MAC’60s Chapter 43.1

The things Li Chunjuan brought looked like a big bundle, but in reality, there wasn’t much of real value inside. This was already her third time coming to see Wang Lingling—the first two times, she hadn’t found her at home.

As soon as Wang Lingling opened the bundle, she got angry. She kicked it hard, scattering all the green wild vegetables inside across the floor.

“Aiyo, girl, what are you doing? It wasn’t easy for mom to find—”

Wang Lingling bit her lower lip. “And here I thought you were sincerely coming to see me. You bring a sack full of wild vegetables? Am I even your real daughter?!”

Wang Lingling had never been someone who liked hard work. Though she had been trying to take on the role of a stepmother with the mindset of building a better life, and had stirred up a fuss to split from the family and live independently, it wasn’t without its hardships. All these grievances had piled up inside her, leaving her especially irritable and anxious.

When she first saw Li Chunjuan arriving with large and small bags, looking submissive, Wang Lingling had thought she truly came to make peace.

She hadn’t forgotten how, back when she said she wanted to marry Zhao Jun, Wang Yongshun and Li Chunjuan had scolded her right to her face. But after thinking things over just now, she realized she could really use a helping hand, and Li Chunjuan had shown up at just the right time.

She even wanted the things Li Chunjuan brought, so she had put on a friendly face. But the moment she opened the bag and saw it was full of worthless wild vegetables, her anger boiled over.

Wang Lingling snapped, “Just leave! Don’t come again. I’m doing just fine on my own—I don’t need your fake kindness.”

Li Chunjuan’s hands froze as she was picking up the scattered vegetables. She slowly turned her head, clicking her tongue in disbelief, her face full of shock.

It was only now that she realized what kind of person she had raised. When Wang Lingling had caused trouble before, one could chalk it up to her rashness over marrying Zhao Jun. But now, even after she came bearing gifts and smiles, this girl dared to speak to her like that!

Li Chunjuan was truly heartbroken and furious. Though she hadn’t treated her two daughters with the same indulgence she gave her son, she had still raised them well over the years.

All her effort—was this the result?

Li Chunjuan said bitterly, “Fine, fine. Now that your mother’s family has fallen on hard times, you’re disgusted with us, huh?”

These days, just thinking about the past made Li Chunjuan miserable. This time last year, her life had been so good—Wang Ying was doing all the housework, her son was studying in town, and she had dozens of yuan in hand. In just half a year, the family had fallen so far that no one wanted anything to do with them—they were being avoided by everyone.

Wiping her tears, Li Chunjuan complained, “I won’t even talk about your older sister. Ever since you got married, I’ve always been thinking of you and wanting to visit. But with one thing after another happening at home, I couldn’t spare the time.”

Li Chunjuan was boiling inside, but on the surface, she still had to act agreeable with her daughter.

Wang Yongshun had told her that their family was being bullied now because they had no one to rely on, so even if Wang Lingling said unpleasant things, she had to endure it and keep a low profile.

Sure enough, when Li Chunjuan said this, Wang Lingling furrowed her brows.

Wang Lingling truly didn’t understand—what could have possibly happened to the family? In her previous life, she had married Xu Shuang. Life wasn’t great, but at least in the countryside, they never had to worry about food or clothing.

Her maternal family had been doing decently too—her younger brother Wang Yaozong graduated that year and went to the city to work in a factory, which was a rare example of someone escaping the fate of a farmer.

Wang Lingling, thinking this over, started to doubt Li Chunjuan’s claim that “life hasn’t been easy.”

What did she mean by that—more like she just didn’t want to spend money on her!

Thinking back to her previous life, after she’d raised a fuss about divorcing Xu Shuang and wanted to go south to seek new opportunities, she’d asked her family for money. But Li Chunjuan had clutched that money tightly and refused to give it up, acting miserly as always. The anger in Wang Lingling’s heart surged again.

“You think I’m stupid?! Last year you were still trying to pull strings for Wang Yaozong in the city—how could you have no money? Get lost! If you look down on me, then don’t bother coming!”

Before Li Chunjuan could even finish repeating the lines Wang Yongshun had told her to say, she was driven out by Wang Lingling, and the basket of wild vegetables was thrown out after her.

Wang Lingling was a stubborn person—once she made up her mind, it was hard to change it. Now that she believed Li Chunjuan had come with nothing but wild greens as a sign of disdain, of course she wouldn’t be pleasant.

Who needed that?

All Wang Lingling could think about now was money, money, money. As for her birth parents or her in-laws—they could all get lost!

Wang Lingling’s good life—no one else was going to get a share of it!

Li Chunjuan, thrown out by Wang Lingling, wasn’t exactly bright to begin with, and her anger got the better of her. She ended up getting into a full-blown shouting match with Wang Lingling.

Wang Lingling, sharp-tongued, snapped back: “Didn’t you say back when I got married that I wasn’t allowed to come home anymore? That I was no longer your daughter? Now what, crawling back here for what? You used to say sons were the real roots of the family—then go live your life with Wang Yaozong. What are you doing here? Oh, you’ve got snot dripping into your mouth now and finally want to wipe it—trying to come crawling back? You’ve got bad intentions, obviously!”

Li Chunjuan was absolutely livid. If it weren’t for problems at home forcing her hand, she never would’ve come to see this second daughter again!

It was all because she had lost the marriage arrangement with Xu Shuang that her family’s reputation was completely ruined in the brigade. If it hadn’t been for her acting out, she and Xu Shuang could’ve been living peacefully together. Her family wouldn’t have had to steal chickens in the winter just to get a bite of meat. And now they’d ended up in this sorry state.

In short—everything was Wang Lingling’s fault!

Li Chunjuan put her hands on her hips and shouted, “You wretched girl! If I’d known you’d turn out like this, I should’ve drowned you in the slop bucket the moment you were born. You wanted to play the fool and be someone’s stepmother—and now you think you’re high and mighty?! Wang Lingling, I’m telling you, you’ll get what’s coming to you one day!”

Wang Lingling was seething. She could tolerate a lot, but being a stepmother was her sore spot. If Zhao Dong brought it up, she could hold her tongue. But if anyone else mentioned it, she would explode.

Looking left and right, Wang Lingling grabbed a broom and started chasing her mother out.

“I’m such a piece of trash? Then don’t come to my door! Who needs a mother like you? Get out! Don’t ever come back again!”

The mother and daughter shouting match drew a crowd of commune members, and everyone couldn’t help clicking their tongues.

“My God, the Zhao family’s third daughter-in-law has one hell of a temper. That’s her own birth mother, and she doesn’t give her any face.”

“Exactly. She’s something else—first she fought with the Zhao matriarch and split off the household, and now she’s cutting off her own family. She really plans to close her doors and live on her own.”

“Tsk, what’s this woman thinking? Raising two kids that aren’t even hers, refusing help from anyone, doing everything herself—it’s not even her own flesh and blood.”

“Well, who knows? She’s always hugging those two kids like they’re treasures… I’ve never seen anyone so soft in the head.”

The people of the Fourth Production Team of Hongxing Commune were all shaking their heads in disbelief. Although Wang Lingling had only been married in for half a year, she had already given the village plenty to gossip about. No one could figure out what this new daughter-in-law was trying to do. If she was after the Zhao family’s property, she had split off from them right after marrying in. If she was after Zhao Jun, he wasn’t even around. If she was trying to live a better life, she was treating those two kids—who weren’t even hers—like precious gems. Nobody could tell what strange thoughts were in her head.

After taking a few whacks with the broom and completely falling out with Wang Lingling, Li Chunjuan went home and immediately grabbed the gourd ladle to glug down water in anger. Even after she threw it aside, she was still fuming.

She complained to Wang Yongshun, “And you said we should try to get close to Wang Lingling. That damn girl doesn’t want anything to do with us now. She just split off from the family, so of course she’s feeling bold.”

She told Wang Yongshun everything that had happened—how Wang Lingling had kicked her out and what she had said—and for the first time, she began to doubt his advice.

“That idea of yours didn’t work at all. That girl’s cold-blooded. Her mind’s full of those two burdens she’s raising—she doesn’t remember a thing about how we raised her.”

Wang Yongshun was troubled too. He had rarely made bad investments in his life—but this daughter had cost him dearly.

That damn girl—he had thought she was just dumb and easy to manipulate, but now he saw she wasn’t just dumb, she was stubborn.

That kind of pigheadedness—he didn’t even know who she got it from. Once she got stuck on something, there was no pulling her out of it!

Li Chunjuan hesitated. “Do you think… we should still go after her husband?”

Previously, Wang Yongshun had suggested they ruin Zhao Jun’s reputation in the military to blackmail Wang Lingling.

But Wang Lingling was like a stubborn mule—would she even listen?

Li Chunjuan had no hope left. With that daughter’s obstinate nature, if she found out her birth family was sabotaging her husband’s future, there was a high chance she’d go off the rails.

Last time, when they tried to stop her from marrying Zhao Jun, she had reported them and even ran away from home.

If they tried something now, there was no telling what crazy thing she’d do with that twisted head of hers…

Wang Yongshun puffed on his pipe. He had to admit—he had no way of dealing with Wang Lingling anymore.

He had thought she’d be able to see the situation clearly—she had split from her husband’s family, her husband was far away in the army, and she was left to raise two kids alone in his family’s production team, completely isolated. Even though she held on to the money Zhao Jun sent her, it was only a matter of time before someone came along to scam or rob her.

Reconciling with her maternal family would at least make her less of a target.

But she was dumb to the extreme, not even thinking about her own situation.

Wang Lingling had actually refused to make peace with Li Chunjuan.

Wang Yongshun slumped as he puffed on his pipe. “Forget it—for now.”

No matter how you looked at it, it just wasn’t going to work out. Wang Lingling wouldn’t listen, so what else could Wang Yongshun do?

He lay down on the bed, deeply troubled.

It was now spring. Recently, he’d finished hauling all the manure that had piled up over the winter in the production team. These past couple of days, he’d started working normally again.

Although the team leader still assigned him some heavy work, it was much better than hauling manure.

Of course, hauling manure hadn’t stopped entirely—whenever there was more, he still had to go.

Wang Yongshun tossed and turned in bed for a long time, unable to sleep.

Suddenly, he asked, “Where’s Yaozong? I haven’t seen him at all today.”

Li Chunjuan replied, “Yaozong said he went to town. A classmate was looking for him.”

Wang Yongshun was silent for a moment. “Tell Yaozong to come work in the fields with me tomorrow to earn work points. Things aren’t like they used to be anymore—just the two of us working isn’t enough.”

Both Wang Yongshun and Li Chunjuan had always been sloppy workers. In the past, they relied on embezzling the money left by Wang Ying’s mother to raise Wang Yaozong.

Now that Yaozong had dropped out of school and the money was gone, if he didn’t go to the fields, come autumn and winter they’d really be starving.

Li Chunjuan felt bad for her son, but she knew Wang Yongshun was right.

If you didn’t go to the fields, you wouldn’t earn work points. Without work points, where would food and drink come from?

Were they supposed to steal again?

After what happened last time, Li Chunjuan was completely scared off.

“Okay, I’ll talk to Yaozong tomorrow.”
