RIACMET chapter 49

Rejecting Moral Blackmail

Cheng Jing looked at Zhao Lei and blinked.

“You take this one.”

Then he helped the girl’s father walk a little farther away.

“…”

The girl looked at Cheng Jing, surprised. Zhao Lei took a towel blanket from the rescue team, wrapped her in it, then lifted her in his arms and said calmly:

“He’s married and allergic to women.”

Cheng Jing rolled his eyes but didn’t say anything else.

“…”

The girl was so surprised that she forgot to cry. After a moment, she stammered out her thanks.

The smell of blood and all the crying made more zombies come closer.

The rescue team and the uninjured survivors worked quickly to pull people and supplies out from under the collapsed bridge.

After Cheng Jing and the others left the girl with the medics, they went back into the rubble.

A storm of thunder and fire spread across a large area, quickly burning a swarm of zombies to ashes. As the ground shook, a few people who were buried in the cracks came out.

Ice froze more zombies in place, and chains of metal dragged aside rubble, pulling out both the living and the dead.

After Jiang Nian carried a baby to the medical staff, he saw a young woman knocked out near one of the bridge supports. Her leg was stuck through a metal rod.

She looked to be in her early twenties, quite beautiful, wearing nice clothes and bright lipstick. She obviously had a good life even though the world was ending.

She had been held protectively by a big, strong man.

Unfortunately, the man’s neck had been broken by a falling boulder. He was lying dead in a pool of blood. There were no bite marks or claw wounds on him, so he wasn’t going to turn into a zombie.

However, there were a few splatters of black blood around the woman’s injury. These were likely from when zombies were killed nearby.

Jiang Nian carefully pulled her leg free of the steel bar. After checking to see if anyone was watching, he wiped away the black blood with a tissue. Then, he used his purification ability on the wound, but he was careful to do it discreetly.

He wrapped her in a little gauze before carrying her out.

When he finally touched solid ground again, the rescue was almost over. They did everything they could to help the survivors.

The woman woke up slowly, her eyes looking blank. For some reason, Jiang Nian felt a little awkward. He explained her situation briefly, then let her sit down in an open area and called over the medical staff.

“…”

She didn’t say much as she listened, but when he turned to leave, she suddenly grabbed his jacket.

“You can’t leave. You saved me, so you have to take responsibility.”

“…”

Jiang Nian stopped moving. Even the medic with the face mask looked shocked.

The woman kept talking because she saw that he wasn’t responding.

“My boyfriend is dead. I’m hurt and don’t have any family around. You saved me, so of course you have to look after me now.”

She paused, brushing her hair back from her cheek.

“I don’t mind being your girlfriend.”

Her boyfriend had died protecting her, and she needed someone to rely on. Otherwise, how could a woman survive in this world?

“Ha ha.”

Jiang Nian was actually a little amused by her logic, which was a bit twisted. He took his jacket back and said coldly,

“I saved you out of basic decency. That doesn’t mean you should repay kindness with exploitation. You might not care, but I do. I’m married. Trying to seduce a married man is shameless—and besides, your boyfriend died to protect you. It’s disgusting that you’re already trying to latch onto the next victim.”

He had always thought of himself as polite and respectful towards women. He never wanted to embarrass a girl in public, but this woman was so outrageous, he refused to put up with it.

“If you didn’t want to be responsible, why did you save me in the first place? What’s the point of living if I have to keep going through this?”

The woman looked at the ring on his finger, and started crying.

People nearby started whispering and giving him judgmental looks, as if he were the one who’d wronged her.

“I was scared. I just wanted you to help me…”

“Why are you so heartless…”

“…”

She cried even more, looking as miserable as she could.

Jiang Nian looked upset. He thought sadly that he’d wasted his powers by using them to clean up her wound. He wished he had used them to clean up her brain instead.

He was about to leave when he heard voices around them—

He said that as an adult man, he shouldn’t worry so much. He said that if he had the ability, he should take care of her.

When she noticed the crowd shifting, she tried even harder, reaching out to tug on his clothes again.

“Get lost!”

Jiang Nian finally lost his temper. He stepped back to stay out of her reach and looked angrily at the religious people and women gossiping around her.

“Since you all care so much, why don’t you take her? What’s the point of acting generous when it’s my money they’re taking? With your high moral standards, I’m sure you could even convince the zombies not to eat you! Where was all this kindness when you were screaming for help earlier?”

His stern words immediately silenced them. Then he turned and gave the woman a fake smile.

“Here’s the deal: nobody owes anybody anything. If you want, you can just lie back down, and I’ll shovel some dirt over you!”

“Ugh…”

“Haha…”

The medic treating her injury couldn’t help but laugh, and others joined in. Not everyone was a fool, after all.

Soldiers from the rescue team arrived with their weapons, but Jiang Nian ignored them and kept going:

“Life is hard. Dying is the easiest thing in the world!”

“You…”

The woman’s face turned red and white, and she glared at him, ready to keep arguing.

But then someone else’s voice interrupted her.

“It’s the end of the world. Whether you live or die, nobody cares.”

Cheng Jing arrived with the others. He sounded cold, and his face looked darker than usual.

He had not taken his eyes off Jiang Nian for a second. The moment someone tried to trap him with this nonsense, Cheng Jing was there.

The woman looked up at him defiantly, but she lowered her head again when she met his intense gaze.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Cheng Jing take off his glove and saw the ring on his finger. She understood, and she was quiet.

“You don’t owe me anything. But if you try this again, I’ll throw you into the zombie pit. And I mean that.”

Cheng Jing didn’t look at her again. He grabbed Jiang Nian’s wrist and pulled him back to their group.

The others looked at her with disdain before following.

Liao Yu was so angry that he took a few steps back, then turned around and said angrily:

“If you can’t speak properly, you’d be better off donating your mouth to the zombies. We don’t hit women, but we don’t show any mercy to fools, either.”

Then he ignored the soldiers’ frowns and left without a second thought.

Honestly, he was disgusted. Someone like her thought she could humiliate their “Godfather”? Ha!

Li Kaiyun and his sons looked at each other and shook their heads. They knew they were very lucky to have received Jiang Nian’s help.

The woman watched them leave, and she felt angry.

These people weren’t from the official rescue teams. They were strong and well-prepared, as their gear and attitude showed.

She thought she could easily manipulate the man who saved her, but she didn’t realize he was gay!

Liao Yu told Huang Qian and the two girls what had happened earlier.

Not to mention Huang Qian and Li Shuhui—even Xiaoya understood the woman’s intentions right away.

It was clear that she thought Jiang Nian was easy to control, but she didn’t expect Jiang Nian to kick her so hard that it broke her nose. She deserved it!
