L1LZDGD Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Just a few minutes earlier…

Xiaozhi, the man-eating plant, had reached a position several hundred meters from the Base. From afar, it spotted a large mass of dark clouds gathering on the horizon.

The surrounding weather was clear, making the presence of this dark cloud formation highly unusual. It was most likely created by a Human Ability User.

Xiaozhi cautiously stopped, hiding behind the ruins to observe.

Soon, it and several other plants that had poked their heads out saw fireballs soaring into the sky, concentrating their attacks on a single point.

Luobo estimated they were nearing their destination. It woke up just then and joined them, tilting its head curiously. “Moo?”

Xiaozhi widened his mouth. Qian Hui, who was standing near its teeth, pulled out a telescope. “Are there humans over there?”

As the plants peered into the distance, Mimosa nervously trembled its leaves.

Xiaokui conveyed a message through its radiant light. Mimosa informed Qian Hui and the other plants that it had sensed the aura of a Special-Grade Mutant Plant.

The Human Ability User over there… was likely attacking a mutant plant.

“Moo?!”

What?!

Luobo reacted fastest. It slapped its head, launching a carrot spike that shot straight toward the target.

Before leaving, it let out a soft “woo” to signal that Xiaozhi and Lajiao, the two vice-captains, would take charge while it went ahead to investigate.

The distance was too great to assess the situation, but Mimosa’s abilities were exceptional, almost never failing.

If it was a Special-Grade Mutant Plant, it had to be one they knew from the Small Courtyard!

The news struck Qian Hui like a bolt from the blue, filling him with both delight and deep concern. He called out to Luobo’s retreating figure, “Luobo, be careful! Stay safe!”

Luobo departed first, and Lajiao quickly organized the next steps.

The plants emerged from Xiaozhi’s mouth, those unable to fight—including Xiaokui—remaining by Qian Hui’s side.

Uncertain of the situation, Lajiao decided they couldn’t afford to split up. They would proceed together, deal with any humans they encountered along the way, and search for Luobo and the other Special-Grade Mutant Plant.

Thus, the Plant Squad’s entire combat force gathered and set off as a group.

Several plants waved goodbye to Qian Hui, Xiao Guo among them, before leaping swiftly through the ruins.

Xiaozhi followed as well, shrinking its massive form to trail at the rear. With its departure, the responsibility for Qian Hui’s protection fell to Nan Tingjin.

Qian Hui could only remain where he was, his heart pounding with anxiety as he continued to survey the distant scene through his binoculars.

Meanwhile, Luobo had drawn closer to the dark cloud.

The wind in mid-air was so fierce that it could barely keep its eyes open, and it saw the lightning gathering within the cloud about to strike.

Luobo braced itself and, in one swift motion, split into over a hundred carrot spikes.

The spikes shot sideways against the wind like raindrops, hurtling into the dark cloud at tremendous speed.

Boom!

A muffled explosion shook the air as the cloud’s interior flashed with light. The cloud itself visibly dispersed.

The Human Ability Users below were forced to halt their attacks, exclaiming in shock, “What’s going on?”

Seeing the effectiveness of its tactic, Luobo split off another wave of carrot spikes to bombard the cloud while continuing its search.

Then, it spotted a pale green cabbage scurrying through the ruins. Luobo paused in surprise.

So it’s a cabbage…

With no time to ponder further, it directed the sharp spikes in its grasp downward.

Remote attacks rained down from all directions, forcing the cabbage to focus on dodging. It hadn’t even noticed the danger overhead.

For a moment, it wondered why the massive, ominous cloud hadn’t unleashed its lightning yet.

Another fireball streaked past its side. The cabbage dodged again, catching a glimpse of an orange object hurtling toward it.

Instinctively assuming it was another long-range attack from a Human Ability User, Cabbage swung its fist to intercept it head-on.

To its surprise, the orange object moved, dodging the blow. Cabbage hastily landed and steadied itself.

Luobo, clearly displeased, shouted loudly, “Ugh!”

Cabbage lowered its fist, stunned. “Ugh?”

Wait… is that Luobo?

At that moment, charred carrot chunks began falling from the sky.

The two plants stared at each other, equally bewildered.

Luobo and Cabbage had never gotten along well, often brawling in the Plant Courtyard.

Both were offensive plants—one specializing in close combat, the other in ranged attacks—so they were frequently paired together to fend off zombie invasions.

Over time, their mutual disdain grew. Luobo mocked Cabbage’s punches as slow as an elderly zombie’s, while Cabbage derided Luobo’s carrot spikes as soft as overcooked noodles.

In truth, both were formidable. Luobo’s attacks covered a wide area, while Cabbage disdained hiding behind Xiao Guo, often standing at the front lines to block any approaching zombies.

Whenever their conflicts escalated into fights, Qian Hui would intervene, pacifying each of them separately.

After arriving here, Qian Hui had vanished without a trace. The plants of the Small Courtyard had scattered, and Luobo and Cabbage never saw each other again.

Luobo’s gaze swept over Cabbage from head to toe. “Hmph.”

Its eyes seemed to say, After all this time, how did you end up like this?

Cabbage didn’t back down. It raised its boxing glove and jabbed it near Luobo’s face. “Ugh?”

Still as skinny as a noodle, barely thicker than my fist. Haven’t you eaten in ages?

For a moment, the two plants glared fiercely at each other. Just then, three or four Wind Blades flew toward them from the distance.

Cabbage reacted faster, pulling Luobo behind a half-collapsed low wall.

The second wave of carrot spikes had been exhausted, and the dark clouds overhead began to regroup, pressing down like a heavy blanket.

Now wasn’t the time for reminiscing. Luobo patted Cabbage’s shoulder, urging him to follow. The Plant Squad must be on their way.

Cabbage tilted his head in confusion. “Ugh?”

The Plant Squad? What Plant Squad?

Luobo grunted vaguely, implying Cabbage would understand when he saw them.

It slapped its forehead a few times, then unleashed a third wave of carrot spikes. The projectiles circled the area before scattering in all directions.

The Human Ability User opposite them was cautious, maintaining a distance that reduced the accuracy of Luobo’s carrot spikes, but it was enough for now.

Cabbage nodded, hoisted a stone slab for defense, and followed closely behind Luobo.

Though they had often quarreled and fought in the past, Cabbage was genuinely happy to see the plants from the Small Courtyard again.

Especially given the recent crisis, it was no wonder the lightning had been delayed. This time, Luobo had arrived just in time to save him.

Cabbage grew even more curious about the “Plant Squad” Luobo had mentioned.

The two plants traveled together, Luobo identifying the direction from which the Plant Squad was likely to approach.

The counterattack of carrot spikes had significantly slowed the Human Ability User’s assault. The two plants moved through the ruins as a team.

Before long, Cabbage spotted a familiar figure in the distance.

He exclaimed in delight, “Woo!”

It was Xiaozhi, the man-eating flower!

Wait… there seemed to be more than just Xiaozhi.

Beside Xiaozhi, a brown mass steadily expanded until it transformed into a medium-large nut, which planted itself firmly in the ruins with a loud thud.

On the other side, the nut continued to grow, then rolled halfway over, forcibly pushing back the Human Ability User and crushing one of their right feet.

As the plant squad arrived, they discovered a nearby human squad.

The base had deployed three teams, each with at least twenty members, stationed in different directions to ensure the Cabbage couldn’t escape unnoticed.

Without hesitation, Xiaozhi immediately enlarged its form and charged forward.

The human squad, equipped with energy-detecting instruments, sensed an extremely high energy reading. Mistaking it for the mutated cabbage’s approach, they failed to notice the danger behind them.

By the time they heard the commotion, it was too late.

The giant man-eating flower swung its floral stem, biting and injuring two or three people in one swift motion.

The other plants followed closely, unleashing a barrage of ranged attacks.

The squad retreated hastily, simultaneously relaying news of the encounter to the other two teams via real-time communication.

Despite the suddenness of the attack, their numbers and preparedness allowed them to temporarily hold their ground.

“Those mutant plants from Black Spine Mountain!” the captain exclaimed. “How did they get here?”

The alert had been sent to all bases days ago, but no leads had emerged. The mutant plants’ movements remained a mystery, and no one had anticipated their speed.

Moreover, Wen Jue’s directives had made no mention of this possibility…

His supernatural ability is Precognition, isn’t it? Why has he repeatedly failed against these mutant plants?

Many members of the three squads had the same thought, but no one dared to voice it first.

After a brief discussion, the three captains quickly made a decision: everyone was to immediately retreat to the base.

Those mutant plants had joined forces to wipe out Zhao Xing’s thirty-man squad…

This time, they had more personnel, but they were scattered in three different directions. By the time they could regroup, it would likely be too late.

Moreover, to capture the mutated cabbage alive, nearly all of the base’s forces had been deployed, leaving no reinforcements available.

This outpost was merely a branch of Sky Base, housing a small number of non-Ability User staff.

In short, the priority was to evacuate as quickly as possible. The base’s perimeter walls were equipped with more advanced defenses and weapons capable of withstanding the mutant plants.

Upon receiving the order, everyone abandoned their pursuit of the mutated cabbage and began retreating to the base, including the squad currently under attack by the plants.

Sensing the Human Squad’s attempt to escape, Xiao Guo couldn’t contain himself any longer.

The surrounding ruins provided ample cover. Although it hadn’t been assigned to combat duty—Lajiao had instructed it to stay back and assess the situation—it couldn’t stand by any longer.

Xiao Guo, unafraid of the attacks, simply leaped to the highest point of the ruins to keep watch.

After patiently waiting for an opening, it suddenly sprang into action.

The medium-large nut was several times smaller than the giant, not at its peak strength, but still terrifyingly powerful.

The squad watched helplessly as the large nut rolled toward them, blocking their retreat and continuing to advance.

They scrambled backward, only to collide with the man-eating flower.

Caught in a pincer attack, with ranged assaults raining down from the side, they had only one direction left to flee.

But moments later, a shower of carrot spikes rained down, piercing several members of the squad.

Amidst the ruins, a pale green cabbage charged forward, a carrot trailing behind it.

The Captain was the first to encounter the mutated cabbage. Its leaf-wrapped fist looked fresh and vibrant, but felt like a heavy iron gauntlet, shattering the Captain’s nose with a single blow.

Seeing this, Xiaozhi swung its floral stem and growled menacingly, preparing to meet the cabbage’s advance.

Within half an hour, the Human Ability Users of the squad had all been neutralized.

These men were from Sky Base, veterans of capturing and taming mutant plants. Xiaozhi showed no mercy, finishing off the last survivor.

Unfortunately, the remaining two squads were too far away and had likely already returned to base.

Luobo didn’t plan to linger in the area either. It had no idea what the situation was inside the base, so it wanted to return to Qian Hui first, then find a safe place to rest and figure out how to rescue the imprisoned mutant plants.

Under its leadership, the Plant Squad quickly departed. Xiaozhi shrank its body and trailed at the rear, its flower stalk sweeping away any traces of their passage.

Along the way, Cabbage kept looking around with boundless curiosity.

Not only was Xiaozhi present, but Xiao Guo was there too!

Cabbage casually reached out to pat Xiao Guo’s head, but the nut dodged away.

There were also several unfamiliar plants: green pepper, potato, corn…

All of them were mid-level mutants, yet they had fought fiercely in the battle, nothing like the mid-level mutant plants Cabbage remembered.

Beside them trotted a bamboo shoot and durian. The durian seemed particularly close to Luobo, running closely beside it and nervously glancing up at the carrot, as if checking for injuries.

The unfamiliar plants were friendly too, waving and greeting Cabbage whenever their eyes met.

Cabbage glanced back at Xiaozhi trailing behind, then nudged Luobo and whined, “Wu? Wu? Wu?”

Cabbage wanted to ask if these plants were the squad Luobo had mentioned earlier. Where had Luobo found them?

And when had Luobo met Xiaozhi and Xiao Guo? Had it encountered any other plants in the Small Courtyard?

Luobo, growing impatient with the barrage of questions, nudged Cabbage and huffed.

It remained silent, letting Cabbage figure it out for itself.

Cabbage scratched it head, then suddenly seemed to realize something and looked ahead.

A familiar figure appeared in the distance. Cabbage stopped abruptly and rubbed its eyes.

Confirming it wasn’t mistaken, it broke into a run.

Qian Hui, holding Xiaokui the sunflower in his arms, waved at the returning Plant Squad.

Seeing a cabbage running toward him, he exclaimed joyfully, “Xiaojuan!”

[ The seventh faction conflict has ended. Congratulations to our side for winning! Reward: 50 Prestige Points~ ]

[ You have formed a bond with the Special-Grade Mutant Plant “Cabbage”! ]

[ Cabbage’s loyalty has greatly increased and now reaches 100%! ]

Xiao Baocai, nestled in Qian Hui’s arms, parted Xiaokui’s leaves to peek out.

That unfamiliar Special-Grade Mutant Plant must also be Qian Hui’s friend. What kind of plant was it…?

As the cabbage rushed closer, Xiao Baocai froze, its eyes widening in disbelief. “Ehh—?”

Hesitantly, it lowered its head, then glanced back at itself.
