Chen Jiu’s eyes reddened with emotion when he saw the familiar yet unfamiliar wooden box.

Raising his hand to rub his eyes, Chen Jiu’s hands trembled as he took out the wooden box and opened it.

Inside the box lay a finely carved jade pendant of gentle texture.

As the box opened, the jade pendant emitted a faint glow that, though subtle, was impossible to ignore.

This was the only thing left to him by his late father, who had specifically instructed him not to let anyone know about it unless he trusted them deeply and not to take it out unless absolutely necessary.

Chen Jiu heeded his father’s words and hid the jade pendant well. In his previous life, if it weren’t for the deceit of Qian Yun and Chen Ling, he would not have foolishly taken it out for them to sell for silver.

Now, apart from his father Chen Guangren, others likely assumed that his father had left him a fortune as a dowry, not realizing that the so-called fortune was this jade pendant.

Thinking of his father, Chen Jiu felt a mix of emotions.

He quickly shook his head to dispel his thoughts, took out the jade pendant, put the wooden box back in place, and moved the box of clothes back.

Once everything was restored to its original state, Chen Jiu wiped his hands clean, changed into a gray long robe, hid the jade pendant on his person, and opened the door.

“Brother, why did it take you so long to change clothes?”

As soon as he stepped out, Chen Ling came over, grabbing his arm and speaking in a tone that was part coquettish, part complaining.

Chen Jiu pretended not to notice her tone, gently pushing away her slippery hand, and with a guilty look, said, “I’m sorry, I just recovered from a severe illness and my body is a bit weak. I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.”

His body was indeed weak; just moving a box and changing clothes made him break out in a sweat.

Chen Ling, however, thought he was pretending and rolled her eyes in secret before quickly returning to normal.

She took out a handkerchief and began to wipe the sweat from Chen Jiu’s forehead with a look of concern, as if she had made an important decision, biting her lip and saying, “How about this, brother? You shouldn’t go out for now. It’s just a purse. At worst, I’ll just say it’s lost. Even if people gossip, I’ll endure it!”

Chen Jiu was sick of her pretense. Feeling unwell due to his illness, he accidentally blurted out his true thoughts, “Then let’s not go out, sister. I’ll go back to my room to rest.”

“Hey, brother!” Chen Ling hadn’t expected him to take her suggestion so readily and quickly grabbed his sleeve in a hurry.

Chen Jiu sneered inwardly, but weakly replied, “Brother was just joking. Let’s go.”

“Brother, wait!” After taking just a few steps, Chen Ling called out to him again.

Chen Jiu turned back, looking puzzled, and quietly waited for what was next.

Just like in his previous life, Chen Ling anxiously said, “Brother, you haven’t taken your medicine yet. I’ll go get it for you!”

The Chen family’s house wasn’t large, considered average in Shui Lian Village. It was planting season, and there was still some time before dark. Chen Jiu’s father, Chen Guangren, and his stepmother, Lan Shi, had gone out to the fields and hadn’t returned yet. His half-brother, Chen Fu, had gone out to play, while his other brother, Chen Gui, had gone to a private school. Therefore, only Chen Jiu and Chen Ling were at home.

The house was very quiet. Chen Jiu looked at the setting sun in the west, listening to the sounds coming from the kitchen, his eyes cold.

“Brother, the medicine is ready and still warm. Drink it quickly!” Chen Ling moved swiftly, bringing out the medicine in no time.

Chen Jiu’s eyes cleared up, and with a look of gratitude, he thanked her, calmly took the bowl of medicine, and drank it all in one gulp.

He used to fear taking medicine because it was bitter, but later he realized that nothing was more bitter than the heart.

Isn’t this just to ruin him and force him to marry Silly Zhao?

Fine, he’ll marry!
