The next morning, as soon as Lu Ze stepped out of the dorm, he felt a cool breeze in the corridor. He shrank his neck and turned back to change into a thicker jacket.
Mao Xin called out from behind, “Ze-ge, you forgot your umbrella.”
Lu Ze looked back, “Three people with three umbrellas?”
“What if it rains heavily?” Sun Zhuoyu said, taking down the umbrella hanging on Lu Ze’s desk. “Better take it.”
The rain did indeed get heavy, pouring down on their way to the cafeteria after class at noon. Sun Zhuoyu fumbled to open his umbrella, “Damn, is this hail?”
“Really?” Mao Xin was quite excited, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen hail before!”
He wanted to move the umbrella aside to look, but Lu Ze, too lazy to open his own umbrella, ducked under Mao Xin’s and grabbed the handle, saying: “Let’s run, you can be curious later.”
After running into the cafeteria, Mao Xin looked outside and said with a smile: “There really is hail.”
Sun Zhuoyu patted his clothes, “Come on, let’s eat. Don’t act like you’ve never seen the world.”
By the time they finished eating, not only had the rain not stopped, but it was getting heavier. Many students who didn’t bring umbrellas were stranded in the cafeteria. They had no afternoon classes, so they weren’t in a hurry. Lu Ze said, “Let’s wait a bit before leaving.”
Sun Zhuoyu nodded, “If I rush back now, my shoes will be ruined. I’d have to clean them again.”
He then held back the restless Mao Xin, “This isn’t the time for you to help others. If this rain doesn’t stop, we’ll each need an umbrella. If you give yours away, you’ll have to go back soaked. It’s not worth catching a cold…”
With nothing else to do, Lu Ze scrolled through his Moments and found that Liang Xiao had actually liked the post he made yesterday. He felt quite embarrassed but after hesitating for a moment, he still opened their chat and sent Liang Xiao a photo of the umbrella.
Lu Ze: [I thought you were just saying that yesterday, but looking at the weather forecast, it really is raining. Good thing I brought an umbrella, otherwise I’d be soaked like a drowned rat]
Liang Xiao: [Do you need me to pick you up?]
Lu Ze stared at his phone screen in shock, his mouth slightly open. What did this mean? He didn’t remember renting Liang Xiao as his boyfriend, did he?
After being shocked for a moment, he suddenly realized that Liang Xiao thought he had posted on Moments, and that his classmates and others had seen him say he would come pick him up.
Lu Ze quickly replied: [No need, no need, no need]
Lu Ze: [With such heavy rain, no one would pay attention to that anyway, it’s fine]
He casually asked: [Are you outside? Does anyone still look for you in this weather?]
Liang Xiao: [Yeah, it just finished and then it started pouring, can’t get back]
Lu Ze smiled: [Where are you? My roommates and I are now trapped in the cafeteria]
Liang Xiao mentioned a place, and Lu Ze was surprised: [That’s near our school]
Liang Xiao named the school, and Lu Ze replied: [Yes, that’s the one]
Lu Ze: [Didn’t you bring an umbrella? Have you found a place to take shelter?]
Liang Xiao: [Found a McDonald’s]
Sun Zhuoyu suddenly jumped up from his seat, startling Lu Ze, “Where are you going?”
Sun Zhuoyu looked at his phone and said, “The senior didn’t bring an umbrella, and she has a class in the first period this afternoon. I need to bring her an umbrella.”
Mao Xin stared at him with wide eyes, “Who was lecturing me just now?”
Sun Zhuoyu waved his hand, “That’s different. You don’t have someone you like. Giving your umbrella to others will only get you a ‘thank you,’ but I might get a girlfriend out of this.”
After saying this, Sun Zhuoyu looked at Lu Ze again, “Right, Master?”
“Where is she stuck?” Lu Ze asked.
“The library,” Sun Zhuoyu said.
“Then she probably hasn’t had lunch,” Lu Ze said. “Pack some food for her.”
Sun Zhuoyu nodded, “Master, you’re always so thoughtful.”
He was about to leave when Lu Ze called him back, “Make it two portions! Doesn’t she have a close friend with her?”
Sun Zhuoyu gave Lu Ze a respectful bow.
Mao Xin watched them both in astonishment. After Sun Zhuoyu left, he said, “Ze-ge, why didn’t you stop him and instead helped him? What if he catches a cold?”
Lu Ze clicked his tongue, “Why stop him? Did you see his determination? Could we have stopped him? Besides, if he really catches a cold, it might be a good thing. He could gain some sympathy.”
Mao Xin shook his head, saying with great incomprehension, “As someone who’s never been in a relationship, I really don’t understand you guys.”
“Not you guys, just him,” Lu Ze corrected him. “I’ve never used tricks like this.”
Mao Xin smiled, “I see, Master is teaching according to the student’s aptitude, right?”
Lu Ze nodded, “You’re a quick learner.”
After chatting with Mao Xin for a while, he remembered he was in the middle of a conversation with Liang Xiao. He lowered his head to type again: [Don’t know when this rain will stop. Are you bored? Let’s play a game]
Lu Ze felt that he probably didn’t want to interact with girls for a while, so why not take this opportunity to interact more with Liang Xiao? Who knows, maybe he could like guys too? Why limit himself to one gender? He had always been flexible, not stubborn, though this time he might be a bit too flexible.
Liang Xiao: [I don’t know how to play games like King of Glory]
Lu Ze thought for a moment: [Do you know how to play Fight the Landlord?]
Liang Xiao really didn’t expect Lu Ze to suggest this. He sat in McDonald’s, looking outside. The rain showed no signs of stopping.
So he said: [Yes]
Lu Ze: [Can you take a voice call?]
Liang Xiao: [Mm]
He had just taken out his earphones and put them on when Lu Ze’s voice call came through. Liang Xiao answered, and heard some noisy background sounds from the other end. After two seconds, Lu Ze said with a laugh, “The cafeteria is a bit noisy. Can you hear me?”
“Yes,” Liang Xiao said. “Your roommates don’t play Fight the Landlord?”
“I only have two roommates. One went to deliver an umbrella to a senior girl in the rain, and the other is foolishly watching the hail.”
Liang Xiao didn’t respond, and Lu Ze said, “Wait a moment, let me top up some beans first. You invite me to the game.”
After the game started, Lu Ze exclaimed in surprise: “Wow, how do you have so many beans? Did you top up?”
“Won them a long time ago,” Liang Xiao replied in a calm tone, without any intention of showing off.
Lu Ze still complimented him, “Impressive.”
As it was their first time playing together, Lu Ze wasn’t familiar with Liang Xiao’s playing style, so he asked before each move. Liang Xiao said, “Just play your own cards.”
When the opponent played two consecutive “airplanes,” Lu Ze asked, “Should you bomb or should I?”
“I’ll bomb,” Liang Xiao replied.
After Liang Xiao bombed, the opponent threw a tomato at him. He ignored it, and the opponent threw two more.
“Hey…” Lu Ze said.
Lu Ze threw tomatoes back at the opponent, who then started throwing them at Lu Ze, not even playing cards anymore.
“How did we run into an idiot right from the start?” Lu Ze said.
“We won, no need to throw anymore,” Liang Xiao said.
“Let’s switch to another player,” Lu Ze suggested.
“Mm,” Liang Xiao agreed.
“Tsk, my cards are decent, but yours are pretty bad,” Lu Ze commented.
“It’s fine, I can let you play,” Liang Xiao replied.
Lu Ze whistled softly, “Xiao-ge, are you that good?”
Liang Xiao didn’t act modest and simply responded with an “Mm.”
Lu Ze chuckled again. His voice through the phone sounded a bit different from in person. Liang Xiao listened to him laugh for half a minute, then heard a “Damn it.”
“My hand slipped,” Lu Ze couldn’t stop laughing, “The airplane has no wings…”
“I’ll bomb him, you play your pair of sevens,” Liang Xiao instructed.
Lu Ze laughed and said, “Okay.”
He kept laughing until the end of the round, making even Liang Xiao feel helpless. He asked, “Is it really that funny?”
“No, I’m not laughing at you,” Lu Ze couldn’t finish his sentence before laughing again, “I don’t know why it’s so funny… Maybe you just hit my funny bone…”
Hearing Lu Ze struggling to hold back his laughter, Liang Xiao touched his earphones and said, “It’s okay, go ahead and laugh.”
