After leaving the supermarket, Lu Ze and Liang Xiao wandered around the upper floors of the mall. While Lu Ze didn’t buy anything for himself, he picked out two suitable autumn outfits for Liang Xiao.
Liang Xiao enjoyed the feeling of being completely taken care of by his boyfriend but still stopped Lu Ze from entering another store.
“Baby, Ze-ge, I really have enough clothes,” Liang Xiao said, holding up both hands for emphasis. “Do I look like I have three heads and six arms? Autumn is short—it’ll be over before I even get a chance to wear them.”
“Tsk, fine,” Lu Ze reluctantly restrained his shopping impulse. “We’ll buy more next year. You look great in autumn clothes.”
“Is there anything I don’t look good in, according to you?” Liang Xiao teased.
“Oh please,” Lu Ze laughed as he slung an arm over Liang Xiao’s shoulder. “With my love-struck filter this thick, even if you wore a burlap sack, you’d look amazing.”
Liang Xiao turned his head slightly, catching Lu Ze’s breath on his cheek. He asked earnestly, “Baby, are you planning to become a teacher in the future?”
Lu Ze froze for several seconds. “Why are you asking this all of a sudden? You’ve got me confused—do you want me to be a teacher?”
Liang Xiao chuckled. “Not necessarily—I just think you’d make a great teacher.”
“Me? A teacher?” Lu Ze pointed at himself in disbelief, his expression practically screaming, Are you joking?
Nodding, Liang Xiao grabbed Lu Ze’s finger and gave it a gentle squeeze. “You praise me 800 times a day—no matter what I do, it’s like having a kindergarten teacher around. ‘Little Liang Xiao’s outfit looks great today,’ ‘Little Liang Xiao’s hands are so clean,’ ‘Little Liang Xiao ate so well today.’”
Liang Xiao deliberately mimicked the soft tone of a kindergarten teacher, making Lu Ze laugh so hard he nearly collapsed onto him, unable to walk.
After laughing until his face hurt, Lu Ze rubbed his cheeks and said, “Am I really that over-the-top? You’re so amazing—how can I not praise you?”
Liang Xiao sighed lightly. “You praise me so much it makes me feel guilty.”
Lu Ze hooked his arm around Liang Xiao’s neck and playfully shook him. “What guilt? No guilt allowed! For us love-struck boyfriends, our partners are the best in the world. Hold your chest high!”
When Liang Xiao didn’t respond immediately, Lu Ze narrowed his eyes suspiciously. “What’s that? Do you not think I’m the best in the world?”
“I do,” Liang Xiao replied with a smile. “You’re the best in the world.”
“There we go.” Lu Ze snapped his fingers near Liang Xiao’s ear. “Let me tell you something, Xiao-ge: Before my dad met my mom, he had never cooked before—he couldn’t even tell salt from MSG. But after meeting her, he started learning how to cook. At first, his food was awful, but my mom always supported him and finished every dish he made. Now look at him—he’s practically a master chef! Most of what I know about cooking comes from him.”
Turning to look at Liang Xiao with raised eyebrows, Lu Ze said, “Alright, Little Liang Xiao—summarize the lesson here.”
Looking at his boyfriend’s face so close to his own, Liang Xiao replied, “Even if it’s bad, you should still give praise.”
“Exactly!” Lu Ze said triumphantly. “The more praise, the better! And someone like you who’s already amazing will just get better and better.”
Liang Xiao stared at him for a moment before lowering his voice and saying softly, “Baby.”
“Hmm?” Lu Ze responded lazily.
“I want to kiss you.”
“Mm?” Lu Ze’s voice rose slightly in pitch.
Because his boyfriend said he wanted to kiss him, Lu Ze decided to immediately hail a cab and head home.
However, this time they couldn’t embrace and kiss right at the door—both of them had their hands full of plastic bags, their fingers nearly numb from the weight.
Liang Xiao first set down the groceries he was carrying, placed the clothes on the sofa, and then carefully took the eggs and tofu from Lu Ze’s hands to put them in the fridge.
Lu Ze placed the remaining bags on the floor and crouched down to sort them. When Liang Xiao returned, Lu Ze handed him two bags. “Put the chicken in the kitchen—we’ll eat it tonight. The pork goes in the freezer.”
“Are we eating mushrooms? If not, put them away for now.”
“Let’s just do two dishes and a soup tonight. If we make too much, we won’t finish it.”
“Chill the lychees and canned fruit for a couple of hours before eating.”
Once everything they bought was sorted and stored, Lu Ze stood up and stretched. In that moment, he suddenly realized that he and Liang Xiao weren’t just dating anymore.
They were living together.
They had a cozy little home. On their days off, they went grocery shopping to fill the fridge. Returning home, they couldn’t kiss right away because their hands were full of eggs and tofu that might break.
Lu Ze smiled slightly. He was only twenty years old, yet here he was already learning how to live a domestic life. At twenty, his dad was probably still out fighting battles.
“What are you smiling about?” Liang Xiao asked as he walked over.
Lu Ze opened his arms. “Come hug me—didn’t you say you wanted to kiss me?”
Liang Xiao hugged him and gave him a light kiss on the lips. Lu Ze teased, “That’s so reserved.”
“My hands got dirty earlier—let me wash them first,” Liang Xiao said.
As soon as Liang Xiao stepped into the bathroom, Lu Ze followed right behind him and hugged him from behind. “Don’t wash the back of your hands—just wash your palms.”
“Mm.”
Liang Xiao turned on the faucet, letting the water run fast as he quickly washed his hands. As soon as he finished, he turned around and hugged Lu Ze tightly.
“You’re using my clothes as a towel now?” Lu Ze said.
Before he could finish speaking, Liang Xiao kissed him.
Lu Ze let himself be pushed back two steps until his back hit the tiled wall behind him.
Liang Xiao sucked lightly on his lower lip and said in a husky voice, “Baby, I really like you.”
Here we go again.
Lu Ze could clearly feel his heartbeat racing against Liang Xiao’s—was domestic life supposed to be this exciting?
He raised his hand to touch Liang Xiao’s face and replied, “I really like you too—a lot.”
The next second, Liang Xiao sealed his lips with another kiss.
Lu Ze closed his eyes. At this moment, he could not only feel Liang Xiao’s quickened heartbeat but also sense his emotions—so full they were about to overflow.
Gently squeezing the back of Liang Xiao’s neck to comfort him, Lu Ze asked softly during a brief pause for breath, “Xiao-ge, what do you want to say?”
Liang Xiao’s breath was warm as he tightly held Lu Ze’s waist, his damp palms warming from cold to hot, and his blood coursing rapidly through his body.
He brushed his nose against Lu Ze’s and kissed him lightly on the lips, then again.
“Baby,” Liang Xiao said.
Lu Ze instinctively held his breath, feeling that Liang Xiao was about to say something very important.
“I think I’m already in love with you,” Liang Xiao said in a low voice.
One second, two seconds, three seconds passed.
Lu Ze froze as if rooted in place, unable to react.
Liang Xiao raised a hand to caress Lu Ze’s face and said with a slightly commanding tone, “Don’t think it’s too soon, okay?”
Lu Ze blinked slowly.
The word love had never been mentioned in any of his previous relationships—not even as a joke. Perhaps influenced by his parents, Lu Jinglang and Xu Jingjing, Lu Ze had always known that love was something precious—something that shouldn’t be spoken lightly unless it was truly felt.
At this moment, looking into Liang Xiao’s eyes, Lu Ze heard himself say, “Too soon? I’m already in love with you too.”
Before Liang Xiao could respond, Lu Ze cupped the back of his neck and kissed him again.
This is love, Lu Ze thought.
The feeling of living an ordinary life with Liang Xiao yet still being moved by a single sentence from him—this must be love.
To be twenty years old and already living with someone he loves—Lu Ze couldn’t help but think he was pretty amazing.
