Chapter 93 【o( ̄︶ ̄)o】PART 1
Qin Jiulin, walking slightly behind the others, suddenly felt a tug on his sleeve. He instinctively looked back and unexpectedly saw Xia Liansheng.
Did Xia Liansheng want to talk to him here? Liu Zhongyuan was just a step ahead of him and could spot Xia… well, he’d already spotted him.
Upon seeing Xia Liansheng, Liu Zhongyuan immediately squeezed between the two of them, looking at Xia Liansheng suspiciously. “Do you have something to say to Jiulin?”
Xia Liansheng paused for a moment. “Just wanted to say, be careful later.”
Liu Zhongyuan replied, “Thank you, I’ll tell him. You can go now.”
Xia Liansheng narrowed his eyes slightly. He didn’t want to have any conflict with Liu Zhongyuan right now. After he moved a bit further away, Liu Zhongyuan looked at Qin Jiulin. “Be careful later, Jiulin.”
Qin Jiulin nodded. “You too.”
Everyone present had witnessed their beast form battles, so when they told each other to be careful, everyone inwardly scoffed. Weren’t they the ones who most needed such reassurances?
When they stood on the tallest building closest to the scene, they were all unnerved by the situation.
Lin Lou sighed. “So many semi-beast transformed individuals. How long will it take us to kill them all? And there are so many, if we’re surrounded, even if we are all variant beast transformed, we could probably be worn down and killed by them.”
Qin Jiulin took a deep breath. “There’s no other way. Let’s use the old, clumsy method. Start from the front edge and push forward little by little. Everyone forms a fan shape and advances. If anyone can’t hold their ground, just yell, and we’ll retreat together a certain distance. Absolutely no letting these semi-beast transformed individuals break through our lines.”
Liu Zhongyuan pondered, “Does anyone else have any good ideas?”
They all thought carefully, but no one could come up with a better plan. After all, against semi-beast transformed individuals who relied on feeding and bloodlust, driven only by slaughter, direct killing was the most effective method.
While they could kill them through sneak attacks, that only worked when the number of semi-beast transformed individuals was small and none of them possessed heightened senses. In the current situation, with semi-beast transformed individuals everywhere, that approach was clearly not applicable.
Qin Jiulin asked, “So, does everyone know what to do?”
Lin Lou replied, “Let’s just follow your method. It’s the most common, but also the most effective.”
Xia Liansheng gave Qin Jiulin a deep look. “I have no objections.”
With all three teams in agreement, they quickly took action, following the previously discussed plan. As variant beast transformed individuals, their beast forms were relatively large, so they maintained a certain distance from each other.
Liu Zhongyuan, in his massive serpent form, naturally took the center position, while Lin Lou and Xia Liansheng flanked him on either side. This was their duty and responsibility as captains.
Qin Jiulin stayed by Liu Zhongyuan’s side, helping him clear out any semi-beast transformed individuals he missed. At first, it was relatively easy, as they were at the edge and the number of semi-beast transformed individuals wasn’t high.
However, as time passed, more and more of them, drawn by the commotion and the growing scent of blood, converged on their location. Fortunately, they were still able to manage for the time being.
Initially, a large number of semi-beast transformed individuals flocked towards them, but since they hadn’t begun their formal advance, the number gradually decreased under their relentless assault.
Liu Zhongyuan raised his upper body, looking around from his vantage point. There weren’t many semi-beast transformed individuals left. After eliminating this batch, they could move forward.
Although this method might take a bit longer, it wouldn’t take too much extra time. Gao Siyang surely wouldn’t be angry with them just for a slight delay.
There was no other way. After killing a semi-beast transformed individual that was gnawing uselessly at Liu Zhongyuan’s scales, Qin Jiulin looked up into the distance.
More semi-beast transformed individuals continued to arrive, their dull, lifeless eyes fixated on everyone. They paid no attention to the corpses of their own kind littering the ground.
Their gazes were locked onto their living targets, likely attracted by the fresh and tempting scent of blood. They disdained the corpses of their own kind, only resorting to cannibalism when they couldn’t find anything more appealing.
This showed their reluctance to consume the flesh of their own kind.
The number of semi-beast transformed corpses continued to accumulate. Qin Jiulin nimbly moved around the giant serpent, killing any semi-beast transformed individual that dared to approach.
The semi-beast transformed individuals seemed endless, but thankfully, as dusk settled, their numbers began to dwindle.
After killing the last approaching semi-beast transformed individual, everyone collapsed to the ground, exhausted. Even Qin Jiulin was slightly breathless. Fortunately, he had experienced this many times in his past life and was used to it.
He adjusted his breathing and quickly recovered from his fatigue. He was fine, but the others weren’t doing as well.
Xia Liansheng was still manageable, although his limbs trembled, he could still walk. The rest, however, were sprawled on the ground, unable to even crawl.
Qi Yue and Duan Shuangshuang, in their eagle forms, circled overhead. Since there didn’t seem to be any immediate danger, they decided to rest for a while.
After an entire day of fighting, even if they still had some stamina left, the repetitive killing had made their limbs stiff, and they needed to recover.
Once they had rested, they would continue at night. They all had excellent night vision, and given the importance Gao Siyang placed on this mission, they would push through the night to clear the area as quickly as possible.
The ordinary beast transformed individuals deployed by Gao Siyang, although they hadn’t approached them, had been lying in ambush at a distance. While they hadn’t played a major role, they had eliminated the scattered hundred or so semi-beast transformed individuals that Qin Jiulin’s group had missed.
The number wasn’t large, and most of them were already injured and had wandered into the area, but it had still slightly lessened the burden on the variant beast transformed individuals.
All the ordinary beast transformed individuals were very happy. Although they were often utilized, they rarely participated in such large-scale battles, or perhaps never had, and some had never even witnessed one.
This was unavoidable. With such a large city like Modu, people constantly arrived seeking refuge, whether they were fleeing from other places or had been displaced.
Modu was seen as a place of hope, with many believing it would have military protection, safe zones, or even a base that could offer them some degree of safety.
By the time Qin Jiulin was leisurely dozing by Liu Zhongyuan’s side, everyone else had finally roused themselves. Gao Siyang had even sent people to deliver food.
Qin Jiulin and the others didn’t refuse. Food was always welcome, and it would help replenish their energy for the night’s battle.
Well-fed and rested, the variant beast transformed individuals began their second round of fighting. They fought from nightfall until the sun rose in the east, finally killing the last semi-beast transformed individual just as the sun fully emerged.
After a full day and night of fighting, everyone was exhausted, but at least they had had time to rest, eat, and even take short naps.
But after a combined total of only two hours of rest, they began fighting again.
The number of semi-beast transformed individuals here was truly staggering, especially in this location. Apart from the rear area they had already cleared, the remaining three directions were teeming with them.
Every time they pushed forward, a dense swarm of semi-beast transformed individuals would rush towards them. There wasn’t even time to dodge. Qin Jiulin saw scratch and bite marks appearing on many of the variant beast transformed individuals. Fortunately, medical personnel would come during rest periods to provide basic treatment.
It wasn’t very effective, as they would soon be fighting again. They hoped to clear this area within three or four days, but the sheer number of semi-beast transformed individuals was overwhelming.
Once this area was cleared, the remaining areas could be divided into three sections, which they could clear within a month.
The remaining time would be spent by ordinary people cleaning the battlefield. Each cleanup yielded a vast amount of supplies. Since the apocalypse had only started about six months ago, many supplies were still unexpired.
The buildings were relatively new, and many places could be inhabited after a simple cleaning. The factories were also in good condition.
If they were to acquire these resources two or three years later, the situation would be different. While expired food wouldn’t be a major issue, damaged buildings and machinery would be.
Qin Jiulin and Liu Zhongyuan ate together. The meals were, of course, quite lavish. During their time fighting here, the army had been hunting the best game outside to supplement their meals.
Others might not have noticed, but as variant beast transformed individuals, they quickly realized that the meat in these meals came from animals with a high degree of atavism.
They wondered if the army had suffered any casualties while hunting these animals.
Liu Zhongyuan briefly inquired with the soldier delivering the food. The soldier was momentarily stunned, then smiled and said, “Thanks to sufficient weaponry, there were no casualties. This is all thanks to you. Everyone wants to thank you!”
