“The truth is, my brother still hasn’t found his soulmate. There’s another party scheduled for this Sunday. What if we invite Kourogi to that party?”
Amane stopped fiddling with his earring and looked at Kouki’s sharply chiselled face from the side.
“Can you actually do that?”
“If I explain the situation to my eldest brother and ask for his help, I believe it’s possible to add Kourogi to the guest list. If the invitation comes from my brother, Keiki Shutou, it’s highly likely that Kourogi will accept. After all, someone who went as far as to start a talent agency is probably quite ambitious and vain. Those kinds of people don’t miss chances to get closer to the upper echelons. Once we have confirmation that Kourogi will attend, you and I could infiltrate the party and make contact with him. What do you think?”
Amane’s lips curled up at Kouki’s proposal.
“Looks like you’re actually useful for a change.”
“For a change? For a change…?” Kouki repeated, looking disgruntled. But Amane wagged his finger in front of his face, going “tsk, tsk.”
“Just take the compliment, all right?”

Having decided on a course of action, they wasted no time.
Right there, Kouki contacted his brother Keiki, explained the situation, and arranged for Kourogi to be added to the guest list for the party to be held at the Shutou residence on Sunday night. Normally, invitations were sent by post. But this time, due to time constraints, they decided to send it as an email attachment. To avoid being mistaken for a prank or scam, the invitation would be sent from Keiki Shutou’s personal email address.
About thirty minutes later, they received a message from Keiki saying, “I’ve sent the email to Kourogi.”
*Brrring.*
While waiting inside the car parked in a pay-by-the-hour parking lot downtown, Kouki’s phone buzzed with an incoming message. He quickly opened it.
“It’s from my brother. It looks like Kourogi has responded and accepted the invitation,” Kouki’s voice rose with excitement
Hearing this, Amane clenched his fist. “Yes!”
He was surprised at how eagerly Kourogi had taken the bait. But being directly invited to a party hosted by a prestigious Alpha family’s head was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. From Kourogi’s perspective, he couldn’t afford to let this chance slip away. He probably responded in a hurry to avoid missing out.
The target had walked right into the trap. Now, all that remained was how to handle him.
While Amane cracked his knuckles in the passenger seat, Kouki, who had been so full of excitement earlier, suddenly looked concerned and asked hesitantly, “About the party… what kind of attire are you planning to wear, Honjou-san?”
“Attire?”
Amane hadn’t given his outfit a single thought. So the unexpected question caught him off guard.
“…Is this no good?” he asked, tugging at the neckline of the stretched-out T-shirt he was wearing.
Kouki sighed. “…As I suspected.”
“What’s wrong with it? Got a problem?” Amane challenged.
“Yes, I do,” Kouki replied, surprisingly firmly. He began to list the reasons with a serious expression.
“That outfit will make you stand out in a bad way and will make you the centre of attention at the venue, which could put Kourogi on guard. For events like this, the dress code for men is typically a tuxedo.”
“A tuxedo, huh?” Amane grimaced.
“You don’t have one?”
“Of course I don’t have one. I only own one suit.”
The only decent outfit he had hanging in his wardrobe other than his regular clothes was the formal police uniform he’d been issued when he joined the force.
“You have a suit, then? What kind of suit is it?” Kouki asked.
“What kind…? It’s just a regular black suit. My supervisor from my rookie days told me, ‘You should have one for weddings and funerals’. So I bought it reluctantly with my first paycheck. But I’ve only worn it once.”
While Kouki’s custom-tailored three-piece suit was in a league of its own, most of the detectives in their department wore suits except for the forensic team. As public servants, there was an unspoken pressure to maintain a proper appearance to reassure citizens.
However, when Amane continued to dress like a street gang member, his superiors had complaints. But in Amane’s opinion, wearing a suit and leather shoes in the downtown area was the true definition of standing out, making him painfully out of place. It was like broadcasting to criminals, ‘I’m a detective’, which was nothing but a disadvantage in investigations.
He had maintained his stance against this pressure. And, thanks to the support of his then-supervisor who recognized his point of view, as well as the results he produced in investigations, the complaints eventually ceased…
“The black suit is versatile and, as your supervisor suggested, you may have future opportunities to wear it to formal events. As long as your body shape doesn’t change, it won’t go to waste. However, for this occasion, I don’t think it’s suitable,” Kouki declared.
After dismissing the black suit, Kouki fell silent. He appeared to be deep in thought for a while. Suddenly, he said, “I’ve got it. Let’s go.”
He started the engine and gripped the steering wheel.
“Huh? What do you mean by that? Where are we going?” Amane demanded.
Without answering, Kouki pulled the sleek two-seater out of the parking lot. Sitting in the passenger seat, Amane raised his voice, “Hey!” as they drove away.
“Where are we going? Answer me!”
“You’ll know when we get there.”
With just that reply, Kouki faced forward and focused on driving, refusing to provide any further information. It irritated Amane to be at Kouki’s mercy. But when it came to the matter of Kourogi, Kouki was his only hope for now. With no other choice, Amane swallowed his frustration and turned to face the car window.
As he settled into the smooth ride—Kouki was, in fact, an incredibly skilled driver—Amane began mulling over ways to approach Kourogi. Eventually, he noticed a change in the scenery outside the window.
The chaotic, cluttered cityscape gradually gave way to an orderly and well-maintained area, with lush greenery and parks catching his eye. The buildings within the spacious plots were mostly low-rise, allowing the sky above to feel vast and open.
(The sky feels so wide…)
The colours and heights of the buildings were controlled, giving the area a sense of unity. The streets were wide, spotless, and felt even cleaner due to the low volume of traffic. Every car they passed was undoubtedly a luxury vehicle.
