Kazusa was perplexed by the hostile glare from someone he was meeting for the first time, as though he were facing a mortal enemy. The intense, predatory aura made him believe the story about Lycaon attacking Serval with a knife.
(This is awkward...)
A prickling sensation ran down Kazusa’s neck from the tense atmosphere. Unable to bear the uncomfortable silence, he accidentally blurted out something unnecessary.
“…So, you’re off suspension now?”
“Yeah!”
Lycaon suddenly barked in anger, stepping closer—Kazusa found himself staring at a furious face directly in front of him. The intensity of Lycaon’s glare was overwhelming, and Kazusa instinctively took a step back.
“I-I’m sorry! I just heard you were under suspension, so…”
“So what?”
“I-I thought I’d say, if you’re coming back to the lounge starting today, let’s work well together.”
Kazusa’s voice cracked as he tried to explain, while Lycaon turned to the side and spat on the ground.
“As if I’d work well with the likes of you.”
With that low, disdainful remark, Lycaon shot Kazusa another glare before turning on his heel. He strode toward the elevator, shoulders stiff and towering, and slammed his fist on the call button. When the doors opened, he got in without looking back.
Kazusa had been frozen, holding his breath, until the moment the elevator doors closed. Only then did he exhale, releasing the air from his lungs with a “…Haaa.”
“…Why did I have to mention the suspension? Stupid.”
It was a truly unnecessary comment. They probably wouldn’t have gotten along anyway, but now he had made things worse.
“He definitely hates me now. Ugh… stupid, stupid!”
Kazusa slapped his temples lightly with his palms and let out a long sigh.
There was no undoing what had been done. He would have to apologise at some point.
However, that opportunity didn’t come during the day. When the pre-opening meeting came around, Kazusa spotted Lycaon in the lineup. But he was hanging out with Fossa and Jackal from the slums group, making it difficult to approach.
“Good morning. Today’s topic: Lycaon is returning to work starting tonight.”
Zero, standing in front of the day’s shift members, announced Lycaon’s return to ‘Night Safari’
Unlike the situation with Serval, there was no applause, and the atmosphere wasn’t particularly welcoming. However, Fossa and Jackal seemed pleased about their boss’s return.
“Hey, we’ve been waiting for you, brother.”
“Kept you waiting, brother.”
“We missed you, brother.”
The three of them exchanged a complex handshake, looking excited.
Kazusa had heard that Serval and Lycaon were the top two in sales (though it was a mystery how Lycaon could manage customer service with that personality, Kazusa supposed that with such stunning looks, some customers would be satisfied just by watching him). So his return should be a positive development for the lounge.
“Lycaon, you’re just coming off suspension. And I’m sure you know this, but there won’t be a second chance.”
Lycaon, who had just been firmly reminded by Zero, nodded with an uncharacteristic display of humility, saying, “…Yes.”
It was hard to believe that this was the same person who had been so aggressively hostile toward him in front of the elevator earlier that day.
Serval had mentioned that Lycaon was absolutely obedient only to Zero, the one who had saved him. That seemed to be true.
“Serval, you’re good too, right? Don’t forget you were at fault as well.”
“Yes, I understand.”
Serval also responded seriously, with a solemn expression.
“Tonight, we have six guests in the first session and six in the second session. One of the second-session guests has reserved the VIP room. As always, let’s provide our guests with a momentary escape from their daily lives with careful and sincere service. That’s all. Dismissed.”
With Zero’s closing remarks, the staff dispersed in small groups.
“Serval, sorry for the trouble yesterday. Looking forward to working with you again tonight.”
Kazusa called out to Serval, who was standing next to him, as they were assigned to assist together again that night.
“Same here. By the way, you’ve been working non-stop since the training shift. You holding up okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. I slept well last night. I want to get as many shifts as I can to learn the job quickly.”
“Huh? You suddenly sound so motivated! Weren’t you totally down in the dumps last night? Did something happen after that?”
Kazusa flinched at the sharp question but quickly feigned composure and brushed it off, saying, “Not really…”
Even though it was Serval, he couldn’t bring himself to mention that he had spent several hours alone with Zero in his room.
“Hmm… Well, whatever. Let’s make up for last night, partner.”
Serval threw his right arm around Kazusa’s shoulders.
With Zero’s encouragement from the previous night still fresh in his mind, Kazusa was able to approach his tasks with a renewed sense of purpose. He managed to assist Serval without making any major mistakes.
“Good work! I’ve got an after-hours engagement tonight, so you can clock out early.”
“Got it. Just remember, no alcohol.”
“I know, Sensei. Don’t worry.”
“I’m not a doctor anymore. See you tomorrow.”
After seeing Serval off, Kazusa headed toward the back of the first basement level, where the employee backroom was located.
The employee backroom was divided into two spaces: a break area for relaxation and a locker area for changing clothes.
Reflecting on the night’s work, mentally noting what he could improve, Kazusa arrived at the backroom and opened the door. From behind a wall of potted plants just inside, he could hear multiple voices laughing in the break area. They were probably chatting, relieved that the night’s work was over.
Kazusa was about to head straight to the locker area when the sudden silence in the voices caught his attention. Feeling something was off, he stopped in his tracks and peeked through the plants into the break area.
He gasped.
Lycaon, the silver-haired man with the coyote tattoo, was lounging on the sofa, his legs kicked up over the armrest.
Sitting cross-legged on the floor was Fossa, with his soft mohawk and nose piercing.
Also lying face down on the floor was Jackal, his cornrows dyed in seven colours.
Each of them was holding a can of beer, suggesting they were celebrating Lycaon’s return.
