RIACMET chapter 225

The Peacekeeper

Gao Xuyang’s special care unit was temporarily set up in the equipment room of Laboratory Building No. 3. The layout included a small room in the back.

Inside the equipment room, there was a hidden door that opened to a hallway several meters long. Gao Xuyang was in the room behind the alloy door at the end of the corridor.

Right now, Yang Kai was crouching outside the door, looking frustrated as he confessed everything. When he heard a voice, he turned and saw Jiang Nian. His eyes lit up.

“Jiang Nian, you’re right on time!”

Jiang Nian teased,

“It’s better to arrive at the right moment than right on time.”

Brother Kai was usually firm and reliable at work—quite the impressive type. It was rare to see him in such a pitiful state.

Yang Kai stood up and said hopelessly,

“Teacher Gao wants to divorce me. Please save me.”

Then, he turned around and knocked on the door.

“Xuyang, Jiang Nian is here. Please open the door.”

The knock was soft, like that of a wronged little husband begging for forgiveness. Still, there was no movement from inside.

“Divorce?”

Jiang Nian’s eyes widened. Oh wow, finally caught a big melon! He loved it!

There was no point in asking for the reason—this kind of drama wouldn’t end easily. Suppressing a grin, he said in a serious tone,

“Tell him that divorce isn’t in fashion during the apocalypse. The Civil Affairs Bureau got eaten by zombies.”

Gao Xuyang was absolutely adorable in this kind of situation. What a golden opportunity! Brother Kai was really hopeless!

Perhaps because they were from the younger group and had a teacher-student dynamic, they didn’t dare push each other too hard when they got upset?

Yang Kai fidgeted with his fingers, annoyed.

“He’s holding both of our marriage certificates, and I’m afraid he’ll tear them up in anger.”

If he had known this would happen, he wouldn’t have given the certificates to Teacher Gao.

The corners of Jiang Nian’s mouth curled up.

“Let him tear them. They’re fake anyway. Once the Civil Affairs Bureau is rebuilt, have him reissue them.”

Seeing Yang Kai stare at him earnestly, he asked again.

“Seriously? Brother Jing said that even if you and Teacher Gao had marriage certificates, they’re fake. At most, they’re just props for the mission.”

Yang Kai couldn’t hold it in anymore and finally confessed.

“Go ahead and laugh if you want. We’re brothers, and you nearly ended up in the same boat, too. Even if they’re fake, they’re still our only keepsake.”

“Hahaha…”

Jiang Nian burst out laughing. After a while, he cleared his throat and said seriously,

“I’m not trying to shame you, Brother Kai, but come on. Teacher Gao is so easy to trick in this state. No, I mean, he’s easily persuaded. And you still can’t manage? And you were thinking about flirting with my brother Jing?”

This was a rare opportunity—he had to rub it in a little.

Yang Kai’s expression was hard to describe.

“At the time, I was just thinking about Brother Jing. If it didn’t work out, at least two lonely people could be friends and talk about life. But Teacher Gao’s different.”

Jiang Nian smiled warmly.

“So my Brother Jing was just a substitute, huh?”

It was a shame. When he saw the two of them pretending to be a couple, he thought the stand-in romance led by Brother Jing was coming true. Turns out, he’d been wrong.

“Jiang Nian…”

Yang Kai held his forehead. This guy was clearly here to laugh at him today.

“Hehe, alright, alright. Focus on me now.”

Jiang Nian knew when to stop. He patted Yang Kai on the shoulder and walked forward. Just as he was about to knock on the door, his phone rang.

It was Chu Yi calling. Thinking that something might have happened to the soldiers they had just purified, Jiang Nian quickly asked,

“Brother Chu, what’s wrong?”

“Jiang Nian, don’t go see Teacher Gao today. He’s really angry.”

While Chu Yi was speaking, there was a loud beep from the nearby monitoring equipment, and it sounded like he was in a noisy place.

“Why?”

Jiang Nian glanced at Yang Kai beside him and lowered his hand, which was about to knock.

Chu Yi chuckled and said,

“Yang Kai scratched himself with Teacher Gao’s nail and got infected. You helped purify him, and the resulting antibodies were extremely powerful. When the lab professors saw the test results, they accidentally blurted it out in front of Teacher Gao. Even Minister Wang got mad.”

“…That serious, huh.”

Jiang Nian looked at Yang Kai, who was sighing beside him, and said firmly,

“All right then. Brother Kai forced and bribed me into helping him. It has nothing to do with me. He took that risk, so it makes sense for Teacher Gao and Minister Wang to be angry.”

Chu Yi replied.

“Minister Wang didn’t blame you. He already scolded Yang Kai. I’m just giving you a heads-up. Handle it however you like.”

“Got it. Thanks. Bye.”

Jiang Nian ended the call, looked at the closed door, then at Yang Kai, and turned to leave.

“Hey, Jiang Nian, don’t go!”

Yang Kai grabbed him.

“You have to help me!”

Jiang Nian pouted.

“What do you expect me to do? I’ll get in trouble if Brother Jing finds out about this.”

He had only just realized how serious the situation was.

“He probably already knows. My uncle must have told him by now. For the sake of your brothers, teammates, and fellow riders, please help me. Just get Teacher Gao to open the door. I’ll confess and apologize directly.”

Yang Kai said, clasping his hands together in a pleading gesture. Gao Xuyang didn’t speak much when he was angry. Unless they were face-to-face, Yang Kai couldn’t use his persuasive skills.

“…”

Jiang Nian felt a bit sorry for him. After thinking for a moment, he finally stepped forward and knocked on the door.

“Teacher Gao, it’s Jiang Nian. Could you open the door?”

Not long after, a cold, quiet voice came from behind the door.

“No… can’t.”

Jiang Nian turned to Yang Kai and continued.

“Come on, don’t stay mad. Brother Kai was infected with your nail, and his reaction is different from that of a regular zombie infection. Your level is too high. I’m not sure if I can fully purify the virus in him.”

Click!

Before he could finish, the door swung open. Gao Xuyang, now wearing a standard hospital gown, stood in the doorway and looked at them coldly.

“What did you say?”

Jiang Nian quickly changed his tune.

“I mean, now that things have turned out like this, you should forgive Brother Kai. He only did it because he loves you too much. If you keep ignoring him, he might actually get bitten by a zombie…”

After he finished, he realized something was off, but oh well. He hoped Teacher Gao wouldn’t mind. Lying really wasn’t his specialty.

“…”

Gao Xuyang didn’t say a word, but he turned and stared straight at Yang Kai.

“Teacher Gao, I was wrong.”

Yang Kai took the opportunity to enter the room and pull him inside.

Jiang Nian sensibly stopped at the door.

“I’ll come back tomorrow to purify you, Teacher Gao. It’s late, so I’ll head back for now. See you.”

With that, he helpfully shut the door behind them.

He was done being the peacekeeper. He was leaving. No more teamwork with Brother Kai.

Although Teacher Gao didn’t show much emotion, it was clear he was furious.

After sending Chu Yi a message to let him know he was heading back, he went downstairs. In the first-floor visitor area, however, he spotted Chu Yi and Cheng Jing reviewing Yang Kai’s physical report together.

It was past midnight. Brother Jing had finished his shift. Good timing—he came to pick him up.
