Chapter 2: 愚人一无所有(二)
[Simpleton have nothing (II)]
Someone next to him came over and casually gave him a hand, Xu Jiu whispered his thanks, and the other party did not say anything and quickly withdrew his hand.
Xu Jiu’s brain is still a little bit blind, he shook his head, grimaced and straightened his body, not caring about the pain in his side waist, he quickly merged into the queue, stood at the end, limping and followed to the outside.
Where to go, he didn’t know, much less care. The group quickly stripped out of their protective suits and removed their lead jackets, and with their bodies still full of wet sweat, they plunged headlong into the pressing air outside.
“Get in.” The woman said.
The supervisor, who hadn’t been given an answer earlier, was still reluctant, and boldly went up to her, “Ma’am, honourable lady, how long are we going to be on this business trip? I still have a few important documents there, I have to pack ….”
The researcher stared at him steadily, the corners of her mouth dancing slightly, twisting out a thin line of lips.
She seemed to be smiling, but her not smiling expression was creepier.
“Shut up and get in the car if you don’t want to die.” She said,
The supervisor didn’t dare to squeak, he remembered that finger not long ago. Trembling in fear while he fearfully shrank his neck, gloomily getting into the transport vehicle.
Xu Jiu, with a bewildered look on his face, sat in the back of the transporter, like a small sardine with rounded eyes, bobbing around in a can. He carefully pressed his waist, waiting for the transport truck to stop so that he would know what his final destination was.
But the further the car drove, the heavier the feeling grew in him naturally.
The transport had crossed the line.
In the Polar Station, the cleaners, cooks, equipment managers, logistics and security personnel like him certainly made up the majority, but they had always lived in the outer ring of the station, separated from the inner ring by a clear red line, and whoever dared to walk into the inner ring without authorisation would be no different from actively committing suicide.
Now, the transporter had long since crossed that insubstantial red line (warning line), and with the green light symbolising passage, the alloy gates opened up layer by layer, and they entered the mysterious and unpredictable inner area.
Where exactly was this vehicle going? Xu Jiu furrowed his brow, ‘Do I still have a chance to get the reward that Wu Zhiqiang promised to give me?’
At this moment, he realized something, if the two had not switched shifts, the person sitting in this car at this moment should be Wu Zhiqiang. In the underworld, it was as if he had taken over a certain route of fate for the other party.
The temperature is terribly low, every breath is like choking on a cavity full of ice ballast. More and more transport trucks overlapped with their route, Xu Jiu estimated the time, the transport trucks travelled for about forty to fifty minutes, stopping three times in the middle of the journey, and every time, they needed to get off the truck on foot to receive warm clothing.
Xu Jiu then changed into these knee pads, scarves and jackets in turn. The clothes were all even-sized, with a cold, hard smell of disinfectant, and while they were certainly clean, they still made him unable to stop thinking: which unlucky person had worn these clothes before?
Passing through the last of the heavy gates and down the obscure tunnel, the transport actually began to go down.
The people in the car coincidentally, all low “Eeh”. Xu Jiu saw the cold blue light on both sides of the tunnel, winding as if it was some kind of beast’s weird food transportation route or path, but for some reason, the more they went down, the brighter the light in front of them.
Nearly five or six kilometres away, half an hour past, the transport truck finally stopped, the car people close to the glass window, once again coincidentally said “wow”.
Xu Jiu understood where that bright light was coming from.
——The tunnels of metal and cement disappeared into the scaffolding, and higher up into the ancient ice. This vast space was almost entirely blue, with glaciers forming the subterranean sky, and ten million artificial stars refracted by artificial lights. Everyone’s face and body shimmered as if they were walking on the bottom of an imaginary sea.
This place was nothing short of a giant excavation site, hubbub of voices, the sound of cutting machines splitting the ice resonating in the distance, and Xu Jiu didn’t have time to survey the area for much longer; he could already see hordes and hordes of heavily armed guards (carrying a loaded firearm) glaring intently at them, the new arrivals.
“Get out of the car and register your identity!” Someone shouted from the front.
Xu Jiu braced himself and stood up, he gripped his work permit tightly and followed behind as he got out of the car. When entering his personal information, he heard the man in front of him still talking, his tone extremely impatient, warning, “… All mind your own eyes, don’t fucking glance around and look around, if you want to die, just say so, understand? Here, the above called it what then you called it what? Who dares to dawdle? There are means or methods waiting for you!”
