His hand suddenly emerged from behind his back as if performing a magic trick, instantly producing a small rabbit-shaped alarm clock. “Wake up at seven tomorrow morning. No sleeping in.”
Was he even going to control this? “Hey, don’t I have to go to school or to Fengjian anymore?” Why did she need to get up so early? It was already 3 a.m., and she was so tired.
“You can sleep after we return from the hospital.” After saying this, he shoved the alarm clock into her hand. “If you’re late, I’ll come into your room and wake you up.”
She stuck out her tongue. There was no way she would oversleep now.
As soon as her head touched the pillow, Zhong Wanqiu quickly fell asleep. She realized how wonderful sleep could be; the soft Simmons mattress made her as comfortable as a baby, and she slept blissfully.
Early in the morning, she was startled awake by the alarm clock. She hurriedly jumped up, remembering Leng Muxun’s warning that he would burst in if she didn’t get up. After washing up, she realized she had almost no clothes to change into and had to continue wearing what she had on yesterday. It felt a bit uncomfortable, but there was no other choice.
Barefoot and wearing a shirt, she hopped out of her room. In the dining area, Leng Muxun waved at her. “Come here.”
“Okay.” She skipped over. The table was already set with breakfast, probably ordered from outside: fried dough sticks, soy milk, rice porridge, and side dishes quite a spread.
She ate a few bites casually and was full. With him around, she felt a bit uneasy.
Having slept too late, she yawned repeatedly while eating.
“Go change your clothes.” After she finished eating, he glanced at her white shirt and said quietly.
“Okay, sure.” Could you tell me what was there to look at? Since he was the one who had bumped into her, he had to take full responsibility.
When she changed back into the clothes she had worn the night before, he frowned slightly but said nothing as he led her out.
With him around, everything went smoothly. The doctor had already been scheduled, and as soon as they arrived, she was examined. The X-ray results were ready in less than ten minutes. As expected, there was nothing seriously wrong, but she still needed to rest; otherwise, the injury on her leg wouldn’t heal easily.
She breathed a sigh of relief. Sometimes, spending money was worth it at least it bought peace of mind.
He drove her back to the apartment, clearly intent on having her stay there to recuperate from her leg injury.
For an entire week, Leng Muxun left early and returned late. When he left, she was still asleep, and when he returned, she was already asleep again. She treated the apartment like a convalescent home. Three meals a day were delivered punctually, and after she finished eating, someone would come to clear everything away.
A housekeeper came daily to clean the rooms on schedule. Apart from eating and sleeping, she spent her time reading and watching TV.
The study was filled with books, classics, and modern works, domestic and foreign, everything one could want. She immersed herself in the world of books, reluctant to leave. She had never experienced such a comfortable life before; it felt like she was on holiday. Completely setting aside all her work felt terrific, but she knew that once her leg healed, everything would have to return to normal. She had already decided what he had proposed. He said he wanted to give her a wedding, but it would surely be one with special circumstances. He didn’t love her and had told her not to fall in love with him. A marriage without love would neither be happy nor blessed, and she didn’t want that.
She would rather wait and hope for happiness than prematurely snuff it out in her life. That would be too cruel.
Her leg was truly healed now, and she could move freely again.
Tonight, she would wait for him to return, no matter how late. This said it all, yet tomorrow she would leave.
What he owed her was for her leg injury, but now that it had healed, there remained no ties between them.
