New ordinary disciples entering Five Spirits Mountain would live in each of the five sects for a month. After getting a general understanding of the five sects, they would make a preliminary choice, decide which sect to join, and move into that sect.
Afterwards, a year of coursework would be set up, with the elders or even the heads of each sect teaching the basic knowledge. After a year, they could make another choice.
During this period, the new disciples were all under the care of the person responsible for recruiting disciples that year, and the general basic coursework for the year was also mainly taught at that sect’s location.
As one could imagine, this meant that most disciples would end up joining that sect.
Legend had it that many years ago, there was an exceptionally talented individual who was suited for all five elements. However, that year, an elder from Qiankun Earth was in charge of recruiting disciples, so the basic coursework had to be done at Qiankun Earth. This talented senior couldn’t be bothered to travel back and forth and simply joined Qiankun Earth, breaking the hearts of the other four sects.
“Shuang’er, I’m worried,” Yan Chengquan said, looking at the disciple roster. “My Canglan Courtyard always gets few people. It’s finally our turn, we absolutely cannot let your Martial Uncle go out.”
2333: “…”
Then why let him go out to recruit disciples in the first place?
But Yan Chengquan quickly explained: “It’s all Canglan Courtyard’s fault. Most of our offensive techniques are ice attacks, transforming water into ice. Over time, everyone becomes like an ice cube. I use water attacks, but unfortunately, I’m the head and can’t leave Five Spirits Mountain to recruit disciples.”
“If I had known, I would have made your Martial Uncle the head back then.”
Wen Qianshu: “Then, Master’s meaning is?”
“Shuang’er, if you have time, go help your Martial Uncle. If he’s stubborn and punishes a disciple, you can soothe them for him, comfort them with a few soft words.” Yan Chengquan said with a straight face, “Let’s trick the disciples into joining first.”
Wen Qianshu: “…”
2333: “…”
Tricking them in first, is that really okay?
Wen Qianshu said, “Yes.”
Wen Qianshu bowed, took her leave, and pushed the door open to exit.
She asked a young disciple and learned that Yan Qingxi was arranging the living quarters, so she headed over. Canglan Courtyard was located at the bottom of the water, where the sky was invisible, only a vast azure ocean could be seen. Water flanked the corridors, with schools of fish swimming about and seaweed growing lushly.
Wen Qianshu: “It’s like an aquarium.”
After speaking, she saw a beautiful little fish on the left side of the corridor. It had widened its eyes and was wagging its tail while looking at her. It seemed to want to swim inside but was blocked by a barrier. No matter how it tried, it couldn’t get through, just bumping against it repeatedly.
Wen Qianshu found it interesting and took a step closer.
2333: “Host, you’re not here to play.”
Wen Qianshu: “Sigh, I know.”
Just then, a voice came from behind: “Senior Sister Yan.”
Wen Qianshu turned to look and saw Yun Cai standing behind her. She wasn’t wearing soft armor today, but she was in a neat and sharp outfit. Her fiery red clothes were cinched with a black belt, outlining her slender waist. She held a long spear in her hand and was waving. Her large eyes were smiling, and the crescent moons at the corners of her eyes were very pretty.
The Canglan Courtyard disciple who had brought her over bowed to Wen Qianshu. Wen Qianshu nodded, and he turned and left.
Wen Qianshu took a step closer to the edge of the corridor, quickly lowered her gaze to glance at the little fish, and thought to herself, Look, doesn’t this person look like one of your kind?
The little fish blew a bubble and swam in circles.
On the surface, however, Wen Qianshu remained expressionless and simply asked, “Why are you here?”
Yun Cai: “My dad told me to come thank you.”
She shook the long spear, and only then did Wen Qianshu notice a package hanging from it.
Yun Cai: “Some snacks from Yanyun Sky. I’ll just hang them here for you for now.”
Seeing Wen Qianshu’s eyes on the long spear, she smiled and said, “This? My dad originally said he’d forge a pair of daggers for me as a starter weapon, but I thought a spear looked better. Who knew it would be so heavy to carry.”
Wen Qianshu: “It is good-looking.”
Yun Cai smiled: “Right?”
She asked again, “Senior Sister, where are you heading?”
Wen Qianshu: “To see the new disciples.”
“Ah, let’s go together then,” Yun Cai said. “I want to have a look too.”
Wen Qianshu nodded.
Yun Cai: “Canglan Courtyard is so beautiful. I’ve never seen so many fish before.”
The way she said it, it was as if Canglan Courtyard was beautiful because of the fish.
Wen Qianshu inexplicably wanted to laugh, to tease her, to ask her, if that were the case, wouldn’t that catfish cave also be very beautiful?
2333: “Host, your character setting!”
Wen Qianshu: “Oh.”
Yun Cai looked around and immediately spotted the little fish staring at them. She moved closer and gestured with her finger, and the little fish followed her finger, swimming up and down. Yun Cai found it interesting and moved even closer, wanting to poke it, but her fingertip met an obstacle and couldn’t go any further.
Yun Cai: “Ah? What’s going on?”
But she quickly realized: “A barrier?”
Wen Qianshu: “Yes.”
Canglan Courtyard is protected by a barrier that blocks the surrounding seawater. Non-disciples of Canglan Courtyard cannot touch anything outside the barrier unless they break it.
Yun Cai: “Then there’s no way.”
Wen Qianshu clapped her hands. The faint light of Endless Moon flared brightly, spiraling upwards and merging into the water outside. It enveloped the small fish, brought it inside, and floated it before Yun Cai’s eyes.
Yun Cai was startled. She looked at Wen Qianshu, then lowered her eyes to the little fish. The fish was blowing bubbles and swimming around randomly inside Endless Moon.
Yun Cai extended a finger and touched Endless Moon. The little fish swam over and nuzzled her fingertip.
2333: “…”
Everyone in Canglan Courtyard can pass through that barrier, and the water control technique is the introductory magic art of Canglan Courtyard.
To bring a fish in, you need to use Endless Moon? And clap your hands?
Who are you showing off for?
“If Yan Qingxi saw this, you’d probably have to copy another one hundred and eighty thousand words.”
“One hundred and eighty thousand it is. One hundred and eighty thousand to learn a new incantation.”
Wen Qianshu said flippantly, “Besides, isn’t he not here?”
That fish was a fickle one. One second it was circling Wen Qianshu, the next it was endlessly nuzzling Yun Cai. Wen Qianshu had seen through this heartless fish, so she let it stay inside Endless Moon, following by Yun Cai’s side.
Wen Qianshu: “After I see my Martial Uncle, I’ll help you take this fish to Yanyun Sky.”
Yun Cai said in pleasant surprise, “Okay.”
She touched the little fish: “Come, let me give you a name—how about, we call you Moon?”
Wen Qianshu: “What?”
“Moon,” Yun Cai smiled. “It’s silver, just like the moon.”
“Don’t you think so, Moon?”
The little fish swam in a circle, nuzzling Yun Cai with all its might.
Yun Cai continued to tease the fish, saying, “By the way, speaking of the moon, I’ll invite you to see the sunset at Yanyun Sky another day. The vast expanse of rosy clouds looks like it’s on fire.”
Wen Qianshu stared at her, almost unblinkingly, and didn’t speak for a long time. Her daze was so obvious that her gaze seemed to fixate.
For a moment, 2333 thought she had discovered something, but Wen Qianshu suddenly withdrew her gaze and just said, “Mm, okay.”
With that, she took a step and started walking forward.
Endless Moon moved with her, carrying the little fish, and Yun Cai followed behind.
2333 asked uneasily, “Host?”
Wen Qianshu: “Hm? What’s wrong?”
2333: “You don’t have anything you want to ask?”
Wen Qianshu’s voice held a hint of a smile: “What could I possibly want to ask?”
2333 suddenly felt a chill. It knew that Wen Qianshu was the type of person who loved to speak with seven parts truth and three parts falsehood, always able to lead people astray. But at this moment, her three parts had suddenly become the “three parts” from “there are only three parts of moonlight in the world”【1】, so blatantly and thoroughly false that 2333 couldn’t figure out if she truly didn’t care, or if she knew more.
They passed through the long corridor and another courtyard, finally arriving at the courtyard where the new disciples lived.
The disciple guarding the gate naturally recognized Yan Chengshuang and bowed to her. Wen Qianshu acknowledged it and entered with Yun Cai, where she saw many people who had just changed into disciple uniforms. There were four or five-year-old boys and girls, as well as teenagers in their early teens. They were standing, sitting, or squatting, gathered in the courtyard.
A Canglan Courtyard disciple was holding a roster, calling out names one by one to assign rooms. The new disciples whose names were called would step forward, and another disciple would give them their keys.
Yan Qingxi stood with his hands behind his back, right next to these two disciples.
Wen Qianshu walked forward: “Martial Uncle.”
Yan Qingxi nodded and glanced at her, but his gaze drifted past Yun Cai and landed directly on Endless Moon.
The little fish inside Endless Moon swam around and cheerfully blew a bubble at him.
2333: “…”
Wen Qianshu: “…”
2333: “What was someone just saying? That Martial Uncle wasn’t here?”
Wen Qianshu: “It’s not my fault. I was just in a daze and forgot about it.”
2333: “Go tell that to your Martial Uncle.”
Martial Uncle said expressionlessly: “The Guishui Art.”
Wen Qianshu almost cried out: “2333, the Guishui Art has thirty words.”
2333: “No cheating.”
Author’s Notes:
Note [1]: The “three parts” in “giving her three parts” is not the “three parts” from “three parts flowing water, seven parts dust,” but the “three parts” from “there are only three parts of moonlight in the world”—from Fortress Besieged. I just love the way Qian Zhongshu writes, so I’m adapting it~ I usually mark any adaptations or quotes, so if you notice I’ve missed any, please remind me~~
