FRGL chapter 89

Addiction

Hearing those words, Luo Hai felt a sense of foreboding rise in his chest.

He grabbed Eugene by the collar, his voice tightening in his throat. “What did you say?”

Eugene pursed his lips, straightened up, and actively took a step back. The temperature in the air dropped a little with his small retreat, and Luo Hai frowned, reaching out to hook his neck, forcing Eugene to make eye contact with him again.

“Explain. What happened? What do you know?”

Eugene raised his hand to grip Luo Hai’s forearm, tightening his hold until it was almost painful. Finally, he spoke quietly. “There are people in the Lightwing council who, for strategic reasons, think it’s risky to hand over the core part of the final plan to you.”

“I can understand that,” Luo Hai said, still holding onto his neck. “And then?”

“Although I know they will support my decision no matter what, to make them feel at ease, I did a little investigation,” Eugene lowered his eyelids. “About your experiences in Nantes over the past fifteen years, and the reason Doyle chose to take you away.”

Luo Hai froze, unable to move a finger for a long time.

Of course, he knew that Eugene would find out about this one day. In fact, he had never planned to hide it from Eugene. He always thought that, sooner or later, he would find the right time and opportunity to tell him that bloody story from over a decade ago.

In his imagination, it should have been a sunny afternoon, after everything had settled down, and he and Eugene would sit comfortably in that small yard with the osmanthus tree, bathing in the warm sunshine and the fragrance of the flowers. By then, he would no longer feel his heart twist with pain when he thought about that past, no longer fear nightmares one after another. So when he told Eugene the truth, it would be with a smile and a sense of relief, as if recounting a distant story.

That’s why he kept postponing it, delaying telling Eugene the truth.

He always thought it would be much later, but he forgot that everything that had happened would leave marks, no matter how much he wished for it to disappear.

After a long pause, Luo Hai finally regained his sense of his body. He slowly tightened his grip on Eugene’s neck, whispering, “Is it because of this?”

Eugene’s pupils contracted sharply. He suddenly pushed Luo Hai down onto the sofa, fury almost bursting from his eyes. “‘Because of this’? What do you mean ‘because of this’? For so long, I’ve always thought— you never told me anything, I don’t know anything!”

“It’s not a big deal.” Luo Hai interrupted him gently, reaching up to pinch his cheek. “I’m an Omega. Most Omegas have gone through similar things, and it’s been a long time already. It’s really nothing worth mentioning.”

Eugene felt his heart almost shatter. Luo Hai’s gentle voice was pulling at his flesh and bones, each tug was painful enough to leave him gasping for air.

Luo Hai was comforting him. After going through hell on earth, Luo Hai was now soothing him with a tone of casualness.

Fifteen years ago, Luo Hai was just a child, yet he had to endure such a long and lonely torment while losing everything. Eugene couldn’t even imagine how much excruciating pain he must have endured to survive in that environment.

He had come too late.

Too late, too late.

If he had heard about him sooner, if he had found him sooner, protected him, brought him home… Would things have been different? Would the pain he endured have been alleviated?

Perhaps sensing the pain in Eugene’s eyes, Luo Hai gently cupped his chin, his lips curling into a small smile. He relaxed, saying, “Or are you disgusted with me now? Do you think that because others have touched me, I no longer belong to you?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, Eugene suddenly grabbed Luo Hai’s wrist and forcefully pressed him into the sofa. Luo Hai let out a sharp cry of pain, about to struggle, but then met Eugene’s reddened eyes and the fury in his gaze.

“Never, never make that kind of joke with me.” Eugene said in a low voice, “Your pain will never be insignificant to me, because I care, because it would break my heart. But I’d rather have my heart broken than for you to hide it from me, lie to me, and pretend to be fine while biting back the pain and despair on your own. Do you understand?”

Luo Hai stared blankly at Eugene, blinking his eyes, feeling something wet roll down from his eyes and trail down his cheek.

Eugene moved closer, kissing the tear away from Luo Hai’s cheek. Luo Hai turned his head, biting Eugene’s lip, tasting a faint salty bitterness from the tender flesh.

The sky had completely darkened, the moon rising slowly, casting faint light through the window and onto the apartment floor, shrouding the two people locked in a passionate kiss in shadows.

Luo Hai could feel Eugene restraining himself. The pheromones of an Alpha in their susceptibility period should have been more intense than this. Moreover, this was Eugene—Luo Hai had already witnessed how he acted when he lost control.

In the midst of their heated kiss, Luo Hai’s tongue brushed against Eugene’s sharp canine tooth, sending a shiver through Eugene’s body. He instinctively tried to pull away.

Luo Hai didn’t give him that chance. He followed him, his voice hoarse, carrying a seductive edge. “No holding back, give it all to me.”

Eugene inhaled sharply, gripping Luo Hai’s arm so tightly that veins bulged on his hand. After a long moment, he lifted his head, gasping for air, looking almost pitiable—like a little dog drenched in the rain.

“You’ll be in pain… since you’re using the drug…”

Luo Hai squinted, raising his long leg to straddle Eugene’s waist, his hair damp with sweat, sticking to his temple. He leaned down and lowered his voice. “Have I not been in pain with you before? You’ve already made me addicted.”

The words felt like the key to Pandora’s box, causing the suppressed Alpha’s eyes to redden. The apartment was suddenly filled with the overwhelming scent of gin, enough to intoxicate every creature in the space, making them fall into a dreamlike daze.

Luo Hai’s memories of that night were like strong liquor—scalding, intense, fragmented.

He couldn’t count how many times he had climaxed, how much pain or pleasure there had been, nor could he remember how many times Eugene had kissed him gently, or how long he had been roughly pinned against the wall.

By the time it was over, every corner of the apartment that could hold their scent had been thoroughly marked. If the prosecutors were to barge in at that moment, every inch of flooring and wall would serve as evidence of Luo Hai’s collusion with the enemy.

In the end, Eugene carried him back to the bedroom. They lay side by side on the slightly narrow bed, their breathing gradually evening out, blending with the soft breeze outside the window. For a long time, neither of them spoke.

Luo Hai was exhausted to the extreme. Every cell in his body screamed for rest, yet the more his body craved sleep, the sharper his mind became—he couldn’t bear to waste even a second in slumber.

Because Eugene, lying beside him, felt like a rare and fleeting dream. If he closed his eyes, he feared that upon waking, Eugene would be gone.

The Alpha, finally past his susceptibility period, seemed much calmer, his pheromones significantly subdued. Eyes closed, he buried his head into Luo Hai’s neck, but his steady breathing betrayed the fact that he wasn’t asleep.

Luo Hai lifted a hand, running his fingers through Eugene’s slightly curled blond hair, gently untangling any knots he encountered.

Eugene tightened his arm around Luo Hai, clinging to him like a possessive animal unwilling to let go. After a long pause, he finally opened his eyes, his voice muffled. “The ones who touched you—I’ll get rid of them all, one by one.”

Luo Hai chuckled softly. “It’s not as bad as you think. Most of them are already dead, and the rest have been exiled to remote, godforsaken places where they’ll never return.”

“What about Colette Doyle?” Eugene’s voice dropped lower as he pinched Luo Hai’s chin between his thumb and forefinger. “He’s been by your side all these years.”

Eugene’s unrestrained jealousy amused Luo Hai. He tilted his head upward under Eugene’s grip, placing his hand over Eugene’s. “Then I’ll let you kill him yourself. How about that?”

A playful smirk lingered on Luo Hai’s lips, light and casual as if they were discussing the weather, yet at the same time, he carried the allure of a devil whispering temptation. Eugene couldn’t resist leaning down for another deep kiss, and only then did the storm of negative emotions within him begin to settle.

“If only I had found you sooner…” Eugene murmured, pressing his forehead against Luo Hai’s.

Luo Hai remained silent for a moment before replying, “For a long time, I thought you were dead. Doyle burned the entire orphanage to the ground—I never imagined you could have escaped.”

Eugene let out a faint chuckle. “The day you were taken, I had snuck out through a hole in the backyard fence. Even Auntie Ai didn’t know. I was going to find you because you promised to bring me candy, but you never came back.”

Luo Hai closed his eyes, exhaling softly.

“When I returned, the orphanage was already engulfed in flames. Everyone inside had turned to ashes. I thought you were among them. I dug through the ruins with my bare hands, flipped over every single charred body, searching every last corner—until someone finally told me that you had been taken away by a group of towering Alphas.”

Eugene lightly tapped his finger against Luo Hai’s cheek, his tone as soft and distant as stars veiled behind drifting clouds. “So I started following every strange Alpha I saw on the streets. I slept and ate with the beggars, asking them for information. When I had no money for food, I took on any odd jobs I could find. When no one would hire me, I taught myself whatever skills I could. I traveled through Renner, Lorient, Marwen, Duhaat… I went through all eighteen cities near Fuba Port, searching for any trace of you in every industry.”

Luo Hai’s throat tightened. “Did you never consider that I might have already been dead?”

Eugene smiled faintly. “Almost everyone around me told me that. They said Omegas taken by Alphas never met a good end. Even if you weren’t dead then, after so many years, you definitely wouldn’t still be alive. They told me to buy a burial plot, build a gravestone, and let go of the past.”

“But I never believed them. Not even once. I knew you were still alive. And if I just kept searching, I would find you.”

“Why?” Luo Hai’s voice was hoarse.

“Because you promised me,” Eugene lowered his gaze, grasping Luo Hai’s hand and pressing a kiss to the back of it. “You said you’d come back and bring me candy.”
