As the night deepened, Lin Yu rubbed his eyes, his slender wrist resting on the lounge chair.

“Sleepy?”

“Mm…”

Lu Ziqing supported Lin Yu’s knees and lifted him into his arms. He was so light—skin and bones, barely any weight at all—like carrying a thin blanket. Erly tomorrow morning, he was definitely going to complain to Auntie, he thought. Let’s see if Lin Yu still dares to eat so little.

The fireworks had faded, marking the final night of the year. The bright moon hung high in the sky, with no wind, no snow.

By the time they returned inside, everyone else was already asleep.

Lin Yu was tucked into the warm blankets, his feet resting against a toasty bed warmer. In his drowsy state, he felt something cool against his neck.

“…What is it?”

“A gift for you.”

“A necklace…?” His fingers twitched, trying to touch it, but he was too sleepy to even open his eyes.

“It’s okay, take a look in the morning. No rush.” Lu Ziqing bent down and pressed a kiss to his forehead. “Go to sleep.”

It was a simple, old-fashioned gold necklace, unpolished and rustic. The pendant was a heart woven from fine gold threads. It had once belonged to his grandmother, who had passed it to his mother when she got married. Later, his mother had placed it in his hands, telling him to give it to the one he loved.

Lin Yu obediently closed his eyes. Ever since Lu Ziqing started his own jewelry studio, he often had Lin Yu try on his new designs and give feedback.  Lin Yu was already used to it.

Lu Ziqing turned off the light and slipped under the covers.

The room was dark and silent, with only a sliver of moonlight filtering through the window, pure as snow.

“Good night, baby,” he whispered, intertwining their fingers tightly from behind. “Happy New Year.”
