RIACMET chapter 204

One Trap After Another

“Niannian?”

Sensing that something was wrong, Cheng Jing quickly asked.
“What is it?”

Electronic signals came and went in waves. Jiang Nian stared at the abnormal situation ahead, his supernatural senses swiftly analyzing the cause.

“That fog isn’t an illusion. It’s a superpower with energy-blocking properties. It’s interfering with the magnetic field. That’s probably why our drones crashed.”

Superpowers often counteract one another. No matter how strong someone was, they would be powerless against their natural nemesis.

Even this time, the non-combatant role of the support type couldn’t make a difference.

Yang Kai stared straight ahead, muttering to himself.
“An illusion conjured by a high-level psychic system, and the power-blocking fog is disrupting electronics and cutting us off from the outside world. Even if we manage to break free from the illusion, we’ll still be trapped in this thick fog.”

“There are thousands of zombies surrounding us. If we get caught, we’re done for. Forget ordinary people—even those with superpowers wouldn’t be able to escape…”

It was a one-way ticket. That much was clear. If their team hadn’t arrived, this trap would have gone undiscovered.

Their special abilities couldn’t pierce the dense fog, which kept closing in.

Fortunately, within Chu Yi’s legion, there was someone like Li Liang, an ability user of the wind element, who kept the thick fog at bay.

From above, one could see a clear boundary where Jiang Nian’s supernatural purification power clashed with the dark fog, splitting Guanshan Prison cleanly in two.

On one side was the blue-white glow of purification, and on the other was the thick, almost sticky fog. Shadowy zombie figures loomed silently, inching closer.

Bang—
Bang—

After confirming with Cheng Jing and Chu Yi, Jian Cheng fired two shots into the fog.

The bullets vanished into the fog without making a sound or leaving an impact or ricochet. In the next moment, however, countless bullets flew silently out of the fog.

Lu Ningzhou and Zhao Lei quickly joined forces to create a barrier and fend off the attack. This confirmed that the fog completely suppressed sound.

Chu Yi turned to Tang Ji.
“Xiao Ji, is your ability effective against this fog?”

Tang Ji shook his head.
“No, my power needs a clear target to suppress. If we can’t identify the controller, I won’t be able to lock them down.”

“All right. Then we’ll just have to stall until whoever is behind this shows themselves.”

Chu Yi’s expression turned grim. After a moment of thought, he asked Cheng Jing,
“Should we try bombing them out?”

“…”

Cheng Jing nodded in agreement.
“It’s just suppressing our powers. It shouldn’t affect bullets. Worth a shot.”

Swish—swish—

The gunfire ceased, but then the sharp sound of something cutting through the air could be heard.

A moment later, a metal hook attached to a chain shot out of the dense fog, followed by a five-meter-long butcher’s blade made of polished steel.

The hook glinted coldly while the cleaver, stained with fresh blood, gleamed ominously under the sun.

Had they been enveloped in the fog, they might have been sliced clean in half.

As expected, the traps were triggered one after another, as if following a pre-set program.

Bang!

Zhao Lei used his supernatural ability to conjure an iron wall, reshaping it to absorb the hook and cleaver and embed them in the ground so they couldn’t be pulled back.

Tang Yi and several other physical-type ability users in the legion activated their powers. Their bodies swelled with strength as they grabbed the chain as thick as a baby’s wrist and gave a forceful yank.

Clang!

The chain snapped from the overwhelming force. Zhao Lei secured one end to prevent injury to his teammates while the other end was rapidly pulled back into the fog.

Moments later, the fog tried to advance again, but failed. Jiang Nian shattered the illusion in time, and the new wave of bullets was blocked.

After repeating this cycle twice, things finally settled into a temporary deadlock—a delicate balance of offense and defense.

Cheng Jing looked at Chu Yi and said,
“Looks like they’ve run out of clever tricks. It’s our turn to take action now. Whether there are people or zombies behind that fog, it’s time to reveal their true faces.”

In other words, their team was well-prepared and remained calm under pressure. They hadn’t acted recklessly. If it had been any other squad, they might have been wiped out by the “unlucky victim” lying behind the door alone.

“All right.”

Chu Yi nodded and ordered the legion to prepare for a full-scale counterattack with heavy weapons.

The fog may have suppressed sound, but that didn’t mean explosions couldn’t happen. If the enemy were truly invincible, they would have devoured them by now.

Earlier, Jian Cheng had only used a handgun to test it—too weak to yield a meaningful result. Now, rocket launchers and mortars were being fired in succession. Though the sounds were absorbed into the fog, zombie remains and crystal cores continued to be blasted out.

Though it looked satisfying, everyone present knew that if they hadn’t kept their guard up, both bullets and powers could have easily struck their own teammates.

“…”

Nearly half an hour later, the thick fog dispersed along with the smoke from the bombardment. Exposed was a battlefield covered in mangled corpses. A few remaining zombies dragged their shattered bodies forward over the remains of their own kind to attack again.

Strangely, not a single superpowered zombie had appeared.

Behind the horde, however, a row of armed men in camouflage uniforms could faintly be seen emerging from the smoke, weapons in hand.
