DL Chapter44

Snowman and Fireworks

During the meal, the Fu family was unusually quiet.

Fu Baiqi’s anger from earlier still hadn’t subsided. Although he usually had a cold, indifferent personality, when he was angry, the look on his face carried a sharp, biting coldness that made everyone around him uneasy, especially the younger kids. They kept their heads down, eating quietly, too afraid to say a word.

It was hard to pinpoint exactly when Fu Baiqi started caring about Fang Fengzhi, but he had actually gotten angry over a few words from the kids. Although the older relatives were silently blaming him, they didn’t say anything out loud.

Fang Fengzhi sat quietly in the middle of the group, chewing the food in his mouth without saying a word. After what had happened earlier, the gaze of the Fu family members kept turning toward him, making him feel uncomfortable. He forced down a few more bites before telling them he was leaving. As soon as he stepped into the living room, he heard the chatter resume inside. Before long, the dining room was filled with lively conversation again, as if the family had finally reunited.

Fang Fengzhi turned his gaze to the TV, where people were dressed in festive clothes, laughing and joking. It truly felt like the celebration of the New Year had arrived.

In that moment, Fang Fengzhi suddenly found himself missing Min Zhi.

He wondered what he was doing, if he was with his family, perhaps eating dinner?

But someone sitting next to him interrupted his thoughts.

Fang Fengzhi turned his head and saw that it was Fu Baiqi who had come out from inside. He sat beside him, his expression much softer than before, no longer as tense. However, the Alpha didn’t speak; he simply sat there, watching the TV as if passing time, his gaze fixed on the screen without a glance to the side.

After a moment of silence, he heard him speak again: “Are you still angry?” The words sounded like they had been trapped inside him for a long time, finally breaking free.

Fang Fengzhi looked at him in surprise. Recently, Fu Baiqi had been doing things that were unexpected. But soon, his gaze returned to calm, and he turned his attention back to the side, saying calmly, “I’m not angry.”

Then there was no further conversation. Fang Fengzhi didn’t want to speak, and Fu Baiqi couldn’t find the words to say. However, Fu Baiqi didn’t want their conversation to end like this, nor did he want their relationship to come to such a conclusion. His restless thoughts struggled for a moment.

“We…”

Just as he had mustered the courage to say a few words, someone interrupted him. “Baiqi.” His aunt smiled warmly at him, trying to ease the tension from the earlier incident with his younger cousins. “Don’t stay inside sulking. Come join us in the garden for a while.”

Having his conversation with Fang Fengzhi interrupted, Fu Baiqi frowned in irritation but didn’t say anything. He simply nodded and replied, “I’ll be there in a moment.”

Now that there were people in the living room, Fu Baiqi couldn’t say anything more to Fang Fengzhi. He had no choice but to join his family outside. He stood up and looked at Fang Fengzhi, who was curled up on the sofa. “Let’s go.” He said. Although Fu Baiqi’s family hadn’t invited him, Fu Baiqi was personally inviting him to come along.

Fang Fengzhi paused for a second. He thought to himself that if Fu Baiqi had invited him last year, he would have definitely gone along without hesitation.

“It’s too cold, I don’t want to go out.”

The living room quickly emptied.

The TV was still playing a noisy show, but the silence in the room felt overwhelming. He lowered his head and quietly opened a conversation with an unfamiliar number, sending a message.

[Have you eaten?]

Afterward, his heart felt a little fuller, and he sat back in his previous spot, silently waiting for a reply. But after a long while, there was still no response. With each passing moment, his heart grew heavier.

This was Min Zhi’s phone number. He wanted to call him, but he was afraid that the Enigma might be busy and he would disturb him.

He stood up and walked to the window.

It was already dark, and the pale light in the yard illuminated the outside clearly. Two young children were running around with the dog in the thick snow, and the adults were sitting aside chatting with smiles on their faces.

Fang Fengzhi lowered his eyes. He had seen this scene many times in the Fu family’s house, and every time he was excluded.

He doesn’t remember the feeling at that time, maybe a little envy or maybe something else, but now Fang Fengzhi clearly feels that he is too lonely.

He was lonelier than ever before, so lonely that he only wanted to hear Min Zhi’s voice.

The cell phone in his pocket suddenly vibrated. Fang Fengzhi was stunned. His heart started beating fast as if he had a premonition.

He answered the phone and put it close to his ear. “Hello?”

“What are you doing?”

The moment he heard Min Zhi’s voice, Fang Fengzhi’s heart was finally filled with warmth. He was always so timely.

“Just finished eating.” He heard that Min Zhi was very quiet, without any sound. “How about you? Have you eaten?”

“Yes.”

“Oh.” Fang Fengzhi turned around and walked back to the living room, listening to the Enigma quietly. “Are you happy today?”

But Fang Fengzhi didn’t say anything for a long time.

Because he was unhappy today.

Not hearing the Omega’s answer, Min Zhi asked again, “What’s wrong?” His voice was deep, but the tone was gentle, like speaking to a child.

Fang Fengzhi felt his heart ache. His mouth opened and closed, and then he couldn’t help but call him, “Mr. Min…”

When Min Zhi heard him calling him, his heart stirred slightly. He looked at the wall of the facility indifferently. Then he heard the faint and hot voice of the Omega coming from there, “I miss you a little…”

His hand holding the phone shook violently, as if it was scalded, and then the scorching temperature spread from that hand to his entire body.

Fang Fengzhi always gives him a blow when he least expects it. He is a timid person, but he expresses his love without any concealment.

Something warm and surging suddenly appeared in Min Zhi’s eyes, and he closed them.

“En.”

After hanging up the phone, Fang Fengzhi felt the unbearable loneliness in his heart eased, but he missed Min Zhi even more. He looked at the snow falling from the sky outside and walked out with some excitement. He had just opened the door and had not walked a few steps when he was hit by a ball of cold snow. Because he came out on a whim, he did not wear thick clothes, and the scattered snow rubbed his skin and fell into his clothes, which made him shiver.

He glanced at the boy who threw the snow.

The boy looked at him provocatively. “Sorry ah, I didn’t see you.”

Fang Fengzhi frowned, expressionless, as if he was not angry about it, “Childish.”

He knew that adolescent boys hated these two words the most. As expected, Fu Yan’s face instantly turned red with anger, and his eyes were like those of an angry wolf cub. He looked at Fang Fengzhi viciously and was about to curse the next second, but he saw Fu Baiqi coming over.

The man glanced at Fu Yan with a cold and disgusted look. Fu Yan was instantly nailed to the spot, his face turned pale, and he was unable to speak.

Fang Fengzhi patted the snow outside and said, “I’m going to change my clothes.” Then he walked in. Fu Baiqi didn’t say anything and followed him silently. When Fang Fengzhi walked into the room, he remembered that his luggage was at his father’s place and he didn’t bring it with him.

Fu Baiqi opened his closet and took out a piece of his own clothing and gave it to him. “Wear mine.”

Fang Fengzhi hesitated for a moment, then took it and said, “Thank you.”

He was about to change without any hesitation but suddenly remembered that there was a tooth mark left on his shoulder by Min Zhi. He paused and turned to look at Fu Baiqi who was beside him. “I want to change clothes.”

In fact, it was just taking off a shirt, there was no need to cover up, but fortunately, Fu Baiqi didn’t say anything and turned around and walked out.

Fang Fengzhi finally relaxed when he heard the door close. He quickly took off his shirt and glanced at the bite mark on his shoulder. Although it was almost healed, there was still an obvious mark.

Fang Fengzhi paused.

Not sure what he thought of. His face was blank for a moment, and then his skin, starting from his ears, slowly turned red.

He seemed to understand why Min Zhi bit his shoulder so hard for no apparent reason that day.

It was like a small corner was opened, and Fang Fengzhi discovered Min Zhi’s hidden, secret possessiveness through this corner.

It’s not annoying but makes people feel moved.

Fu Baiqi must have received a call from the company, he stood aside to talk, and when he saw Fang Fengzhi coming out of the room, he walked towards him.

But Fang Fengzhi went downstairs before he came over. He wrapped himself in his scarf and went outside. The snow was getting heavier and heavier. It was the heaviest snowfall this year.

Fang Fengzhi avoided the people from the Fu family and ran to the back of the house alone. It was too boring to stay here, so he made an ugly snowman for fun, with two balls piled together, and it looked like a human. But Fang Fengzhi still drew a face for it, with frowning eyebrows and lips in a straight line, looking very serious.

Like the expression Min Zhi would make.

Fang Fengzhi couldn’t help laughing. He took a photo of the snowman with his eyes squinted and sent it to Min Zhi.

[Picture]

[Does it look very familiar?]

The snowman was crooked, so Fang Fengzhi added some snow to it to make it look bigger.

The message he sent never received a reply.

Is he too busy? He had heard Min Zhi say before that his family didn’t like to celebrate holidays, so what was he doing now?

Fang Fengzhi put on his hat, wrapped himself up tightly, and fell on the snow.

He punched the snowman a few times out of boredom, a hole was made in it, and it seemed to be falling down.

After a while, he put the snowman back to its original shape and then walked back slowly. It had already been dark for a while now, and the people playing in the yard probably went back because it was too cold. Fang Fengzhi sat down at the door, he didn’t really want to go in.

It was probably a bit noisy inside.

He held the phone in his hand boredly. The chat box of the unknown number was always on the interface, and there was no movement from the other end.

He couldn’t help but call the other party.

The phone rang for a long time, but no one answered.

Fang Fengzhi hid his face in his scarf, his nose tip was red.

He missed him so much.

It was almost midnight, and people in the town started setting off fireworks. The sound of fireworks exploding could be heard everywhere. He had originally wanted to quietly call Min Zhi at midnight. He wondered if he would answer the phone later.

Fang Fengzhi raised his head, and the fireworks made his eyes bright. He remembered that when he was a child, he also stood by the window alone and watched other people set off fireworks.

Amid the sound of fireworks, he seemed to catch a glimpse of a figure opening the gate and walking in. He turned his head in confusion, and just above his head a cluster of fiery red fireworks exploded, illuminating the entire yard, including the Enigma, who was walking towards him.

He appeared a bit drowsy, his half-closed eyes focused on the Omega sitting on the steps. Amid the sound of fireworks, he heard the man speak.

“Why don’t you take good care of yourself?”
