Yan Sui didn’t sleep for too long; after two hours, he woke up—or more accurately, was startled awake. However, Meng Ting continued to pat him gently. “It’s still early, go back to sleep.”
“If I sleep any longer, I won’t be able to sleep tonight.”
Yan Sui sat up and then gently embraced Meng Ting. The chaotic nightmare had left him with a terrible feeling, and it wasn’t until he held Meng Ting in his arms that his heart settled somewhat. He tilted his head and kissed Meng Ting’s earlobe. “We’ll sleep together tonight.”
After hearing this, Meng Ting thought about it carefully for a while before nodding. He turned his head to examine Yan Sui’s expression closely; it was indeed better than before. Then he continued to lecture the person.
“How can you not sleep? That’s not being good. Don’t do that again in the future.”
“I understand,” Yan Sui replied. He held Meng Ting for a while longer before finally getting up to take a shower and change his clothes.
He walked to the door and opened it. A servant was waiting outside. “Bring the meal up.”
After speaking, he turned back, went to the bathroom to fetch Meng Ting’s towel, and used it to wipe Meng Ting’s face and hands. He then fed Meng Ting some water. Soon after, Nanny Wang and Zhen Han brought up the meal, which included food for Yan Sui as well. They weren’t sure if he had eaten anything since yesterday.
But if Meng Ting could coax the person to sleep, he could certainly get Yan Sui to eat.
Yan Sui really hasn’t reached the point where he needs Meng Ting to coax him to eat; he first fed Meng Ting, and when Meng Ting couldn’t eat anymore, he finished the rest himself.
A while later, Gu Li and Zhen Han came in again. They continued to apply the medicine to the wound but didn’t dare to give Meng Ting any oral medication. However, this meant that Meng Ting’s recovery period would inevitably be prolonged.
“How about… I give it a try?”
Meng Ting was well aware that his injury had deeply shaken Yan Sui. He could soothe Yan Sui to sleep, but it didn’t necessarily mean he could ease all the sadness and worry. He wanted to recover quickly so that Yan Sui wouldn’t have to keep worrying about him.
As soon as he spoke, everyone looked at him. Meng Ting lowered his gaze and repeated, “I’ll give it a try… I have to try. I want to live a long life with you.”
Everyone gets sick eventually. Even if he didn’t get sick now, he would surely fall ill when he was older. If he wanted to live, he had to take medicine. He couldn’t bear to leave Yan Sui alone; he wanted to live alongside him.
“Alright,” Yan Sui agreed, his voice slightly choked, likely out of heartache for Meng Ting—a heartache he couldn’t control. Along with it came anger, anger toward those who had caused Meng Ting’s trauma.
The oral medication was already prepared in the medical kit Gu Li had brought. He opened it, Zhen Han handed it over, and Yan Sui went to pour some water.
Yan Sui took the medicine and then sat back down on the edge of the bed. He was still hesitant; the more he learned about Meng Ting’s past, the more he understood what a nightmare it was for Meng Ting.
Meng Ting reached out and noticed Yan Sui’s hand had stopped moving. He took the initiative to pick up the pills, placing them one by one in his palm, then popped them into his mouth. He grabbed the water, took a big gulp, and swallowed them all.
It’s not difficult, it’s not difficult, not difficult at all… Meng Ting kept telling himself, but his complexion still paled.
His chest and stomach heaved slightly, and his body began to tremble uncontrollably. Yan Sui hugged him tightly, and only then did Meng Ting realize his own discomfort.
“It’s okay, Yan Sui, I’m okay.”
Yan Sui didn’t respond, but he held Meng Ting even tighter. He pulled the blanket over Meng Ting, as if afraid that his warmth was not enough for Meng Ting. His hand gently stroked Meng Ting’s back. He wanted to say a few comforting words, but found his throat too choked up with emotion, and he couldn’t say a single word.
Gu Li and Zhen Han were facing this situation for the first time. One was a surgeon, the other a veterinarian, so neither of them had any experience dealing with this kind of psychological issues. They stood by for a while, and in the end, they quietly gathered their things and left.
Meng Ting didn’t need them. He had Yan Sui by his side, and that was enough. As Meng Ting himself had said, this was an obstacle he had to overcome.
Meng Ting leaned against Yan Sui, his face growing increasingly pale, but when Yan Sui tried to let him go to call Zhen Han Gu Li back, Meng Ting stopped him. “Yan Sui… believe me, I can do this.”
“Yan Sui… believe in me,” Meng Ting tried his best to control his voice, but they still carried a slight tremor.
“Alright, I believe in you,” Yan Sui’s hand on Meng Ting’s back clenched into a fist, and the fierce look in his eyes was almost frightening.
Meng Ting couldn’t spare any attention to Yan Sui’s state. He was enduring the churning in his stomach, the involuntary trembling of his body, even his teeth were chattering. Cold sweat drenched him, and he looked utterly disheveled.
But after reaching his limit, he gradually began to calm down. He was completely drained, but there was a hint of relief.
“Yan Sui, I did it.”
Though it wasn’t perfect, and he was still a mess, he hadn’t vomited, and the overwhelming urge to keep eating hadn’t returned.
“Yes, you did it,” Yan Sui replied.
But then Meng Ting’s body stiffened again. He felt a sudden warmth on the side of his neck—was that… Yan Sui’s tears? Why was his Yan Sui crying? Was it because of him? It must be.
Meng Ting opened his mouth to speak but didn’t dare to ask. Instead, his hands, now regaining strength, wrapped around Yan Sui’s waist again, continuing to hold him close. But he was probably too tired just now, and Yan Sui’s embrace was so familiar to him that after holding him for a while, his eyelids gradually grew heavy.
After composing himself, Yan Sui noticed that Meng Ting had fallen asleep leaning against him. He gently laid Meng Ting back on the bed, then went to fetch some warm water. Carefully, he removed Meng Ting’s clothes and wiped his body with the warm water.
Yan Sui stroked Meng Ting’s cheek, knowing that Meng Ting wouldn’t wake up again for a while. He walked out of the room, and Nanny Wang, who had been waiting at the top of the stairs, nodded to him before entering the room to continue watching over Meng Ting.
Yan Sui went downstairs, where everyone was gathered in the living room. The TV was on, but no one was really in the mood to watch it.
Usually, everyone got along well, but it was mostly Meng Ting who kept the peace. Even if he was just sitting on the couch, leaning against Yan Sui and sleeping, his presence made everyone feel at ease, and even the most boring TV shows became enjoyable.
“Where are you going?” Yan Yu called out to Yan Sui, then turned his head and nodded to He Yue before standing up to follow Yan Sui. “I’ll go with you.”
Yan Sui glanced back at Yan Yu, then nodded.
Zhen Han and Gu Li couldn’t leave. With two patients in the house, they had to stay.
Yan Yu and Yan Sui got into the car and remained silent for a long time. Yan Yu could understand Yan Sui’s feelings and roughly guessed what Yan Sui intended to do.
***
They arrived at an abandoned factory warehouse in the outskirts. Before they could get close, they heard He Wan’s terrified screams and angry curses.
“Who the hell are you people? Why did you trick me into coming here?”
He Wan had called Xiao Zi and waited by the roadside for a car to pick her up. In less than half an hour, a car arrived. She got in and was driven towards the outskirts. The further they went, the more uneasy she felt, but before she could do anything, she was tied up, and her phone was confiscated.
They didn’t gag her, and she cursed the entire way, but none of the three people in the car paid her any attention.
She had been kicked out of her house around ten in the morning, and now it was past eight in the evening. She hadn’t eaten a grain of rice or drunk a drop of water. The more she had cursed earlier, the more she suffered now. Her lips were chapped, and her voice was hoarse.
In this empty, abandoned warehouse, only the sound of mice squeaking reminded her that there were living creatures around, but this only made her more terrified. Her eyes were blindfolded, and she needed to keep shouting to bolster her courage.
“My son is the patriarch of the Yan family! If you dare touch a single hair on my head, he will make sure you die a horrible death!”
He Wan was still certain that Yan Sui would be ruthless towards her but would never allow anyone to harm her, especially in this manner.
Not because she was his mother, but because he had been taught too well by Xu Shuyin. His moral principles wouldn’t allow him to lay a hand on a woman.
She wasn’t entirely wrong in her thinking. The only thing she miscalculated was that Meng Ting was Yan Sui’s ultimate taboo, a line even she couldn’t cross. She had already crossed it once, so Yan Sui brought out the agreement from decades ago and took back everything the Yan family had given her.
Yet, she continued to target Meng Ting. She and Xiao Zi had caused Meng Ting harm, and Yan Sui’s last shred of patience with her was gone.
“Is that so? I said something like that? I didn’t even know…”
Yan Sui raised his hand, and two men walked in, removing the black cloth from He Wan’s eyes. The lights turned on, allowing her to clearly see that the person who had brought her here was none other than the son she had just mentioned.
He Wan’s heart rate suddenly accelerated. She squinted her eyes for a while to adapt to the brightness of the warehouse, but once she could see Yan Sui clearly, her heart grew colder and colder. “No, no, you won’t do anything to me… you crawled out of my belly!”
Yan Sui didn’t want to say much to He Wan. They had never had anything to say to each other. A long bench was placed, and Yan Sui sat down.
At this moment, Yan Yu walked in from outside, still exhaling smoke. He had gone out to smoke a cigarette earlier; otherwise, he couldn’t guarantee what he might do when facing He Wan.
It took Yan Yu only a dozen steps to walk from the warehouse entrance to Yan Sui’s side. When He Wan saw the person clearly, she began to struggle violently.
Seeing Yan Sui, she could still rely on her identity as his biological mother, but seeing Yan Yu, she was truly frightened.
“Ghost, ghost…”
Her eyes were fixed on Yan Yu, bulging as if they might pop out. She looked more like the ghost she was talking about.
