the hidden danger beneath Sanya’s calm tone.
Laimi stiffly nodded.
Laixing, afraid his older brother might get angry, quickly added, “But Lord You Que beat that matchmaker male zerg so badly today that his head was split open. He probably won’t dare show up again anytime soon.”
Laixing was the most cautious among the three brothers. Since You Que moved in, he had hardly spoken to him, but today, when he saw You Que use a vase to bash Aegis’ head open, he finally let down some of his guard and thought that the male chosen by his older brother wasn’t so bad after all.
“What? Aegis was beaten?”
Upon hearing this, Chairman Croney’s expression really changed. An injury to a male zerg was no small matter, and with Aegis having Marlon’s backing, if the other side decided to take legal action, it would turn into a very troublesome lawsuit.
If it had been Laimi and Laixing or his partner Russell who had taken action today, Chairman Croney would have been angry. But since it was You Que, who had only just arrived, he couldn’t reprimand him directly, so he swallowed his words and kept quiet.
Sanya, seeing the worried expression on Chairman Croney’s face, instantly knew what he was thinking. He lowered his head to finish the last bite of rice in his bowl and said in a calm voice, “Head injuries are still mild. If I had been there today, he’d at least be missing an arm and a leg.”
“Sanya!” Chairman Croney slammed the table, genuinely angry this time. His tone was serious as he scolded, “How many times have I told you not to cause trouble? You’ve already paid the price a few years ago—haven’t you had enough yet?!”
“…”
Sanya remained silent upon hearing this. How could he not understand the need for patience? But if he endured everything, it would only lead his two younger brothers down the same path he had taken. Was he really supposed to send Laimi and Laixing to that old geezer as consorts?
Of course not.
Sanya slowly released his clenched fingers, the skin of his palm marked with bloodstains. He didn’t want to argue with his father. Hearing the words, he pulled at the corner of his mouth, offering a light smile as he said, “Don’t worry, I was just speaking carelessly. I won’t make the same mistake again.”
Chairman Croney looked at the mocking smile at the corner of Sanya’s lips, as if wanting to say something but holding back. In the end, no words came out, and the dining room fell back into silence. Above the air, it felt as if something heavy was pressing down on them, suffocating them—both power and helplessness.
The meal ended on a sour note.
Later that evening, when returning to his room, You Que noticed something was off with Sanya. He had been standing by the window, staring blankly. You Que walked over and said, “It was my fault today, I was too impulsive, and it caused an argument. Chairman Croney is just concerned about you, don’t be angry with him.”
Sanya turned at the sound, raising an eyebrow slightly. “It has nothing to do with you. I’ve argued with him often at home before. My father is too strict, and I’m too unruly. It’d be strange if we didn’t argue.”
After speaking, he seemed to remember something, reaching out to hook You Que’s shirt button and pulling him closer. With lowered eyes and a slight smile, he said, “As for you, you’ve got some guts. You actually dared to take action. Next time you get into a fight, remember to strike from behind the scenes. Don’t let it become public; it’ll only backfire.”
You Que leaned against the window sill, pushing Sanya against the glass. He whispered, almost with a sense of awe, “Since I came to the South, I’ve realized just how important power really is.”
Whether it was Sanya or Laimi and Laixing, the beauty they possessed in this era had instead become a kind of sin. Even if their fate wasn’t the worst, it was still a slow and painful survival. And for those whose luck was just a little worse, it meant total destruction.
You Que had never so deeply realized the importance of power until now.
“It is indeed very important, but it’s not the most important.”
Sanya leaned halfway against the windowsill, tilting his head to kiss You Que. He liked the scent on this male zerg; every time You Que gently comforted him and kissed him, it made his mood better.
You Que knew what Sanya wanted and lowered his head to kiss him back. Their lips brushed against each other, tongues meeting, and all the indistinct murmurs were shrouded in a layer of ambiguity. “How about marking you tonight?”
A strong sense of curiosity suddenly rose within You Que, a desperate need to know the answer. Sanya was an A-level female zerg, and if he could successfully mark him, the purity of his blood would be almost entirely verified.
Sanya paused at the words, blinking in confusion. “Are you serious?”
You Que picked him up and walked toward the bed. “No.”
He had already endured for so long, so a little longer wouldn’t matter. Besides, tomorrow they would go to get the ID card, and by then, everything that needed to be known would be clear. There was no need to rush.
The night was quiet, with the cool wind dispersing the clouds. Only the moon cast a faint, hazy glow, half-covering and half-revealing the entwined lovers.
Early the next morning, Sanya took You Que to the military department. To avoid drawing attention, both of them wore white military uniforms, as civilian clothing would stand out too much in the military setting.
Blairand had already cleared the area and arranged for a doctor. When he saw Sanya approaching with a tall male zerg from across the hallway, he vaguely guessed what was going on, barely managing to suppress the impulse rising within him.
Sanya stepped forward to meet Blairand, pointing to You Que as he introduced him. “This is my partner, You Que.”
Then, turning to You Que, he continued, “This is my friend, Major General Blairand.”
You Que paused slightly when he heard the name Blairand, thinking to himself that the name sounded so familiar. Could this zerg be Ah Sui’s partner? He silently observed the blonde, blue-eyed female zerg in front of him, politely nodding. “Thank you for your trouble today.”
While You Que was observing Blairand, Blairand was also subtly watching him. Although the “black hair, black eyes” feature on You Que wasn’t very distinct, his facial features and bone structure, like Ah Sui’s, were unmistakably Eastern, making it highly likely that they came from the same place.
Seeing this, Blairand grew more certain of his thoughts. He gave You Que a slight nod and made a shoulder gesture. “Your Excellency, you’re too polite. The doctor is inside; please follow me.”
Blairand was still quite measured. After guiding You Que inside, he withdrew, sitting outside on a bench to wait, just like Sanya. Whether intentionally or not, he asked, “What do you think… the purity of Lord You Que’s blood will be?”
Sanya sat on the chair with his legs crossed, his posture a bit lazy. He gazed at the dimly lit sky in the distance, seemingly unconcerned as he said, “It doesn’t matter, whatever it is.”
As long as they could get the ID card and marry.
Blairand smiled. “If Lord You Que’s blood purity is higher, it could also benefit your family. Don’t you want to hope for that?”
It wasn’t that Sanya didn’t want to hope, but he felt that even if You Que’s blood purity were at its highest, it would only be a little over thirty percent. As for pureblood, he had never even considered it. It was like how no one in Earth’s future would randomly suspect that someone they knew to be poor was actually a billionaire—such a chance was nearly zero.
Currently, there are only three purebloods in the entire Salaranfa. Even if another one appeared, what were the odds of that rare golden pie falling on your head?
Sanya thought for a moment and said, “Of course, the higher the better. That way, we won’t be bullied.”
As he finished speaking, Sanya suddenly heard footsteps from inside the room. It seemed like You Que had finished the blood draw. He slightly raised his hand to signal Blairand to end the conversation, so that You Que wouldn’t feel pressured upon hearing it.
When You Que came out of the office after the blood draw, he saw Sanya standing up from the bench and asking, “How was it? All done?”
You Que gave a brief reply and tossed the cotton swab he had used to press on the wound into the trash bin. “It’s done. When do you think the results will come out?”
The last sentence was directed at Blairand.
Blairand stood up from the bench and said, “It shouldn’t take too long. If you’re not in a hurry, you can wait for a moment. The results should be ready before noon. Or, if you’d prefer, you can head back, and I’ll give the blood test report directly to Sanya once it’s out.”
Hearing this, Sanya was about to suggest waiting until tomorrow—after all, there was no need to sit here doing nothing for the whole morning. But before he could speak, You Que beat him to it. “It’s fine, I’ll just wait here. It’s only a few hours, it’ll pass quickly.”
Hearing this, Sanya paused and had no choice but to sit down and wait with You Que.
Blairand said, “Then I’ll go in and hurry them along. You and Sanya can rest here for a bit.”
With that, he adjusted his military cap and walked straight into the testing office. The door closed behind him, cutting off everything from the inside.
Normally, a blood purity test would take about two hours to come out, and that’s with the priority of being tested first. After all, the military hospital receives countless blood samples every day. If You Que had to wait in line, the time would probably be pushed back by three days.
But Blairand had specifically cleared the department today, and even the doctor had been arranged in advance, so the efficiency was naturally different.
Two hours later, a blood test report was printed. The doctor held the thin sheet of paper and carefully read through it from top to bottom. When his gaze landed on the final data column, he was so shocked that he sprang out of his seat, knocking over his chair in the process, completely unaware of it. “Major General!”
The doctor’s expression was one of ecstatic joy. Holding the report, he quickly walked over to Blairand, lowered his voice, and excitedly said, “Major General, you were right! That gentleman is actually a pureblood!”
Although there had already been three purebloods in Salaranfa, the appearance of another still thrilled the zergs. After all, the entire empire had a population of hundreds of millions, and the number “four” was still precious and rare.
A pureblood male zerg could optimize the genetic pool of future generations. With one generation after another of selection and refinement, the purity of the Salaranfa male zergs’ blood could soon reach a new level, and their reproduction rate would greatly increase. No wonder the doctor was so excited!
Blairand was worried that someone might tamper with the results, so he had been sitting beside, supervising the whole process. When he heard the doctor’s news, he immediately stood up from his chair, snatched the test report from the doctor’s hand with a “whoosh” sound. Looking at the data column showing “100%” blood purity, a smile finally appeared on his face. “As expected, it’s 100%…”
The South, being weak, had never had much influence among the major tribes. But now, with two pureblood male zergs in their territory, they would have enough leverage and bargaining power when speaking before the Zerg Emperor.
Blairand almost immediately wanted to share this news with Chief Harrington, but then he seemed to remember something, and instead, handed the test report back with a serious expression. “Test it again, just to be sure.”
When Ah Sui’s blood test was retested, it had been done a full ten times, all out of concern for potential errors. With You Que having brown hair and brown eyes, the process needed to be even more cautious.
Hearing this, the doctor quickly went back to conduct the retest. Fortunately, he had received Blairand’s instructions in advance and had drawn two extra vials of blood from You Que, or else it might not have been enough.
You Que and Sanya sat outside, waiting until noon, but there was still no movement from inside. Sanya felt that something was off. He stood up from the bench, placed a hand on You Que’s shoulder, and said, “Stay here and don’t move. I’ll go in and check.”
If it were just a normal test, the results would have been out long ago. With so much time passed and still no results, there was only one possibility…
You Que had an idea of what might be happening, but he didn’t speak up. Instead, he nodded and said, “Go ahead, come out as soon as you can.”
Sanya responded with an “Mm” and pushed the door open. At that moment, the doctor had just finished the fourth retest, and all four results were, without exception, 100%. It was basically confirmed to be correct.
When Sanya walked into the office, he saw Blairand speaking with the doctor, holding a stack of test reports in his hand. He stepped forward and asked, “So, has You Que’s blood purity result come out?”
Blairand paused when he saw Sanya enter, but didn’t answer right away. Instead, he handed him the test report and said, “You can see for yourself.”
He was being a bit mischievous, not answering, which made Sanya’s heart skip a beat. He thought, Could it be that You Que has some blood disease? “What’s going on?” he asked, his tone tense.
Blairand gestured to the paper in his hand. “You’ll know once you look at it.”
Sanya unconsciously furrowed his brows. He quickly flipped through the paper, scanning line by line, afraid he might miss a word, until he reached the very bottom where the data column was. His heartbeat suddenly stopped for a moment, and his pupils contracted in shock. “100%?!”
Seeing this, Sanya’s mind went blank, almost doubting his eyes. “How could You Que’s blood purity be 100%? Did you make a mistake?”
Is it possible 10% was mixed up with 100%?
