There’s always a reason behind how a person turns out.
Yan Yixuan figured he became who he is today simply because he was born into the Yan family.
The Yan family is a rigid bunch. Names have to follow the generational characters in the family records. Even the illegitimate kids born outside are forced to have a ‘Yi’ in their Chinese names.
The only one who ever broke this rule was Yan Yixuan’s rebellious uncle.
And that brings us back to the kind of people the Yans are.
They may each have their quirks, but one thing they all have in common? Stubborn as hell and never listen to reason.
So the whole family is always butting heads over something or another—especially when Yan Jisheng’s iron-fisted ways clashed with his eldest son’s rebellious little clan. Things escalated and escalated… until it was practically a full-on family civil war.
Yan Yixuan grew up right in the middle of that mess.
His cousin, who was around the same age, had a big personality and never held back. That made Yan Yixuan a bit self-conscious. He couldn’t bring himself to act that boldly, so he started learning to bottle things up.
Then, after a string of disasters—both natural and man-made—he lost his parents, and any hope of being carefree went out the window.
After that, he ended up living with his grandfather. He had to learn to live with the old man’s bossy and controlling ways. If he’d tried to fight back too, life would’ve been unbearable.
Yan Jisheng seemed fine with having a soft-tempered grandson—until Yan Yili showed up.
Yan Yili had his nose in the air and fit the Yan family mold even better than Yan Yixuan did. He immediately became Grandpa’s favorite.
That stung Yan Yixuan, but by then his gentle nature was already set in stone. He couldn’t bring himself to confront his grandpa outright, so all he could do was secretly throw jabs at this new ‘big brother’ from out of nowhere.
Looking back, Yan Yixuan figured all that twisted, tangled mess in his personality probably started from that point on.
When he got older, he had nowhere to put all those bottled-up feelings, so he poured them into dating sims—flirting his way around just to cover up the soft side he didn’t know what to do with.
He started managing the family business, while also secretly going head-to-head with Yan Yili. It wasn’t exactly what you’d call a fun or fulfilling life.
Then one day, out of nowhere, his soft heart kicked in and he picked up a broke kid off the street.
After that, he couldn’t help himself. His curiosity got the better of him, and before long he was paying attention to that young man in every possible way.
He watched as that penniless nobody slowly climbed his way up until people started calling him ‘Boss Ji.’
Looking back at his relationship with Ji Ling, Yan Yixuan couldn’t help but wonder—he’d only meant to casually take care of him at first, so how did he end up falling in too deep?
From the very beginning, there was something about Ji Ling that drew Yan Yixuan in—he couldn’t explain it, but the pull was real.
Ji Ling had this unshakable confidence. He never once asked Yan Yixuan how he felt or where they stood, like he was so sure of his own charm that he’d already won. And that smugness? It seriously got on Yan Yixuan’s nerves.
But the truth was, he really did have him wrapped around his finger.
Sometimes, Yan Yixuan would ask himself—what was it about this kid that hooked him?
Ji Ling actually had a strong personality too—once he made up his mind, there was no talking him out of it. But unlike the Yans, who were just plain stubborn, Ji Ling actually knew how to reflect on himself.
Yan Yixuan could tell that whenever they had friction, Ji Ling would always adjust his approach a little. He played the role of the guide between the two of them, gently steering things toward a better, healthier place—until their relationship naturally settled into what it was now.
And honestly, it felt… nice.
Yan Yixuan figured maybe it was because he grew up sheltered in Jin Garden—he was used to being spoiled. Having someone so thoughtful and caring by his side just hit differently. It felt… warm.
That’s probably why he kept letting Ji Ling push the limits, over and over again.
In the beginning, it was Yan Yixuan who slipped first, letting himself fall into Ji Ling’s pace. And once the door opened, Ji Ling didn’t stop—before he knew it, the guy was boldly announcing he’d never play the ‘bottom’ in their relationship.
The way he said it—so bold, so shameless—really made you wanna punch him in the face.
But also… it was kind of cute.
And there was something else—something even Ji Ling himself probably didn’t realize.
He was the kind of person who just… glowed. A natural spotlight, always pulling people in. Whether it was coworkers or friends, people just liked being around him.
Sometimes, Yan Yixuan couldn’t help wondering… besides those coworkers and friends, was there anyone else out there who secretly had feelings for Ji Ling?
But worrying like that was a bit too much, wasn’t it? Even if he did feel a little jealous sometimes, deep down, Yan Yixuan trusted Ji Ling.
Because from the beginning, Ji Ling had been nothing but open and honest with his feelings.
Being with him felt like peeling off all the layers that the Yan family had forced onto Yan Yixuan over the years. With Ji Ling, he was more upbeat, more confident—more himself.
Even Jin Garden seemed to get lighter, more vibrant, just from Ji Ling being around.
After Ji Ling moved in, they started remodeling the place. They tore out all that old, heavy decor and redid it in a sleek, modern style—everything tailored to Yan Yixuan’s taste. Ji Ling laughed and said all those renovations were just because he liked to show off.
Still, at least things were changing, right?
Ji Ling settled into Jin Garden like he owned the place—no awkwardness, no hesitation. Today, he was even hosting a get-together for his friends here, using his birthday as an excuse.
Except… the birthday on his ID wasn’t even today.
When called out, Ji Ling just brushed it off—said the ID was wrong.
Yan Yixuan had long gotten used to how smooth Ji Ling could be. If he said it was his birthday, then sure—why not?
So, they set up a barbecue party in Jin Garden’s courtyard.
Yan Yixuan wanted to tease Ji Ling, who was completely focused on eating, but when he saw how happy Ji Ling looked, he couldn’t help but smile.
One by one, Ji Ling’s friends arrived. Luo Tao, of course, was the first to show up—he was always the one eating and drinking with Ji Ling the most. True to form, he was the first to run over.
“We’ll meet again when fate brings us together.”
And right behind him was his older brother, Luo Teng.
The warm-hearted Young Master Luo made the atmosphere in Jin Garden feel softer and more welcoming as soon as he arrived.
Ji Ling was really something—Luo Teng from N City had come all the way to celebrate his birthday. What made it even more impressive was that Zong Jiqi also showed up.
Yan Yixuan still couldn’t understand why both Luo Teng and Zong Jiqi were so fond of Ji Ling. The relationship between Ji Ling and Zong Jiqi was even more complicated, almost closer than just friends.
For now, Yan Yixuan chalked it up to Ji Ling’s incredible ability to charm people. With Ji Ling’s wealthy friends visiting Jin Garden, Yan Yixuan naturally welcomed them all with open arms.
Finally, Ji Ling’s two beautiful employees were invited as well. Yan Yixuan was familiar with Mo Yulan, and the other woman was said to be a veteran who had been working with Ji Ling from the start. Yan Yixuan was happy to have them there too.
It was a small, intimate birthday gathering held in the garden. The lush greenery of Jin Garden made for a picturesque, shaded backdrop, and the guests couldn’t stop complimenting how beautiful it was. The playful Luo Tao even asked, “Can we shoot a movie here?”
Ji Ling immediately shut him down, “Forget it, you’ll lose out if you’re filming an action movie here.”
Everyone burst into laughter.
Though it was a barbecue, Ji Ling didn’t lift a finger. His two female subordinates were too shy to give orders, and luckily, the chefs at Jin Garden were up to the task. As the birthday star, Ji Ling just relaxed under the shade, lounging with his legs crossed, waiting for the food to come to him.
Yan Yixuan felt as though he was slowly stepping into the role of head of Jin Garden.
“Hey, come over, no need to entertain anyone, we’re all family here.” Ji Ling waved Yan Yixuan over to join him in the shade.
Ji Ling had created a little circle around him—his close friends, his trusted subordinates, like his very own little kingdom.
Now, he was inviting Yan Yixuan to join his kingdom.
Yan Yixuan smiled as he walked over, settling down next to him. As his lover, he had a place here.
TL Note: Awww… it ended way too fast! I still remember how lost I felt when it suddenly finished, and I just kept wanting more moments between Ji Ling and Young Master Yan. I’ve always loved the CEO×CEO genre, and I’d been searching for a couple with that perfect mix of strength and chemistry—until I found RRP. It gave me everything I hoped for: strong CEOs, some fierce battles, falling in love, and their journey together. I really hope you enjoyed Boss Ji and his Young Master’s journey as much as I did.
