DASB Ch36

When Ye Xi woke again, it was nearly noon. Gu Qing and Wen Yu were sitting on the sofa nearby, each holding a baby and feeding them milk. The little ones leaned in their uncles’ arms, gulping their bottles with chubby cheeks moving rhythmically. Their tiny hands opened and closed, big round eyes darting around curiously, mouths never stopping, so adorably focused that Ye Xi’s heart melted.

Seeing Ye Xi awake, Gu Qing carried the baby over to him and showed the little one’s drinking expression. “Look, he’s so well-behaved.”

“He’s only well-behaved while drinking. When he cries, he sounds like a little trumpet,” Ye Xi said softly, eyes filled with warmth as he looked at the giggling baby.

Gu Qing laughed. “Well, that’s just how babies are.”

Ye Xi looked at Gu Qing and Wen Yu sitting on the sofa, a wave of warmth filling his chest. He had already heard from Huo Rulan how much they’d visited during his coma. Genuinely, Ye Xi said, “Thank you, Gu Qing-Ge. Thank you, Xiao Yu.”

“This? It’s nothing, no need to thank us,” Gu Qing replied, wiping the baby’s mouth with a wipe, then gently patting his back to burp him.

“I agree with Gu Qing-Ge. Brother Xiao Xi, no need to thank us,” Wen Yu added as he sat down beside Gu Qing, also burping a baby.

He glanced at Gu Qing’s baby and laughed. “Look at that expression! So cute. He must be wondering why he gets ‘hit’ every time he finishes drinking milk.”

Gu Qing turned to look. The baby’s big eyes were filled with dazed confusion.

He and Ye Xi exchanged glances and broke into laughter, with Wen Yu joining in.

The two one-month-old babies, full and satisfied, soon fell asleep. Their little chests rose and fell, mouths occasionally twitching.

Ye Xi couldn’t help but reach out and gently stroke their chubby cheeks, his eyes curving into soft crescents.

Gu Qing and Wen Yu chatted with Ye Xi for a while, then around lunchtime they went to the rest area to fetch Mu Chengyang and Lu Chuanning and head home.

After they left, Ye Xi couldn’t stay lying in bed. He slowly got up and walked toward the door, planning to check on Huo Rulan in the next room.

Just as he reached the doorway, Huo Rulan was already wheeling himself toward him.

Ye Xi hurried to walk behind him, wanting to push the wheelchair, but as he passed, Huo Rulan caught his hand. “It’s okay. I can push myself.”

He led Ye Xi to look at the sleeping babies and asked, “Let’s have them take your surname Ye, okay?”

Ye Xi shook his head. “I don’t want them to carry the Ye surname. Let them have yours.”

Huo Rulan’s hand paused as if something dawned on him. Then he nodded, “Alright. Then they’ll be Huo.”

Ye Xi embraced him and kissed his forehead. “The older one will be Huo Chen’an, the younger one Huo Jingxing.”

Heaven brought me to life, and I, Chen’an, live on.

Stars adorned with light, joy tied with clouds, Jingxing.

These were the names they had agreed on before. All they wished for was that their children would grow up safe and happy.

Ye Xi glanced at the twins and quietly leaned closer to Huo Rulan’s ear. “Honestly… I can’t tell which one is which.”

Huo Rulan laughed. He didn’t blame him, after all, the twins looked identical and wore matching outfits.

He pointed at the baby sleeping on the right. “Remember during the prenatal checkup, one was a bit chubbier? Look closely.”

Ye Xi did, then whispered, “Yeah… this one seems slightly bigger, with a bit more baby fat.”

Huo Rulan nodded with a smile. “The slightly smaller one is the elder, Chen’an. The chubbier one is the younger, Jingxing- ”

“WAAHH!!”

Little Jingxing, who had just been called “chubby,” suddenly burst into tears. Startled, Huo Rulan rushed to pick him up. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Daddy didn’t mean it. Our Jingxing isn’t chubby, he’s just adorable!”

The little trumpet’s crying slowly faded. Nestled in Huo Rulan’s arms, he dozed off again, his long lashes clumped together with tears, a tiny teardrop still clinging at the tip.

Huo Rulan couldn’t help but feel both amused and heartache. This little guy really ruled him.

He gently laid the baby back in the crib and tucked in the blanket.

Looking between the peacefully sleeping Chen’an, who was smacking his lips, and the still-pouting Jingxing, Huo Rulan hugged Ye Xi and kissed his cheek. “They’re really just like you, one likes sleeping, one likes crying. Both cute like you.”

He then kissed the corner of Ye Xi’s lips. “I love you.”

Face flushing, Ye Xi pulled back a bit and shyly returned the kiss. “I love you too.”

After lunch, Huo Rulan moved his things from the rest area so he could stay in the same room with Ye Xi. “I’ll sleep on the other bed. I used to stay in the other room because Mom and Dad were worried about me.”

Seeing his white hair again, Ye Xi’s eyes reddened. He had asked Wen Yu and Gu Qing many times before they finally told him the truth.

Choking up, he recalled Wen Yu’s words: “Senior woke up half a month earlier than you. He tried so hard to wheel himself over to see you, we had to hold him back. When the doctors handed Uncle Huo the critical condition notice, he saw it…”

Ye Xi hugged Huo Rulan tightly, kissing his white hair as tears streamed down his cheeks. Wen Yu’s voice still echoed in his ears:

“We saw it with our own eyes, his hair turned white at a visible rate. He slid from his wheelchair and knelt, begging the doctors through sobs to save you…”

Huo Rulan gently held Ye Xi and stroked his hair. “White hair isn’t so bad, at least now I don’t have to dye it.”

Ye Xi wouldn’t listen. He cried in his arms. “I’m sorry, Huo Rulan…”

Huo Rulan wiped his tears with tissues, smiling softly. “I should be the one thanking you, for giving me a family.”

Ye Xi looked at him through teary eyes. “You remember everything?”

“Mhm. I was born into this world through transmigration. I only recovered my memories of the past life two weeks ago.”

Ye Xi thought of how, in their past life, Huo Rulan’s body was reduced to ashes in a fiery car crash. The pain hit again, and he couldn’t stop his tears.

When Huo Rulan heard Ye Xi say his life ended at twenty, his own eyes reddened.

The regret was unbearable. He had thought that once he’d taken care of everything, he could finally go to Ye Xi and say: Long time no see.

“I didn’t even get to see you one last time,” Huo Rulan murmured.

Ye Xi clung to his clothes, sobbing too hard to speak.

Huo Rulan held him tighter. “It’s all in the past now…”

Ye Xi tearfully looked up and kissed him. “The future will be good…”

“It will be,” Huo Rulan replied, cupping his cheeks and kissing him back.

After another month of observation, Ye Xi recovered faster than Huo Rulan and could now move around freely, though doctors still recommended rest.

Thanks to the system’s healing medicine, Huo Rulan could now walk, but he wasn’t fully healed and still needed to recuperate.

The day of their discharge, the weather was beautiful.

Huo Rulan and Ye Xi carried their now-chubbier babies home. Born in the hospital and seeing the outside world for the first time, the babies kicked and waved, drooling and babbling in a language only they understood.

First thing they did at home was make formula. Huo Rulan sat on the couch holding both babies and feeding them expertly.

When he saw Ye Xi carrying luggage from the hospital, he turned to him. “Leave it for later, I’ll unpack.”

“It’s okay. Just a little bit,” Ye Xi replied and headed upstairs.

Rong Lan had asked someone to clean ahead of time, so the house was spotless. After putting everything in place, Ye Xi came back down and saw Huo Rulan cooing to the babies:

“Full now, huh? If you don’t nap after eating, you won’t grow tall!”

“Just look at you two, tiny gas tanks. I could eat you in one bite!”

Poor Chen’an and Jingxing didn’t realize their daddy was teasing. They grinned with their gummy mouths, drooling happily.

Ye Xi peeked from behind Huo Rulan and made a silly face at the babies.

Little Chen’an shyly rubbed his cheek with his hand. “Mmm~”

Little Jingxing kicked excitedly, fists in his mouth. “Ooooh~”

Huo Rulan reached back and pulled Ye Xi into his arms. “Look, two plump little gas tanks.”

“They look like cashews too,” Ye Xi laughed, holding his hand. “I could eat them in one bite.”

They played with the babies a while longer. Then Huo Rulan picked them up and laid them against his chest, gently patting them while softly humming a lullaby he’d sung countless times during prenatal care.

The babies drifted off, heads tilted and pudgy hands gripping his shirt.

Ye Xi’s gaze softened. He took a photo to add to their baby album.

Later, Huo Rulan carefully laid the twins in their crib. He guided Ye Xi to the bed, helped him take off his shoes. “You woke early, go rest a bit.”

Ye Xi held his hand, looking up. “Aren’t you going to sleep?”

Huo Rulan leaned down and kissed his forehead like coaxing a baby. “I’m not sleepy. You sleep.”

After Ye Xi fell asleep, he tucked the blanket in and kissed his forehead again.

He quietly covered the babies with their little quilts and tiptoed downstairs to make lunch.

Just as he reached the kitchen, Rong Lan walked in with a pot of nourishing soup and some ingredients.

Seeing no one in the living room, she asked, “Is Xiao Xi asleep? Did Chen’an and Jingxing drink milk? Why aren’t you upstairs resting? I said I’d cook!”

She carried things into the kitchen, and Huo Rulan followed. No matter how much she tried, she couldn’t shoo him away.

While washing vegetables, Huo Rulan replied, “Ye Xi’s asleep. Babies are fed. I’m not tired.”

Rong Lan chopped veggies skillfully, glanced at him, and scolded: “Not tired doesn’t mean don’t rest. You’re still recovering!”

Huo Rulan chuckled and nodded. “Got it. Thanks, Mom. And thank you, Dad too.”

“Hmph.” Rong Lan’s expression stiffened. She shot him a glare. “Don’t be so mushy. Wash those fast and go lie down.”

Huo Rulan laughed louder. “Okay, Mom!”

Sunlight poured through the window.

A mother and son cooked together in the kitchen, occasionally bickering with smiles.

Elsewhere in a tall building, a father worked at his desk, glancing now and then at a framed photo of their family of six, and grinning.

A gentle breeze fluttered the curtains upstairs. In the room, the one he loved was resting peacefully. And in the crib beside him, two babies with round tummies slept soundly.

A peaceful, warm home.

In this life, they finally had it all.
