While the gym and kitchen had been empty, there were already occupants at the large table here. A young man with long hair tied back and a little girl, who looked about three years old, were sitting together. The young man was feeding the girl, who was sitting on his lap, with a fork. Noticing the newcomers, the girl, who had been munching happily, looked over at them.
“Zero!” she called out in a high-pitched voice typical of small children, waving her tiny hand at him. Zero waved back and walked toward them. The little girl jumped off the young man’s lap, clutching a stuffed rabbit, and ran over to cling to Zero’s leg.
“Misa.”
Even on her tiptoes, the girl’s small hands could only reach just above his knee. “Up!” she begged, and Zero easily lifted her into his arms with a practised motion.
“You’ve got something on your mouth,” he said softly, showing the gentlest expression Kazusa had seen on him so far as he wiped the little girl’s mouth with his thumb.
“What were you eating?”
“A snack! Mama made pancakes and banana juice!”
Kazusa had caught a whiff of something sweet when they entered the kitchen earlier—it must have been the smell of maple syrup on the pancakes.
“They look tasty.”
“Would you like some too, sir? We still have some batter left, so I can whip some up quickly,” the young man offered, smiling warmly as he watched Zero and Misa interact. He was slim and delicate-looking, with a gentle face. Kazusa noted that the little girl seemed to have inherited her pale complexion from him.
“No, give it to him instead,” Zero said, turning toward Kazusa.
“This is the new resident of Room 601.”
With Zero’s introduction, Kazusa stepped forward.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Toomine Kazusa.”
The young man also approached and introduced himself. “Nice to meet you. I’m Gazelle, from Room 201.”
(Gazelle? Isn’t that a kind of herbivorous animal with horns from the savannah?)
After hearing names like ‘Serval’ and ‘Hawk’, Kazusa had found the animal-themed aliases odd at first, but by this point, he was getting used to it. After all, a name is just something to identify someone by—it didn’t really matter what it was.
“I heard from Hawk that we were getting a new resident today. He mentioned that you’re a doctor?”
“I was a doctor,” Kazusa corrected.
“Still, it’s reassuring to have someone with medical knowledge living here. Misa sometimes gets fevers in the middle of the night, and it’s been tough.”
(Gazelle’s daughter must also be a Stray Omega.) Kazusa thought, considering her age, when unexpected fevers and other symptoms were common. It must be incredibly stressful for him, given the difficulty in accessing proper medical care.
“I don’t have any medical equipment. Any diagnosis would be based on symptoms, so…” Kazusa explained realistically, knowing that his abilities were limited to basic diagnostics and treatments akin to home remedies.
“That being said, if your daughter develops a fever or abdominal pain, feel free to consult me anytime, regardless of the hour. Orthopaedics was my specialty, so I can also help with injuries or bruises within my capacity.”
Kazusa kept his offer modest to avoid raising expectations too high. But Gazelle’s face lit up with gratitude.
“Thank you so much!”
Gazelle bowed deeply, leaving Kazusa feeling slightly awkward.
“Ah… no need to thank me. I can’t guarantee how much help I’ll be, but…”
“He’s a skilled doctor. I can guarantee that.”
“Zero.”
Kazusa shot a glare at the man who raised expectations unnecessarily. But Zero remained unfazed, wearing a calm expression as he gently rocked Misa in his arms. He lightly poked her cheeks and said, “That’s great, Misa.”
“Now you don’t have to worry about getting sudden fevers.”
“Hachunech?”
Kazusa turned to the confused Misa and leaned in closer to her small face.
“Hello, Misa-chan. How old are you?”
Her big round eyes stared curiously at his glasses, perhaps because they were something unfamiliar to her. After a brief moment, she held up three fingers.
“Three years old, huh? You can call me Kazusa-ojisan. Is it okay if I call you Misa-chan?”
She pondered for a moment before replying, “That’s okay.”
“This is UsaUsa.”
She introduced the worn-out rabbit plushie she had been holding tightly. It was clear from its appearance that it was her favourite.
“Nice to meet you too, UsaUsa-chan.”
Kazusa lightly grasped the plushie’s small hand and shook it up and down. Misa, satisfied, nodded in approval.
“Kazusa, do you want to eat Mama’s pancakes?”
Her innocent words made Kazusa smile naturally.
“I do! I’m starving.”

As they ate the pancakes Gazelle had kindly made, the four of them—Misa, her parent, Zero, and Kazusa—enjoyed a brief moment of warmth and camaraderie.
Kazusa had always liked children and was used to taking care of them, especially since he had looked after his much younger brother. So he was fairly good at entertaining kids.
Before long, Misa became completely comfortable with Kazusa. As soon as he finished eating his pancakes, she eagerly handed him a picture book, asking, “Read.”
Kazusa indulged her and read the book aloud. The moment he finished, she immediately demanded, “Again,” which was something typical of young children. By the time Kazusa had read the book five times, Gazelle stepped in, saying, “It’s time to go back to our room,” putting a stop to the endless loop.
As they left the communal space, Misa waved her UsaUsa plushie and called out, “Let’s play again, Kazusa, Zero. Bye-bye!”
“Bye-bye, Misa-chan. See you soon.”
“Make sure to listen to your mom and don’t make a fuss when it’s bath time.”
“I don’t wanna take a bath!”
“Misa, really now… Owner, Sensei, thank you so much for playing with her. We’ll take our leave now.”
As they stepped into the elevator, Gazelle nodded politely, holding Misa’s hand.
Standing side by side, Zero and Kazusa watched until the elevator doors closed, and then Kazusa let out a small sigh.
“She’s really cute,” he said, still smiling, his facial muscles unable to relax. Though all children were cute, there was something particularly endearing about Misa.
“Yeah. Misa’s the idol of this place.”
When Kazusa glanced at Zero from the corner of his eye, he saw that even Zero wore a gentle expression.

*Translator’s Note: Little Misa was trying to pronounce ‘hatsunetsu’ (発熱) which means ‘sudden fever’ and UsaUsa originates from Usagi (Rabbit). The child gave a name to her doll. -K
