SDVPP Chapter 96

End

Rong Xu drove the car so fast that it almost lifted off the ground. His hands gripping the steering wheel were drained of all color, cold like a block of ice.

It was all because of his negligence that Chi Han had fallen into danger.

Rong Xu jerked the steering wheel hard, the tires screeching sharply as half the front of the car slid into the wild grass.

There was no road ahead.

Without a moment’s hesitation, he got out of the car and stepped into the overgrown grass. The waist-high weeds and the uneven ground quickly swallowed up his figure.

Over ten minutes later, Rong Xu saw the abandoned factory. The red bricks were flaking off, looking old and worn.

Inside was deathly silent. Only at the entrance were two people leaning against the wall with baseball bats, their mouths chewing constantly, blowing a bubble now and then.

Rong Xu narrowed his eyes halfway, picked up a stone from the ground, and weighed it in his hand. It was heavy enough to knock out an adult.

The two men at the door were still chatting idly when suddenly a sharp whoosh cut through the air, and one of them dropped to the ground in an instant.

The other man: “!!”

He immediately raised his baseball bat, glancing around in panic: “Who’s there?! Come out! Do you even know who our boss is?”

Rong Xu slowly stood up from the weeds, casually shrugged off his suit jacket, then rolled up his sleeves.

The corner of his lips curled up, and the ferocity in his eyes was enough to devour someone alive:

“Perfect. I’m looking for him, too.”

After knocking two people down, Chi Han’s wound on his wrist tore open again, the white fabric soaking through with bright red.

Because the wound was close to an artery, Chi Han was afraid he wouldn’t be able to stop the bleeding and might lose too much blood, so he re-bandaged it again.

He was using Fang Jingluo’s shirt.

Who knew where Xu Ting had thrown his phone and jacket, so he could only make do with Fang Jingluo’s for now.

But when he turned on the phone, Chi Han realized there was no signal here at all, not even 2G.

After fiddling with it for a long while, he could only give up on that idea for now.

Chi Han pushed open the door and carefully made his way down to the first floor, afraid he might run into Xu Ting’s or one of Fang Jingluo’s people. But the whole place was dead silent, until he saw the gasoline drums by the wall and the liquid spilled all over the floor, his mind buzzed in an instant.

No wonder there was no one here except Xu Ting. This guy had planned to go down together from the very start!

Good thing he managed to subdue him first.

The main door on the first floor was a metal rolling shutter, which needed electricity to open.

Chi Han didn’t dare take that risk.

It was pure luck that Fang Jingluo got in just now. If even a single spark had been set off somewhere, the three of them would’ve been sent off together.

Chi Han slowly backed up to the second floor and went into the room next door.

He poked his head out the window and saw that about two meters down to the left, there was an awning. It didn’t look very sturdy, but it definitely wouldn’t kill him if he fell.

Chi Han pulled back inside to mentally brace himself. He was a bit afraid of heights.

A few minutes later, he crawled out backwards, shut his eyes, and was about to let go.

“Chi Han!”

As soon as Rong Xu came in, he saw this scene that made his heart stop in an instant. His voice even changed pitch.

Chi Han just happened to be at the most critical moment. Instinctively, he turned his head to look, his hand slipped, and he went down.

He didn’t even have time to scream. The sudden drop made his face go deathly pale.

The next second, Chi Han landed in a burning-hot embrace. The two of them rolled on the ground once before the force was absorbed.

Chi Han felt himself held tightly in the other’s arms, so firmly that it almost crushed him. He couldn’t tell whose heartbeat was pounding faster right next to his ear. All of a sudden, a wave of fear washed over him. He clung to Rong Xu, trembling all over.

Rong Xu’s arms were trembling, too, pain shooting through him, but he didn’t care at all. He just kept rubbing Chi Han’s back over and over, his voice low and steady: “It’s okay now, it’s okay, baby, I’m here, don’t be afraid.”

Chi Han took a few seconds to calm down. This place still wasn’t safe. They had to get out.

He forced himself up and pulled Rong Xu up from the ground, the two of them supporting each other as they ran for the door.

“Go, Rong Xu, hurry! The whole place is full of gasoline!”

When Rong Xu came through that patch of wild grass, his shirt had already been torn open in several places. After rolling on the ground just now, he looked even more battered.

He bent down, hoisted Chi Han onto his back, and strode out. Chi Han lay on his back, eyes rimmed red.

No matter what, it was his first time going through something like this. Back then, he’d forced himself through on sheer will. Now that he’d found someone to rely on, the fear finally caught up to him.

Chi Han pressed his face against Rong Xu’s shoulder blade and secretly wiped away his tears.

Rong Xu felt the damp warmth soaking into his back, and his heart ached fiercely. He hitched Chi Han up a bit higher and quickened his pace.

Rong Xu’s gaze turned cold and dark. Starting today, certain people will be wiped off the face of this earth.

The two of them had just gotten about fifty meters away when a deafening explosion suddenly tore through the air, and a massive wave of heat flattened all the surrounding grass.

Chi Han was tightly shielded under Rong Xu’s body, only feeling like every bit of exposed skin was being seared.

When the heat wave finally faded, Chi Han turned his head back. Not far behind them, the abandoned factory was now shrouded in billowing black smoke, with flames faintly roaring up into the sky.

Xu Ting and Fang Jingluo were still inside.

For a moment, Chi Han didn’t know what he felt. His mind was blank.

It wasn’t pity, exactly, more like a sigh at how it all ended.

Two living, breathing people, just gone like that.

If he hadn’t made it out in time…

Chi Han instinctively hugged Rong Xu and closed his eyes.

He might have gone home, or maybe he would’ve been pulled into the next book. But he would never see his Rong Xu again.

That was something more terrifying than death.

Rong Xu felt Chi Han’s turmoil. He lifted him up and held him firmly in his arms as he carried him out of the wild grass.

Dying in that explosion was too easy a way out for them. If they somehow survived…

Rong Xu grabbed the blanket from the car and carefully wrapped Chi Han up in it, then started the engine.

The rearview mirror reflected the ferocity burning in his eyes.

If they were still alive, he’d dig three feet into the ground to find them, then grind their bones to dust!

The rest of the matter was handed over to the police, and Rong Xu drove straight to the hospital.

Halfway there, Chi Han started burning up with a fever, his teeth clenched tight, shivering and muttering that he was cold.

The assistant had already booked a hospital room in advance, and the doctor immediately began emergency treatment.

When Rong Xu saw the wounds on both of Chi Han’s wrists, a flash of crimson filled his eyes.

While the doctor was disinfecting the wounds, Chi Han instinctively frowned and flinched away. Rong Xu’s heart ached so badly he could hardly stand it. His face darkened as he ordered the doctor to be gentler. The assistant hurried to smooth things over, speaking kindly to the doctor and calming Rong Xu down for a long time before he finally fell silent.

Both of those thin wrists were wrapped in thick layers of gauze, IV needles stuck into the backs of his hands, his face flushed red with fever, and even his lips were cracked open.

Besides that, there were wounds on his legs and waist, and his whole body was covered with countless bruises and scrapes.

Rong Xu rested his forehead gently against Chi Han’s wrist, not saying a word, his back looking unexpectedly fragile.

When Song Yao heard what happened, she rushed over at once and saw Chi Han lying on the hospital bed, with Rong Xu right beside him.

“What happened? Chi Han’s hurt?! Is it serious?”

Seeing the scene before her made Song Yao panic a little. Both of them were her friends. If something happened to one of them, she didn’t know how the other would even go on living.

The assistant leaned against the doorframe and let out a soft sigh: “Young Master Chi was just rescued. He took down Xu Ting and Fang Jingluo himself.”

The people he’d called in a panic turned out to be completely useless. None of them could compare to Young Master Chi alone.

Song Yao: “…”

Her expression froze awkwardly. “He knocked them down, but why is he the one lying in a hospital bed?”

The assistant shifted position and sighed again. “He was wearing too little and caught a chill while escaping.”

Song Yao closed her eyes for a moment: “……”

She was honestly speechless. Seeing Rong Xu’s expression just now, she thought Chi Han was in critical condition.

“Forget it. As long as Chi Han’s fine, that’s all that matters. The Rong family’s already in chaos. Word just came in that Old Master Rong’s cerebral infarction has relapsed, and he’s been taken to the hospital.” Because of Rong Xu, Song Yao had long disliked the rest of the Rong family. Hearing this news now made her feel a rush of satisfaction.

“Why don’t you go ask Rong Xu what he wants to do next?”

The assistant nodded, lowering his voice: “Let’s wait a bit. Little boss is still upset right now.”

Song Yao couldn’t help but purse her lips, but her eyes still instinctively drifted toward the hospital room, an involuntary hint of envy rising in her chest.

With a husband like that, what more could you ask for?

By evening, Chi Han had only woken up briefly. Once he confirmed Rong Xu was unharmed, he fell back into a deep sleep.

While delivering dinner, the assistant quietly updated Rong Xu on the situation.

There wasn’t much to say about the Rong family. Without Old Master Rong as their backbone, the rest of them were scattered and chaotic. Some were already trying to split off and grab what they could, while Xu Man was still dreaming of swallowing up the entire family fortune, currently scheming with others.

As for Xu Ting, he really had died inside that factory. Fang Jingluo had set the fire himself to fake Xu Ting’s death, but when he tried to escape, his car got stuck in a mud pit, and he was caught red-handed by the police who arrived.

The assistant put down his chopsticks and spoke softly: “A friend at the station said Fang Jingluo is now asking for a psychiatric evaluation, probably trying to use it as an excuse to avoid prison.”

Rong Xu held Chi Han’s hand tighter, gently tucking the blanket around him. His face stayed completely expressionless, his voice flat and calm: “Then let’s help him out. Perfect timing. I don’t want him locked up anyway. Otherwise, that special place I found just for him would go to waste.”

Rong Xu bent down and pressed a gentle kiss to Chi Han’s lips, then straightened up and walked toward the door.

“Stay by the door. Don’t leave. Call a few more people over to guard it well.”

The assistant nodded, but as he watched Rong Xu’s back, he couldn’t help but ask, “Boss, where are you going?”

Rong Xu didn’t pause at all. His calm tone somehow sent a chill down the spine.

“I’m going to the Rong house to find Fang Jingluo a companion.”

Outside the hospital room, a crowd had gathered. Inside, the head of the Rong family, Rong Guanyu, lay there, looking like he was about to be paralyzed for good. Xu Man didn’t spare him a single glance, busy instead bargaining with the people outside.

Rong Guanyu, who had once dominated everything, now had no one by his side. At this moment, he finally tasted the warmth and coldness of the world. He glared with wide eyes, gasping for breath, unable to form a single clear word, his body covered in tubes.

“Madam, now that my father’s like this, it’s only right that we split up the family assets.” A man in a suit sat slouched in his chair, not even pretending to be respectful.

Xu Man felt her liver ache with rage. This man was one of Rong Guanyu’s illegitimate sons from his younger days. There were plenty like him in the Rong family, usually bowing and scraping, acting meek and obedient. But the moment something like this happened, they turned into the worst troublemakers!

Xu Man had two sons of her own. Right now, she most wanted her eldest, Rong Anping, to inherit the family fortune. But what she hadn’t expected was that the first to jump up in opposition would be her youngest son.

Most of the people present were in favor of dividing up the family property.

Splitting the family meant getting a piece of something good. If they didn’t splurge too wildly, they could live comfortably for the rest of their lives. But if they stayed tied to this sinking ship, who knew when they’d all go down with it!

On the surface, the Rong family looked incomparably glorious, but in reality, it had long since been hollowed out from the inside. With so many people in this big family, how many actually brought in any real money? Most of them either lived off the old man’s savings or squandered recklessly.

Just in the past few months, several of their companies had already gone under. Starting this morning, seventy to eighty percent of their partners suddenly began canceling collaborations.

If there had been binding contracts, at least they could have demanded huge compensation fees—but the ones backing out were all those who renewed deals with them year after year. The money had already been invested, but the contracts had expired!

They could only watch helplessly as those people left, while the Rong family lost everything they’d sunk in. The capital chain broke in an instant.

The old head of the family panicked, suffered another stroke on the spot, and instantly lost consciousness. By the time he was revived, only his eyes could still move.

Most people in the Rong family knew in their hearts: this family was done for.

Just as Xu Man was still talking up a storm in front of everyone, the surroundings slowly fell silent, until in the end, only her own voice echoed in the corridor.

Xu Man paused, turned around in confusion, only to find that everyone’s eyes were fixed on a man not far away—a man with cold, finely cut features like a painting.

Xu Man’s exquisitely manicured nails dug into her palm, her smile almost slipping from her face. “Rong Xu… what are you doing here?!”

Rong Xu straightened his cuff, the corner of his lips lifting in a chill so faint it cut like a blade. “Naturally, I’ve come to see the head of the Rong family.”

Rong Xingwen, who had been hiding in the crowd not daring to speak, suddenly saw Rong Xu and his eyes lit up. He pushed his way out at once. “Rong Xu, I’m your father! You’re finally back!”

The disgust in Rong Xu’s eyes was impossible to hide. He grabbed the hand that reached out to him, twisted it hard, then flung it away, pulling a silk handkerchief from his pocket and carefully wiping each of his fingers clean.

Rong Xingwen couldn’t stand pain at all. He was already screaming like a pig being slaughtered, only to be immediately pinned to the ground and his mouth covered by one of Rong Xu’s men.

“So filthy.”

Rong Xu tossed the handkerchief aside, his expression turning calm as he looked at Xu Man and said, “I don’t want to waste my time, and I don’t want to dirty my hands on you.”

Xu Man looked at Rong Xingwen’s miserable state, and her whole body started trembling.

A venomous snake!

She should have drowned him back then when she had the chance!

She wanted to block his way, but her legs refused to obey. Faced with Rong Xu’s chilling gaze, she ended up stepping aside and letting him pass through the doorway.

“You all stay here. Don’t let anyone disturb this room.” Rong Xu reached out and pushed the door open, shutting out the crowd’s prying eyes.

The moment Rong Xu went inside, everyone outside immediately started whispering among themselves. They’d almost forgotten that Rong Xu even existed. If Rong Xu were willing to step in and help, then surely the Rong family would rise to its peak once more!

Xu Man’s face turned livid as she listened to the murmurs around her.

Rong Xingwen was still pinned to the floor, so cold from the hard tiles that he was on the verge of passing out.

Everyone here only cared about their own gain. At this moment, their hideous, selfish faces were laid bare for all to see.

Inside the room, Rong Xu casually pulled up a chair and sat by the bedside. Looking at Rong Guanyu’s current state, he couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh.

“I’d actually prepared a big gift for you. Never thought you’d turn into this mess before I even began. Truly pathetic.”

At these words, Rong Guanyu’s eyes moved even faster, his stiff fingers twitched slightly, and his face flushed bright red. The monitor at his side started beeping urgently, alarm after alarm.

Looking at this wretched sight, Rong Xu fell silent for a moment before murmuring, “Pity my mother ever had a father like you.”

It was as if Rong Guanyu suddenly remembered something. His eyes actually turned red, but to Rong Xu, it was just filth in his sight.

He asked coldly, “How much were you involved in what happened to Chi Han?”

Rong Guanyu’s eyes moved with difficulty, his pale lips curling slightly, as if mocking him.

Rong Xu let out a faint smile. “What a disappointment for you, then. Chi Han is perfectly fine. Xu Ting’s body is nothing but ashes now, and soon you’ll be seeing Fang Jingluo, too.”

Rong Xu stood up, lowered his gaze, and smiled, his eyes brimming with mockery. “In that completely sealed private nursing home, you, Fang Jingluo, and Xu Man, you’ll all spend the rest of your lives there. Enjoy it well. You still have a long time left.”

He opened the door and walked out without a trace of hesitation, leaving only Rong Guanyu behind, howling in agony on the bed.

But by now, there was no one left who cared whether he lived or died.

With the Rong family’s great house collapsed, there was no other choice but to cling to Rong Xu.

Once Rong Xingwen, Xu Man, and her two sons were cleared away, the remaining family members became much more obedient.

But Rong Xu’s next move caught everyone completely off guard: the majority of the family’s assets were divided among the illegitimate children, leaving only a small portion for the legitimate branch.

Many people voiced their dissatisfaction, but the moment they met Rong Xu’s cold eyes—and the row of black-clad men beside him—those voices all slowly fell silent, no one daring to utter another word.

So be it. Those illegitimate children had neither power nor influence; taking back what was in their hands would be as easy as turning a hand.

Then Rong Xu announced his second demand: everyone present from the Rong family must take their mother’s surname. He did not want to see the Rong family exist any longer.

If Xu Man and the others who had been taken away were still here, this would have been impossible to enforce. But the ones left behind were all peripheral branches with no strength to resist.

Everyone thought it over. Now that the family was split up, what was the point of still clinging to the Rong surname?!

If they had to change it, so be it—just as long as they got their share of the family assets!

Rong Guanyu would never have imagined that the Rong family he’d been so proud of all his life would completely collapse in a single day, to the point that even the family name would no longer exist.

Rong Xu didn’t care in the slightest about how thrilled those illegitimate children were. Once he’d finished speaking, he got up and left.

The more they got now, the more debt they’d have to pay back later. What a pity, some people just never learn.

In a certain nursing home.

Rong Xu looked at Fang Jingluo and Rong Guanyu, both strapped to their beds and unable to move, and gave a pleasant smile. “How is it? Still comfortable enough?”

Rong Guanyu was better off. He was already old and frail and couldn’t move anyway. But Fang Jingluo, still young and full of rage, cursed through gritted teeth: “You cripple! If you have the guts, kill me!”

Rong Xu’s smile grew even gentler, but the words he spoke made one’s blood run cold. “Heh, talking nonsense like that. Looks like you really do need more treatment.”

Fang Jingluo froze mid-struggle, his face turning utterly ashen.

If he’d known it would come to this, he’d have rather died with Xu Ting. Just imagining spending the next decades like this made Fang Jingluo’s heart sink into despair.

Rong Xu walked over to Rong Guanyu’s bedside, looking down at those cloudy eyes, and spoke softly, “You don’t need to worry either. Xu Man and her two sons have been arrested for their crimes. After ten or so years, I’ll make sure you’re reunited.”

Rong Guanyu trembled all over, an uncontrollable layer of fear surfacing in his eyes.

Devil!

This man was a devil!

Rong Xu raised his hand and drew the curtains in the room, shutting out the last sliver of sunlight from outside.

He seemed to murmur to himself, “Days without light… You should get a taste of that, too.”

When he came out of the nursing home, Rong Xu didn’t say a single word.

A whole night passed, and dawn had already broken.

His gaze shifted slightly toward the window, and his voice was low and hoarse: “Take a turn, go left.”

Inside the hospital room.

Chi Han’s fever had come and gone. He woke up several times, only to drift back to sleep again. The last time he opened his eyes, the morning light was already peeking through the window.

At least his temperature had finally come down.

Song Yao sat at the bedside, worrying about Rong Xu on one hand and Chi Han on the other.

She was peeling an apple, a faint furrow between her brows.

That Rong Xu. He’d gone out for an entire night; who knew what he’d been up to. Chi Han still wouldn’t fully wake up either. Neither of them would let anyone rest easy!

Seeing Chi Han’s lips cracking dry again, Song Yao quickly dipped the back of a spoon in water and gently moistened his lips. His body was covered in cuts and bruises. He looked terribly pitiful.

No wonder Rong Xu had gone so mad.

Just as she was thinking this, the door suddenly opened. Rong Xu stepped in slowly, bringing with him a chill from outside.

Song Yao’s eyes lit up, and she quickly moved aside to make room for him.

“You’re finally back! Chi Han was even talking in his sleep just now. He kept calling for you!”

Hearing this, Rong Xu’s eyes trembled slightly. He gave a small nod.

Song Yao set down the apple and tactfully slipped out of the room.

On the hospital bed, Chi Han’s breathing was steady now, the flush on his face had faded, but the bruises and scrapes on his body looked even more severe than yesterday.

When Rong Xu had caught Chi Han from below that balcony yesterday, both his arms had suffered mild tears—fine, spreading pain that hadn’t stopped since, but what hurt more was his heart.

Right now, Rong Xu’s emotions were a bit unstable. In his mind, the terrified look in Rong Guanyu’s eyes and Fang Jingluo’s curses kept circling endlessly.

Yes, the one in that nursing home, that was the real Rong Xu, with ruthlessness and darkness in his very bones.

A man like that, when he died, was bound for hell.

Rong Xu had never been afraid of that before. But now, there was someone beside him.

Would he have to drag Chi Han down with him, too?

Rong Xu slowly pressed his face against Chi Han’s palm, gently rubbing against it like a careful plea.

But he had no way to let this person go anymore.

Clutched in his pocket all the way back was a pair of men’s wedding rings—something he’d long wanted to buy but never dared to.

Once they wore them, the two of them would never be able to part for the rest of their lives.

In the next life, too.

Rong Xu took out one of the rings but couldn’t bring himself to slip it onto Chi Han’s finger right away.

Morning light fell on his faintly trembling eyelashes, casting a fragile halo of brightness.

The hand in his palm suddenly moved. Rong Xu froze and looked up. Chi Han’s eyes were half open, and the corners of his lips curved into a slightly weak smile. He spoke in a voice so soft it was almost just breath:

“Aren’t you going to put it on me? Are you planning to regret it?”

Rong Xu pressed his lips together, then dropped to one knee.

“Chi Han, I’m not a good man, but as long as I live, I will always love you and protect you. In this life, and the next.”

Chi Han’s nose stung, his throat tightened, but his smile was radiant:

“I know. This life, the next life, and every moment after, I love you, Rong Xu. I’ll never regret it.”

In that instant, Rong Xu’s eyes turned red. His fingertips trembled as he carefully, reverently slipped the wedding ring onto Chi Han’s finger—then bowed his head and kissed the ring with devotion.

Chi Han couldn’t get out of bed, but he braced himself up on his knees, managing to half-kneel on the bed to slide the other ring onto Rong Xu’s finger, pressing his own solemn kiss to it, too.

“Rong Xu, from now on, we’re bound together for good.” Chi Han looked at their joined hands, at the wedding bands touching on their ring fingers, and spoke softly.

Rong Xu lifted his hand to cover his eyes. Between his fingers, it was damp.

This was the first time he’d ever shed tears in front of Chi Han.

Chi Han couldn’t help wiping the corner of his own eyes, too, then pulled Rong Xu into his arms.

Rong Xu had always thought this world would only meet him with darkness—until that day Chi Han had flung himself into his arms without a second thought. Only then did he realize that even the gods loved him, too.

From this moment on, there would be no more suffering.

《How Did the Cub I Raised Turn So Dark?[mfn]我養的崽怎麽黑化了[/mfn]》

Blurb:

Ye Chen, who died unexpectedly, was pulled into a fully immersive xianxia [fantasy cultivation] raising-simulator game. Only by helping the game’s male lead become the ruler of all six realms can he be reborn and return home.

Confident in his self-proclaimed “game master” skills, Ye Chen went in full force and managed to die three times in the game.

The first time, his random role was the male lead Mu Shuang’s senior martial brother from the same sect.

Seeing the pitiful little “good-for-nothing” covered in wounds, Ye Chen’s protective instincts exploded: “Who dares bully the future supreme dragon? Beat ‘em up!”

Mu Shuang dodged his outstretched hand, eyes cold as frost: “Come one step closer and I’ll kill you.”

The second random role, he became the heir of a rival immortal sect.

On the dueling stage, a flash of cold light hovered at Ye Chen’s throat, drawing gasps from the crowd. The sword’s wielder stood distant and noble, gaze frigid—

Ye Chen carefully scooted back, face plastered with a fawning smile: “How about we talk this out? Just put the sword down first. I swear I won’t run!”

Mu Shuang lifted his eyes, smiling with that flawless, clear elegance: “Dead men don’t run.”

Ye Chen: “…”

How did the obedient cub he worked so hard to raise go astray again?!

The third time, right when the game started, someone told him that his cub had been sealed away—and the one who did it was exactly the body he’d possessed this round.

Ye Chen: “…”

Where’s the restart button???

The blackened, unsealed Mu Shuang exuded a murderous aura as he gently brushed Ye Chen’s lower eyelid—these eyes were a nightmare he’d long yearned for but couldn’t touch.

Mu Shuang’s voice was soft, but his eyes glowed blood-red and sticky with madness:
