The Xuanjia Stinger Insect is a type of insectoid resembling a scorpion. Its tail stinger is venomous, it moves incredibly fast, and its shell is extraordinarily thick. Ordinary handheld rifles cannot kill it. For a soldier without exoskeleton armor or a mecha, encountering this insectoid is certain death.
In this scenario, either Yu Chen or Yun Xunlan must die here—this is the test question.
Yun Xunlan must make a choice.
He must decide whether to sacrifice himself as bait to distract the Xuanjia Stinger Insect, giving his partner Yu Chen the chance to pass through the hatch and reach compartment six to activate the mecha; or to let Yu Chen act as bait and sacrifice himself, allowing Yun Xunlan to reach compartment six and activate the mecha.
Alternatively, he could refuse both paths and choose to fight alongside Yu Chen, attempting to create a miracle together.
No matter which path Yun Xunlan chooses, he can earn points—the difference lies in how high or low those points are.
Choosing the first path yields the highest score because Yu Chen’s performance on the battlefield is “weak.” It would be most appropriate for Yun Xunlan to defend the line and sacrifice himself. This choice is cruel, but if they fail to hold the line, even if both survive, it would be meaningless.
If Yun Xunlan chooses the second path, he won’t achieve the highest score. However, this choice demonstrates his kindness, bravery, and willingness to sacrifice for his teammate, earning him points nonetheless. But his sacrifice wouldn’t be optimal because Yu Chen’s combat skills aren’t strong enough to hold the line alone—the insectoids would ultimately break through.
Similarly, choosing the third path of fighting alongside Yu Chen also earns points but results in both of them being killed by the Xuanjia Stinger Insect and the line being breached.
The scenarios where no points can be earned are if Yun Xunlan pushes Yu Chen forward to attract the insectoid while escaping himself; hesitates and wastes time; or flees in panic with a mental breakdown.
When Yun Xunlan stopped walking, Yu Chen followed the scenario’s background settings and delivered his lines: “We can’t get past the Xuanjia Stinger Insect unnoticed. One of us has to distract it. Lanlan, between us… who should go?”
Yun Xunlan’s golden eyes narrowed coldly as he stared at the Xuanjia Stinger Insect without a moment’s hesitation. As soon as Yu Chen finished speaking, Yun Xunlan decisively replied: “I’ll go.”
Yu Chen continued according to the test script: “But you’re stronger than me—I’m worried I won’t be able to hold the line alone.”
Unexpectedly, Yun Xunlan turned his head and looked at him with an apologetic yet helpless expression. Softly, he said: “Yes, you can’t hold it. I’m sorry, Yu Chen—I don’t mean to hurt your feelings, but you’re really… not very capable.”
Yu Chen froze for two seconds before continuing: “…Then maybe I should go distract the Xuanjia Stinger Insect instead?”
“No, you can’t go. If you go, you’ll definitely die,” Yun Xunlan shook his head firmly. “So it should be me.”
Yu Chen found Yun Xunlan’s logic perplexing. To clarify his understanding, he asked: “Are you saying that if you go, you won’t die?”
Yun Xunlan gave an answer that completely caught Yu Chen off guard: “Yes, I won’t die.”
Yu Chen: “…”
From “I’ll die” to “I won’t die,” Yun Xunlan oscillated between two extremes.
Yu Chen didn’t terminate the simulation battle. He searched for reasons behind Yun Xunlan’s statement and thought perhaps this was just an excuse to convince his teammate to let him take on the sacrifice. So he said: “Alright then—you go distract the Xuanjia Stinger Insect while I rush into compartment six to activate the mecha. Hold out as long as you can—I’ll come back to save you.”
Unexpectedly, Yun Xunlan shook his head again: “No, it’s too dangerous. I’ll go alone. You stay here and hide well—I’ll activate the mech and come back to save you.”
“…”
Yu Chen was completely speechless.
How could a living person possibly outrun the Xuanjia Stinger Insect? Even the most physically strong top-tier alpha couldn’t achieve that.
He hadn’t ended the simulation yet because he wanted to see what Yun Xunlan was planning to do.
Following Yun Xunlan’s request, Yu Chen found a hidden spot in the corridor and focused all his attention on the youth, watching him closely.
The silver-haired alpha turned back and smiled at him, signaling with his eyes for Yu Chen not to worry or be afraid. Then, with his head held high and his posture straight, Yun Xunlan walked resolutely toward compartment six without even glancing at the Xuanjia Stinger Insect. He didn’t adopt any defensive stances or even break into a run.
And so, moments later, the insect’s venomous tail pierced straight through him.
Yu Chen: “…”
Yu Chen pressed his throbbing temples.
The youth was lifted high into the air by the Xuanjia Stinger Insect’s tail stinger impaling his sternum. His face was full of confusion as he stared at the bloodied tail stinger protruding from his chest, seemingly unable to believe he had died like this.
The next second, the examinee stopped breathing, and the simulation ended.
Yu Chen removed his helmet and wiped his face with one hand.
When he lowered his hand, he noticed Yun Xunlan sitting across from him, secretly watching him with an innocent expression. Yu Chen slumped forward onto the desk.
He rested his forehead against the tabletop, staring at the ground, trying to keep all his speechlessness bottled up inside instead of letting it spill out—because he didn’t curse his wife.
Yun Xunlan slid his chair closer to Yu Chen’s side. He bent down slightly, tilted his head, and leaned his beautiful face toward Yu Chen’s. With a slight furrow in his brows and a concerned tone, he asked: “Baby, are you crying?”
Yu Chen raised his head and wiped his face again. Taking a deep breath and forcing himself to stay composed, he replied to Yun Xunlan: “I’m not crying.”
“I just need a moment.” After saying this, Yu Chen suddenly realized something—his eyes froze in place as he asked: “Wait… does this mean other tutors have cried before?”
The silver-haired youth straightened up alongside him, placing both hands neatly on his knees like a model student beloved by schoolteachers: “Mm, there were two this year—not too many.”
Yu Chen: “…Not too many?”
Yun Xunlan: “There were five last year.”
Yu Chen: “…”
Yu Chen interlocked his fingers and pressed them against his forehead, pondering deeply for three minutes but coming up empty-handed. Finally, he asked Yun Xunlan: “Your Highness, can you tell me why you didn’t dodge the Xuanjia Stinger Insect’s attack? Did you think you were invincible?”
Yun Xunlan called him “baby” repeatedly as if trying to appease him and prevent any anger: “Baby, I don’t want to lie to you. Do you want to hear the truth?”
In reality, Yu Chen’s tone throughout was calm.
Before dating Yun Xunlan, when he got frustrated by the youth’s behavior during simulations, he would speak with a heavier tone. Now that they were dating, he was incredibly gentle—he even bit down on his frustration and forced out a stiff smile while calling Yun Xunlan “baby” in return: “Yes—dying to know. Baby, please go ahead.”
Yun Xunlan spoke honestly: “Yes, I thought I was invincible.”
“…”
Upon hearing this, Yu Chen immediately slumped forward onto the desk again.
Yun Xunlan tilted his head once more to look at him.
But Yu Chen shut his eyes, refusing to meet Yun Xunlan’s gaze, afraid he might accidentally curse out loud—after all, he doesn’t curse his wife.
“He’s definitely swallowing his tears and pretending to be fine,” the system clicked its tongue twice and scolded Yun Xunlan: “Yun Xunlan, look at yourself! You’re such a terrible alpha! You’ve only been dating for a few days, and you’ve already made your lover cry.”
“My second simulation battle was unlucky—I encountered an AI officer who cursed people. But in such life-and-death situations, even if no one cursed me, I would still go out,” Yun Xunlan lamented with regret. “If I hadn’t encountered that officer, I wouldn’t have recklessly faced the enemy. Instead, I would’ve been cautious and avoided sudden death.”
The system sighed: “What’s done is done. There’s no point in dwelling on it. Quickly go comfort Yu Chen—be careful he doesn’t break up with you.”
Yun Xunlan immediately went to hug Yu Chen.
He wrapped his arms around the alpha’s shoulders, pulling Yu Chen’s head into his embrace and gently stroking the back of his neck: “Baby, it’s all my fault. Please don’t cry.”
Yu Chen wasn’t crying, but he couldn’t hold back a laugh from being so exasperated by Yun Xunlan.
“Damn it, I’m not crying,” he muttered softly as he grabbed Yun Xunlan’s wrist. “I’m still in my susceptible period—don’t touch me randomly.”
Yun Xunlan explained: “I’m not touching randomly—I’m stroking your gland.”
Yu Chen tilted his face upward from Yun Xunlan’s embrace, looking helplessly at the silver-haired youth’s golden eyes as he said: “Do you realize that’s a sexual gesture?”
Yun Xunlan replied truthfully: “I didn’t know; I only knew this action is quite intimate.”
“But we’re a couple, aren’t we?” He lowered his head slightly, letting Yu Chen’s figure fill his gaze. “A little intimacy shouldn’t be an issue, right?”
“It is an issue,” Yu Chen’s voice grew hoarse, his breathing becoming heavier. After saying this, he pulled away from Yun Xunlan’s embrace.
Like a curious student eager for knowledge, Yun Xunlan pursued him with questions: “What kind of issue?”
Then he answered himself: “Is it a sexual issue?”
Yu Chen wanted to slump forward again—but this time, it wasn’t his head that wanted to go down.
Yun Xunlan lowered his gaze toward Yu Chen’s legs.
Quickly reacting, Yu Chen grabbed Yun Xunlan’s wrist again before the youth could touch him and hoarsely “educated” him: “Touching the gland is a sexual gesture; touching here is a sexual invitation.”
Yun Xunlan leaned forward slightly, his lips hovering close to Yu Chen’s: “Then, Teacher Yu… do you want to do it with me?”
Yu Chen grabbed Yun Xunlan’s other wrist as well and leaned down to plant a kiss on the youth’s forehead. He replied firmly, word by word: “Not tonight.”
Having witnessed Yun Xunlan’s performance in two simulation battles tonight, Yu Chen felt deeply wounded—he couldn’t muster any energy anymore.
No matter how hard he tried to figure it out, he couldn’t understand why Yun Xunlan’s combat behavior was so bizarre.
However, Yun Xunlan didn’t think Yu Chen was incapable—after all, the evidence was right in front of him. Even wearing slim-fit black pants couldn’t hide it.
The more Yun Xunlan looked, the more he felt that Yu Chen’s size really didn’t seem like it could fit into his underwear.
So Yun Xunlan said to Yu Chen: “But I feel like you really want to do it.”
Considering his size had grown several notches larger, how could he not want to?
Yu Chen was utterly defeated by Yun Xunlan. At this point, he felt that His Highness’s ability to say things that left people speechless was growing stronger by the day.
He glanced at the youth’s legs and countered: “But you don’t want to, do you?”
Yun Xunlan froze slightly at those words.
—He was different from Yu Chen; he hadn’t reacted at all.
“Disaster! He’s going to realize you don’t have those worldly desires!” The system panicked, completely flustered. “He might even figure out that you’re only with him for his mouth, not for him as a person!”
Yun Xunlan: “…”
He wanted to explain to Yu Chen: “It’s not that I don’t want to—I just…”
But he couldn’t immediately think of a reason or excuse.
He stood there in a daze, filled with uncertainty—not because of the system’s words, but unsure of why he felt so lost in the first place.
In his confusion, Yu Chen suddenly hugged him.
The alpha let him lean against him, his hand gently and slowly stroking Yun Xunlan’s back: “Alright, I’m really not angry. You didn’t score zero today.”
Yun Xunlan rested his face on Yu Chen’s shoulder and softly asked: “…Then how many points did I score?”
Yu Chen replied: “Let’s say twenty.”
Yun Xunlan’s lips curled slightly: “That high?”
“Mm, Lanlan has made great progress,” Yu Chen chuckled softly as he rubbed his chin against Yun Xunlan’s hair. “So I’m especially happy tonight.”
Yun Xunlan smiled with curved eyes: “What if I regress in the next test and go back to scoring zero?”
“Then I’ll really be angry,” Yu Chen “warned” him. “I might even scold you.”
The system cheered: “It’s a deal!”
Yun Xunlan ignored the system and buried his face against Yu Chen’s neck: “Then I’ll try not to score zero.”
The system wailed in despair: “You fool!”
Unable to tolerate the system’s constant interruptions anymore, Yun Xunlan asked it: “Can you stop interfering with my relationship with Yu Chen?”
The system roared angrily: “Do you think I want to interfere? You’re already infatuated with male beauty and neglecting your mission!”
Yun Xunlan denied it: “I know what I’m doing—this is part of my plan. Don’t meddle, just observe quietly.”
The system was skeptical: “Really?”
