The alphas and omegas who had been sold off by Chairman Jung were scattered across the country. Regardless of where they lived or what they did, their hatred was directed solely at the chairman himself.

His blood relatives were a different matter. After all, they were handed over to Chairman Jung because of their own blood relatives.

Nam Soohyun was no exception. Twenty years ago, Chairman Jung had been one of Korea’s most infamous loan sharks—and the only one who accepted humans as collateral. He didn’t care about age, appearance, or gender. The only thing that mattered was their presentation: alpha or omega.

It was a chaotic era in Korea’s history. Unlike now, laws were loose, and human rights for alphas and omegas were practically nonexistent. Nam Soohyun had been sold to Chairman Jung to pay off her parents’ gambling debts. Under his care, she was raised like a fighting dog and sold off again a few years later. Director Yeon had suffered a similar fate.

Still, Nam Soohyun considered herself lucky. She had survived into her late 30s and amassed a considerable fortune. It was that money that allowed her to steal Jung Heeyeon away.

“You really are…”

Nam Soohyun sighed, staring at him. She had orchestrated the entire scheme of snatching Jung Heeyeon from the chairman. By digging up information on Lee Yootae, one of the chairman’s trusted aides, dragging him into a gambling den, and leveraging his debt, she had managed to carry the plan up to this point.

“Is Director Yeon treating you well?”

She picked up a piece of soy-braised beef and placed it on the porridge, her tone casual. Jung Heeyeon glanced between the meat and Nam Soohyun before nodding.

“Yes. Everyone else is kind to me too.”

“Really?”

Nam Soohyun rested her chin on her hand, thinking. Rumors about Director Yeon had already begun to spread, in just one night. People were gossiping about how he’d taken an omega to dine at a high-end restaurant on Christmas Day—no less a prestigious place like Adelaide. And with a dominant omega at that. He was practically begging for scandal.

It didn’t take much for her to realize that Director Yeon was intentionally using Jung Heeyeon’s presence to his advantage.

“Do you know that Director Yeon is using you?”

Nam Soohyun asked with a sly grin. The omega, who had just swallowed his porridge with the braised beef she had given him, quietly nodded.

“Yes.”

“…You know?”

“Yes. He told me from the start…”

His innocent expression caught Nam Soohyun off guard.

“He said he’s doing this to destroy your grandfather. Are you okay with that?”

“My grandfather? …Oh, you mean the chairman. The chairman told me that once I’m outside, we’re strangers.”

Jung Heeyeon continued speaking in his harmless tone.

“He said that omegas are meant to follow alphas… So, when I leave the house, I have no more relations with him.”

Nam Soohyun’s face, initially twisted in confusion, gradually softened into amusement.

“Haha!”

She burst out laughing, loud and boisterous, tears forming in the corners of her eyes from the sheer hilarity.

“Chairman Jung completely shot himself in the foot, didn’t he? Trying to use his grandson for scraps of influence, only to have it blow up in his face!”

Even as Nam Soohyun openly ridiculed the chairman, Jung Heeyeon remained unfazed, quietly eating his porridge. Despite his big efforts, the porridge didn’t seem to diminish at all.

“You’re so cute.”

Nam Soohyun’s sudden comment caught him off guard. He set his spoon down, feeling full, and glanced at her as he sipped his water. He couldn’t understand why she was calling him cute all of a sudden.

“Do you want to live with me?”

She asked, tilting her head slightly. The question, which sounded almost like a joke, was taken seriously by Jung Heeyeon.

“But I’m going to live with the director…”

“Hmm. Do you like Director Yeon?”

“Yes, I like the Director.”

His gentle answer made Nam Soohyun’s eyes narrow. It wasn’t the kind of chemical attraction that typically occurred between an alpha and omega. If it were, there was no way this house would be so impeccably clean. The house, where she now sat, looked no different from how it had been before Jung Heeyeon arrived. Simply put, it was a home devoid of any trace of alpha pheromones.

It was practically instinct for an alpha to mark their possessions with their pheromones. No matter how meticulously Director Yeon managed his pheromones, he was still an alpha by nature. As such, there was no overcoming the possessiveness ingrained in his instincts.

It was just that, until now, there had been no one to direct that possessiveness toward. Naturally, he would have felt no need to give a pheromone shower either.

Nam Soohyun recalled Director Yeon’s cold expression and the way he had said, “It’s just no fun anymore.” It was a sentiment she couldn’t understand. Unlike when he was raised as a fighting dog, he now had more than enough wealth and power to act as he pleased. What could possibly be so uninteresting?

In some ways, she felt pity for his inability to find joy in life. Having grown up in the same cage, she couldn’t help but feel a subtle sense of kinship with hutch.

Nam Soohyun wondered if Jung Heeyeon could become Director Yeon’s source of joy as she opened her mouth to speak.

“By the way, you should learn to control your pheromones. It was fine earlier, but now it’s starting to leak a bit.”

“Doctor Kim Jiwon mentioned that to me, too…”

“Kim Jiwon did? Then Director Yeon probably knows by now. Well, it’s fine since Haejin is around.”

Though the name was unfamiliar, Jung Heeyeon realized that the omega Kim Jiwon had mentioned was likely this Haejin person, someone who Director Yeon seemed to know well.

“Who is that person?”

“Haejin?”

“Yes.”

At this, Nam Soohyun’s lips curved into a mischievous smile.

“Are you curious about who he is?”

“Yes.”

“He’s the one who brought me information about you.”

Jung Heeyeon fidgeted with his fingers. His curiosity deepened as he thought about that person’s relationship with Director Yeon.

“Is this person… close to Director Yeon?”

“Haejin?”

“Yes.”

“Director Yeon and—”

Before she could finish her sentence, the sound of the door lock disengaging echoed through the room. Jung Heeyeon instinctively dashed toward the door, cutting her off mid-sentence. He knew interrupting someone was impolite, but his excitement at seeing Director Yeon overpowered his manners.

“Director…?”

However, Jung Heeyeon froze in surprise. Director Yeon’s expression was harsher than usual. With a scowl plasteree on his face, Director Yeon strode in, pulling the omega into his arms. Caught in the alpha’s firm embrace, Jung Heeyeon tilted his head back to look up at his face. It was a rare, ferocious expression.

“It’s been a while, Director Yeon. Why don’t you relax a little?”

“Chief Nam, I think you’ve crossed the line.”

“Line?”

“What alpha in their right mind would be okay with another alpha intruding on their territory?”

Nam Soohyun’s gaze shifted to the omega nestled in Director Yeon’s arms. Taken aback by his far more menacing demeanor than she had anticipated, she let out a dry laugh in disbelief.

“Director Yeon, you’re so funny. Are you seriously acting like this because of Jung Heeyeon?”

It was only then that Jung Heeyeon realized Director Yeon’s aggression stemmed from himself.

“Oh, Director, I’m sorry. I opened the door for her.”

He lightly tugged on Director Yeon’s black coat. That small gesture was enough to soften the sharpness in the alpha’s eyes.

“Heeyeon, you shouldn’t open the door for just anyone. You should only do that for me.”

“I thought it was Doctor Kim Jiwon. I’m sorry.”

“Really? You thought so?”

Still holding Jung Heeyeon close, Director Yeon walked further into the room, ignoring Nam Soohyun’s muttered protests entirely. His cold eyes caught sight of the porridge bowl Jung Heeyeon had been eating from.

“Have you finished eating?”

“Yes.”

“Here’s your medicine.”

While Jung Heeyeon swallowed his medication, Director Yeon ran a hand irritably through his hair, trying to steady his breathing.

“What do you expect me to think when you’re here with an omega who can’t even control his pheromones, Chief Nam?”

“Do you think I’d be crazy enough to mess with him? And you’re being ridiculous. Do you honestly believe I’d fall for pheromones like that? I’m not some rutting alpha, you know.”

As Jung Heeyeon quietly finished his water, he poured another glass and handed it to Nam Soohyun. She accepted it, visibly calming down after a few sips.

“Come here.”

Director Yeon said abruptly, pulling Jung Heeyeon by the waist with an almost impatient motion.

“You need to work on that temper of yours.”

Noticing the tension, Jung Heeyeon hesitated, glancing at Director Yeon. The alpha, catching his apprehension, softened his tone and asked gently.

“Did you take all your medicine?”

“Yes.”

“Then it’s time for you to rest.”

Without further ado, Director Yeon carried the omega toward his bedroom, sparing Nam Soohyun a brief nod.

“We’ll talk later.”

“Let’s talk now—”

Nam Soohyun opened her mouth to respond, but Director Yeon cut her off effortlessly.

“Consider it time to come up with a better excuse, Chief Nam.”

Director Yeon lingered near, staying until Jung Heeyeon finished brushing his teeth and settled into bed.

From the moment he had walked through the door, the faint traces of another alpha’s pheromones had irritated him. He’d immediately noticed the unfamiliar shoes by the entrance, too. Though he had quickly deduced that they belonged to Nam Soohyun, an alpha he was familiar with, it didn’t make the intrusion any less discomforting.
