“Even if you didn’t mean it that way, that’s how it sounds. We’ve only just met. We don’t know anything about each other. You don’t know what kind of person I am. Saying something like that so easily is thoughtless and irresponsible.”

Kazusa’s rebuttal didn’t faze the man at all.

“I know you’re not a bad person.”

Zero’s confident declaration made Kazusa furrow his eyebrows.

“…What do you mean by that?”

“You realised that Serval, a new patient who walked in, was a Stray Omega. And yet, instead of turning him away, you treated him. I’ve taken Stray Omegas to night clinics before, and unfortunately, there have been on-call doctors who turned them away because they didn’t want the trouble.”

“…Well…”

It was true that such doctors like that did exist. Unlike private practitioners, salaried doctors’ pay wasn’t dependent on the number of patients they saw. So that kind of discretion was up to the individual.

“When you realised the injury might have been connected to something criminal, you could have refused to treat him. But you didn’t. You provided surgical care. I saw Serval’s wound this morning when I was disinfecting it. The suturing was done very neatly. There shouldn’t be a scar. You’re good at what you do.”

Kazusa’s face grew warm under the unfamiliar sensation of being praised so thoroughly.

“You could have reported it to the police without saying anything, but you didn’t. Instead, you took the extra step of checking with me first. You wanted to avoid the possibility of a misreport that might harm your patient, which shows your sense of responsibility as a doctor.”

Kazusa was taken aback. Zero had hit the nail on the head.

He was incredibly perceptive, logical in his thinking, and eloquent in his speech.

He’s not just a pretty face, is he?

Being scrutinised and evaluated so closely by someone as extraordinarily handsome as Zero made Kazusa feel oddly self-conscious. It was as if his back was being tickled.

“…But because of that,” Zero’s voice dropped an octave, becoming more serious.

“You lost everything.”

“…”

The cruel reality hit him. And the heat in his cheeks quickly faded. The excitement he had been feeling cooled down immediately.

“That’s why I decided I will protect you.”

Zero declared this while staring straight at Kazusa. Unable to handle the seemingly serious gaze, Kazusa looked away.

(Don’t be fooled.)

There’s no way a man as striking as Zero could seriously mean to take full responsibility for him.

This man had probably used that face and those words to seduce countless women.

He must be someone with titles like ‘King of the Night’ or ‘Legendary Host’.

If Kazusa didn’t keep his place in mind, he was the one who would get hurt.

(Don’t misunderstand.)

Kazusa harshly warned himself, aware that he might start relying on the strange sense of security Zero gave off.

“Thank you for your concern. But I don’t need any sympathy.”

Kazusa intentionally put on a poker face and rejected Zero in a firm voice.

“Just preparing a place for me to stay temporarily will be more than enough.”

The moment he made his statement, Zero started to argue back. But Kazusa quickly turned his heel, cutting him off.

“―…I’m going to take a shower.”

Two days later, Kazusa moved out of his dorm room.

Since he didn’t have much furniture to begin with, and with Zero’s help (despite Kazusa telling him he could handle it alone, Zero showed up to help anyway), packing was done in a day. Once everything was packed, they rented a small truck and moved the next day.

On moving day, Zero brought along a young man who seemed to be in his late twenties with a refined appearance to help with the move. Thanks to the two of them handling most of the heavy lifting, Kazusa was able to focus on cleaning the room.

While they transported his belongings to the new place, Kazusa had the hospital’s general affairs officer inspect the restored condition of his room and returned the keys. After signing the dorm exit form, the handover of the room was complete.

“I’ve received both the main key and the spare key. Thank you for restoring the room.”

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for me,” Kazusa said as he bowed to the officer who had helped him when he first moved into the dorm. The officer returned the bow, looking like he was about to cry as he said, “Please take care, Sensei.”

Since he worked in general affairs, he knew all about the unfortunate events that had befallen Kazusa.

“You too, take care.”

Kazusa almost teared up but held back, keeping his farewell as light as possible. Though he’d been fired from the hospital and evicted from the dorm, none of it was the fault of the officer. In the end, it wasn’t anyone’s fault.

“Well then, I’ll take my leave.”

“Thank you for your hard work.”

Standing in the dorm’s outdoor parking lot, dressed in casual clothes—a hoodie and sneakers—Kazusa watched the officer head back to the hospital. As the suited figure disappeared from view, Kazusa let out a deep breath, releasing the tension in his shoulders.

He looked up at the hospital building, which stood on the same grounds, and whispered in his heart, Thank you for these past six years, before bowing deeply. After about ten seconds, he straightened up and murmured quietly to himself.

“…It’s over.”

As of today, he had officially been removed from the hospital registry, marking the complete end of his time as a doctor.

Toomine Kazusa, the orthopaedic surgeon, was no more.

Zero and the young helper had already taken all of his furniture and larger belongings to the new place, leaving Kazusa with just a small shoulder bag slung diagonally across his body. Inside that bag was the Omega certificate issued by the Parth Department. Once he submitted this to the National Management Bureau and it was accepted, his official category would be changed. He would be issued a new national ID number, beginning his second life as an Omega. Bureaucratic work being what it was, it would take about three months for the new ID card to be issued.

Given that he needed time to adjust to the new physical and lifestyle demands of being an Omega, this interval might actually be perfect.

He decided to think about a new job once the remaining days of his heat were over. Fortunately, thanks to Zero’s kindness, he had a place to stay for the time being, so he wouldn’t be left homeless.

The issue now was when to inform his family…
