Her Rose – Chapter 79

How Could She Die?

When the sports car carrying Jiang Hanguang and Meng Ziyan stopped at the foot of Yuxi Mountain, the alternating red and blue lights of police cars and their wailing sirens had already awakened the entire sleeping night.

The people who had escaped from the Feng family villa had naturally called the police. On their way down the mountain, they had already passed several police cars.

The car stopped, and the doors unlocked. A police officer in charge of receiving them immediately stepped forward to inquire, but as soon as he reached the car door, a woman getting out of the driver’s seat grabbed him by the collar.

The woman’s beautiful face was streaked with tears, her expression tightly furrowed. Her eyes were bloodshot, filled with terror and rage.

Her arms were so slender, yet the strength in her hands was so great that the tall Alpha police officer felt a momentary sense of suffocation.

Her voice was hoarse, like a dying bird letting out its final, mournful cry.

“Cheng Ying, Cheng Ying is still up there! You have to go find her!”

The officer sensed that the young lady before him was on the verge of a breakdown. He didn’t dare make any sudden moves for fear of provoking her further. He could only raise his hands and say with difficulty, “We’ve already sent people up. Please, calm down first.”

The woman clutching his collar fell silent for a moment, then slowly retracted her hand.

Her pale, slender hand trembled as she placed it on her own arm. Despite having no nails to speak of, she managed to scratch several bloody marks into her skin.

The police officer couldn’t help but shudder, casting a worried glance toward the mountaintop.

Although he didn’t know who Cheng Ying was, he thought that if his colleagues couldn’t bring that person down in one piece, there would be hell to pay right here.

Meng Ziyan emerged from the passenger seat, nodded to the officer, and ignored his surprised look at her injuries. “Can we go over there to rest first? We can give our statements later.”

Because the call had been for a murder case, the police had also brought several large ambulances. Those who wanted to leave could do so after giving their statements, while those who were frightened could rest on board.

The officer glanced at the still-trembling Jiang Hanguang and nodded helplessly. “Yes, you can have the doctors on the ambulance tend to your wounds first.”

Meng Ziyan took Jiang Hanguang’s hand to prevent her from scratching herself again and practically carried her onto the ambulance.

Throughout the entire process, Jiang Hanguang was like a lifeless doll, letting Meng Ziyan manipulate her.

Meng Ziyan sighed, instructed the two mothers to watch over Jiang Hanguang, and went to pour her a cup of hot water.

She handed the steaming cup to Jiang Hanguang, but the other woman remained motionless, her hair, disheveled by the wind, falling across her forehead. She rested her head in her hand, obscuring most of her face, revealing only lips that were pressed so tightly they had turned white.

Meng Ziyan could only sit down beside her, patting her gently and repeating the same worn-out phrase, “It’ll be okay, it’ll be okay…”

She couldn’t say anything else, because even that sentence itself felt like a lie.

In the long silence, Jiang Hanguang spoke only one sentence, “How could I have left her there alone.”

It wasn’t a question, but a statement.

On the way down the mountain, the car had sped along like a lightning bolt. The cold wind had rushed in, blowing against Jiang Hanguang’s face.

It was like a thousand knives scraping against her heart, keeping her painfully awake, forcing her to relive every terrifying thought ten thousand times over.

Would Cheng Ying be caught? What would Feng Nan do to her?

What if she died?

Jiang Hanguang didn’t want to consider this possibility, but her uncontrollable mind kept placing a bloody Cheng Ying before her eyes, over and over again.

How could she die?

I still have such a long life ahead of me, so many moments I want to spend with her.

How could she die?

How could our last time seeing each other be in that damned Feng family villa, amidst that chaotic turmoil of flitting shadows?

You’re not allowed to die!

She wanted to cry, but her tears seemed to have run dry on the journey back. At this moment, all her emotions were concentrated in the fear of losing Cheng Ying, leaving no energy to produce new tears.

Jiang Hanguang raised a hand to touch the back of her neck. Cheng Ying had kissed it, coveted it, yet ultimately chose to let it go.

Cheng Ying was always smiling, so amidst this daze brought on by terror, Jiang Hanguang recalled her smiling face.

For the first time, she hated her own cowardice so fiercely.

If only Cheng Ying had marked her. At least… she could have lived on with her scent.

“Ying, the police will be here in three minutes at the earliest!” Cheng Mantou’s urgent warning sounded in her ear. Cheng Ying dazedly and numbly stopped what she was doing.

Feng Nan, whom she had been beating for who knows how long, was now completely unrecognizable. His limbs were broken and twisted at his sides, his face was a bloody, mangled mess, and the blood seeping from his body had stained a small patch of carpet red, as if he’d been mercilessly run over by a speeding car.

But he was, astonishingly, still alive. At least for now, he was still breathing.

Cheng Ying slowly stood up. Thick blood dripped from her energy-wrapped hands, merging with the horrifying bloodstains on the carpet.

She calmly assessed Feng Nan’s injuries and made a simple judgment.

If left alone, even if he could be saved, the guy would spend the rest of his life as a vegetable.

So be it.

Like a wandering spirit whose wish had been fulfilled, Cheng Ying walked back to where the two security guards had fallen. She deactivated her weapon, destroyed the bracelet, and then put the handcuffs on herself.

An almost invisible point of light landed on her brow. After a faint sizzling sound, she collapsed silently to the ground.

Neither she nor Cheng Mantou noticed the pair of terrified eyes outside the window.

Hua Ran felt that she had been having a run of bad luck lately. Getting scammed out of her money and heart by a scumbag was one thing; she could even grudgingly accept encountering a psychopathic murderer at a banquet.

But of all things, as cars whizzed past her during the escape, hers had to break down.

Just as the tall, burly security guard was about to rush her car, she had a rare moment of cleverness. Taking advantage of her petite frame, she managed to squeeze into the gap under the car seat, narrowly escaping disaster.

She carefully peeked out from inside the car and happened to see Cheng Ying being led into the villa by two guards.

An inexplicable tightness gripped her heart, and Jiang Hanguang’s face appeared in her mind.

If something happened to this person, Jiang Hanguang would be devastated.

Although Miss Hua was lacking in intelligence, she did not lack courage. Noticing that there were no longer any guards patrolling the villa’s perimeter, she actually got out of the car quietly and, crouching low, ran to the only slightly ajar window of the villa.

Of course, she had no intention of sacrificing herself for Cheng Ying; she just wanted to see if the other woman was still breathing.

But then she saw a figure descend the stairs and, a moment later, collapse next to the guards who were already on the floor.

It was Cheng Ying?

Hua Ran’s mind went blank. How did Cheng Ying come down from upstairs? And why did she suddenly faint?

Before she could sort it out, the sound of police sirens grew closer.

#All Surveillance Lost, An Unsung Hero or a Deliberate Act?#

With such a major incident, the news was naturally impossible to contain. Several reporters on stakeout managed to photograph a person covered in blood being carried out of the Feng family villa.

Thus, not long after the police entered the villa, all sorts of speculations were already spreading online.

From the moment Feng Nan had rushed out with a knife and started hacking at people, the surveillance at the Feng family villa had been physically cut off—an act ordered by Feng Nan himself.

But strangely, the police found an astonishing amount of high-concentration fuel around the villa. If ignited, the place would have undoubtedly turned into a sea of fire.

What was both fortunate and bizarre was that when the police found this fuel, the people responsible for igniting it were lying in the bushes, sleeping so soundly they couldn’t be woken up.

Medical examination revealed that these people, like those inside the villa, had been knocked unconscious by some undetectable means.

Assuming this omnipotent unsung hero existed, why did they only stop the people from igniting the fuel, but not the ones who cut the surveillance?

Was it to cover up the truth of their own malicious assault?

Watching the doctors frantically treat Feng Nan, who looked like he could be sent directly to the crematorium, the police felt a headache coming on.

Although Feng Nan’s crimes were enough to get him sentenced to death three times over, vigilantism was still wrong.

Everyone in the villa was unconscious, and the escapees just repeated the same few lines over and over. The police had no choice but to focus their questioning on the only person who was conscious, Hua Ran.

“Miss Hua, did you see anything inside the villa?”

The police officer asked politely and gently to the pale-faced girl in front of him. She seemed to have been terrified by Feng Nan’s gruesome state. On the way to the police station, she had been silent, just staring blankly at her phone.

Hua Ran’s mind was in chaos, a whirlwind of countless thoughts.

The image of Cheng Ying descending the stairs and the bloody, mangled Feng Nan flashed alternately before her eyes, finally merging into a terrifying answer.

Feng Nan was beaten into that state by Cheng Ying?

She recalled Cheng Ying’s casual, gentle, and harmless smile, and couldn’t possibly connect her with a violent maniac who had nearly beaten someone to death.

“Miss Hua?” the officer’s questioning prompt came again. Hua Ran flinched and looked up at him.

The young officer said sincerely and gently, “You just need to tell us what you saw. We will investigate the rest.”

Hua Ran clutched the soft fabric of her dress, and Jiang Hanguang’s profile appeared in her mind again.

That woman, whom she had bullied so terribly, had extended a hand and pulled her out of a desperate situation when she was at her most helpless.

And Cheng Ying was her lover.

Hua Ran gritted her teeth and suddenly shot up like an angry little bird, putting on the nasty demeanor she had perfected through years of unreasonable antics.

“What could I have seen! I just saw a bunch of guys lying there like corpses, and nothing else! You guys took so long to get here, I was almost killed by those people! And now you have the nerve to question me!”

The officer was so startled by the sudden outburst from the Omega that he nearly fell off his chair. He quickly waved his hands, “Ma’am, please, calm down. This is just routine questioning.”

Hua Ran snorted angrily, as if she couldn’t bear it any longer. “Are you done asking? I’m going home now! If you have anything else, talk to my lawyer!”

Consider this, she thought, me repaying a bit of your favor.

Thanks to the anesthesia, Cheng Ying had a long, good sleep. When she opened her eyes again, the night had passed, and the thin hospital curtains couldn’t block the sunlight from outside.

She first saw the complex and sophisticated medical machine at the head of the bed. Her hand twitched slightly and was immediately held tightly by a pair of soft hands.

Cheng Ying turned her head and saw Jiang Hanguang sitting by the bed. She was still in the same clothes, her hair was messy, and her eyes were as red as a rabbit’s, but her face wore a rare, expressionless look.

For some reason, Cheng Ying felt a little guilty. She forced a smile and subconsciously tried to sit up.

Jiang Hanguang didn’t speak, but as Cheng Ying propped herself up, she quickly supported her shoulders and placed a pillow behind her back, allowing her to lean back comfortably.

Cheng Ying was silent for a moment, then asked a pointless question first, “Is Feng Nan okay?”

Jiang Hanguang shook her head, still looking at her like that, without speaking.

It was probably a signal for her to continue her confession.

Cheng Ying had a lot she wanted to say, but couldn’t utter a single word. She had slept all night, and her throat was painfully dry. The mental exhaustion was an even greater torment. She licked her lips, deciding to address her physical needs first. “Hanguang, I…”

Before the word “thirsty” could leave her lips, the woman’s lips pressed against hers.

Cheng Ying: “!”

Before she even had time to be surprised, Jiang Hanguang’s tongue had unreasonably crashed in.

The woman kissed her fiercely and ruthlessly, as if she wanted to devour her.

Question marks popped up in droves in Cheng Ying’s numb mind, but her body was clearly more astute than her brain and happily accepted the woman’s kiss.

Her mind went blank, the bloody and terrifying images temporarily fading away, leaving only a sweet, slick sensation.

Like a drowning person pulled from the suffocating depths of the sea, she desperately plundered the breath from the woman’s mouth.

And Jiang Hanguang, surprisingly, did not fall behind. The more ferocious she was, the harder the woman returned it.

It was as if they wanted to devour each other whole.

“Han… guang…” Meng Ziyan, carrying breakfast, pushed the door open and walked right into this terrifying scene.

The caretaker was pinning the patient to the pillow and mercilessly gnawing on her. If she didn’t know their relationship, she would have thought this was a murder scene.

“Uh, you two carry on!” Meng Ziyan closed the door without hesitation.

Cheng Ying had thought Jiang Hanguang would immediately pull away, blushing, but the woman only withdrew unhurriedly. Before leaving, she even thoughtfully circled Cheng Ying’s lips to prevent any unseemly incidents.

The woman calmly picked up a thermos from the bedside table, poured her a small cup of hot water, tested the temperature herself, then handed it to her and tucked her in properly.

“Rest well. I’m going to check on something. I’ll be right back.”

Jiang Hanguang got up and left, while Cheng Ying stared at the sloshing water in the cup in her hand.

She raised her hand, took a sip, and seriously contemplated the possibility that the sight of the blood-soaked Feng Nan had scared her into another reality.
