RIACMET chapter 152

Change of circumstances

After submitting the medical report and receiving temporary reassignment, the team members returned to their regular duties.

Xiaoqi also underwent a routine checkup. A small patch of fur was trimmed and blood was drawn for laboratory testing.

In the following days, Jiang Nian took Xiaoqi to the farm in the morning, looked after the shop in the afternoon, and handed the little guy over to Zhou Rongbin after work at night. The fluffy child adapted surprisingly well.

The previously desolate wasteland was now full of life. In addition to people with superpowers and their families, more and more ordinary people were showing interest in renting plots on the farm.

To encourage civilians to rent land and participate in the planned agricultural expansion, the base authorities publicly announced the progress of their soil purification drug. Without the drug, many people would be unable to rent farmland in the future.

As a result, quite a few people rented an acre, or even just half an acre, of land and waited. It seemed like participation itself was what mattered most.

Some people even started building livestock pens to raise poultry, livestock, and other animals they had found.

Although planting hadn’t officially begun, construction and renovations were progressing steadily.

Jiang Nian’s farm renovations had reached the final stages. Recently, he had been providing lunch, snacks, and drinks for the builders. He was straightforward and honest, and the foreman was kind as well.

He was given detailed suggestions for the fencing, livestock areas, and plot divisions, and the work was carried out with care.

By early June, the “Niannianyouyu” nameplate had been hung up, the final payment had been made to the contractors, and the farm’s transformation was officially complete.

The entire farm stretched horizontally across the land and was surrounded by a wall made of a mixture of brick and stone. A large iron gate faced the main road, providing convenient vehicle access.

The area inside the wall was divided into three main sections. To the left of the entrance was the owner’s activity zone.

This included a parking area, a lounge, an equipment room, and a small storage building, covering about one acre in total.

Across the irrigation canal in the center was the livestock breeding area. The main structure was made of brick and stone and had metal fencing. It had four large rooms that were subdivided into smaller rooms, covering around one acre, or 800 square meters.

To the right of the breeding area was another canal and three large ponds.

In short, the owner’s area, the livestock zone, and the ponds occupied half of the farm.

The remaining two acres were designated for cultivation and divided into three equal sections by the canal.

The vegetable field and seedling area were closest to the ponds. There were plans to build greenhouses using plastic sheeting, but for now, only the frames had been set up.

Next was a warehouse with a steel frame and a half-transparent, half-shaded roof. On the far right was an open field with nothing blocking the view.

Considering the special climate conditions, each zone could easily be adjusted to grow different crops, and the layout was flexible.

Both the agricultural management staff and the construction foreman had suggested this design. Most farms in the area had been renovated similarly.

All the fields were equipped with sprinkler irrigation systems, and a large pond was prepared to supply water. The materials were rare and expensive, but we are satisfied to have created a high-value area.

There was still about a month left before the extreme heat wave arrived, and the current daytime temperatures ranged from 37 to 40 degrees Celsius.

Once it stabilized at 40 degrees, the temperature would skyrocket to 70 degrees—hot enough to roast a person—in a straight line.

Jiang Nian figured that he wouldn’t be diligent enough to work in the fields under such brutal conditions, so he wasn’t planning to start planting just yet.

Instead, he visited the farm every day for a few hours to purify the soil and see if the contamination returned. After all, this wasn’t a small flowerpot; no one knew how deep the pollution went.

His five-acre farm was completely covered by his superpower. At the same time, he experimented with various purification methods.

For example, he purified water first and then used it for irrigation. This method also worked, though the effect was weaker.

This method could be used after planting began and would still be helpful since the irrigation water would penetrate deep into the soil.

The farm was located near a guard station where soldiers frequently patrolled and drones were banned from flying overhead. As long as he closed the gates, no one would notice him using his superpowers.

After nearly a week of focused training, it was mid-June, and Jiang Nian’s superpower range had reached 499 meters.

However, once he reached that threshold, he couldn’t progress any further. No matter how hard he tried to exhaust his superpower to force a breakthrough, he couldn’t do it, and he started to get frustrated.

Just as Jiang Nian was worrying about his powers, something happened.

The rescue team that Cheng Jing’s younger brother had joined revealed their location as they approached South City Base and were intercepted by S Base personnel, who claimed to be negotiating with a professor who studied evolved superpowers.

Their approach sounded impressive and “sincere,” but they were too forceful. They even wanted to take the entire rescue team with them.

The whole thing happened suddenly, and Cheng Jing’s brother hadn’t expected the situation to deviate so much from the plan.

Jiang Nian told Cheng Jing that in his previous life, Xia Weiwei’s father had never left S Base. He never imagined the man would travel here just to fight for a brain-evolved mutant.

This shift in events meant there were now major divergences in the timeline.

These changes clearly demonstrated just how paranoid Xia Weiwei’s father and S Base had become in their pursuit of brain-evolved mutants.

“…”

Since this matter involved Cheng Jing’s family, South City Base decided, after much deliberation, to let Cheng Jing and Yang Kai lead a team to provide backup.

Along with their own team members, some base personnel would also be deployed. Cheng Jing would oversee the superpowered individuals while Yang Kai would lead a team of soldiers equipped with advanced weaponry.

However, when the final decision was made, Liao Yu was excluded, since water storage at the base was critical.

Watching everyone else prepare for action, Master Liao felt left behind—just another “base orphan.”

That same night, once the news spread, Xia Weiwei left South City Base, taking with her all the superpowered individuals she had recruited, as well as any valuable equipment.

The situation was under control, and Xia Weiwei had a legitimate reason for leaving. To avoid unnecessary conflict, South City Base didn’t try to stop her. After making some quick adjustments, Cheng Jing’s team left early the next morning.

While packing up, Jiang Nian, who had been thinking things over for days, finally asked,

“Brother Jing, if you see Chen Yue and the others, could you not touch them yet? Can you bring them to me first?”

If the whole group was there, Chen Yue’s family would definitely be among them. No matter what happened after this confrontation, Xia Weiwei and her people wouldn’t be able to stay here anymore.

Cheng Jing pulled him into a hug and comforted him gently.

“Leave it to me, all right? You don’t need to worry about anything.”

Jiang Nian pushed him away and said seriously,

“Brother Jing, I want to handle them myself.”

“Niannian…”

Cheng Jing hesitated.

Jiang Nian shook his head and said firmly,

“I know you don’t want me to get my hands dirty, but I want to take revenge with my own two hands. I want to wash away those disgusting scars with their blood. I want to give them hope, then watch them fall into despair and die—just as I did in my past life. I…”

“Don’t say anything. I promise you…”

Cheng Jing couldn’t refuse him anymore.

“I’ll capture or restrain that person and bring them back to you.”

Jiang Nian grinned.

“Thanks, Brother Jing. Make sure you stay safe out there.”

Cheng Jing hugged him tightly again.

“All right, it’s still early. Go back to sleep. Don’t wander around in this heat.”

“Got it.”

“…”

After seeing Cheng Jing off, Jiang Nian went back to the bedroom. He couldn’t sleep. He lay there, his mind drifting in all directions.

He couldn’t go with them. He felt anxious and helpless. All he could do was silently pray that everything would go smoothly.

When Cheng Jing returned, he would have to face his family. Although Cheng Jing said he had already told them everything and that his parents and younger brother liked Jiang Nian, he was still nervous.

After all, he had been the one to “kidnap” their son and leave him, and now he had the nerve to come back.

What kind of normal family would be okay with that?

He imagined a tragic love story where the couple was torn apart by the Jing family’s objections.

“…”
