Headlights from oncoming traffic spilled through the window, darkened with smoked film.
In that brief moment, the man across the seat emerged from the shadows, his jet-black hair and eyes standing out vividly before sinking back into the dim light.
What remained unchanged was the unwavering gaze he kept fixed on Kagura.
Kagura Jinya, too, maintained his silent stare on the man—Zero.
Bound together by a mix of personal grudge and professional necessity, Kagura ‘kept’ Zero, and Zero ‘kept’ Kagura. Yet, no sentimental sense of camaraderie existed between them.
Even when they had sex, it was merely proof of their contract—a reminder to always keep the other in check.
The headlights illuminated the window once more, painting fleeting patterns across the scenery as it flowed backward outside the car.
Zero’s figure emerged again and disappeared.
Watching this, Kagura reflected.
―――How much do I really know about this man?
Zero was someone who had no desire to be understood.
And yet, at some point, Kagura had become fixated on the very thing Zero did not wish for—on the countless shadows the man carried. How could he ever hope to see them all?
Would they eventually become visible if he adapted to the darkness?
―――…And if they did, what would I…
Just as Kagura’s thoughts began to turn inward, a hand reached out from the seat across from him. A firm touch to his cheek forcibly redirected his focus back to Zero.
“Your face looks a bit gaunt.”
“Well, it’s thanks to all the domestic and foreign troublemakers running rampant.”
The Second Section of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s Organized Crime Department, tasked with handling international criminal organisations, was utterly overwhelmed by the borderless chaos of today’s lawless acts.
Zero smirked and traced his thumb along Kagura’s cheek.
“The noble protector of the nation sure has it rough.”
Zero’s nonchalant display of detachment grated on Kagura. Clicking his tongue, Kagura brushed Zero’s hand aside and called out to Kataware, who was driving the van.
“Here’s fine.”
The vehicle pulled over to the side of the road.
“See you.”
Kagura’s farewell was curt as he reached for the rear door. However, a strong hand grabbed his upper arm before he could leave.
Glancing back, he met Zero’s sharp eyes, his voice laced with tension. “You met Kiriyama today, didn’t you? No report about that?”
Kagura blinked and let out a wry chuckle. He’d been ambushed after work and dragged into this van, yet Zero hadn’t brought it up until now. It seemed odd at the time. So, that was the main issue?
“You could’ve just asked directly from the start.”
“Share everything about Kiriyama with me, even the smallest details.”
“Are you worried about me?”
“Do you have something to hide?”
Kagura let out an exasperated laugh at Zero’s relentless probing.
It was true—Prosecutor Kiriyama had visited the Metropolitan Police headquarters earlier today.
“So you’ve got the Enwu guys tailing Kiriyama as well, huh?”
“Just answer me.” With a furrow of his brow, Zero’s gaze bore down on him.
“It was just a meeting. Nothing personal.”
The notion of reporting something so trivial felt absurd—like he was some sort of lover being interrogated—and it made his stomach churn with discomfort.
This time, Kagura moved to finally exit the vehicle. His hand was on the door handle, but once again, his arm was yanked back. He was unceremoniously pushed back into his seat.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Zero cut off Kagura’s words with his own. “Drive around the area again.”
From the driver’s seat, Kataware caught on and replied, “Got it. I’ll take a wide loop.”
“Zero—”
Just as Kagura began to complain, his tie was abruptly loosened. His dress shirt’s collar was forcefully unbuttoned, almost to the point of snapping, as Zero inspected his neck to ensure there were no hickeys.
“Are you satisfied now?”
With Zero leaning over him, his hands pressed against the backrest of the seat, Kagura placed a palm on Zero’s broad chest and gave a strained smile. But Zero didn’t budge, leaning in even closer.
Those sharp, menacing eyes were mere inches away, the bluish whites of them glinting ominously.
“During the meeting, that guy was looking at you, wasn’t he?”
…It was true. During the meeting, Kiriyama had looked at Kagura multiple times.
Remembering the slimy sensation, as though a chameleon’s tongue had been crawling all over his face, Kagura shuddered.
“Don’t make me remember that.”
“I’ll make you forget,” Zero muttered, licking Kagura’s face.
“Stop it,” Kagura snapped, grabbing Zero’s head and pulling it away. His gaze flicked toward Kataware in the driver’s seat, silently pointing out his presence. Zero, however, smirked.
“What’s the big deal now? Did you forget that time I made you suck me off in front of him?”
“…”
Kagura’s first experience of being forced to perform oral on a man had happened with Kataware standing nearby.
As Kagura searched for a rebuttal, Zero’s tongue slid up his lips.
Zero pressed his knee firmly between Kagura’s thighs. When Kagura released his grip on Zero’s head to push the knee away, Zero seized the opportunity to thrust his tongue deep into Kagura’s mouth.
“Mmph—nn.”
Zero’s tongue explored his mouth, wet and insistent.
Not wanting to lose control of the kiss, Kagura fought back with his tongue. But that only seemed to encourage Zero further. Before he realised it, his shirt had been completely unbuttoned, and Zero was toying with his chest.
Zero pulled his tongue out of Kagura’s mouth with a lewd, wet sound.
“Your hips are moving.”
Zero’s expression turned feral, like a beast about to pounce on its prey.
Just as Zero lunged, Kagura drove a fist into his unguarded throat, shoving him back into the opposite seat.
At that precise moment, Kataware asked from the front, “Should I go another round?”
“Stop. I’m getting out,” Kagura replied.
Buttoning his shirt, Kagura finally opened the rear door and stepped out.
Before leaving, he gave Zero, who was clutching his throat, one last parting blow. “Don’t get too cute with the jealousy.”
Zero’s eyes widened, and a strangely conflicted expression crossed his face.
Feeling vindicated, Kagura closed the door with a satisfying thud.
At the entrance of his apartment building, he waited for the elevator. Behind him, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed. For a moment, he thought Zero had chased after him, and his body tensed.
“Good work today!”
It was only Sanae Suguru, carrying a convenience store bag as he jogged over.
“Oh, it’s just you, Glasses Otter,” Kagura muttered.
“That’s workplace harassment, you know,” Sanae said, puffing out his cheeks before tilting his head slightly.
Behind his glasses, his eyes narrowed slyly.
“Kagura-san, you’ve just come back from a date, aren’t you?”
“No,” Kagura replied immediately.
Sanae gave him a faintly disdainful look and remarked, “You’re banned from walking around outside with that X-rated face of yours.”

*Translator’s Note: That’s the end of volume 2. Yeah, that jealousy was cute, Zero. Heh! Okay, you guys may head on to read the 3rd volume after this. All the chapters are scheduled, as usual. As I’ve stated earlier, my progress was kinda fast for the first 3 volumes because I had drafted the translation last year (2024). As for the final volume, I had only recently purchased the book and haven’t had the time to read yet because of work. I will try to read during my Winter break and the drafting will probably start during that time or by next year. See you all in the next volume! -K
