PTGWD Chapter 59: Consultation

Fang Xingzhou began experiencing prenatal anxiety.

In the afternoon, Lu Jianchuan stayed quietly in the consultation room, not going anywhere.

While Fang Xingzhou attended to patients, Lu Jianchuan sat by his side, serving tea, handing over documents, and occasionally educating the thing in his belly, urging it to start learning early and not waste the excellent human genes.

The first day of his internship passed without major incidents.

Today, Fang Xingzhou had no surgeries scheduled, so he could leave work on time. As soon as he changed out of his white coat, Lu Jianchuan reverted to his original appearance, pretending to be the spouse who had come to pick him up from work. He walked openly through the main entrance into the consultation room.

His belly, which had been restrained all day, had grown even larger, looking as if it might burst at any moment. Qin Hongbo, who had just finished packing up to leave, saw a heavily pregnant woman entering the department and exclaimed, “Oh, ma’am, our outpatient hours are over, and this is the surgical department…”

Lu Jianchuan smiled at him. “I’m here to see Dr. Fang.”

Qin Hongbo was startled to hear a deep, elegant male voice. He quickly looked up and met a face so perfect it seemed almost unreal.

A flood of outrageous rumors came to mind. Qin Hongbo stared at the man with the enormous belly, feeling his medical worldview rapidly crumbling. “You… you’re Professor Fang’s…”

Lu Jianchuan replied, “Yes, Dr. Fang and I are partners.”

Qin Hongbo instinctively turned around, looking for the intern, Xiao Wang, who had a crush on Dr. Fang.

…Strange.

He had just seen Xiao Wang head to the changing room to get dressed, but now he was nowhere to be seen. He hadn’t even said goodbye before leaving.

As Qin Hongbo pondered this, Fang Xingzhou emerged, having changed his clothes. Seeing Lu Jianchuan back to his usual self, he couldn’t help but smile.

Lu Jianchuan reached out a hand to him and said softly, “Darling, you’re finally off work.”

Qin Hongbo’s goosebumps rose from his feet to his head.

Darling?! Who was he calling that?!

He slowly turned his gaze to their famously aloof department head, Fang Xingzhou. Fang Xingzhou naturally walked over and took Lu Jianchuan’s hand, introducing him to Qin Hongbo. “This is my spouse. He’s here to pick me up from work.”

Then, with equal formality, he introduced Qin Hongbo to Lu Jianchuan. “This is Dr. Qin. He’s currently interning in our department and will soon be a full-time staff member.”

Lu Jianchuan smiled and extended his other hand. “Dr. Qin, nice to meet you.”

Qin Hongbo, still in a daze, shook his hand. “N-nice to meet you.”

Lu Jianchuan’s eyes curved into a smile. “Dr. Qin, thank you for always taking care of Zhouzhou. Once the baby is born, I’ll send you an invitation to the full moon celebration. We’ll head off now. You should leave early too.”

Qin Hongbo nodded. “Sure, I’ll definitely come…”

Lu Jianchuan and Fang Xingzhou interlocked their fingers and left the department under Qin Hongbo’s incredulous gaze.

After flaunting their relationship in front of their colleagues, Lu Jianchuan was in an exceptionally good mood today.

Before driving home, he made a detour to the morgue and pointed to one of the freezers, saying to Fang Xingzhou, “Darling, when you were breaking up with me, I didn’t dare come up to see you, so I used a corpse in this freezer to get your attention and urge you to come home early. Remember?”

Fang Xingzhou was taken aback.

His memory was excellent, and he quickly recalled the details Lu Jianchuan mentioned. He couldn’t help but click his tongue. “I remember. The morgue staff were terrified.”

Lu Jianchuan squeezed his hand. “Later, that colleague became much braver. He even opened the freezer and studied it for a long time. Now he’s the morgue director.”

Fang Xingzhou raised an eyebrow. “You even kept track of that?”

Lu Jianchuan replied, “Of course.”

At this point, he glanced at Fang Xingzhou, hesitated for a moment, and then said, “Before I got pregnant, I would drive you to work every day and then stay near the hospital, disguising myself as various people to observe how human hospitals operate. I also secretly watched you work… I would wait like this until you finished work, then pretend I had just arrived to pick you up.”

These were things Lu Jianchuan had never dared to say before.

But since revealing his non-human identity, he had gained a bit of confidence, feeling that the person beside him didn’t mind these things.

He stared at Fang Xingzhou’s face.

The latter simply chuckled softly, not angered by his spying. “You’ve been watching for so long, yet your medical knowledge hasn’t improved much.”

Lu Jianchuan: “…”

He pretended not to hear, offering a clear smile to mask his lack of expertise. “I’ll work hard during my internship. I’m determined to help our department win the ‘Best Training‘ Department award!”

Fang Xingzhou handed him the car keys, smiling. “I’ll be watching.”

Lu Jianchuan spent two months fulfilling his promise.

By the eighth week of his internship, and the thirty-sixth week of his pregnancy, Lu Jianchuan had persevered through wind and rain, diligently working to earn the title of “Best Intern of September.” Thanks to his efforts, the surgical department also became the best training department for the month.

For an ordinary human, thirty-six weeks would mean preparing for childbirth. But Lu Jianchuan’s belly, aside from growing larger, showed no signs of labor. He continued to work tirelessly on the front lines as a hospital intern.

In contrast, Fang Xingzhou began experiencing prenatal anxiety.

On the first night of autumn, Fang Xingzhou lay in bed, staring at the dark ceiling for a long time before finally sitting up. He turned on the reading light, pulled back the summer quilt covering Lu Jianchuan, and gazed at the enormous belly.

Lu Jianchuan was sound asleep, his tentacles not yet retracted, unconsciously wrapping around Fang Xingzhou’s arm and affectionately rubbing against it.

Fang Xingzhou placed a hand on Lu Jianchuan’s abdomen. The already precarious belly expanded further, the embryo inside seemingly dissatisfied with the limited space of the human womb, struggling to turn over and stretching the skin to the point of transparency, as if it might split open at any moment.

Fang Xingzhou frowned, watching for a while before quietly leaning down, pressing his lips to the warm skin, and whispering, “Baby, when are you going to be born?”

The embryo, whether it didn’t understand or was pretending not to, simply nuzzled against his palm through the thin layer of skin, silently staring back at him.

Fang Xingzhou sighed.

He quietly got out of bed, went downstairs to the kitchen, and brought back two large pieces of raw beef and a pot of leftover stewed ribs from dinner, placing them on the side of the bed near Lu Jianchuan.

Sure enough, within five seconds, the tentacles, still attached to the sleeping man, couldn’t resist the temptation. They slithered away from his arm, following the scent, and quickly found the food.

First, they coiled around the beef, all their mouths opening wide, sharp teeth spinning rapidly like a meat grinder, devouring the beef in a whirlwind. Then, they meticulously licked up every drop of blood and shred of meat.

The pot of ribs, being soup-based, was a bit messier to eat. But with Fang Xingzhou watching, the tentacles maintained their gentlemanly demeanor, not making too much of a mess. They first dipped their tips into the soup, sucking it dry, then bit into the ribs, crunching through meat and bone with ease, swallowing everything whole.

The midnight snack was gone in the blink of an eye. The tentacles, now full, tried to wrap around Fang Xingzhou again, but he gently pushed them away.

The tentacles paused, surprised by the rejection, and hovered in the air, watching as Fang Xingzhou went into the bathroom. Moments later, he returned with a towel and a toothbrush.

He picked up the well-fed tentacle, carefully wiped its surface clean, and then brushed every tooth in its mouths, making it drink two large glasses of water before guiding it to the sink to rinse out the toothpaste.

Only after every nook and cranny of the tentacle was spotless did it finally get permission to climb onto Fang Xingzhou’s shoulders, wrapping around his neck like a scarf, its soft tip affectionately nuzzling his cheek.

“Is the prey from the last hunting trip almost gone?” Fang Xingzhou asked the tentacle. “Your appetite seems to be getting bigger lately.”

If Lu Jianchuan had been awake, he would have vehemently denied this, not wanting his beloved to think he was too much of a glutton.

But now, he was fast asleep, and the tentacles operated purely on instinct, essentially reflecting his subconscious.

The tentacle nodded, opening its mouths to reveal its hungry throat.

Fang Xingzhou stroked its suckers and whispered, so softly that only they could hear, “Returning to your complete form would be better for both you and the baby.”

The tentacle tilted its head, seemingly not understanding.

Fang Xingzhou added, “I can bring back special provisions for you to eat.”

At the mention of “special provisions,” the tentacle squirmed, its mouths visibly secreting digestive fluids that glistened under the reading light, like countless eyes staring at Fang Xingzhou with longing.

Fang Xingzhou added, “It’ll be even tastier than the eggs last time.”

The tentacle froze for a long moment, then quickly retreated from his body, writhing in agony on the bed, twisting and turning for several minutes before finally disappearing, transforming back into a human hand as a sign of refusal.

Fang Xingzhou: “…”

He glanced again at the belly, which looked ready to burst, and lay back down with a sigh, feeling uneasy. It wasn’t until the early hours of the morning that he finally drifted off to sleep.

Just as he was teetering on the edge of a nightmare… his phone on the bedside table buzzed.

Fang Xingzhou sat up in a flash, quickly silencing the phone. He glanced at the caller ID—it was a colleague from the hospital.

He turned to look at Lu Jianchuan, who was still sound asleep, not even having shifted positions. He quietly answered the call, covering the microphone. “Hello?”

The voice on the other end spoke rapidly. “Dr. Fang, we have a critically ill emergency patient who needs a consultation! Please come back to the hospital immediately.”

Fang Xingzhou frowned. A late-night consultation, and even the surgical department was being called in? Another major car accident?

He kept his voice low. “Send me the details. I’ll take a look beforehand.”

“Okay,” the colleague said. “Come as soon as possible! The patient’s condition is extremely critical!”

The call ended. Fang Xingzhou opened the department group chat and had just read a couple of messages when two tentacles wrapped around his waist from behind.

He turned to see Lu Jianchuan, who had woken up at some point, struggling to move his massive belly closer. Sleepily, he asked, “What’s wrong?”

Fang Xingzhou leaned down to kiss his forehead and whispered, “Nothing. I might need to go back to the hospital for a consultation. Go back to sleep.”

Lu Jianchuan was instantly awake.

He glanced at the clock—1:30 a.m.

“It’s so late. I don’t feel safe letting you drive alone,” he said. “Let’s go together.”

Fang Xingzhou looked at the bloodshot eyes and the cumbersome belly, then took hold of the tentacles, giving them a gentle squeeze. He casually offered an excuse. “When I get back tomorrow morning, I’d like some freshly cooked millet porridge.”

Lu Jianchuan was taken aback.

“Stay home and make the porridge for me, okay?” Fang Xingzhou said. “My stomach hasn’t been feeling well lately. I’ll probably have a stomachache after the consultation.”

Lu Jianchuan, still groggy from sleep, felt a pang of concern at the mention of a stomachache. He wrapped his tentacles around Fang Xingzhou’s wrist. “Alright. Darling, drive carefully.”

Fang Xingzhou agreed, quickly threw on some clothes, and nodded along with Lu Jianchuan’s endless stream of reminders. He grabbed the car keys, silenced his spouse with a kiss, and left the bedroom. As he walked to the parking lot, he scrolled through the department group chat, reading the ongoing discussion.

The doctors on night shift had sent numerous voice messages. The first one, sent at 12:30 a.m., was from the emergency room doctor.

Fang Xingzhou clicked on the voice message and heard the doctor’s exasperated voice:

“Damn, I just admitted a really weird patient. I seriously suspect he’s on drugs. His mental state is incredibly strange. Should we call the police?”

Half an hour later, the emergency room sent another message: “Oh no, the patient just started vomiting blood! We still can’t figure out the cause! I can’t handle this! Are there any internal medicine or surgical doctors around? I think we need a consultation!”

The surgical department’s night shift was covered by Qin Hongbo: “He’s vomiting blood? Why do you need a surgical consultation?”

Ten minutes later, Qin Hongbo: “I think we need to call Dr. Fang back. I don’t dare handle this! @Xiao Le, give Dr. Fang a call.”

A nurse replied: “I called him. He’s on his way. What’s wrong with the patient? I heard the consultation announcement. Was it a car accident?”

Fang Xingzhou directly called Qin Hongbo.

The line was filled with noise—familiar colleagues talking over each other, mixed with the beeping of medical equipment. He raised his voice and asked, “What’s the patient’s condition?”

After a few seconds, Qin Hongbo, who had presumably stepped outside the ward, replied anxiously, “This patient is really strange. The family said he ate some toxic seafood, started hallucinating, ran around wildly at home, and eventually jumped from the second floor, seriously injuring himself.”

“When he arrived at the ER, his arms and legs were broken, but he was still thrashing around like a rabid dog, trying to bite anyone who came near. The ER doctor suspected drug use, so we ran a blood test, but everything came back normal—no drugs, no toxins, not even acute gastroenteritis. Two minutes after the tests, the patient started vomiting blood again, screaming that he was thirsty and needed water. After vomiting, he drank two liters of water, and now his vital signs are critically unstable…”

Fang Xingzhou stepped on the gas, speeding toward the hospital.

“I’ll be there soon,” he said. “Fifteen minutes.”

Qin Hongbo replied, “Okay, drive safely!”

Fang Xingzhou hung up.

Various possible diagnoses swirled in his mind as he raced to the consultation room. At 2 a.m., the consultation room was as lively as a marketplace.

Seven or eight people surrounded the hospital bed, struggling to restrain a middle-aged man covered in blood but possessing inhuman strength. They were trying to fasten restraints and a bite guard. The patient’s family members were crying nearby, pleading, “Dad, snap out of it! We’re at the hospital now!”

As soon as Fang Xingzhou appeared, the internal medicine department head called out to him, looking worried. “We still haven’t found the cause. This is really bizarre. Fang, come take a look. Can we operate on him in this condition?”

Fang Xingzhou approached the bed, took the medical records from the department head, but didn’t start reading immediately. Instead, he observed the patient’s condition.

As he looked down, he locked eyes with the patient’s bloodshot, murky gaze.

The moment their eyes met, the patient, who had been thrashing wildly, suddenly went still. His eyes fixed on Fang Xingzhou, and his throat emitted a gurgling sound. Slowly, his lips twisted into a smile, revealing blood-stained teeth.
