Jiang Yi sobbed uncontrollably in the delivery room, startling Jiang Qionghua and Ning Wenying who thought something had gone wrong during childbirth and rushed in anxiously.
Seeing Jiang Yi collapsed over Jiang Sixian’s body crying hysterically, both mothers didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Ning Wenying exchanged glances with Jiang Sixian lying on the bed for a long moment before going over to stroke her daughter’s head and check on her condition.
After confirming Jiang Sixian was fine, Jiang Qionghua happily went to hold her granddaughter. The two grandmothers took turns holding the baby before reluctantly handing her to the nurses and turning their attention back to their daughters.
Watching Jiang Yi still hiccuping from crying, Jiang Qionghua helplessly pulled her up, saying things like “Come on, let’s go” and “We should leave the delivery room first,” following the doctors and nurses wheeling the delivery bed back to the ward while dragging Jiang Yi along.
Back in the recovery room, Jiang Yi listened to the doctor’s postpartum instructions between sniffles, then assisted the nurses in cleaning Jiang Sixian until she was comfortably settled in bed.
After completing all this, Jiang Yi hiccuped and asked Ning Wenying with teary eyes: “Mom… where’s the baby?”
Ning Wenying looked at her helplessly: “Now you remember your daughter? The nurses took her for cleaning, she’ll be back soon. By the way, have you decided on a name?”
Jiang Yi sniffled and answered: “We did, the one we agreed on before.”
Ning Wenying smiled and asked: “The one Sixian chose, Jiang Sixia?”
Jiang Yi shook her head: “No, Qiji (Miracle).”
Ning Wenying pursed her lips, looking past Jiang Yi to meet her daughter’s smiling eyes: “Then let’s register it as Jiang Sixia for the official name.”
Jiang Sixian smiled sweetly: “Okay, Mom.”
Jiang Yi looked between Ning Wenying and Jiang Sixian, tearfully asking: “Didn’t we agree to go with my choice?”
Ning Wenying sighed: “We can listen to you, but aren’t you afraid the child might resent you when she grows up? ‘Miracle’… she’ll definitely get teased by other kids.”
Jiang Yi quickly defended: “What’s wrong with Qiji? It has such beautiful meaning, sounds like a blessed child, a gift from heaven.”
Jiang Qionghua couldn’t help interjecting: “Following that logic, we might as well name her ‘Gift from Heaven’ then.”
Jiang Yi actually considered this: “That works too, that name would be fine.”
Seeing her seriously contemplating this, Jiang Sixian quickly intervened before she could make it official: “Alright alright, listen to me – the official name will be Jiang Sixia, nickname Qiji, okay?”
Jiang Yi might not listen to others, but she always listened to Jiang Sixian. She nodded reluctantly: “Fine, we’ll do it that way then.”
Hearing this, everyone present breathed a sigh of relief. Jiang Sixian looked up and exchanged a knowing smile with Ning Wenying.
Seeing her daughter’s pale face, Ning Wenying said: “Let Sixian rest now. Qionghua, let’s go see the baby. Xiao Yi, stay here with Sixian, we’ll bring the baby to you later.”
Jiang Yi nodded eagerly, her eyes still red: “Okay, thank you Mom.”
After seeing them off, Jiang Yi sniffled and turned to Jiang Sixian. She gently brushed aside Jiang Sixian’s disheveled bangs and asked tenderly: “Does it still hurt?”
Jiang Sixian shook her head: “With you here, the pain isn’t so noticeable.”
Jiang Yi’s eyes welled up again: “Nonsense, I’m not pain medication, it must still hurt. Jiang Sixian, let’s not have any more children after this. I’ll get sterilized.”
“One Qiji is enough for us.”
Jiang Sixian smiled softly at her: “Are you sure one miracle is enough?”
Jiang Yi held her hand, eyes shining: “Sometimes, one miracle is all a lifetime needs.”
She leaned down to kiss Jiang Sixian’s forehead: “Thank you, Jiang Sixian.” Thank you for giving me this miracle.
Jiang Sixian lifted herself slightly to kiss Jiang Yi’s cheek, smiling: “You’re welcome, Jiang Yi. You gave me a miracle too.”
Jiang Yi patted her hand gently: “Sleep now, you’ve worked hard all night. I’ll stay right here with you, not going anywhere.”
Jiang Sixian teased lightly: “Not even to see your miracle?”
Jiang Yi smiled in response: “Though Qiji is important, you’re my heaven-sent blessing. Staying with you is how miracles happen.”
Jiang Sixian pretended to scold: “So cheesy.” Then she patted the space beside her: “Come up here, you haven’t slept all night either. Lie down with me.”
“Okay.” Jiang Yi quickly climbed onto the bed, carefully positioning herself to avoid Jiang Sixian’s sore areas, curling up beside her and soon falling asleep while holding her.
When Jiang Qionghua and Ning Wenying returned later pushing a baby bassinet, they found the young couple already fast asleep together.
Jiang Qionghua glanced at the bed, then down at the baby in the bassinet sucking her tiny fingers, and muttered disapprovingly: “How irresponsible!”
But she couldn’t help gently stroking the baby’s smooth cheek, cooing: “Good baby, be obedient, Grandma will spoil you.”
Ning Wenying also sighed, pushing the bassinet back out: “Let them sleep, they’ve been anxious all night, they deserve some rest.”
After closing the door behind them, the two grandmothers walked down the hallway doting on their granddaughter.
Only after returning the baby to the nursery did they realize – had Jiang Yi and Jiang Sixian even properly looked at their child after the birth?
Tsk, these young people were so unreliable.
By the time Jiang Yi and Jiang Sixian finally paid proper attention to their child, it was already afternoon. After some rest, a slightly recovered Jiang Sixian urged Jiang Yi to bring the baby over.
Excited, Jiang Yi jumped out of bed to fetch their daughter.
Using skills learned from parenting classes, Jiang Yi expertly cradled the baby. Looking down at the fair-skinned infant sucking her fingers in her arms, she happily told Jiang Sixian: “Her nose looks like yours, her face too – so adorable, she’ll definitely grow up beautiful.”
Then she frowned slightly: “But the eyebrows are like mine, looks a bit fierce, probably will be quite formidable.”
Jiang Sixian laughed: “Isn’t that good? No one would dare bully her at school.”
Jiang Yi gently stroked the baby’s cheek with her finger: “Even if she looked like you no one would bully her – too pretty, everyone would want to protect her.”
Jiang Sixian’s cheeks warmed at the unexpected compliment: “You really…” Only choosing moments like these to say such things.
Jiang Yi looked at her puzzled: “What about me?”
Jiang Sixian sighed: “Had enough holding her? Put her on the bed, I want to hold her too.”
Jiang Yi reluctantly placed the baby beside Jiang Sixian so she could see her by turning slightly.
Gazing at their child, Jiang Sixian’s expression softened. When she reached out to touch the baby’s face, the little one suddenly grabbed her finger tightly.
Surprised, Jiang Sixian looked up at Jiang Yi excitedly: “Jiang Yi, she’s holding me!”
Jiang Yi smiled: “Of course, you’re her mom.”
Mom… Only now did Jiang Sixian truly feel she and Jiang Yi had a child together. She looked at Jiang Yi and said: “I’m so happy to be her mother.”
Smiling softly, she beckoned Jiang Yi: “Come, let’s take a family photo.”
Jiang Yi happily leaned in, holding the baby while pressing her head against Jiang Sixian’s as they smiled for the camera under Jiang Sixian’s direction.
“Give me your phone,” Jiang Sixian said.
Jiang Yi obediently handed it over. Jiang Sixian opened the newly taken photo – the two of them close together holding their baby, radiant smiles making it unmistakably a picture of “happiness.”
After gazing at it a moment, Jiang Sixian opened WeChat Moments, typed “Family” and posted the photo.
Soon, Jiang Yi’s phone buzzed with notifications. Holding the baby, she checked to find her friends list flooded with knife emojis.
Puzzled, she opened a message from a Class A classmate – sure enough, a row of knives.
What did this mean?
Jiang Yi scratched her head, showing Jiang Sixian: “What do your classmates mean by this?”
Jiang Sixian glanced at it, then opened her Class A group chat: “I announced the baby news – my side is all red envelopes.”
Jiang Yi realized she wasn’t exactly popular.
But she had her own friends – soon Chen Wanzhou and the class monitor appeared with celebratory fireworks and red envelopes in the Class B group, creating a festive atmosphere.
After praising how adorable the baby was, the class monitor declared: “Even if our grades never surpass Class A’s, it’s fine – our Jiang Yi married their class monitor and now they have a love child! From today, our class holds the upper hand!”
Jiang Yi couldn’t help responding: “Correction – I married into Jiang Sixian’s family, thank you.”
Perhaps because of this clarification, she soon received her own flood of celebratory messages and red envelopes.
Jiang Yi didn’t accept the money, only promising in the group to invite everyone to the baby’s full moon celebration.
After an hour of announcing the news to friends and family, they finally relaxed. Seeing Jiang Sixian tired, Jiang Yi took her phone away, gently placing the baby beside her as she asked tenderly: “Is this really okay?”
Jiang Sixian pretended not to understand: “What do you mean?”
Jiang Yi brushed her hair back: “Announcing the baby like this to everyone, are you sure it’s alright?”
Jiang Sixian played with the baby’s hand, then looked up at Jiang Yi with a soft smile: “Isn’t this happy news worth sharing? It’s nothing shameful, why wouldn’t we tell people?”
Jiang Yi hesitated before saying seriously: “I’m worried people might gossip when you return to school.”
Jiang Sixian looked down at their child: “I’m not afraid of gossip or what others think. I’ve heard all kinds of nonsense since childhood. People will talk regardless – what matters is that I’m happy.”
She met Jiang Yi’s eyes firmly: “Being with you makes me happy.”
Jiang Yi gently booped her nose, smiling adoringly: “I’m glad you feel that way. Me too – happiest when I’m with you.”
Life is short after all – what matters most is being happy.
