Mo Lin's Joy

Prologue

According to the contract made five years ago, today was the day Mo Lin and Jiang Yuanmu had to sign the divorce agreement.

Mo Lin put on her formal attire, applied light makeup, and brought the divorce agreement documents to the café below Jiang Yuanmu’s office building.

Mo Lin sat by the window and ordered a latte. She glanced at her phone; it was exactly six o’clock. Although it was peak time for getting off work, few were going home directly. Many people hurriedly bought a cup of coffee and went back to work overtime.

In the tech startup park, there were always young people with bad complexions, poor spirits and hidden anxiety.

Mo Lin sat down, opened her clean and tidy document bag, took out the divorce agreement documents, and made one last final check.

She looked at the document in her hand, her thumb rubbing the paper, and a faint smile appeared on her lips, a smile that could only be called one thing—joy.

The barista who brought the latte accidentally glanced at the title on the paper. His hand froze slightly, and he looked at Mo Lin with sympathy, but was surprised to see an inexplicable smile on her face…

Barista: “…”

This customer seems to have quite a story.

The barista quietly left while Mo Lin continued to carefully review the document.

In addition to the divorce agreement, there was also a confirmation contract terminating their partnership. This contract corresponded to the prenuptial agreement they had signed five years ago…

After confirming the document, Mo Lin neatly placed it on the table. She took a sip of coffee, absorbing the café’s lights and music. The aroma of coffee beans filled her nose, and it made her recall the first time she and Jiang Yuanmu met at this café five years ago, at this very spot.

At that time, Mo Lin defined their interaction as—having a tacit understanding.

She and Jiang Yuanmu met on a blind date.

Mo Lin had her own jewelry studio, selling jewelry she designed and made herself. One of her regular customers was Jiang Yuanmu’s aunt.

The aunt thought they were a good match and introduced them to each other.

Mo Lin originally thought that blind dates had a very low success rate and were meaningless, but at that time, her grandmother was seriously ill and was earnestly hoping for her to settle down. Mo Lin hurriedly went on a few blind dates. Each time, after the date, the suitors would not only block her, but also the matchmakers.

At first, Mo Lin went on the blind date, expecting to lose a regular customer, because of her failed love affairs.

Unexpectedly, the aunt had a keen eye, and they indeed turned out to be quite suitable for each other.

Mo Lin still remembered the first time she met Jiang Yuanmu. He got straight to the point and said: “I don’t want to waste time, so I hope our conversation will be efficient and productive.”

Straightforward, direct, and efficient—he was someone who got things done.

Mo Lin immediately smiled.

“Alright, have you read the information about my age, income, family background, and job details on your way here?”

Jiang Yuanmu raised an eyebrow, looked at Mo Lin, and sized her up as if he had just noticed her for the first time.

After a moment, Jiang Yuanmu nodded:

“I’ve read it. Mo Lin, 25 years old, graduated from art school, lived with her grandparents since childhood, and now runs her own custom jewelry studio.” Jiang Yuanmu affirmed, “Very impressive.”

Mo Lin nodded, confirming the information.

“I’ve also read your profile. 26 years old, graduated from a top university with a master’s degree, from a well-off family, currently in the startup phase.” Mo Lin looked at him calmly, like an interviewer assessing a candidate, “You have a good appearance, and your family background is excellent. It’s really strange. Why would someone like you need to go on a blind date?”

“I’m not close with my family, and I need to get married as soon as possible” Jiang Yuanmu said. “A marriage will make me appear more mature and responsible, which will help my business. But finding a partner who meets my requirements is hard.” Jiang Yuanmu looked at Mo Lin. Mo Lin simply nodded in understanding, without commenting. Jiang Yuanmu was very satisfied, “What about you? What’s your reason for blind dating?”

“My grandmother is seriously ill, and she hopes to see me married before she passes away,” Mo Lin said. “To be honest, finding someone who meets my partner requirements is also rare. I have no emotional need for a marriage, and similarly, I don’t want my partner to want anything from me .”

“What a coincidence, me too.”

Mo Lin was very satisfied. “I think we are very suitable for each other. You should consider marrying me.”

“No need to consider,” Jiang Yuanmu stood up and extended his hand to Mo Lin. “You are the most outstanding blind date I’ve ever had.”

“An honor.” Mo Lin also extended her hand, and they shook hands across the table as if in a business meeting. “You too.”

They looked into each other’s eyes, both smiling with satisfaction.

Even after so many years, when Mo Lin recalled their first meeting, she found the picture to be harmonious and beautiful.

Mo Lin believed that the best modern marital relationship couldn’t be better than theirs.

After that, they quickly signed the marriage agreement. Besides the identification of premarital property, they reached an astonishing consensus on all aspects of their future marriage, from significant matters like life and death and the fate of the nation, to medium matters like the funerals and weddings of friends and relatives, to small matters like daily meals and washing dishes.

Now that the five-year contract has expired, Mo Lin could look back and still rate Jiang Yuanmu as a five-star husband.

But a contract is just a contract and every contract must come to an end one day. Although it’s not entirely satisfactory, ending it at this point and wishing each other well for the future is also a beautiful choice.

Mo Lin touched the documents on the table, then took out her phone and called Jiang Yuanmu. After a series of busy tones, no one answered on the other end.

Jiang Yuanmu was very busy, very, very busy.

Mo Lin had always understood this, so she tried to call his assistant: “Hello, Assistant Li, is Yuanmu in a meeting?”

“Yuanmu” was the name they agreed Mo Lin would call him in front of others, as per their prenuptial agreement.

“Yes, yes, Sister Mo Lin, the boss is still in a meeting. It should take another ten minutes or so.”
“Then when he comes out, could you please tell him that I’m at the café at your office building? I have a divorce agreement that needs his signature.”

There was a sudden silence on the other end of the line…

Mo Lin was puzzled, “Hello?”

“Oh? Oh… oh…” Assistant Li stammered, “Okay… okay.”

“Thank you, Assistant Li.”

Mo Lin hung up the phone and leisurely looked at the various people outside the café.

Today should be a smooth and pleasant day.

Just like their marriage in the past five years.
