Boundless – Chapter 2

When the Moon Was Bright

“Loading successful. Congratulations to Repairer PF12001 for entering world (1/10). After completing all, you can change your task line. Wishing you a successful mission.”

Wen Qianshu: “Thank you.”

She opened her eyes to a book spread out before her, its pages densely packed with words. Before Wen Qianshu could take a closer look, she heard someone say with a laugh, “Let’s end with a simple one, shall we? I’ll ask someone to answer this question.”

“Wen Qianshu.”

Wen Qianshu: “…”

She asked 2333, “Do you guys have an undo function?”

She wanted to take back the “thank you” she had just said.

2333: “…No.”

The person repeated, “Wen Qianshu?”

Wen Qianshu stood up. She picked up the book in her hand and saw it was a Chinese textbook, but then she caught sight of a math test hidden underneath it, with physics formulas scribbled on the edge.

Wen Qianshu: “…”

What was this situation? What class was this, exactly?

Only then did she get a clear look at her surroundings. It was a classroom, and as far as she could see, every head was bowed. The person who had just spoken was standing at the lectern, frowning at her.

Seeing the teacher walk down from the platform, Wen Qianshu slammed the book down with a “bang,” covering the math test.

Life was truly thrilling.

Wen Qianshu’s neck was stiff as she tried to use some vague form of telepathy to ask her deskmate for help. Instead, she heard someone in the back row whisper, “The function of the title.”

Wen Qianshu wanted to die.

Wen Qianshu tried to recall her Chinese lessons. Wen Qianshu looked at the title.

Wen Qianshu failed.

Wen Qianshu: “Uh, it serves as a clue for the article, running through the entire text?”

The class erupted in laughter.

The teacher was silent for a moment, then he asked, “Do you know what I’m talking about?”

He flipped through the book to a page—“Qinyuanchun. Changsha.”

“Qinyuanchun is the name of the tune pattern, and it was written in Changsha.” The teacher tapped the desk. “It’s that simple—sit down.”

Wen Qianshu sat down, holding her forehead. Her expression was blank, but her cheeks were red.

But some people, though they may look embarrassed on the surface, are actually receiving the world line in secret.

Because this was the first world, the main system had assigned her a mission world very similar to her original one. Even the supporting character’s name was Wen Qianshu.

This mission world was based on a campus novel with a very cliché plot. The female lead was a pitiful girl whose parents were divorced, struggling through high school. The male lead was a rich second-generation heir with a family fortune, coasting through life carefreely. The female antagonist was the male lead’s childhood sweetheart; they had grown up sharing a pair of pants—ah, no, that’s not right—they had been deskmates in the same class since they were little. She had always liked the male lead and eventually used her family background to push out the female lead and successfully marry him.

And then the mission world collapsed.

Wen Qianshu commented, “Your worlds are strangely fragile.”

She had always been one to muddle through, taking things one step at a time, so she hadn’t read through the details carefully. Glancing at the current progress, the boys and girls in the high school class were already sitting separately. The female lead was named Shen Ting, and she sat—behind Wen Qianshu.

Wen Qianshu: “…”

She then looked for the female antagonist, Jiang Mingyue, who sat—next to Wen Qianshu.

How did that song go again? What a stable triangle.

Wen Qianshu called her system, “Two thousand three hundred and thirty-three?”

2333 nearly choked. “Don’t, Host. Just call me 2333.”

What a great name, Wen Qianshu thought. If this were a transmigration novel, it would make it seem like I’m always laughing—2333.

So optimistic.

Wen Qianshu optimistically asked the system, “How did your previous hosts complete their missions?”

2333 was not optimistic at all. “I’ve never guided a host on this line before.”

Wen Qianshu: “Huh?”

2333: “The Main God got screwed over before, so now they don’t hire temporary workers, only long-term contractors. The benefits are good, and they respect your preferences. That form you filled out earlier asked what kind of task line you wanted.”

Wen Qianshu: “What did I put down?”

2333: “Whatever.”

Wen Qianshu: “Huh?”

2333: “You wrote ‘Whatever’.”

Wen Qianshu: “Well, don’t sweat the small stuff.”

She flipped through the mission requirements: “Repair World Line (0/1)”

Wen Qianshu: “?”

“How is this mission even more ‘whatever’ than I am?”

2333: “…”

“Because it’s difficult, there’s a lot of freedom.”

After all, following the original world’s plot led to the protagonist’s collapse. To fix it, the repairer would have to rely on herself.

In this world, Wen Qianshu was Shen Ting’s best friend. The two of them had grown up together and were always in the same class.

Wen Qianshu found this trope very familiar: “Childhood sweethearts are running all over the place.”

System: “You’ve seen this kind of story before?”

Wen Qianshu: “Yeah, Detective Conan.”

System: “No, that’s not—”

Wake up, Host! Those two are completely different things!

Before the system could finish, the bell for the end of class rang. Someone gave Wen Qianshu a gentle nudge. She turned around and heard Shen Ting ask, “What are you thinking about?”

Wen Qianshu was stunned. Where did this cutie come from?

Shen Ting was really pretty. Big eyes, slender eyebrows, and a smile filled with the vibrant energy unique to her age. Her medium-length hair was casually tied back with a black elastic band.

She seemed to have washed her hair yesterday. Wen Qianshu could smell the faint, floral scent of her shampoo, though she didn’t know the brand.

Wen Qianshu: “I was just spacing out in class.”

They were not long into their first year of high school. The male and female leads had met but didn’t know each other. Strange, how did they get acquainted again?

Wen Qianshu used the world line like a dictionary, looking things up as she thought of them. She took a glance and discovered it was because Jiang Mingyue wanted to switch seats with Wen Qianshu. Since Shen Ting was sitting right behind her, Wen Qianshu refused, leading to an argument. Shen Ting naturally sided with Wen Qianshu, and the male lead—Fang Wenyuan—seeing things were about to get out of hand, rushed over to break up the fight, and then…

Wen Qianshu: “…”

Her head ached. She decided to give up. “2333, will you remind me about the plot points involving the male and female leads?”

2333 didn’t want to talk. 2333 also had a headache.

“We will.”

So Wen Qianshu happily gave up, but she immediately heard a “ding” from the system: “A meeting between the male and female leads occurs here. Tip: The repairer can follow the original plot.”

“Excuse me, can I switch seats with you?”

It was Jiang Mingyue’s voice.

Wen Qianshu slowly turned her head back, the word “no” on the tip of her tongue, and then—

Then she saw Jiang Mingyue’s face.

Willow-leaf eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, and skin as white as snow. She also wore a ponytail, but every strand of her hair was perfectly neat, falling smoothly. Jiang Mingyue sat up very straight, her back erect and her chin slightly tucked, which made her waist seem even more slender and her neck long and graceful, like a swan’s.

The way she looked at Wen Qianshu now, with her cold tone and distant expression, she was the very picture of an ice beauty.

Wen Qianshu: “…”

Who could resist this?

The system reminded her, “You just need to refuse. Jiang Mingyue didn’t cause any trouble over this.”

Wen Qianshu prided herself on never being busy when she could be idle. She really wanted to follow the mission’s script to avoid the extra effort of making Fang Wenyuan and Shen Ting meet, but, but—

Oh—how could she be so beautiful!

Wen Qianshu tried to resist.

Wen Qianshu couldn’t take it anymore.

Wen Qianshu chose to give up again.

Wen Qianshu even smiled. To think, she hadn’t even smiled when 2333 pulled her from her original world and saved her life.

It was clear that if this person were reincarnated as an emperor, she would definitely be a fatuous ruler who skipped morning court.

Wen Qianshu: “Sure. Let’s switch seats.”

System: “?”
