Chapter 75 [o( ̄︶ ̄)o] PART 1

This conversation lasted for nearly two hours. By the time Zhang Yuankai and Mo Xinghui finished speaking, both felt their throats were a bit hoarse, but fortunately, they had said everything they needed to.

Gao Siyang thought for a long time before saying, “It’s very detailed. I don’t have any more questions. In the next two days, you can choose a time to retrieve the items left halfway. After that, your mission will be considered complete.”

Liu Zhongyuan responded, “Got it. Oh, by the way, Captain Gao, there’s still a lot of military supplies left at the base. We only took a small portion this time. Will there be more missions to go back?”

Gao Siyang nodded, “Yes, definitely. I hope you can continue to take on these missions. After all, things like ammunition are the easiest to run out of.”

Liu Zhongyuan asked, “How long will the supplies we brought back this time, plus the ones we left halfway, last?”

Gao Siyang replied, “If nothing unexpected happens, probably about two months.”

Two months wasn’t very long. Besides, after two months, winter would be setting in. This meant they needed to stockpile enough ammunition before winter arrived, at least two more trips to the military base to gather more supplies just in case.

And the most challenging part would be taking control of Modu (Mo City) before winter arrived.

Liu Zhongyuan asked, “Captain Gao, how’s the situation in Modu now? How many beast-shifters are left? Are there still a lot?”

They had been away for more than nine days. If the method of reducing the beast-shifter numbers had been consistently used, then by now…

Gao Siyang answered, “The numbers have decreased a lot. After all, there’s less than three months until winter. If we don’t act quickly, we might not make it in time.”

Liu Zhongyuan commented, “Moving in winter might not be a problem for the beast-shifters, but it would be much harder for the soldiers. After all, no one knows if this winter will be like previous ones.”

Others might not know, but Qin Jiulin did. This winter would be exceptionally cold. No one knew the exact reason why, but it would be freezing in this southern city.

In his previous life, during the first winter, he had stayed in beast form most of the time because his fur kept him warm. In human form, even a minute felt unbearably cold.

As for the ordinary people, unless they were naturally resistant to the cold, most of them huddled together for warmth.

Gao Siyang said, “I’m aware of that, but we can’t rush this. By the way, the number of beast-shifters near this area has dropped significantly. If you have time, you can take on a mission to clear out some of the more difficult ones.”

Qin Jiulin asked, “So soon? Dropping blood bags in the southernmost area shouldn’t affect the north at this time. Did something new happen?”

Gao Siyang sighed, “You’re sharp. Yes, this is both an opportunity and a problem. It depends on whether we can seize it.”

Liu Zhongyuan leaned in and asked, “What exactly is the problem?”

Gao Siyang turned on the projector behind him. “Take a look at these videos first. They were recorded about one kilometer south of here.”

Liu Zhongyuan and the others watched a video that was only about thirty seconds long. The main figure in the video was unmistakable; everyone could spot it immediately.

In the top left corner of the screen, a beast-shifter was slaughtering wildly. This beast-shifter had a humanoid shape but was covered in snake scales. Its limbs were thick and long, with a snake tail dragging behind it. Its hands and feet had long claws, and though its head hadn’t changed much, a snake’s tongue flicked out of its mouth intermittently, and its eyes were a cloudy yellow with vertical pupils.

It moved on all fours, using both hands and feet to kill other beast-shifters. It even used its tail. Its speed was incredible. One moment, it was in the top left corner, and within five seconds, it had killed six or seven beast-shifters and appeared in the bottom right corner of the screen.

In the last two seconds of the video, the beast-shifter glanced in their direction. No, not at them, but at the flying beast-shifter holding the recording device in the sky.

The flying beast-shifter was probably startled, as the camera became shaky, and the video ended as he fled in fear.

Gao Siyang said, “Fortunately, he reacted quickly and flew upward immediately. Otherwise, that beast-shifter with its powerful jumping ability, sharp claws, and strong grip could have caught him. It can scale a ten-story building in just a few seconds.”

Liu Zhongyuan asked, “So, the reason the number of beast-shifters has decreased around here is because of this killer beast-shifter?”

Gao Siyang replied, “Exactly. But this beast-shifter is incredibly strong. Whether it’s its combat ability, speed, or strength, it’s top-tier.”

Qin Jiulin observed that this snake-like beast-shifter was indeed formidable, but he hadn’t seen it in his previous life. It must have been killed by someone else before he knew about it.

He wondered how much the person who killed this snake-like beast-shifter had paid for it in his last life.

Liu Zhongyuan asked, “So, Captain Gao, are you asking us to kill it?”

Gao Siyang replied, “What I mean is… it would be best to kill it in advance. Although it’s been eliminating other beast-shifters, those beast-shifters aren’t really a problem for us.”

He continued, “On the other hand, this snake-like beast-shifter is our biggest problem right now. Its location is neither too close nor too far from us, and it could come this way at any time.”

Liu Zhongyuan nodded, “Keeping it around might help clear out other beast-shifters, but it’s not worth the risk. As it fights, it will only get stronger. It’s already at this level now. In time, no one may be able to defeat it.”

Qin Jiulin added, “I also agree that we should kill it as soon as possible.”

Leaving it alive would only bring disaster. Beast-shifters never regain their senses. They only grow stronger and more bloodthirsty. It was best to eliminate this powerful beast-shifter early.

Liu Zhongyuan said, “I think it’s better to kill it now, too. Otherwise, we might not be able to handle it later.”

Gao Siyang nodded, “Since you all think so…”

Liu Zhongyuan interjected, “We can take this mission, but don’t be stingy with the reward. After all, this snake-like beast-shifter is a considerable challenge for us.”

Gao Siyang sighed. The last thing he lacked was contribution points. “Don’t worry, you’ll be well compensated. But before that, bring back the rest of the military supplies you left on the road.”

Liu Zhongyuan shrugged, “Got it, got it. If there’s nothing else, we’ll be off.”

Gao Siyang hesitated for a moment before saying, “Oh, and… make sure to go back to the military base twice more. We need enough supplies to last through the winter.”

Liu Zhongyuan replied, “No problem. Since we’ve already been there once, the second and third trips won’t take as long.”

The three of them said goodbye to Gao Siyang and left the safe house. Shortly after, Qin Jiulin suddenly said, “Hey, we forgot to ask Captain Gao why he set up a safe house here. It doesn’t seem like he’s guarding against us. Could there be another danger?”

Liu Zhongyuan pondered for a moment but didn’t speak before Wu Feiyang, who was passing by, interrupted, “You don’t know?”

Liu Zhongyuan sensed something was up. He put his arm around Wu Feiyang’s shoulder. “Know what? Brother Wu, if you have any information, share it with us. What’s going on with Captain Gao?”

Wu Feiyang sighed, looked around nervously to make sure no one else was nearby, and then whispered, “I can tell you, but don’t spread it around.”

Liu Zhongyuan patted his chest. “Don’t worry, I’m not one to gossip!”

Wu Feiyang began, “Earlier, Captain Gao was working alone in his previous office. When Xia Liansheng went to get a mission from him…”

Liu Zhongyuan was shocked, “He attacked Captain Gao?!”

Wu Feiyang shook his head, “No, he didn’t. Nothing unusual happened. But Captain Gao wanted to be cautious, just in case.”

Liu Zhongyuan imagined the situation. In the office, only Gao Siyang and Xia Liansheng, a powerful mutant beast-shifter, were present. Gao Siyang, just an ordinary person, might have had a gun nearby for protection, but he wouldn’t stand a chance against a sudden attack from Xia Liansheng.

Qin Jiulin and Liu Zhongyuan exchanged glances and nodded slightly.

Liu Zhongyuan said, “Yeah, precaution is necessary. It’s too dangerous.”

Qin Jiulin added, “But I don’t think Xia Liansheng would actually make a move.”

Qi Yue, confused, asked, “What’s going on? What are you talking about?”

Qin Jiulin patted his head, “Don’t ask too much. You’ll understand when you’re older.”
