Kazusa’s heart skipped a beat as he realised all three pairs of eyes were now focused on him.
“G-good work,” he managed to force out, bowing his head slightly. He wanted nothing more than to turn around and leave the backroom, but if he did that, it would only make things worse between him and Lycaon.
(Wait. This might be a chance.)
It was an opportunity to apologise for the incident earlier and make peace with Lycaon.
Kazusa convinced himself of this and gave the three men a slight nod before averting his gaze and heading to the locker area at the back. He was acutely aware of his faster-than-usual heartbeat as he opened his locker and pulled out his fabric tote bag.
(When I leave, I’ll approach Lycaon and apologise for what happened earlier.)
Kazusa repeated what he needed to do in his head, pumped himself up with a “Right,” and turned back. But after just a few steps, his foot hit something. He realised too late that it was someone’s leg sticking out from between the potted plants—before he knew it, he had lost his balance.
“Whoa!”
With a shout, Kazusa stumbled forward and fell, hitting his left knee hard on the floor.
“Ow… that hurts…”
Sitting on the floor, clutching his injured knee, he suddenly heard laughter raining down from above. When he looked up, there were three faces peering down at him through the potted plants. Each one of them wore a malicious grin.
“Watch where you’re going. You’re all wobbly.”
“Careful there, old man.”
As the mocking remarks kept coming, Kazusa clenched his teeth in frustration. Then, Lycaon, holding a can of beer, gulped it down and crushed the aluminium can in his hand. Without warning, he threw the crushed can straight at Kazusa’s face. Kazusa dodged it, but it still grazed the side of his head with a sharp thud.
“Ouch!”
“Oh, my bad. I was aiming for the trash can, but my hand slipped.”
Fossa, who had been watching, reached out and flipped his own beer can upside down over Kazusa’s head. The remaining liquid splashed down onto him.
“Ugh!”
Kazusa quickly wiped the beer off his face with his hands as it dripped down.
“Whoops, looks like my aim was off. Guess I had one too many drinks.”
“You’ve had too much, man.”
“Wet rat… No, wait, wet spectacled monkey!”
Lycaon threw his head back and burst out laughing, while Jackal and Fossa clutched their stomachs, howling with laughter.
“Alright, let’s head out.”
With that, Lycaon signalled the end of their little ‘performance’, prompting the other two to follow suit.
Still in shock from the textbook bullying he had just endured, Kazusa called out, “W-wait a second!” trying to stop them as they moved toward the door.
Lycaon turned back, his eyes narrowing, “You got a problem or something?”
Kazusa noticed that the foot that had tripped him was clad in black. Lycaon was the only one of the three wearing black pants.
But Kazusa didn’t press the issue. Sticking to his original plan, he apologised.
“Um… about earlier today, I’m sorry for saying something rude all of a sudden. If I upset you, I apologise.”
“Huh? I don’t remember. Besides, I couldn’t care less what someone like you says.”
“But… then why would you do something like this?”
“Why, you ask?”
Kazusa nodded. He genuinely couldn’t understand why they would go this far over something unrelated to their earlier interaction.
It was clear that Lycaon was the leader of the group. Kazusa knew that Fossa and Jackal often mocked him behind his back, but they had never resorted to violence. In fact, they didn’t even seem that interested in him.
“If you really don’t get it, I’ll spell it out for you. I don’t like your very existence. A former doctor, huh? A pampered rich boy who’s never known hardship. You make me sick.”
Lycaon spat the words, mockingly pretending to gag.
“I don’t want some newbie Omega who just joined yesterday or today acting like one of us.”
“Yeah, exactly. Growing up in a brothel makes me soft, but I’m still a hundred times better than you.”
“If you get it, don’t ever talk to me again.”
Lycaon slowly pointed his thumb down—a clear ‘I kill you’ gesture—before turning on his heel and heading for the door. His two companions followed close behind.
With a loud bang, the door slammed shut as they left.
“…Are you kidding me?”
Still crouching on the floor, clutching his throbbing knee, Kazusa muttered in disbelief.
He had thought that a proper apology would mend things with Lycaon. Now he could only curse his own naivety. If they despised his very existence, there was no way forward.
Dragging his injured leg and his battered spirit, Kazusa returned to his room. He immediately applied ice to his knee to reduce the swelling. Thankfully, a quick self-diagnosis confirmed that there were no bone fractures (he had never been more grateful to have experience as an orthopaedic doctor than in that moment). He taped up the injury to prevent any unconscious movement, then went to the bathroom to wash the beer out of his hair and off his face. After throwing his wet clothes into the laundry, he finally went to bed.
The throbbing pain in his knee made it difficult for Kazusa to get a good night’s sleep. But thanks to the cold compress, the swelling had gone down significantly by the next day. With his knee taped securely, he could walk normally. No one would be able to tell anything was wrong, and Kazusa felt relieved as he headed to his shift at the lounge in the evening.
At the lounge, he made a conscious effort to avoid getting too close to the group from the slums.
Right now, the best thing to do is to not provoke them.
With that in mind, Kazusa tried his best to avoid any interaction with the three. And as instructed, he refrained from speaking to them. However, it seemed even that didn’t sit well with them.
When he returned to the backroom after his shift, he found that the pouch he always kept in his locker was missing. It was a small medical kit that he had prepared in case of any injuries among guests, cast members, or staff. The pouch contained scissors, tweezers, bandages, gauze, surgical tape, and other essential first-aid supplies.
