I am a human ah, are you not?
Chapter 2.2: 愚人一无所有(二)
[Simpleton have nothing (II)]
Xu Jiu somehow wanted to smile again, because he saw that the supervisor was now standing at the forefront of the line to compensate for his apologetic smile, nodding his head and getting sprayed.
After laughing, his body still hurt, and he still had to act as if nothing had happened as he lined up for his tools and equipment.
“From today, no, from now on, these are your quarters.” Another researcher led them, familiarly, into a grey building, “This is not like the Outer Rim, with a shift system. Your usual working hours, work habits, biological clocks … all have to be changed.”
He said on one side, the supervisor on the other side was coyly obliged.
“Your men must be in place at seven o’clock every morning. And, unless someone here offers to help, your sanitation guys are not allowed to talk to anyone in the building, understand? If you get caught, I’ll say it up front, people’s lives here aren’t worth much.”
“That’s right! Yes,” The supervisor nodded his head as if he were pounding garlic, “You’re right.”
“Let’s see, your rank is C level … How did they transfer you, a C level manager? Isn’t this nonsense?” The researcher frowned tightly, “How about this, all the personnel on the first to third floors of this building are temporarily deployed by you, the map and warning instructions are all here, and if you still have any questions, just go to the system and send an application to ask the question.”
Glancing at the supervisor’s greasy and secretly delighted expression, Xu Jiu couldn’t stop the disgust in his heart. The researcher raised his hand and glanced at his wristwatch, saying, “I’ll give you two hours to settle in, and after two hours, arrange for the first wave of people to clear the experimental building without delay.”
After giving the order, he left without looking back.
Just like that, Xu Jiu was rushed onto a duck, suddenly becoming a participant in a top-secret project —— the kind that would lose his life at any time.
Like a particularly constricted pair of disposable chopsticks, or disposable gloves, he was unsurprisingly placed by his supervisor on the list of the first cleaners. Carrying a bucket, he walked awkwardly and shakily across the ice, through two levels of abatement, and into the interior of that mysterious experimental building.
The consensus of all the cleaners was that the best job was to go and clean the accommodation area of domestic waste, safe and harmless, with the chance of receiving some miscellaneous books and furniture unwanted by senior researchers and PhDs; the next best was to go and clean the administration districts and warehouses, which were clean and had little work, usually mopping the floors, scrubbing the glass and helping out with the waste paperwork, and the storage areas were tiring and full of work, but they did receive some goodies. Once again, the cleaners were to go and clean the sanitary block; this was a dirty and clean area, of course the toilets and wipes were dirty, but compared to the chemicals reagent, it was much cleaner.
The worst part of the job was going to the labs and moving around under the noses of those research freaks who treated human lives like dirt.
Xu Jiu was lucky this time, he was chosen to go to the office, where he swept and mopped the floor and packed up discarded documents. After half a day’s work with his back bent, he was put down for dinner only when he was really stretched to the point that his chest was pressed against his back and his eyes were dizzy.
However, as soon as he arrived at the canteen, Xu Jiu’s eyes instantly lit up.
There was actually freshly made hot rice, the hot one!
He still remembers to this day that the last normal meal he ate before leaving school was steamed buns and stir-fried vegetables, and at that time, he was still able to tear open the buns and chuck hot braised pork into them.
Since then, the shadow of this meal had accompanied him for a long time, making him drool even in his dreams.
Xu Jiu completely forgot about his physical discomfort and rushed to the back of the group to start spinning in circles, so excited that he turned on vibration mode. The Polar region’s resources are limited, hot meals and hot food, that has to be a treatment that only fellows can enjoy, the conditions here are so good?
The hot aroma straight to the nose, his saliva rushed to the person’s cheeks, sore, so that when it’s his turn, Xu Jiu carried a plate, and simply did not know how to speak.
The person who was serving the food, took a look at him, and put two big yellow steamed buns, a small spoon of pickled mustard greens, a spoon of scrambled eggs with edible tree fungus, and a piece of heated canned yellow croaker (fish) on his plate, and then signalled with his eyes for him to hurry up and get going.
In the cafeteria there are too many people, Xu Jiu can not even find a chair to sit on, randomly find a corner, and directly squat to the ground to open the meal. The first steamed bun was dry-chewed, he opened his mouth and took a bite, tears almost flowed down his face.
Too delicious!
Steamed bread with cornmeal, chewing very tough, his tongue tasted the faint sweetness of grain. He wolfed down one, and the second one deserved to be eaten more slowly. So Xu Jiu first broke open half, the sweet and sour sauce melon into the inside of the clip, with fungus scrambled eggs to eat. Scrambled egg salt put a little too much, but he felt that it wss just right. The last half of the steamed bread, he used the canned yellow croaker as a sauce, dipped and sent to his mouth.
Making a clean sweep of the meal, the plate is cleaner than the washed one, Xu Jiu is not yet finished,he feels that he can still eat two more dishes, but the ration of a meal is so much. He could only reluctantly put down his plate, and returned to the dormitory in three steps.
If he could eat this well every day, he thought to himself, he would just die immediately.
He briefly slept for three hours, and then it was his turn on the second shift, and this time he made it to two o’clock in the morning, and when he came back, he was so tired and thirsty that he drank water and fell back to sleep. At seven o’clock in the morning, Xu Jiu woke up, his body as if it was falling apart, he lifted the clothes to see; the place supervisor kicked yesterday, it turned deep purple, it looked quite scary.
Not caring a lot, he went to the public bathroom to wash up, and followed the army to the canteen to get his breakfast. Xu Jiu was looking forward to it, but when he looked at it, the breakfast was still the familiar nutritional congee and compressed biscuits.
Disappointed, but he also felt that this is quite good, after all, in one day to have a hot meal, is a good job that other people can not even beg for.
Wu Zhiqiang and Xu Jiu promised dried fruit. At this moment, he has been thrown beyond the topmost clouds. The supervisor who was promoted to higher position was also satisfied, temporarily forgetting to look for his trouble.
He then worked here without fear for four days, only for things to hit Xu Jiu’s head again on the fifth day.
At the time of the accident, he was handling discarded documents in his office on the ground floor, stuffing them into the shredder in order. At that moment, a rush of loud footsteps sounded in the corridor, and in the next second, the door to the office was pushed open, and two fellows in protective suits appeared, their tones agitated as they loudly urged, “Everyone in here, bring your tools and come with us!”
