HS Chapter 15

Cute Maoqiu

An Xue was very happy to know Yan Chen was willing to help out, but she still had one concern.

While everyone had their headphones on listening to the textbook, An Xue sent a private message to Ye Wenyu:

An Xue: [Wenyu, I haven’t heard Yan Chen’s voice before. Are you sure it meets the requirements I listed?]

Ye Wenyu: [Yeah. His voice sounds really good.]

An Xue: [That’s good, that’s good.]

An Xue: [But when he said “a bit” of French, how much is “a bit”? Don’t tell me it’s mute French where he can only read and not speak QAQ]

That was something Ye Wenyu hadn’t asked in detail.

Yan Chen wasn’t the kind of person who showed off without ability. Since he was helping out on someone’s behalf, if he wasn’t confident, he definitely wouldn’t have agreed.

Ye Wenyu: [I’m not sure exactly how much he knows, but since he knows it’s for dubbing, it shouldn’t be mute French.]

An Xue: [That makes sense…]

An Xue: [But I’m still not reassured! You know I’ve been going crazy these past few days trying to find a male lead. If I get all excited now and it turns out to be a disappointment, I’ll really go crazy T.T]

Ye Wenyu thought silently to himself: same here.

No one wanted Yan Chen to pass the voice test and join the dubbing group more than he did.

But An Xue’s words left him uncertain for a moment:

Ye Wenyu: [Then what should I do?]

An Xue: [Can you ask him again, just to be sure / starry eyes. This kind of thing can’t be crammed at the last minute. You really need some language foundation.]

‘Ask again?’ Ye Wenyu hesitated.

He was the one asking for help, and now he’d be the one questioning how much the other person really knew, it was inappropriate no matter how he looked at it.

But An Xue’s concern wasn’t unreasonable either. Caught between being unable to refuse and unable to ask, he suddenly thought of a compromise.

Ye Wenyu: [You can ask Maoqiu. He and Yan Chen are friends. If nothing unexpected happened, Yan Chen probably came to help us because he asked him.]

An Xue suddenly understood: [Oh! Since they’re good friends, he must know everything about Yan Chen!]

An Xue: [Great! I’m going right now!]

Ye Wenyu replied with an “Okay,” put down his phone, turned the page of his book, and prepared to focus on listening to the audio.

Unexpectedly, less than two minutes later, he received another message from An Xue:

An Xue: [Maoqiu has set it so others can’t initiate chats with him through group chats. Damn it!]

An Xue: [He’s not accepting my friend request either!]

Ye Wenyu held one earphone with one hand and typed with the other:

Ye Wenyu: [He’s probably in class and hasn’t seen it yet. Just wait patiently.]

He rarely spoke in the class group, so he didn’t even know there was a setting to block chat initiation via group chat.

So after replying to An Xue, he found Maoqiu in the group members list and tentatively sent a “1”. As expected, the message showed a red exclamation mark indicating it failed to send.

So it was true.

Above the note were two small boxes, one for blacklist, one for adding as a friend. Ye Wenyu clicked “Add Friend” without thinking much.

The request was sent, and he didn’t expect it to be accepted so quickly. But just as he returned to the chat page, a new line of system text appeared under the exclamation-marked message:

[You are now friends with Maoqiu. You can start chatting.]

Ye Wenyu: ?

“Hey, Yan-ge.” Dong Xi came in from the balcony, shaking off water from his hands. When he saw Yan Chen, he asked, “Where did you go? I’ve been looking for you.”

Yan Chen pulled out a chair and sat down. “What’s up?”

Dong Xi: “The boss who delivers our water said they’re changing businesses and won’t be delivering anymore. So we contacted another company and are currently discussing whether to switch the brand.”

Yang Liang was playing a game again, smashing the keyboard loudly, while tossing out options: “There’s Blue Sword, Yibao, and Xiling Spring.”

Yan Chen didn’t care: “Whatever, you guys decide.”

Dong Xi pulled out a tissue to dry his hands. “Alright then, I’ll reply to the boss and go with Yibao.”

“Mm.” Yan Chen picked up his phone and unlocked it. The friend request had been accepted for over a minute, but the chat box was still empty. The other party hadn’t sent a message.

But the note at the top kept switching between [Ye Wenyu] and [Typing].

What was he writing? A short essay?

“Oh right, let me tell you some interesting news…Zhen Lin and Liu Bingran are probably together now.”

Dong Xi: “I just got back from the supermarket and saw the two of them kissing outside the dorm.”

“Huh? Those two?”

Yang Liang looked like he’d just eaten shit. “Didn’t Zhen Lin like Yan-ge? He shamelessly clung to him for so long and now just turns around like that? And Liu Bingran doesn’t mind?”

Dong Xi: “Who knows. But if they’re really together, it’s not a bad thing. At least Zhen Lin won’t bother Yan-ge anymore, and we won’t have to keep seeing Liu Bingran in the dorm.”

“Oh, that makes sense.” Yang Liang grinned. “Then I hope he goes out every day for dates and doesn’t come back at night.”

Yan Chen wasn’t interested in their gossip. Seeing that Ye Wenyu still hadn’t sent a message, he finally tapped out two words to break the deadlock:

Maoqiu: [Wenyu, what’s up?]

After typing the question mark, the system automatically suggested an animated bunny emoji looking confused.

When Yan Chen saw the bunny, he was reminded of Ye Wenyu’s bunny-shaped eraser, so he tapped it casually.

The emoji appeared right under the last message, and the image of [Maoqiu] instantly turned several degrees cuter and softer.

On the other end, since the friend request had been accepted so suddenly, Ye Wenyu hadn’t even decided whether to first ask who the other party was or jump straight into the topic. Instead, the other person spoke first.

Because Maoqiu’s previous messages in the group had always been concise and cool, Ye Wenyu had naturally assumed they were a boy. Only now did he realize that might not be the case.

Someone who sent such cute emojis was probably a girl, right?

Since the other party had already spoken, asking “who are you” now would be too abrupt and weird. Ye Wenyu had no choice but to go with option two:

Ye Wenyu: [Sorry to bother you. I wanted to ask, about the dubbing thing…was it you who asked Yan Chen to come help?]

Yan Chen typed a single word [Yes] into the chat box, but before sending it, he glanced at the bunny emoji and, after thinking for a moment, added two more words:

Maoqiu: [Yes indeed.]

Much more harmonious.

He opened the emoji pack search for that bunny, downloaded the entire series into his frequently used emojis, and then sent a second message:

Maoqiu: [Why, he’s not helpful?]

Maoqiu: [/Bunny feeling wronged jpg.]

Ye Wenyu: [No, we haven’t done a voice test yet. I just wanted to ask if you know what level his French is at?]

Yan Chen had already expected this question.

He had been deliberately vague. Maybe Ye Wenyu, after failing to find a suitable candidate for so long, had accepted out of desperation. But once he calmed down and thought about it, he would realize the problem.

A sports student saying he knew “a bit” of French…how much could that really be? It was hard to judge.

What he didn’t expect was that Ye Wenyu hadn’t come to ask him directly, but went to ask [Maoqiu].

Maoqiu: [Don’t worry, his French is quite good.]

Maoqiu: [His aunt is French. The whole family has been living in France. He learned French for years just to argue with his annoying cousin.]

Maoqiu: [/Silently hugging my carrot jpg.]

‘He learned French for several years just to argue with his cousin?’

Ye Wenyu was speechless for a moment.

Wasn’t this a bit different from the Yan Chen he had imagined? He couldn’t even picture Yan Chen fluently cursing someone out in French.

But he couldn’t help feeling it was a bit…cute for some reason.

But using the word “cute” to describe Yan Chen was already the biggest discrepancy.

Ye Wenyu felt like his thoughts were heading into a strange dead end, so he quickly stopped himself and pulled the topic back on track:

Ye Wenyu: [Okay, got it. Thank you.]

Ye Wenyu: [Also, we don’t mean to distrust him, we just wanted to confirm for the sake of the upcoming voice test. Could I trouble you not to tell Yan Chen that I asked you about this?]

The person in question replied with no psychological burden at all:

Maoqiu: [Okay~]

Maoqiu: [And no need to be afraid of him. He has a really good temper, just a bit shy and not talkative. Wenyu, you’re the only one he knows in the dubbing group, so please take care of him more~]

Maoqiu: [/Twitching ears jpg.]

Author’s note:

Wenyu: cats are cute, pet the cat~

Yan-ge: No, you haven’t touched me before, so how can I let the cat cut in line?!
