Amane, who was running up the stairs two steps at a time leading to the rooftop, felt a sudden surge of heat as he reached the landing.

(It’s starting…)

With that thought, his entire body surged with heat. Sweat burst from his pores in a flash. Feeling the loud thumping of his heart resonate in his eardrums, he sat down on the stairs. He placed the bottle of mineral water he had bought from the vending machine downstairs next to him and pulled a PTP pack from the back pocket of his pants. His hands had already begun to tingle as he struggled to open the bottle cap. Suppressing his growing frustration, he somehow twisted the cap off and, with trembling fingers, pressed a pill from the PTP sheet. He tossed the pill into his mouth and washed it down with the mineral water, drinking deeply afterward.

“…..Phew…..”

Wiping the water that spilled from his mouth with the back of his hand, he reassured himself.

(It’s okay now.)

Although the suppressant wouldn’t take effect immediately, he felt much calmer mentally. He knew it would start working in about ten minutes. Still, his heart was racing.

“It came earlier than expected. Damn it… every time… it’s hard on my heart.”

Even though he’d experienced over a hundred heats since his first, he still couldn’t get used to the moment it all began.

That sudden feeling of his body being taken over by something else.

The sense of unease that he wasn’t himself anymore.

The uncontrollable changes—sweating, overheating, dry mouth, the smell…

Still, he was lucky that his cycle was stable and almost never deviated from the expected date. His heat lasted exactly one week. And after a three-week break, the next heat would arrive right on schedule.

Some omegas, however, had irregular cycles. Their heats could last anywhere from three to ten days. And their cycles could be as frequent as twice a month or as rare as every two months.

If he’d had such an irregular cycle, it would have been impossible for him to continue working as a detective.

While it was possible to take pills in advance as a preventative measure, he experienced severe headaches as a side effect when taking them outside of heat. He’d tried it once in the beginning. But the pain was so intense that he was bedridden for a day, unable to move. There was no way he could work like that, especially as a detective who frequently worked outside.

(That stuff really is a potent drug.)

Not being an expert, he didn’t fully understand how the pills suppressed heat. But he knew they worked by forcibly interfering with nature. It was no wonder they were so strong. The fact that omegas had relatively short lifespans might not be entirely unrelated to the mandatory use of the pill. The government tended to cover up inconvenient truths, after all.

Still, with no deviation in his cycle and years of experience under his belt, he had developed a sense of when it would start. It wasn’t something logical—just a feeling.

Today, too, as the scheduled day approached, he had that feeling around five in the evening. So, he left the detective division floor and headed for the rooftop.

If it started in the presence of his colleagues, even if he took a pill immediately, a small amount of pheromones would still leak out during the ten minutes it took for the pill to kick in. His colleagues were betas, so they weren’t as sensitive to omega pheromones as alphas were. But they would still sense something was off. To avoid the risk of being found out, he needed to move to a place without people before it began. Since the officers at the D-East Station were always busy, no one came up to the rooftop outside of lunchtime. So, whenever his heat was about to start while on duty, he would usually take refuge in the rooftop shed.

(It was the same that time, too…)

That day, too, was his scheduled date. In the morning, he felt like it was about to start. So he headed up to the rooftop shed, took his pill, and lay down. While waiting for it to take effect, he lit a cigarette to relieve some stress. At that moment, he heard the creaking sound of the door opening. His heart thudded, beating an uneasy rhythm.

Who could it be at this hour?

Frozen by this unexpected situation, he suddenly heard a phone ringing sharply.

―――…Hello, Mizuki?

The person who answered the phone was a young man. It was a voice he didn’t recognize, low yet clear.

―――What is it? …If it’s not important, can we talk later? I’m working right now… I’m hanging up.

The curt tone of his words actually hinted at intimacy. If they weren’t close, he wouldn’t be able to speak so coldly. A lover, perhaps? Or maybe an ex-girlfriend who still kept pestering him after their breakup?

Without meaning to, Amane started eavesdropping. It was an instinctive habit as a detective. His thoughts wandered as he speculated about unnecessary things. Before he knew it, his heart rate had slowed. The sweat began to dry.

The pill was working. He was fine now.

Just as Amane felt relieved, the sharp ringing of the phone cut through the air again. Alright, time to chase off this intruder. With that in mind, he pushed himself up. He turned toward the source of the ringing and shouted, “So noisy!” It was half an act, half a venting of frustration for startling him.

―――Piripiripiripi, shut the hell up! Waking me up when I’m trying to sleep!

The young man must not have expected anyone else to be around. He stood there, stunned. His face was a mix of surprise. Amane had never seen him before.

Though he didn’t know him, he could tell right away that the man was someone special.

With flawless good looks, a perfectly proportioned body, and the kind of clothing that clearly indicated quality, he was the picture of a man in his prime—radiating energy and vitality.

The sight of this golden-aura, handsome man standing on the rooftop of a run-down police station was bizarre, to say the least. Amane would later learn the reason behind this strange feeling firsthand…

―――Who the hell are you?

Ignoring his question, the man walked toward Amane with graceful movements. He was unflinching even after being yelled at. He looked up at Amane from where he stood by the shed and introduced himself with confidence.

―――I’ve just been assigned to the Downtown East Police Station as of today. My name is Kariya Kouki.
