RRMGEH Chapter 23

What About the Ring?

In the afternoon of the day they received their property certificate, the two went shopping for new sheets, comforters, sofa cushions, and all sorts of soft furnishings. After thoroughly cleaning the house, they replaced everything with their newly bought things, making the place feel brand new. It felt like moving into a new home.

Zhou Li washed the cleaning cloth and hung it on the balcony. He walked out while wiping his sweat. He pulled some candies from his pocket and handed them to Gu Changheng and said, “Here, have some.”

“Where did these come from?” Gu Changheng took the candy, unwrapped it, and put it into his mouth. It was very sweet.

Zhou Li smiled. “I secretly bought them while you weren’t looking,” and then added, “They’re our wedding candies.”

“Wedding candies?”

“Yes, today we got our marriage certificate and moved into our new house, so it counts as getting married. We need to have wedding candy,” Zhou Li replied seriously. “We won’t hold a banquet for friends, just the two of us.”

Gu Changheng asked, “Marriage certificate, new house, wedding candy—what about the ring?”

“Ah?” Zhou Li was startled and then quickly said, “I’ll go buy one now.” He grabbed his coat from the hanger and was about to go out. When he reached the door, he thought of a question. “Changheng, rings are expensive, right?”

“A cheap one is at least a few thousand. If you want a better one, it’s tens of thousands. If it’s too cheap, I won’t want it.”

Zhou Li dug into his pockets but only pulled out a handful of white and yellow coins. Today, he spent nearly all of his savings and didn’t have much money left.

Of course, knowing that Zhou Li didn’t have enough money, Gu Changheng watched him with a smile, curious about what he would do next.

“Just wait.”

“Hey, Ah Li, I was just joking!” Gu Changheng called out, but Zhou Li had already left the door.

A short while later, Zhou Li returned with a borrowed electric drill from a neighbor. He drilled holes in the middle of the 50 cents, leaving only a golden ring on the outer edge.

Zhou Li carefully presented this special ring to Gu Changheng, grinning as he knelt in front of the sofa. He took Gu Changheng’s right hand and slid the golden copper circle on his right ring finger.

Sitting on the sofa, Gu Changheng looked at the person kneeling before him with an almost pious attitude. As he glanced at the golden circle on his finger, a wave of emotion washed over him. He suddenly felt like he was really married.

This was his home.

All the beautiful futures Zhou Li had spoken of earlier felt real now, filling him with endless anticipation.

Gu Changheng began to hope that he could live a bit longer, at least long enough to accomplish all the things Zhou Li said they would do together.

A person who had been resigned to death now yearned for life.

However, the “ring” didn’t fit properly.

Zhou Li frowned as he tried to take it off Gu Changheng’s ring finger, but Gu Changheng suddenly curled his fingers to stop him.

Gu Changheng looked at him with a smile. “I like this ‘ring’ very much.”

Zhou Li furrowed his brow. “But it doesn’t fit.”

“I want this one,” Gu Changheng insisted.

Zhou Li didn’t argue further and said seriously, “When I earn money, I’ll buy you a real ring in the future.”

“Sure!”

That evening, Zhou Li cooked a large table of dishes, which was regarded as their wedding banquet. After the meal, Gu Changheng lay in bed, glancing at the metal ring in his palm and smiling to himself.

After washing the dishes, Zhou Li returned to the bedroom, turned off the lights, and held Gu Changheng close, saying, “Changheng, I still owe you a honeymoon trip. I’ll make it up to you when I earn some money.”

“Okay!”

In the darkness, Gu Changheng’s senses heightened. He could feel Zhou Li’s desire pressing against him. He thought they should do something special on their wedding night, so he reached out to grasp it.

Zhou Li’s voice turned hoarse. “Changheng!”
