HS Chapter 36

The One Who Is Close To The Water Can Catch The Moon

The moment they touched, Ye Wenyu’s mind was filled with just two words: it’s over.

It wasn’t because he feared Yan Chen would get angry, nor was he worried that Yan Chen would push him away, but because his own sudden, uncontrollable surge of desire told him…it’s over.

A mere superficial touch was far from enough for him. He craved for more. He wanted to get closer, to go deeper, to cling to him… and even possess him.

The hidden greed had found its breakthrough point and erupted like a volcano, and the soaring ash and boiling magma completely engulfed him.

He was startled by the overwhelming thoughts that suddenly flooded him.

Like waking up from a dream, he realized the absurd thing he was doing, and jumped back in panic.

But his arm was suddenly held in a tight grip.

Ye Wenyu’s eyes widened slightly as he looked at Yan Chen, and his breathing immediately became disordered and completely out of rhythm.

Yan Chen looked at him. The weird lighting couldn’t reach the depths of his eyes. They were like black holes, swallowing all the light and hiding emotions too complex for Ye Wenyu to read.

The annoying song reached its end. As the climax faded, applause erupted, and a group of people eagerly cheered them on, praising them to the skies and coaxing them to perform another song.

No one noticed the two of them in the corner.

Ye Wenyu’s heartbeat was faster than the pounding rhythm of the music next door.

His courage was just that little bit. After one bold move, he couldn’t go on and became flustered and panicked.

He forcefully pulled his arm from Yan Chen’s hand, his chest visibly rising and falling. He lowered his eyes and, without saying a word, got up and left the private room.

The bite on the corner of his mouth didn’t hurt or itch, it was more like a little kitten had playfully licked him with its barbed tongue, and the tingling numbness seeped into his bloodstream and lingered for a long time.

Yan Chen looked at the little kitten Ye who ran away after biting and almost laughed out of frustration. He tugged at the corner of his mouth helplessly but found himself unable to smile.

A figure flashed in the corner of his eye, and Dong Xi sat down beside him. He clinked the mouth of a bottle against the empty glass in front of him. “Why did Wenyu leave, was there something urgent?”

Yan Chen didn’t speak.

Dong Xi swirled the half bottle of wine that remained, glanced at the two protagonists starting a new song, and casually said, “Yan-ge, last time you said it wasn’t the right time. Now that the timing’s so good, is it still not?”

He paused after speaking, then turned his head and locked eyes with Yan Chen. He curled up the corners of his mouth and smiled. “Sorry, I wasn’t trying to peek. It’s just that I have good eyesight, and I accidentally caught a glimpse.”

Yan Chen: “You found out?”

“Honestly, it was pretty obvious.” Dong Xi said, “But Old Yang probably hasn’t noticed.”

Yan Chen looked at him for a while, then turned back to stare at the empty glass in front of him. “It really isn’t.”

His answer jumped topics and it took Dong Xi a couple of seconds to catch up and realize he was answering his earlier question; “Now isn’t the right time either?”

He didn’t quite get it. “Why not?”

Yan Chen did not answer, but closed his eyes, bent his fingers and pressed hard against his eyebrows.

‘Yes, why?’

He had thought Ye Wenyu felt the same way as he did. If not completely, then at least seventy or eighty percent.

But judging by the current situation, it didn’t seem to be just that.

There was something else above it all. His feelings were wrapped in a thin mist and hidden deep inside. He couldn’t see through it, and couldn’t figure out what this cat really wanted.

The road back to school wasn’t long. After walking past the brightly lit streets and entering campus, the noise gradually faded. Fallen leaves and dust were chased by the wind into the greenery, and the footsteps behind him became clearer.

Ye Wenyu knew Yan Chen was walking him back, but his mind was a mess. He didn’t know what to say if he stopped, nor how to say it.

Yan Chen probably guessed that his thoughts were all tangled up, so he didn’t try to catch up. He just followed behind, neither too far nor too close.

The closer they got to the dorm building, the slower Ye Wenyu walked.

A few boys in big shorts ran through the gates, laughing and chasing each other as they went to buy snacks. Once they disappeared, the entrance became completely quiet.

As he stepped onto the stairs, he finally stopped and turned around. Yan Chen was standing about ten steps away and quietly watching him.

“You agreed to it.”

As soon as he spoke, he realized how dry and hoarse his throat was. He paused for a moment, then still finished the second half: “You can’t hold it against me.”

He knew it was a useless line, but it was the only thing he could think of to say.

There wasn’t any particular reason, he just really wanted to talk to Yan Chen one more time before parting ways tonight.

“Mm.” Yan Chen stood in place, his right hand hanging at his side holding a phone. The screen kept lighting up and dimming again, probably from people in the private room realizing he was gone and sending him messages one after another.

He looked at Ye Wenyu, and his voice scattered into the slowly flowing air: “I won’t hold it against you.”

Ye Wenyu nodded, then didn’t know what else to say.

The wind came in waves, carrying a gloomy and damp chill. The temperature was getting lower and lower. It looked like it would rain at night.

Yan Chen: “Go back first. Don’t stay up late after drinking. Go to bed early.”

Ye Wenyu agreed, turned, and entered the gate before the next gust of wind arrived. Just before turning into the stairwell, he looked back. Yan Chen was still standing there alone, watching him leave.

The bathroom window wasn’t fully closed, leaving a narrow gap, and a layer of mist quickly formed on the glass window due to the evaporation of hot steam.

Ye Wenyu stood under the showerhead, letting the hot water soak him from head to toe.

The air was humid and stuffy. He exhaled a low breath, then suddenly reached out and flipped the switch from left to right.

The spraying water turned from hot to cold instantly.

The sudden chill made Ye Wenyu tremble and he quickly flipped the switch back.

Cold showers really weren’t for everyone. Still, that brief coldness was enough to slowly cool down his blood.

But whenever he thought back to that bite, which was no different from a kiss, his heart would still thump wildly and he realized that he couldn’t put the brakes on anymore.

Not only was he not satisfied or fed up with the increasing closeness, he had become even more greedy and insatiable.

He couldn’t accept retreating to the original distance between him and Yan Chen, nor could he imagine the day Yan Chen got a girlfriend. Not only would he have to keep his distance from him, he would also watch as what was once exclusively his got divided and given to someone else.

His “condition” was getting worse again.

Casual kisses weren’t something that existed between friends. If he wanted to cross the boundary, their relationship would have to go a step further.

He knew it was wrong, but he couldn’t help it.

He couldn’t confess.

Or rather, before that, he needed to figure out a way to make Yan Chen his boyfriend.

After coming out of the bathroom, Ye Wenyu opened the balcony door and heard Chi Dongting on the phone with his mother.

“The day after tomorrow? Mom, that’s too soon.”

“I have so much stuff. Even if I take my time packing, it’ll take a few days.”

“Alright, alright, I’ll start packing tomorrow.”

It looked like he was moving out.

In fact, Ye Wenyu didn’t really care whether he lived alone or with someone. Maybe he’d feel a bit lonely, but it would definitely be quiet. And conveniently, he liked quiet.

But just as he pulled out a chair, something suddenly occurred to him. He lifted his eyes slightly, and his movement paused midair.

Chi Dongting, who was still rambling, seemed to realize he was being noisy, so he went to the balcony door and shut the door, and his voice became muffled and unclear.

Ye Wenyu didn’t hesitate long. He sat down, took out his phone, and tapped on Yan Chen’s profile.

After carefully thinking it over, he typed “My roommate is getting ready to move out” into the input box, but before he could send it, the top of the chat changed to “typing…”

Yan Chen: [In the afternoon competition, I got first place.]

Ye Wenyu had no choice but to delete what he’d typed and replied: [That’s very impressive, congratulations.]

Yan Chen: [Can I ask for a reward now?]

Ye Wenyu: [Of course you can. What reward do you want?]

After sending it, he reread the message and realized it sounded a bit inappropriate. He wanted to add, [If I can afford it], just to be cautious, but his fingers were too slow, and he didn’t get the chance.

Yan Chen: [Wenyu, move into our dorm.]

Chi Dongting didn’t actually mind moving off-campus to live with his mother. He just felt bad about leaving Ye Wenyu alone in the dorm with no one to talk to.

Fortunately, that problem was easily solved thanks to the warm invitation from Room 508 of the sports department dormitory.

The school did care about students’ preferences. With dorm changes, as long as both sides agreed, all it took was a simple application.

On Wednesday afternoon, the two people in Room 305, one moved out and one moved to the dormitory across.

Ye Wenyu barely lifted a finger the whole time. Yan Chen helped him with everything. Even in the dorm, the empty bed had already been cleaned by Yan Chen in advance. Aside from placing personal items, everything else was handled by Yan Chen.

Of course, there were also two other good roommates.

While Ye Wenyu was arranging things on his desk, Yang Liang sat on an empty suitcase and slid back and forth: “It’s a bit late today, but tomorrow, tomorrow we’ll go out for a nice meal to welcome Wenyu into our 508 big family…no, small family!”

Dong Xi: “The guys next door are really curious. They’ve been sending me messages nonstop, asking to come check out our new roommate but I didn’t agree, so don’t casually open the door for anyone later.”

“Why not?” Yang Liang asked. “It’s just looking. They’re going to meet eventually anyway. You hiding him like this makes it seem like Wenyu’s the little bride who just married into our dorm.”

Ye Wenyu: “…”

“You don’t understand the pain of dealing with a social butterfly at first meeting. It’s better to take it slow.”

Dong Xi paused for two seconds after speaking, stroking his chin like he was thinking hard: “But the way you described it actually makes a lot of sense…”

“Quit talking nonsense.” Yan Chen came in after washing his hands, gave Dong Xi a glance, and then turned to Ye Wenyu. “Go take a shower. You must be tired from the move, so sleep early.”

Ye Wenyu didn’t feel tired. After all, he didn’t move much. At most, he just moved himself from the west gate to the south gate.

But Yan Chen’s words seemed to carry a strange kind of magic. He didn’t feel tired, but after his shower and lying in bed, sleepiness quickly overtook him and his eyelids grew heavy.

When Yan Chen came out after his own shower, he saw Ye Wenyu lying on the edge of the bed with his arms under his head, looking at him with sleepy eyes.

Dong Xi had gone out to the hallway to call his girlfriend, and Yang Liang was sitting at the computer, playing Minesweeper with headphones on.

Yan Chen walked over and stood by the bed, looking up at him.

“Why don’t you sleep if you’re tired?”

Ye Wenyu’s gaze stayed fixed on him, but he didn’t answer.

He was so drowsy he could barely keep his eyes open, but there was a wonderful, indescribable feeling blooming inside him.

He was living with Yan Chen now.

From now on, they’d see each other morning and night. If nothing went wrong, he’d open his eyes every day and see him.

The one who is close to the water can catch the moon.

And the moon was so beautiful it made his heart itch. After looking for a while, he couldn’t resist the temptation anymore and wanted to reach out and touch it.

His fingers slid aimlessly over the forehead, past the eyebrows and eyes, down the bridge of the nose, then lingered at the corner of the mouth where he had bitten before…lingering unconsciously.

Yan Chen quietly watched him, letting him mess around on his face. When Ye Wenyu couldn’t hold on anymore and finally closed his eyes, Yan Chen turned his head slightly and gently kissed his fingertips.
