Wealthy Woof Chapter 15

The Conversation Between Dogs

Zuo Ning had a toy cart, resembling a small flatbed pushcart, which was a gift from Mother Lu. When Zuo Ning was first brought home and raised, Mother Lu enjoyed placing him in the cart and pushing him around. Perhaps because of this, she later had an electric toy car custom-made for him.

Now that Zuo Ning lived with Lu Chenghe, the old pushcart had also been brought over by the servants from Mother Lu’s place. However, it had long been buried under a mountain of toys and hadn’t been seen for quite some time.

Across from Lu Chenghe’s bed was a large window. Next to the wall beside it was Zuo Ning’s dog bed. Right next to the bed was a towering pile of toys—half of them bought by Mother Lu and the other half by Lu Chenghe. At this moment, Zuo Ning was sticking his little rear up in the air, digging through the pile toy by toy, attempting to unearth the long-lost pushcart buried underneath.

Lu Chenghe, who had just finished his bath and was now lounging in bed reading, watched as the little one, bursting with nighttime energy, buried himself entirely in the toy pile. Who knew what had provoked the pup, making him determined to dig through the heap with his paws, sending toys scattering across the floor. In just a short while, the area at the foot of the bed was already littered with them.

“Little Pudding.”

Hearing the call, Zuo Ning turned around to look at Lu Chenghe. “Awoo?”

Lu Chenghe glanced at the mess and said expressionlessly, “What are you doing?”

Zuo Ning quickly explained, “Awoo awoo awoo!” I’m looking for the pushcart to deliver toys to those two adorable retired military dogs!

But Lu Chenghe, who didn’t understand dog language, could only see the little pup earnestly responding to him, which made him unable to hold back a smile. He leaned back, picked up his book again, and said, “Carry on.”

As soon as he said that, the little pup, who had turned around to look at him, immediately resumed his struggle against the toy mountain. The entire exchange felt like a smooth and natural conversation—question and answer, perfectly in sync—except Lu Chenghe hadn’t understood a word.

He continued reading while keeping an eye on Little Pudding. After quite some time, the pup had completely dismantled the neatly arranged toy pile the maids had tidied up, finally managing to claw out a bright yellow pushcart.

The cart wasn’t exactly small; it could easily fit a seven- or eight-year-old child. As soon as Little Pudding dragged it out, he climbed onto the cart, stood on the board, then extended one hind leg and gave a strong push against the floor. The pushcart slid forward with the momentum.

It was as if he had discovered a brand-new skill. Lu Chenghe watched as the pup zoomed around the room, riding the cart back and forth.

Amused, Lu Chenghe grabbed Little Pudding’s personal phone from the bedside table, captured the whole scene, and posted it on Weibo with the caption: A dog who’s achieved enlightenment.

After testing the cart’s mobility and confirming that all four wheels worked perfectly, Zuo Ning pushed it to the side, planning to use it to transport toys tomorrow. Feeling proud of himself, he cheerfully trotted over to the bed, placed his two paws on the edge, and looked at Lu Chenghe. “Woof!” Let me sleep on the bed!

Lu Chenghe extended a single finger, pressed it against Little Pudding’s forehead, and gave a slight push. “Go to sleep.”

Rejected, Zuo Ning refused to give up. He tried again, this time resting his head pitifully on the edge of the bed, gazing at Lu Chenghe with big, pleading eyes. “Awoo~”

Lu Chenghe set his book down, sat up, and looked at him seriously. “Do you know you did something wrong?”

Zuo Ning was completely confused, his eyes filled with question marks.

Lu Chenghe pointed at the mess on the floor. “Did you do this?”

Zuo Ning followed his gaze. Oh wow, toys were scattered all over the place in a complete mess. Was that really his doing?

Lu Chenghe reached out and gave him a gentle push. “Clean up the toys, and I’ll let you sleep on the bed tonight.”

Zuo Ning understood the words, but there was no way he could comply. If he tidied up as Lu Chenghe asked, he’d probably be taken to a lab for live observation tomorrow. So, he continued looking at Lu Chenghe with pitiful eyes, hoping to get away with just acting cute.

Seeing that Lu Chenghe wasn’t buying it at all, Zuo Ning thought for a moment, then placed his paw on Lu Chenghe’s arm, stroking it back and forth. “Wooo…” A warm bed and an adorable pup—are you sure you don’t want one?

Lu Chenghe grabbed the mischievous paw, glanced down at Little Pudding’s big, pleading eyes, and helplessly pinched his chubby little face before finally picking him up and placing him on the bed. “You were such a good puppy when you were little. The older you get, the naughtier you become. So Samoyeds being obedient is just a myth, huh?”

Completely ignoring the accusation, Zuo Ning found a comfortable spot on the bed, sprawled out next to Lu Chenghe, and rested his head on his chest. Listening to the steady heartbeat, he squinted his eyes and let out a big yawn, already drifting off to sleep. As for Lu Chenghe’s complaints—sorry, didn’t hear a thing.

Lu Chenghe absentmindedly rubbed Little Pudding’s ears as he continued reading. The room grew completely quiet, with only the soft rustling of pages turning. Before long, the little one, who had been full of energy just moments ago, was now softly snoring. Lu Chenghe glanced down, saw him sleeping soundly, and put his book aside. He turned off the lights, leaving only a dim bedside lamp.

Through the window, the garden lights were still visible. The coolness of early autumn had begun to creep in. Slowly lying down, Lu Chenghe wrapped an arm around the little creature who insisted on sleeping in his arms. In the peaceful silence, the warmth of the pup chased away the chill. Having grown used to sleeping with a dog beside him, Lu Chenghe soon drifted off as well.

The pleasant breakfast ended with Little Pudding successfully stealing a piece of toast from Lu Chenghe’s mouth. Lu Chenghe poked its now round belly and sipped his coffee while watching it eat with great enthusiasm. This dog changed a little every day—yesterday he was still tiny, and today he already seemed so much bigger. Not long ago, it didn’t even dare go down the stairs, but now it was running up and down with ease.

After Zuo Ning finished eating, Lu Chenghe ruffled his head before heading out for work.

The moment Lu Chenghe left, Zuo Ning hurriedly ran upstairs to his room. His legs were already growing longer, and he climbed the stairs with ease. However, when he tried to push the little cart to the edge of the stairs, he ran into a problem—there was no way he could carry it down. If he just pushed it, it might fall apart if it wasn’t sturdy enough.

While he was struggling to figure out a solution, he spotted a maid carrying a pile of freshly washed bedding. Without hesitation, he grabbed onto the hem of her skirt with his paw. “Woof woof!” Help me carry this down!

The butler had strictly forbidden the maids from playing with the young master’s pet. While Samoyeds weren’t particularly rare or expensive, the young master’s dog was different—his value was immeasurable. If anything happened because of their teasing, they simply couldn’t afford the consequences.

However, since the little one had approached her on his own, the maid couldn’t help but reach out and pat his fluffy head. “What’s wrong, little guy? Can’t go down? Do you want me to carry you?”

Zuo Ning patted the small cart beside him. “Awoo!”

Maybe his intentions were just too obvious because the maid actually seemed to understand. She hesitated, then picked up the small cart and carried it downstairs. Seeing Little Pudding trotting behind her, she was a little stunned. Had pets evolved to be this smart now?

As soon as they reached the first floor, the moment Zuo Ning saw his task was completed, he grabbed the cart and ran off without even looking back.

The maid, now “discarded after use”, could only laugh helplessly.

Zuo Ning tugged the rope tied to the handle of the little cart as he trotted toward the kennel in the hall, then began tossing one toy after another into the cart. However, only the toys bought by Mother Lu made it into the cart. Though he didn’t play much with the toys bought by Lu Chenghe, he couldn’t bring himself to part with them.

When the cart was finally full, Zuo Ning strapped the rope around himself and began pulling the cart toward the door.

The butler, passing by at the right moment, couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you running away from home, Little Pudding?”

Without turning his head, Zuo Ning called back, “Woof!” I’m going to make some friends!

Seeing Zuo Ning happily pulling the cart full of toys, the butler chuckled and went about his duties. In the past, someone might have needed to keep an eye on him, but now, aside from a few rooms with closed doors, even the young master’s bedroom was left open for him to come and go as he pleased. After all, the whole perimeter of the estate was fenced in, so even if he tried to run, he wouldn’t get far, and they didn’t have to worry about him getting lost.

Zuo Ning pulled the cart down the slides by the front gate stairs, then struggled over the cobblestone path. Once past it, he made his way smoothly to the entrance of the house near the large iron gate.

The Lu estate had 24-hour security patrols. Since Lu Chenghe had taken in the two retired military dogs, he intended for them to guard the house. Therefore, he had arranged for them to stay in the security room by the entrance. Though the kennel wasn’t as luxurious as the one Mother Lu had specially customized for Zuo Ning, it was still very comfortable.

Even before Zuo Ning reached the gate, the two retired military dogs heard the sound of the cart rattling over the cobblestones. They came running out and stood at the entrance, watching.

As soon as Zuo Ning arrived at the entrance, he saw the two “gatekeepers” and hurriedly said, “Woof woof woof!” Brothers, I brought you some toys!

The more enthusiastic German Shepherd crouched down and barked, “Woof!” Toys are something little pups like you enjoy. We’ve outgrown toys.

Zuo Ning picked up a plush toy and moved closer to the door. This was his first time coming to the gatehouse. Inside, there was a man in uniform sitting in front of a bank of surveillance monitors. When he saw Zuo Ning holding the toy in his mouth, he grinned. “So, this is the famous Little Pudding? Didn’t expect you two to charm the young master’s pet right away. Impressive!”

The man was the head of the security team. Zuo Ning had seen him from a distance before when he accompanied Lu Chenghe on morning runs, but this was their first direct interaction. Zuo Ning wasn’t shy, though. He simply bypassed the man, placing the toy in the large kennel. “Woof woof!” I brought it for you! It’s all yours!

The more enthusiastic German Shepherd came over, sniffed the toy, and then pawed at it. “Hoo…” How do we play with this?

Zuo Ning tilted his head, thinking for a moment. “Awooo~” Just use it as a pillow, scratch it with your paws, chew on it with your teeth—do whatever you like.

The German Shepherd seemed a little embarrassed, but since they hadn’t played with toys since they were pups, the temptation was hard to resist. It awkwardly pawed at the toy. “Woof.” Well, thank you.

Zuo Ning happily stuck his tongue out. “Woof woof.” No problem. We’re friends, after all!

The security captain, noticing that Zuo Ning and the German Shepherd seemed to be having a conversation, called to the other dog lying at the door. “Fu Na, come over and get to know the new friend.”

Zuo Ning turned his head in surprise, looking at the captain, and then at the other German Shepherd. It turned out to be a female dog—no wonder she seemed so aloof. Realizing he didn’t know her name yet, he asked, “Woof?” I’m Zuo Ning, what’s your name?

Lang Ya glanced at him and said, “Woof!” I know you’re called Little Pudding. They’ve called you that so many times, I remember. My name is Lang Ya.

Zuo Ning noticed the mention of syllables and couldn’t help but ask, “Awooo?” Can you understand human speech?

Lang Ya looked at Zuo Ning, puzzled. “Awo?” Human language is so complicated, how could we possibly understand it? But if we hear the same sounds enough times, we can remember the syllables. Once we’ve memorized them, we just follow their instructions. You’re still young now, but when you grow up, you’ll understand.

Zuo Ning didn’t quite understand how Lang Ya could interpret such a long explanation from simple sounds, but now he knew—dogs couldn’t understand human language. He had thought so all along. If they could understand, wouldn’t every dog be a genius?

I read before that although dogs can only understand a few hundred human words (I think there was a border collie that was on the record books for recognizing the most) they have the advantage of a better nose. They can smell really well, to the point where they can use dogs to identify cancer patients. Because they can actually smell the cancer… I think it was lung cancer. They can also smell a human who has bad intentions… Which is why keeping a dog at home is useful. Well, I read that quite a while ago and I don’t recall all the details.
