Chapter 36
Chi Suinian’s cheeks burned with heat as he quickly tossed the phone back to Lu Zhiyue. “Why haven’t you changed the background yet?”
“I forgot,” Lu Zhiyue said casually.
Forgot, my ass.
If he still believed this kind of nonsense from Lu Zhiyue, he’d really be a fool.
Chi Suinian frowned impatiently. “Change it now!”
“I’m busy right now.” Lu Zhiyue thought for a second, then handed him the phone. “Why don’t you change it for me?”
Chi Suinian hesitated for a few seconds before snatching the phone. “Password.”
“231029.”
Chi Suinian entered the numbers, noting that they looked like a date—roughly a year ago.
What could’ve happened a year ago that was important enough for Lu Zhiyue to remember so clearly…
Suddenly, a thought popped into Chi Suinian’s mind: anniversary.
The idea startled him.
Right then, the password unlocked the phone, and an ambiguous photo burst onto the screen—an intimate, borderline explicit pic of Lu Zhiyue—catching him completely off guard.
Chi Suinian: “……”
Burns the eyes.
Trying to steady his heartbeat, he quickly opened the photo gallery.
There weren’t many pictures stored on Lu Zhiyue’s phone, just some temp files and the photos the girl had sent earlier.
At some point, a new album had been created—just pictures of the two of them.
A quick glance, and it was all pink bubbles and soft lighting.
Chi Suinian: “……”
Crap photography skills—he’s doomed.
Face darkening, Chi Suinian deleted every photo in the album, emptied the trash, then randomly searched the web and replaced the wallpaper with a generic image.
He threw the phone back. “This background suits you. Change it again and I’ll smash your phone.”
Lu Zhiyue paused his work, glanced at the phone now lying beside him, and raised an intrigued eyebrow.
He had some hope for Chi Suinian’s aesthetic taste.
There were only a few pictures in his gallery—he wondered if he had picked his favorite.
He flipped the phone over and lit up the screen.
In the next second, a golden, majestic statue of Buddha appeared, gazing back at him with serene compassion.
Lu Zhiyue: “……”
Chi Suinian shot a sideways glance, seeing Lu Zhiyue frozen with the phone in hand, a speechless expression on his face.
He snorted coldly, suppressing a laugh.
Fools like you should be praying more.
“So you like this kind of background,” Lu Zhiyue said, tapping on the screen. Then his tone shifted, “Why did you delete all my photos?”
Chi Suinian replied coolly, “I deleted my own photos. What’s it to you?”
“There were pictures of me in there too.”
“You were only half in them!”
“……”
Lu Zhiyue sighed, then silently opened WeChat and found the contact he had just added.
[Please send me those photos again. Preferably in high resolution.]
The reply came quickly:
[High-res versions might take a bit more time. I can probably send them tomorrow.]
[Okay.]
·
The swelling on Chi Suinian’s foot had gone down by the next day, and their booked stay was over. Since they hadn’t extended it, they started packing to head back to the city.
“You’re leaving already?” Lin Weixing showed up at the top-floor suite as soon as he got the news. “You’ve been here for a while, and I haven’t even had the chance to properly host you! There’s a bonfire party and fireworks tonight. Stay a couple more days.”
In the restaurant, Lu Heng raised his glass with a loud laugh. “This trip was rushed. Next time, I’ll bring some friends along and really liven the place up for you.”
Lin Weixing raised his glass too, but his eyes subtly drifted toward Chi Suinian.
Chi Suinian was focused on eating—the chef at this Chinese restaurant was excellent, and every dish suited his taste perfectly.
He was so absorbed in the food that he didn’t even notice Lin Weixing watching him.
Just then, a bowl of freshly peeled shrimp was placed beside him. Chi Suinian looked up in confusion.
“Didn’t you want some?” Lu Zhiyue said as he wiped his hands with a tissue. “You’ve been eyeing it for a while.”
“……”
It was true he’d been eyeing it. He wanted to eat, but couldn’t be bothered peeling them himself, so he’d kept hesitating.
How did Lu Zhiyue even notice?
Chi Suinian glanced at him indifferently. He was about to stubbornly refuse when he saw Lu Zhiyue picking up two crabs and getting out the tools to crack them.
His hands were so pretty—they made everything he did look elegant, even cracking open crabs.
Chi Suinian swallowed the words he was about to say and popped a shrimp into his mouth.
After a while, he muttered, “Stop peeling. I don’t eat crab.”
Lu Zhiyue glanced at his own bowl, then at Chi Suinian. Suddenly he smirked, “These are for me.”
Chi Suinian: “……”
His ears turned bright red.
“Just kidding,” Lu Zhiyue chuckled and offered him the crab meat. “I don’t like seafood. You eat more.”
Chi Suinian: “……”
Eat your dad. What kind of teasing is this?
Still, with someone willing to peel shrimp and crack crabs for him, Chi Suinian was happy to accept. He pulled both bowls toward himself and started eating, chewing the shrimp like it was Lu Zhiyue’s flesh.
Bite that bastard Lu to death.
Lu Zhiyue thought he was absolutely adorable and suddenly had the urge to ruffle his hair.
But his hands were still covered in crab and shrimp, and if he touched Chi Suinian now, the consequences might be too serious to fix.
So he reluctantly held back.
Across the table, Lin Weixing had been watching their interaction the whole time. A strange feeling was growing stronger in his chest.
Good friends peeling shrimp for each other? Nothing odd.
Cracking crabs? Still fine.
But why did these two look so… intimately indifferent to everyone else around them?
After the meal, just as everyone was getting ready to leave, Lin Weixing suddenly said, “So you’re the President Lu from the Lu Group. No wonder you booked out the whole resort in one go.”
His words were so sudden that everyone froze on the spot.
Lu Heng looked at him, confused. “What are you talking about?”
Tang Jin, always quick to sense subtle changes in the atmosphere, immediately felt something was off. His face darkened.
If Lin Weixing had gone straight to the point and confessed openly to Chi Suinian, Tang Jin might’ve even respected him as a man.
But instead, he was playing these underhanded games—really low.
“It’s getting late. Let’s talk next time,” Tang Jin stepped in between the group. “The weather forecast says it’ll rain in the afternoon. If we don’t leave now, we’ll get caught in the dark.” He turned to the staff. “Check, please.”
“You guys still don’t know?” Lin Weixing smiled faintly, continuing, “Two days ago, a big client booked the entire resort. Didn’t even stay in the rooms—just went to squeeze into someone else’s. Interesting, right?”
Lu Heng’s eyes flickered—now he got it. His face changed.
Chi Suinian turned to look at Lu Zhiyue, only to see him calm and unaffected, as if being exposed didn’t faze him. His expression was cool, showing no emotion at all.
“Suinian, I bet you didn’t even know about this,” Lin Weixing turned to him. “When I heard all the rooms were booked, I found it strange. It’s not tourist season, no holidays, so where’d all the guests come from? So I checked the booking records—turns out they were all reserved under one name, someone working at Lu Corporation. Clearly Lu Zhiyue’s doing.”
“As for why he booked all the rooms and still chose to bunk with you… I don’t think I need to spell it out.”
The atmosphere grew even tenser.
Lu Heng and Tang Jin exchanged a look. They both thought—uh oh, this might blow up.
Sure enough, Chi Suinian frowned and asked, “You did this?”
Lu Zhiyue was caught off guard for a second. “Half, maybe.”
Chi Suinian: “?”
It’s either yes or no. What the hell is half?
Lu Zhiyue explained calmly, “The company was planning a team-building retreat this week. This resort was one of the options. I thought it was nice, so I booked it. So… half?”
“You’re full of crap—” Lin Weixing tried to interject, but Lu Heng quickly covered his mouth and dragged him away. “Well, you guys go pack up first. I’ve got something to discuss with Lin Weixing.”
Chi Suinian stood up. “Alright, let’s go.”
Tang Jin: “?”
Just like that? He believed it that easily?
Lin Weixing pulled away from Lu Heng’s hand and snapped, “You’re seriously believing him? Lu Zhiyue clearly has an agenda. Don’t get fooled.”
Chi Suinian, now annoyed, stopped in his tracks and coldly cut him off, “I let him stay in my room. Got a problem with that?”
Lin Weixing was stunned speechless. “……”
Chi Suinian looked away, clearly done with the conversation. He impatiently kicked Lu Zhiyue’s chair. “You coming or not?”
Lu Zhiyue blinked for a second, then said, “Coming.”
·
Outside the restaurant, Chi Suinian marched forward without a word, his expression stiff.
Lu Zhiyue walked beside him in silence under the blazing summer sun, his gaze clearly fixed on him.
After a few moments, Chi Suinian couldn’t take it anymore and turned to snap, “Why are you staring at me?”
Lu Zhiyue replied, “Sorry. I didn’t mean to lie to you.”
Chi Suinian let out a sarcastic laugh. “Even you don’t believe that.”
Lu Zhiyue suddenly chuckled softly. “Alright, fine. I did it on purpose.”
Chi Suinian glared at him murderously.
Knew it. Nothing good ever comes from this guy.
When his laugh faded, Lu Zhiyue lifted his gaze and, for once, spoke seriously:“I wanted to share a room with you. That’s why I had the others book out the rest.”
“…………”
So he did admit it—
Lu Zhiyue continued, “I wanted to be close to you. And I don’t want our marriage to last just three years. I want to do everything I can… to treat you well.”
Chi Suinian had just raised his fist, but after hearing that, he slowly lowered it again. “……”
Okay, what? This is… not where he thought this was going.
“These past few weeks since you were discharged, I thought I was being obvious,” Lu Zhiyue said. “But it seems like you didn’t notice.”
“……”
Notice what?
Chi Suinian blinked, utterly confused.
Also, what’s with Lu Zhiyue suddenly sounding like he’s about to confess?
“I mean, I like—”
Before he could finish, footsteps approached from behind. Chi Suinian’s face turned pale with panic. He lunged forward and slapped a hand over Lu Zhiyue’s mouth.
“Shut up!”
A group of girls walked past, cheeks flushed, giggling as they looked back at the two of them. Their faces lit with teasing excitement.
“……”
Lu Zhiyue tilted his head slightly, his breath brushing against Chi Suinian’s palm.
Chi Suinian felt like his whole hand went numb. His cheeks down to his neck flushed bright red.
“If you keep talking nonsense, I swear I’ll tear your mouth off,” he growled.
He’d said that plenty of times before, but Lu Zhiyue had never seen him follow through.
Lu Zhiyue just smiled with his eyes, letting him cover his mouth.
They were still surrounded by tourists, so it wasn’t convenient to talk. Chi Suinian dragged Lu Zhiyue into a more secluded spot and, still red in the ears, snapped, “Lu Zhiyue, are you insane—”
“Don’t be mad.”
Chi Suinian felt his cheek get lightly pinched.
“I’m the one confessing. I should be the one nervous,” Lu Zhiyue looked straight at him. “What are you getting so worked up for?”
Chi Suinian: “…………”
Okay, sure, that makes sense…
But why does this all feel… so damn weird?
