Apparently, there were factions even among the Stray Omegas. Kazusa thought that Serval’s life in the brothels had to have been tough enough. But it seemed that those from the slums had an even harder existence, and they flaunted it.
“The only person he listens to is the owner. I heard that Lycaon screwed up some shady street gang deal and all three of them got beaten up by the gang. The owner happened to pass by and saved them. Since then, they’ve owed him their lives.”
Serval mentioned it casually. But they were talking about street gangs. Zero had confronted professionals of violence and saved three strangers. It was a daring, life-threatening rescue.
If Kazusa had only heard about Zero building a shelter for the Stray Omegas and using his wealth to help the downtrodden, he might have thought it was an act of charity with some ulterior motive. It’s sad but true that the world is full of villains who hide behind a façade of virtue.
Even after seeing Zero’s shelter, ‘RARE’, firsthand and hearing the residents’ stories, Kazusa couldn’t help but harbour a sliver of doubt—just one percent scepticism. It was hard to shake off.
But hearing now that Zero had risked his life to rescue Lycaon and the others made that last bit of doubt vanish. Kazusa felt ashamed for having doubted Zero, even by one percent.
To have reached such heights of integrity at such a young age… Kazusa’s curiosity about Zero grew uncontrollably.
He pointed to a section of the notebook.
“Here, you wrote that Zero is a ‘Mysterious Guy’… Even for you, who’s known him for a while, he’s still an enigma?”
“Well, I’ve only known him for about two years. Before he ended up in Deep Downtown, no one knows where he came from or what he was doing. Maybe Hawk knows. But he’s tight-lipped about it. Then again, having a mysterious background isn’t that uncommon around here. The story I heard is that about five years ago, Zero started playing piano under that name at a nightclub. He’d take any request from the audience, and with that look of his, the place was packed every night with women, throwing so much cash that the floor would disappear under the tips.”
“…That’s why there was a piano in his room,” Kazusa remarked.
“Yeah, but none of us have ever heard him play. Anyway, within a year, he made enough money to start investing. And in no time, he became the owner of this building. His rise to the top has become legendary around here. Why he decided to build a shelter for Stray Omegas is still a mystery, though.”
“I heard he had an Omega in his family. But he himself said he wasn’t one.”
“Oh, he’s definitely not an Omega. You can just tell. But for a Beta, he has way too much presence. And there’s no way an Alpha would live in a place like this.”
Alphas, being the privileged class, typically lived in the ultra-luxurious Upper Hills, a virtual special zone for them. It was unheard of for an Alpha to live in Downtown, let alone Deep Downtown.
“Maybe he’s from a foreign country,” Kazusa mused, recalling Zero’s exotic looks, his rich brown skin, and striking features.
“Yeah, could be. His bone structure is unreal, and he’s got those killer proportions… Anyway, he’s so mysterious I can’t figure him out.”
Serval frowned and muttered quietly, “The owner… He never sleeps with anyone.”
“…What?”
(But… he ‘did’ sleep with me.)
A sudden thought surfaced in Kazusa’s mind. But he hastily denied it.
That was because of the heat cycle, an uncontrollable situation. It wasn’t as though Zero had slept with him out of affection.
“The residents here, we were all rescued from hell by him. He gave us rooms and jobs that are like a dream, and we even have the chance to think about our futures. That’s why everyone respects him from the bottom of their hearts, and some even admire him. In the past, there were those who genuinely fell in love with him. But the owner treats everyone equally and never gives special treatment to just one person. He’s really strict about that.”
‘RARE’ was home to a diverse group of people—different ages, backgrounds, and genders—who shared only the common experience of being ‘strays’. They lived together as a pseudo-family, bound not by blood but by circumstance.
Under the absolute leadership of Zero, the balance was currently well-maintained. But if Zero were to show favouritism to anyone, that balance would likely collapse in an instant.
Knowing Zero’s sharp mind, Kazusa was sure he understood that.
“Some even tried to throw themselves at him by purposely not taking suppressants and charging at him full of Omega pheromones. But he didn’t react at all. Apparently, he’s immune to Omega pheromones. Isn’t that amazing? What a cheat, right? I mean, with this many Omegas around, someone’s always in heat. Without that kind of control, he’d probably lose his mind. Either that or he’s neutered or impotent,” Serval joked.
Kazusa, of course, knew firsthand that Zero was neither neutered nor impotent, but he couldn’t say that out loud.
Despite the conversation, Zero’s background remained a mystery. But Kazusa now fully grasped how risky it was for Zero to interact with him. He couldn’t allow his heat to break Zero’s self-control and disrupt the peace and harmony of ‘RARE’.
(I absolutely won’t let that happen.)
With a firm resolution in his heart, Kazusa closed his notebook and expressed his gratitude to Serval.
“Thank you for telling me all of this. It was really helpful.”

From the following day, Kazusa began working in the lounge as a trainee. Zero had judged that it would be too difficult to have him start as a cast member right away, so he was assigned to work as a hall staff and kitchen assistant first.
His training was led by Zero, Hawk, and the other hall and kitchen staff. Most of them were veteran Betas from the nearby area who had worked there for over three years.
On the first day, Kazusa mainly assisted with hall duties. The lounge opened at six and closed at midnight, with two shifts: one starting at six and the second at nine, with a full reset between shifts.
