FRGL chapter 60

"Don't Be Mad."

“Transferred?” Luo Hai’s frown deepened, and he immediately dismissed Xiao Tao’s statement. “Regardless of whether they’re being transferred, rules are rules. Shouldn’t everything be properly recorded for the new facility?”

Xiao Tao shrank back and dared not speak.

After a moment, Luo Hai asked, “Do you know where they’re being transferred to?”

Prison transfers weren’t unheard of, but they were very rare. Nantes had only one prison, so a transfer meant moving prisoners to another city—usually reserved for particularly difficult cases.

He had never heard of so many prisoners being transferred at once.

Xiao Tao shook his head vigorously, as if hesitating even for a second would anger Luo Hai. “All I know is that a transport will come for them tomorrow. We just follow orders from above.”

Luo Hai gave Xiao Tao a glance but didn’t press further. He simply continued sorting through the records.

Of course, Xiao Tao wouldn’t know. And the people in charge certainly wouldn’t tell an Omega anything.

Omegas were just servants, commodities, livestock kept by Alphas—only valuable until the moment they were slaughtered.

Luo Hai suppressed the surge of emotions in his chest and signed his name as the overseeing prosecutor on the last page of the records.

Finally, he handed the completed files and lists to Xiao Tao and instructed him to strictly follow them when handling the prisoners’ sentences and treatment.

“From now on, stop mistreating the prisoners here,” Luo Hai warned. “Clean the cell floors, lay down some soft bedding, separate food containers from other containers, and if a prisoner falls ill or gets injured, call a doctor. Understand?”

Xiao Tao nodded frantically in terror, though his blank expression told Luo Hai that he had no idea where to even find a doctor.

“Forget it,” Luo Hai sighed. He tore off a piece of paper, wrote down his personal number, and handed it to Xiao Tao. “If there’s any issue with the prisoners, call this number directly. Or go to the prosecution office and tell the guards you need Prosecutor Luo Hai. Got it?”

Xiao Tao took the note and this time nodded slowly.

Luo Hai wasn’t sure how much Xiao Tao actually understood or what was going through that frail Omega’s mind.

But it didn’t matter. He didn’t need to concern himself with the Omega prison or its inmates too much.

He knew Doyle well—this was just a temporary punishment. At most, he would be stuck here for a week before being reassigned to his original position, away from this grim, hellish place. He would never have to deal with these prisoners or guards again.

…But then what?

Would he return to handling the Lightwing case?

Would he have to hunt down the leader he had let escape with his own hands?

He didn’t know.

…..

By the time he left the prosecution office, the sun was already setting.

Aside from the piece of candy Eugene had given him, Luo Hai hadn’t eaten anything all day. But he had no appetite—he only felt drained from the day’s work and wanted nothing more than to collapse in his apartment and sleep.

His exhaustion dulled his usual vigilance. He focused only on hurrying home, failing to notice the figures lurking in the shadows, creeping closer with ill intent.

“That’s him, the prosecutor?”

Luo Hai barely had time to register the words before a brutal punch struck his jaw.

His body staggered backward uncontrollably, and only then did he feel the searing pain.

The sharp taste of blood flooded his mouth. As he lifted his gaze, four or five towering figures in ragged clothing had already surrounded him—Alphas.

“This is the prosecution office entrance,” Luo Hai barked. “Not your turf! Street violence is a serious crime. You—”

The Alphas let out a sneering laugh. The tallest one grabbed Luo Hai by the collar and landed a heavy kick to his stomach.

“Pathetic weakling! Couldn’t even catch a cowardly leader!”

“Useless as hell. Are you even an Alpha?”

The kick made Luo Hai’s vision go black for a moment, his stomach churning violently.

Rage ignited in him instantly. Reasoning with thugs like these was pointless—they only understood violence and submitted to it.

Luo Hai swung his elbow back with all his strength, slamming it into the person behind him.

He swore he had used every ounce of power he had, yet the blow barely did any damage. Instead, it only enraged the man. Easily restraining Luo Hai’s arm, the man twisted it downward, sending a searing pain through his body that nearly blacked out his vision again.

“Fancy moves but completely useless,” the man mocked. “No wonder you can’t even catch a bunch of Omegas. Beat him!”

With his body pinned, Luo Hai completely lost the ability to fight back. He could only kneel on the ground, enduring the relentless barrage of blows.

He clenched his teeth, refusing to make a sound, but his mind drifted elsewhere.

Was it because he hadn’t eaten the whole day?

Was his attack form incorrect?

…No. None of that mattered.

It was because he was an Omega.

No matter how much he masked himself with inhibitors and scent blockers, he could never change the stark physical difference between Omegas and Alphas.

No matter how hard he tried, in the face of raw, primitive strength, he was still nothing more than a powerless weakling.

“Let go.”

At that moment, he heard a voice—calm and steady, with no trace of emotion, yet loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.

The Alphas hesitated for just a second. Their leader chuckled, dismissing it entirely, and yanked Luo Hai up by the collar again.

But he didn’t get the chance to make his next move. The voice’s owner struck out with a sharp kick, landing squarely on the back of the Alpha’s head. The impact was so forceful that he had no time to react—his face smashed into the wall in front of him with a sickening crack as his nose broke.

The others froze, momentarily stunned. They didn’t know whether they should fight back or immediately drop to their knees and beg for mercy.

In those two seconds of hesitation, Eugene struck again. A swift kick sent one man flying, then he grabbed another by the hair and slammed his head into the person beside him.

He didn’t even consider the possibility of letting them go. He dealt with every single one of them, leaving them sprawled unconscious on the ground within three minutes.

From start to finish, Eugene didn’t say a single word. His cold gaze lingered on the fallen men until a voice called out from nearby.

“What’s going on?”

Patrolling nearby, Fanny rushed over. Seeing Luo Hai sitting on the ground and the thugs lying motionless, she was startled. “What happened?”

“Nothing,” Eugene said, his usual expression returning as he gave her a casual smile. “A few idiots thought they could cause trouble outside the prosecutor’s office. I just taught them a little lesson.”

Fanny immediately picked up her radio, calling in nearby officers. A group of well-trained, burly Alphas quickly arrived, subduing the unconscious and groaning thugs before cuffing them.

Only then did Fanny relax, turning to check on Luo Hai. “Are you okay?”

“They didn’t use weapons. He should be fine,” Eugene said as he crouched down in front of Luo Hai, extending a hand to help him up. “Can you stand?”

Luo Hai’s pupils contracted like a startled feline’s, then he abruptly slapped Eugene’s hand away, slowly pushing himself up on his own.

A wave of shame crashed over him.

It was humiliating enough to be beaten to the ground in front of the prosecutor’s office. But of all people, it had to be Eugene who saved him.

If it had been anyone else—Colin, Fanny, even Flock—he would have forced a smile and said thank you.

But it had to be Eugene.

“…Luo Hai.” Eugene called his name quietly.

Luo Hai didn’t respond. His lips were pressed into a thin line, his expression as cold and rigid as a statue as he turned away and walked forward.

“Luo Hai!” Eugene quickly caught up, reaching for his hand—only for Luo Hai to shake him off.

Eugene reached for him again. Luo Hai pulled away once more.

After the second time, Eugene finally used force. He seized Luo Hai’s wrist in a firm grip, refusing to let go no matter how hard he struggled.

“What are you so mad about? Don’t be angry.” Eugene pulled him closer, his voice low and gentle. “Come on, let me treat you to a meal, okay?”

Eugene’s coaxing tone, as if he were pacifying a girlfriend, completely infuriated Luo Hai.

This shallow, frivolous man always treated everything like a lovers’ quarrel.

He never cared about Luo Hai’s pain, his struggles, the deep suffering he had repressed for over a decade just to survive in this world.

“Let go!” Luo Hai raised his voice in anger, forcefully trying to shake off Eugene’s grip.

But Eugene’s strength was too great, and with Luo Hai already injured, he had no chance of breaking free.

Eugene held onto his wrist with one hand while gripping his shoulder with the other, preventing him from hurting himself further in his struggle. From an outsider’s perspective, the posture looked almost like an embrace.

“Beef and cheese hot pot,” Eugene insisted. “I know a place in District Six that makes the best cheese hot pot. The bread is crispy and golden, the beef is so tender it practically drips with juice, and when you dip it in the pot, it gets coated in a thick, gooey layer of cheese…”

“Let go!” Luo Hai gritted his teeth. “What do we look like, pulling at each other in front of so many people?”

“This embarrasses you, Mr. Prosecutor?” Eugene lowered his voice. “If you keep being stubborn, I could always get down on one knee, hold out a ring and a bouquet, and propose to you in front of everyone. What do you think?”

Luo Hai’s pupils trembled in shock.

Even after knowing Eugene for so long, he was still stunned by the man’s sheer shamelessness.

Not far away, Fanny and the officers had shifted from surprise to amusement, occasionally whispering among themselves.

“Beef and cheese hot pot, okay?” Eugene squeezed Luo Hai’s palm lightly.

Luo Hai shut his eyes, took a deep breath, then let it out slowly. In the end, he gave up resisting.
