WTDWPK Chapter 38

A True Heart for a True Heart

Liu Le trotted over to help Fu Yuqian wipe his face, but Fu Yuqian took the tissue himself, dabbed at the corners of his eyes, and his gaze once again followed Song Yu.

Song Yu hadn’t run off; he just didn’t want to see Fu Yuqian and randomly found a quiet corner to hide in.

Some staff members saw Song Yu but didn’t dare approach and pet him—after all, this was Fu Yuqian’s cat. They pulled out their phones to scroll, when suddenly one of the girls lowered her voice and exclaimed excitedly, “Xingyue just declared bankruptcy today! Oh my god, our Xiao Yu is really going to be free! The Demon King is amazing—I’m kneeling to him!”

Song Yu froze for a moment, then quickly turned to look—Xingyue went bankrupt? What happened? Why did it sound like this had something to do with Fu Yuqian?

“It should’ve shut down ages ago, that black-hearted company. Song Yu’s such a great guy, and they forced him into this. I saw that contract—damn, it couldn’t have been more of a scam.”

Song Yu had been with Fu Yuqian this whole time—after filming, they returned straight to the hotel, and he hadn’t interacted with the staff at all. And while on set, clearly no one dared to discuss this matter around Fu Yuqian, so Song Yu had been kept completely in the dark.

It was only because Xingyue announced its bankruptcy today that the staff dared to gossip quietly—and Song Yu happened to overhear it.

What had Fu Yuqian done behind his back again? And how did his contract get exposed? What about all the material related to his mother? Where did that go?

Song Yu’s heart was in turmoil, emotions churning uncontrollably. He wanted to grab Fu Yuqian by the collar and question him, but—what right did he have? He didn’t even know for certain whether Fu Yuqian had really done all this. These past few days, with something so major happening, Fu Yuqian hadn’t shown even the slightest sign. How could he be like this?

But—even if it was Fu Yuqian who did it, so what? Why did he go after Xingyue? It was for him. It was Fu Yuqian’s way of showing love. If this had happened before he discovered Fu Yuqian’s deception, Song Yu would’ve been deeply moved, might’ve even been willing to give him his life.

But now, he was increasingly scared. How many things had Fu Yuqian hidden from him? He was the person directly involved, and yet he had no right to know anything?

And what made his heart ache most was this—if Fu Yuqian really had helped resolve everything, Song Yu would feel grateful and would try every possible way to repay him. If Fu Yuqian wanted emotional commitment in return, he would accept that too. But could two people really be happy that way?

Song Yu’s head was spinning—he felt like he was going crazy.

Yi Yi originally wanted to chat with Song Yu. After all, as a cat whose sexual orientation didn’t align with mainstream norms and who couldn’t talk to humans, life was very boring. So being able to talk to a two-legged creature was a rare joy. But seeing Song Yu’s state, Yi Yi—clever and sensible—didn’t disturb him, letting him stay quiet.

What a considerate and thoughtful master I am, Yi Yi thought, and decided she definitely deserved two catties of dried fish as a reward.

Fu Yuqian had already gone to remove his makeup. Soon, he would be sending Song Yu back to his mother.

After a moment of hesitation, Song Yu went to Fu Yuqian’s dressing room.

The door wasn’t fully closed; Song Yu gave it a push with his paw and walked in. There were only three people inside: the makeup artist, Liu Le, and Fu Yuqian.

At that moment, Fu Yuqian’s wig had already been taken off, and the sides of his face were red with a visible imprint. When he saw Song Yu come in, he immediately said, “You guys go out. I’ll handle the rest myself.”

Liu Le left as told, even thoughtfully closing the door behind him.

Song Yu hesitated and walked up to Fu Yuqian, wanting to explain, but there was no iPad at hand, and the phone screen was too small for his cat paws. So he could only use a paw to scratch on the floor, writing the two characters: “Xingyue.”

A cat writing was an incredibly adorable sight. Under normal circumstances, Fu Yuqian would’ve scooped him up into his arms and kissed his little head or his tiny mouth. But now, though the two weren’t far apart, it felt like an unbridgeable chasm separated them.

Fu Yuqian’s eyes were still bloodshot. It didn’t mar his looks, but the exhaustion was clear to see. He understood what Song Yu wanted to ask and chose his words carefully before saying, “I did it.”

Song Yu stood on the ground, craning his neck just to see Fu Yuqian’s face—just like how unbalanced their positions were. Xingyue might’ve been a small operation, but for three years, it had kept him completely trapped. And yet, Fu Yuqian had managed to take it down in less than two months.

“Do you remember when Zhao Hua came to Sheng’an to see you but spoke so rudely to Auntie Song?” Fu Yuqian continued calmly, leaving nothing out. “The way she talked made me suspect that she had something over you—something she could use as leverage. That’s why she acted so brazenly.”

“I felt something was off, so I asked my second brother—you know him, he’s a top-tier hacker—to look into Zhao Hua’s computer. That’s how we accidentally discovered what she was holding over you. I felt so heartbroken. That day I was rehearsing at the H Province TV station, but that night, I borrowed a helicopter and flew back to see you. I regretted it so much—why hadn’t I realized something was wrong earlier? I let you suffer for so long.”

“I know what you want to say: it’s your business. But I can’t, Xiaoyu. I can’t stand seeing others bully you.”

“Later, I started planning everything. When they sent Jiaye to check on you—do you remember Jiaye? He was the one who came to our house not long after you turned into a cat—I took advantage of the opportunity. I had Jiaye say certain things that made Zhao Hua panic. After confirming how many copies of the documents there were, I arranged to have them retrieved and destroyed.”

“You still had six years left on your contract. I didn’t want Xingyue to keep holding it over you, so—I destroyed them.”

Fu Yuqian had never spoken so honestly before. He was always the type to do more than he said, always planning things in his head. But when it came to Song Yu, he didn’t know how else to express his care. He wasn’t saying all this to move Song Yu, only to ease his anxiety.

Song Yu listened intently. Fu Yuqian’s sincerity made him even more unsure of how to handle these feelings.

A man this devoted, clearing all obstacles for you, with the power to shield you from everything—by all logic, Song Yu shouldn’t be hesitating anymore.

But something just didn’t feel right.

In this relationship, they were not equals. Fu Yuqian could control the rules, while he could only passively accept them. It felt like he was a puppet, and Fu Yuqian held the strings—his joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness were all in his hands.

Song Yu had never been in a relationship before, didn’t know how to navigate it. But he did know how to be grateful. So he wrote two more characters: “Thank you.”

“Xiaoyu, I did all this of my own accord. You don’t need to thank me.” Fu Yuqian looked deeply at Song Yu, his eyes filled with bottomless affection. “As for hiding things from you, I’m truly sorry.”

Song Yu shook his head. He couldn’t say anything right now. He’d wait until he returned to his human form.

Fu Yuqian could tell that Song Yu didn’t want to keep talking, so he said no more. After removing his makeup and changing clothes, he headed to the airport—his private jet was already waiting.

They had arrived via private jet too. For Song Yu, this was his second time—since cats normally had to be checked as cargo, Fu Yuqian would never let him go through that.

Back then, Song Yu had been extremely excited. Over the past three years, he’d been on countless flights, but it was his first time riding in his boyfriend’s private jet. The interior was luxuriously furnished—bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and lounge—all perfectly equipped and spacious.

On the way here, Song Yu had explored every corner, feeling like every step he took was on bundles of cash.

On the way back, Song Yu wasn’t in the mood at all. He curled up on the couch and stared out the window the whole time.

Liu Le thought the man and cat both seemed off—there was a quietly heartbreaking atmosphere around them—but she didn’t dare ask anything, afraid she might say the wrong thing. So she just popped in her earbuds and slept through the whole flight.

After getting off the plane, Fu Yuqian didn’t dare pick him up, and Song Yu had to trot behind him on all fours. He only got to rest once they were in the car. Luckily, his feline body was fit and agile—otherwise, he might not have made it.

It had been a long time since Song Yu had run that much. His paws were sore, and as he curled up into a ball, he felt even worse. He cursed himself for being weak—after all, he was the one who had refused Fu Yuqian’s affection. But now that Fu Yuqian really didn’t pick him up, he felt wronged all over again.

Love really is such torment.

When they arrived at the villa, Song Mama was surprised to see Fu Yuqian return. “Xiao Fu? Why are you back now? Have you eaten?”

Fu Yuqian had always respected her. Though she seemed calm these days, her body had become terribly thin—just skin and bones—from all the worry over Song Yu.

He truly regretted everything.

“Auntie,” Fu Yuqian said, but the moment he spoke, he felt a tightness in his chest. His voice caught, but he forced himself to continue, “I’m sorry. There’s something I’ve been hiding from you.”

Seeing how serious he was, Song Mama grew puzzled. “What’s the matter, Xiao Fu? Take your time—don’t rush. Here, sit and have some water.” She poured him a glass.

Fu Yuqian calmed his emotions and began, “Auntie, I hid the truth about why Song Yu hasn’t woken up. You may not believe me—it might sound fantastical—but Song Yu hasn’t stayed unconscious by choice. His soul is trapped in Yi Yi’s body.”

Song Mama was stunned. She looked down at Song Yu. “Xiao Fu, what are you talking about?”

Song Yu called out softly, “Mom.”

Fu Yuqian pulled out a tablet, unlocked it, and opened the notepad app. Song Yu stretched out a paw and typed: Mom, it’s really me, Xiao Yu. I don’t know what happened—I turned into Yi Yi. Don’t be scared, I’m okay.

Song Mama saw with her own eyes that Yi Yi had typed that message. Xiao Fu had no reason to deceive her. “Xiao Yu? H-How did this happen to you?”

Song Yu jumped into her arms, wrapping his front paws around her neck, and sobbed. Song Mama immediately hugged his small body and comforted him, “Don’t be scared, Xiao Yu. Mom’s here. I’ll find a way to turn you back. Don’t be afraid.”

Song Yu cried bitterly. Fu Yuqian wanted so badly to hold him too, to comfort him—but he no longer had the right.

“Auntie, I had already suspected that Xiao Yu had become my cat, but I didn’t say anything. I wanted to use this chance to change the way he saw me, to make him fall in love with me.” Seeing Song Mama and Song Yu’s tears felt like fire scorching his heart. “I’m sorry. I was selfish.”

Song Mama had grown very fond of Fu Yuqian over this period, even treating him like a nephew. But now that it involved her son, she couldn’t let it go. Still, she couldn’t bring herself to be too harsh—because she’d seen how good Fu Yuqian had been to Song Yu. She was grateful.

“How could you be so foolish?” Her voice trembled with tears. “If you love someone, how can you use tricks?”

Fu Yuqian’s hands clenched unconsciously. Yes—true love is built on sincerity. How could he have tried to take a shortcut through manipulation?

But it was too late for him to realize that now.

His eyes reddened, and he couldn’t say anything more. All he could do was keep apologizing.

Like Song Yu, Song Mama didn’t have the heart to say anything too harsh. Instead, she asked, “When will Xiao Yu be able to return to normal?”

Fu Yuqian quickly replied, “I’ve already called Jiaye. He should be here soon.”

Just as he spoke, his phone rang. It was Jiaye—he had arrived.

Author’s Note:

I’ll finish this arc as soon as I can!

Originally, when I planned this part, I didn’t think it would be so angsty—I thought it would be fun. But once the characters took shape and developed their own minds, I realized how shallow the initial concept was. It’s been painful to write.

But don’t worry—there’s a big batch of sweetness coming up! Hang in there, cuties! The sugar is on the way!
