The first time he had gone into heat, he was still classified as a beta. So he hadn’t been taking any. The second time, the effects of the suppressants may have worn off. But today, he had taken his prescribed pill in the morning, and everything had seemed fine until Zero grabbed his arm.

“I don’t know the reason. But it seems that in our case, the pills aren’t enough to stop it,” Zero explained.

“So… contact with you nullifies the effects of the suppressants?” Kazusa muttered, shocked at his own words. His rising body temperature suddenly dropped.

“I had already formed a hypothesis based on the conditions of your previous heats, and now it’s been confirmed,” Zero stated.

(That’s right…) Kazusa realised.

Thinking back, both yesterday when Zero helped him move and today, Zero had kept a noticeable distance between them. No casual touches, no brushes of the shoulder—it had seemed a little distant, even cold. But now, it made sense. Zero had been testing his hypothesis by keeping his distance.

Still, even if he was trying to confirm his theory, shouldn’t he have explained things first before grabbing Kazusa’s arm like that? At least then Kazusa could have mentally prepared himself. Instead, it felt like a sneak attack. The shock of it had his heart still pounding.

(I really can’t handle him…) Kazusa thought, sighing internally.

While he had a newfound respect for Zero in some ways, they still didn’t seem to be compatible.

As Kazusa reflected, Zero asked, “Have you ever heard of anything like this before?”

After taking a deep breath to calm his racing heart, Kazusa shook his head. “No, but I’m not a specialist in reproductive medicine. So… I haven’t come across it.”

“I haven’t either,” Zero replied. “Because of my family background, I’ve developed a certain level of resistance to omega pheromones. Some of the Stray Omegas living here don’t take suppressants, either because of their physiology or preference. But I’ve never been affected by their heats. You were the first one whose heat triggered a reaction in me. That night… I lost control completely.”

Kazusa flushed red as the memory of that night resurfaced—despite his efforts to bury it. Trying to hide his embarrassment, he adjusted his glasses.

“I think it’s likely due to me,” Kazusa said. “I’m a rare case of a Latent Omega who only presented at thirty…”

“You’re certainly an unusual case,” Zero acknowledged. “There’s a good chance other irregularities will come up in the future. We’ll just have to deal with them as they arise. But for now, the best defence is to avoid physical contact.”

Zero said this thoughtfully.

“From what I felt earlier, even if accidental contact happens, as long as we separate quickly, we should be able to prevent the worst-case scenario,” he added.

The mention of their night together as ‘the worst-case scenario’ stung, even though Kazusa knew it was true.

“…Yes, that’s probably for the best,” Kazusa murmured.

So far, the pills only become ineffective when he’s with Zero. After the first onset of his heat, he consulted with a former colleague from the birth department, and there were moments during the moving process when Hawk’s arms or hands brushed against him, but none of those situations triggered an electric shock-like response.

(…Only with Zero does that happen.)

Kazusa reflected on this fact with mixed feelings.

Knowing that the partner is identified is a positive element.

It’s much better than the possibility of the heat becoming ineffective with an unspecified number of people.

As long as he doesn’t come into contact with Zero, he can avoid unforeseen circumstances―――.

Kazusa told himself this and forced his downtrodden mood to lift.

“During the period of your heat, we’ll maintain an appropriate distance from each other. Will that be okay?”

“Yes.”

After confirming the agreement between them, Zero said, “Once you finish unpacking, let me know. I’ll show you around the building.”

“My room is on the top floor.”

He pointed to the ceiling with his thumb and tossed something in Kazusa’s direction. Kazusa opened his hands to catch it. He caught a blue-capped key.

“This is the master key to this room. I’ll keep the spare.”

Zero showed Kazusa the keyring hooked onto his index finger. The stainless steel keyring had a dozen or so keys connected to it, each with caps of different colours—red, blue, yellow, green, purple, and so on. It seemed that the cap colours were different for each room.

“Oh, and I’ll give you a security card too.”

He handed Kazusa a white card the size of a business card and he received it while being mindful of avoiding contact with Zero. The plastic card looked familiar. It was the one Zero had inserted into the slot on the elevator control panel.

“The elevator won’t operate without this card. The only means of moving to the living spaces is the elevator. Always keep it on you and make sure not to lose it.”

“I saw the stairs leading down to the basement on the first floor. But are there no stairs for going up?”

At Kazusa’s inquiry, Zero nodded.

“There’s an emergency stairwell for disasters. But it’s closed during normal times. Only those with a security card can access the living spaces on the second floor and above. For deliveries or packages, please use the delivery box on the first floor. Also, this card serves as a key to enter the shared space on the first floor.”

Kazusa was surprised by how thorough this was. It was on par with the security of a luxury hotel.

“Some residents have escaped from brothels or stalkers. There’s a possibility that pursuers might come after them. It may be inconvenient. But it’s for safety. So I ask for your cooperation.”

From those words, it was clear that Zero was genuinely committed to running the shelter for Stray Omegas, ‘RARE’.

Kazusa himself is an omega. But he’s not a stray omega. Once he completes the transition for his national identification number, he can regularly receive prescriptions for the pills and work normally.

Kazusa doesn’t really have the right to be here. Yet Zero is allowing him to stay out of kindness.

There are still many mysteries surrounding Zero, and Kazusa can’t quite grasp his character, but…

(I should be grateful.)

While savouring the luck of not having to wander the streets, Kazusa nodded, gripping the key and card Zero had given him tightly.

“I understand.”
