“—Number 119, you may come collect your report.”
Hearing the announcement, Shi Qi put away his phone, setting aside the chaotic family group chat for the moment. “Let’s go?”
Shang Sui nodded and followed him into the consultation room.
Inside, a doctor was waiting to explain the results. Before Shi Qi even stepped fully into the room, a heartfelt voice rang out, “Congratulations!”
Shi Qi froze mid-step, almost thinking he’d walked into the marriage registration office by mistake.
Seeing his puzzled expression, the doctor smiled and clarified, “Your compatibility is astonishing—an extremely rare 100%.”
The nurse behind them chimed in with congratulations as well. “Congrats! This is the first time our hospital has ever recorded such a high compatibility! We even thought the machine was broken and ran the test twice.”
100%…?
Shi Qi felt a bit dazed and instinctively glanced at Shang Sui. Shang Sui happened to be looking down at him too, seemingly just as surprised.
Noticing this, the nurse’s lips curved into a smile, clearly thinking they looked like a loving couple.
“Normally, we recommend Alpha and Omega pairs with a compatibility above 50% to consider forming a partnership. Over 70% is considered highly compatible. But a perfect 100%? That’s almost unheard of outside the database… We call it a match made in heaven, destined by fate.”
After finishing, the doctor handed them the report. “There’s not much else to explain. You can read through it yourselves, and come back if you have any questions.”
Once they left the consultation room, Shi Qi held the report in his hand, still feeling as if it weren’t real.
Shang Sui adapted a bit faster and was already flipping through the pages. The report included basic physical data, and when Shi Qi saw the entry listing Shang Sui’s height at 188.5 cm, his eyes dropped to his own height: 177 cm. He fell silent for a moment.
“For a while, I thought there was something wrong with my name.”
“Why?” Shang Sui paused his reading and looked up.
“If not for this name, maybe I could’ve grown a bit taller.”
Shang Sui thought for a moment.
Shi Qi, 177?[mfn]In case you forgot, Shi Qi’s name sounds like “seventeen” (十七 – shí qī)[/mfn]
He couldn’t help but laugh and sincerely reassured him, “You’re just fine the way you are.”
As he spoke, Shang Sui turned the page, his gaze landing on the section about Shi Qi’s pheromone type. Shi Qi noticed and asked, a little uneasy, “Haven’t you stared at it enough? Why are you still on that page?”
“It’s my first time seeing it. It feels novel.”
Back when they first met, Shi Qi hadn’t yet differentiated, and Shang Sui hadn’t known whether he’d eventually become an Omega, Beta, or Alpha.
Shang Sui added, “This kind of flower is very cute.”
Shi Qi’s pheromones smelled like a beautiful, pure flower—it was easy to imagine clusters of blossoms in full bloom.
“…” Shi Qi muttered, “It’s not that weird. Omega pheromones are usually floral or fruity, and if not, then something like milk, strawberry, or chocolate. Your kind of sweet pheromones is what’s rare for an Alpha.”
He finished in one breath. Suddenly, Shang Sui called out, “Xiao Qi.”
“?”
“Are you shy?” Shang Sui asked with a smile.
Flustered and furious, Shi Qi snatched the report away from him. “Stop looking, I want to take a photo!”
Knowing when to stop, Shang Sui didn’t push further. He watched as Shi Qi quickly snapped a picture of the page showing their 100% compatibility. Then, as if something occurred to him, Shi Qi deliberately cropped out Shang Sui’s personal information and turned to look at him.
“My dad is super nosy. He’ll definitely ask all kinds of questions. If there’s anything you don’t want to reveal, just tell me. I won’t say anything to them.”
“It’s fine, I don’t mind.” After a pause, Shang Sui added, “But I think, to make it more convincing, you could try telling them bit by bit.”
Jumping straight in with something like, “I did a compatibility report with my boyfriend,” had too much shock value—enough to make Shi An question if it was authentic.
Shi Qi frowned slightly. “But I already said it.”
He explained what had happened earlier to Shang Sui. After listening, Shang Sui thought for a moment.
“In that case, how about telling them we’ve known each other for a while?”
Shi Qi was caught off guard. “Huh?”
Was the story really going to have this many twists and turns?
“Because if we already liked each other before, it makes more sense how we became a couple so fast.”
“That would sound more believable, wouldn’t it?”
At first, the idea sounded a bit wild, but the more Shi Qi thought about it, the more it made sense, and it could clear up most of Shi An and Jiang Youning’s doubts.
“Then… when did we meet?”
Shang Sui looked into his bright, clear eyes and answered in a softened voice, “When you were around fourteen.”
Shi Qi looked thoughtful.
Back then, his family used to go on vacation every summer, settling down in one spot for days at a time. Shi An and Jiang Li would go off and do their own thing. It was entirely possible he could’ve secretly gotten to know some Alpha.
Shang Sui had to admit—he was lucky. Even the story he made up on the spot happened to fit the truth.
Watching Shi Qi’s unaware expression, Shang Sui felt a complicated tangle of emotions rise in his chest, even though he’d long known Shi Qi had forgotten the past. There was disappointment, a quiet relief from having already accepted it, and a bit of gratitude he felt he shouldn’t have.
Seeing Shi Qi nod and agree to the plan, Shang Sui finally said, “Just bring it up with your family first. We can figure out the rest later.”
Shi Qi had a natural trust in Shang Sui’s arrangements. Without much hesitation, he opened the group chat and replied to Shi An’s earlier questions about how he’d met this person and why he suddenly started dating someone.
17: [It wasn’t sudden. I met him when I was a kid.]
Shi An was still skeptical: [When exactly?]
Now it was Jiang Youning’s turn to protest: [Xiao Qi? It’s one thing not to tell our dads, but how could you hide it from your sister?]
The more she thought about it, the more dissatisfied she became: [I tell you everything when I’m in a relationship! I even told you when I got dumped!]
Shi Qi didn’t have time to pacify her. He simply sent a photo of the compatibility report.
Jiang Youning: [WTF!!!!]
Probably realizing it wasn’t appropriate to swear in front of the older generation, she quickly deleted the message, but then couldn’t help asking: [Is this real or photoshopped?!]
Shi An, who had been suspicious before, did a full 180: [Baby, when is your boyfriend free? Let’s meet up.]
Meeting the parents wasn’t in Shi Qi’s plans for now, so he firmly rejected it.
17: [No.]
17: [You’ll scare him.]
Shi An: [?]
Shi An: [Are you the Omega, or is he?]
17: [I am. But stereotypes are unacceptable.]
Shi An: [……]
Jiang Youning had never seen such a high compatibility score before, and even though Shi Qi declined a meetup, she was still burning with curiosity: [At least send a photo?]
That would require the person’s permission first.
Shi Qi turned his head. While he was chatting with his family, Shang Sui hadn’t tried to peek at the conversation. He was just quietly using his phone beside him.
Shi Qi glanced over quickly. Shang Sui seemed to be… shopping for clothes? And not even for the current season, but for thin shirts.
No wonder he always looked so put-together.
Shi Qi had never seen an Alpha who liked dressing up more than Shang Sui. He had no doubt that if pheromones didn’t exist, Shang Sui would’ve worn a different cologne every time they met.
“My family wants to see your photo. I won’t include your face, but can I take a picture of something else?”
“Sure.” Shang Sui put his phone away. “You can take one of my face too, actually. That’s the part I’m confident in.”
“…” Shi Qi couldn’t argue with that.
But he didn’t plan on showing Shang Sui’s face. First, appearance was a matter of privacy—even if Shang Sui didn’t mind, Shi Qi felt it wasn’t appropriate. Second, he’d finally learned to take things step by step this time. That face was his ultimate move, saved for when it really counted.
He pointed the camera at Shang Sui and took a picture. The Alpha had broad shoulders and a narrow waist, and even from a random angle, his physique was undeniably attractive.
Shi Qi was quite satisfied with the faceless shot and was just about to send it when Shang Sui suddenly leaned in.
Shi Qi caught a faint trace of Shang Sui’s rich, sweet scent at the tip of his nose, light and wonderful like bubbles.
Looking at the photo, Shang Sui commented, “This looks too distant, like we don’t know each other well.”
Shi Qi didn’t reply. Because of Shang Sui’s sudden closeness, his fingers instinctively tightened around the phone.
Shang Sui didn’t seem to notice his nervousness. With a calm expression, he asked, “Can I hold your hand?”
Shi Qi’s mind was taut with tension, and before he realized it, he nodded.
Almost the moment he agreed, warmth from another body closed in. The veins on the back of the Alpha’s hand were prominent, and his skin was like white jade.
In comparison, Shi Qi’s fingers were long and slender, but his whole hand was much smaller. His pink-tinted fingertips looked like trembling flower buds.
The instant their skin touched, Shi Qi instinctively tried to pull away, but Shang Sui used a bit of force to hold him still. His fingers threaded through the gaps between Shi Qi’s, locking at the knuckles until their palms pressed together.
“You can take the photo now.”
“What?” Shi Qi was completely caught off guard.
Shang Sui noticed his dazed expression and couldn’t help but smile. He used his free hand to unlock his phone and snapped a picture of their interlocked fingers.
Before letting go, he gave Shi Qi’s fingertip a playful squeeze, then casually retreated to a safe distance without waiting for a reaction.
“Use this one.” Shang Sui sent him the photo. “This way, we look more like a couple.”
–
That ambiguous photo of their entwined fingers worked wonders. Shi An didn’t press further and simply told them to focus on their relationship.
Shi Qi figured he’d finally earned some peace for the time being, though his still-frozen bank card suggested Shi An hadn’t fully bought the story.
Thinking of this, Shi Qi felt he should at least show some gratitude to Shang Sui. Since the other party didn’t want money, a gift seemed appropriate.
Just as he was considering what to buy, Qin Shuhe reached out first.
Because Qin Shuhe talked too much, Shi Qi had muted his messages, so whenever Qin Shuhe wanted to play games and couldn’t get through, he had to go through Lin Yan.
Qin Shuhe had probably just remembered that Shi Qi knew Shang Sui and came over to ramble a bit.
Qin Shuhe: [The new teaching assistant is so awesome.]
Qin Shuhe: [He looks so good that at first everyone thought he was just a pretty face. But today, Lao[mfn]Lao means “old”, usually used in informal contexts. This is referring to Professor Xie.[/mfn] Xie wasn’t around, so he taught a class for us, and by the end of it, everyone was on their best behavior.]
[I never knew someone could have such a keen sense of color. He told me to adjust just a few spots, and the whole feel of the painting changed instantly.]
[I’m on my knees. This guy is basically the god of color.]
[No wonder Lao Xie kept going on and on about when he’d finally come to the school. He’s had other assistants before but never seemed to care this much. Our last assistant was great too, but still not on Teacher Shang’s level.]
Already calling him “Teacher”?
It was the first time Shi Qi found Qin Shuhe’s chatter interesting. He even asked a follow-up question: [How did your Teacher Shang get hired?]
Qin Shuhe responded like a long-abandoned concubine suddenly summoned by the emperor: [Your Majesty! You actually read my message!]
[I’m not too sure either. Maybe he was one of Lao Xie’s former students? Our last teaching assistant was like that. I heard her family situation wasn’t great, and Lao Xie really values talent, so he made an exception to let her work here for a while.]
Shi Qi’s gaze paused on the phrase “family situation wasn’t great.” Thinking of how Shang Sui had previously worked at Huijian, it all suddenly seemed to connect.
So that was it?
Shi Qi couldn’t help but imagine a story of someone working part-time to chase an artistic dream, and the more he thought about it, the more plausible it seemed.
17: [Got it. You may leave the court now.]
After sending that, Shi Qi exited the chat without waiting for Qin Shuhe to finish pouring out his admiration for Shang Sui.
Shang Sui really had quite an eventful life. No wonder he could so casually spin a story about meeting as kids.
But even after getting to know him better, Shi Qi still had no idea what kind of gift would be appropriate.
After mulling it over, he finally decided to buy him clothes that suited his taste.
It took him quite a while to choose. In the end, Shi Qi settled on an oversized satin baseball jacket. At first, he picked black but then thought all black might be too plain for Shang Sui, so he switched to a version with bright orange accents.
When Lin Yan saw the shopping bag with the brand’s logo in their dorm, he asked curiously, “Don’t you usually avoid this brand? You said their stuff’s too flashy.”
Shi Qi replied with just a few words, “A thank-you gift.”
Not giving Lin Yan a chance to ask more, he grabbed the bag and headed out.
Shang Sui happened to have a class that day, and the two had agreed to meet after it ended.
Shi Qi was fairly familiar with the art academy. Once, as a last-minute favor, he’d modeled for Qin Shuhe’s roommate, who studied fashion design. Relying on memory, he made his way to the teaching building. Seeing it was about time, he headed up to the fifth floor, as Shang Sui had instructed.
Just as he turned the stairwell corner, he spotted Shang Sui in the distance.
Shi Qi was about to call out to him when a girl with long hair ran up behind and beat him to it.
The girl held a small pink gift bag and said cheerfully, “Teacher Shang, these are cookies my friend made herself. You helped her with her assignment the other day, and she really appreciates it.”
“She’s too shy to give them to you herself, so I offered to pass them along.”
Shang Sui looked more like an older classmate than a teaching assistant, but his skills were exceptional. Everyone really liked the new assistant.
Shang Sui wasn’t arrogant, but he had an aura that made him seem hard to approach. Everyone understood—talented people naturally had some quirks.
Her friend was shy, and even though she liked him, she didn’t have the courage to talk to him directly.
The girl asked tentatively, “Would it be okay for you to accept them?”
“Please thank your friend for me,” Shang Sui said politely but didn’t take the gift. “Helping with assignments is part of my job. No need to be so formal.”
The girl got the message. “Got it, got it. Sorry to bother you!”
She hesitated for a moment, then joked, “You won’t give us a bad grade because of this, right?”
“Of course not.” Shang Sui smiled too. “But next time in class, no daydreaming.”
Wow, he looks so handsome when he smiles.
And he sure knew how to talk.
After a moment of quiet reflection, the girl smiled and bid him farewell. As Shang Sui turned around, he didn’t expect to see Shi Qi standing halfway down the hallway, raising an eyebrow at him.
It was one of those rare winter days filled with sunshine. Shi Qi stood bathed in warm, dazzling golden light; his skin and hair shimmered with a translucent glow, like something out of a fairy tale.
An angel, perhaps… one that might vanish if you looked away?
Shang Sui stopped his wandering thoughts.
He didn’t know how much of that earlier scene Shi Qi had witnessed. Instinctively, he quickened his pace. But as he got closer, he realized there was probably no need to worry—Shi Qi likely didn’t care at all.
“Popular Teacher Shang,” the little angel lifted his eyelids and said slowly, “will you accept my gift?”
Author’s Note:
Feels like I’ve given so many species for Xiao Qi ^^
If we exclude cats, in 2s’s mind, 17 is probably closest to an angel. Then what does 2s think he is himself? Please look forward to the follow-up! (?)
Xiao Qi gave Xiao Sui some clothes. Next comes swapping outfits, and after that, it’s Xiao Sui dressing up a certain cool guy who only wears black and white, leaving behind a mark that he belongs to someone.
