“Huh? What are you talking about? There’s no way I could enjoy myself in this overly glamorous, totally out-of-place setting.”

Amane snapped in frustration at Kouki’s off-target comment. But Kouki wasn’t backing down.

“You’re not out of place at all, Honjou-san. In fact, you fit in just as much as anyone here, if not—”

“Hello, Kouki-kun.”

A voice interrupted from behind. They turned to see a refined gentleman in his late forties standing there.

“Seito-san. It’s been a while.”

“Indeed, it has. You seem well. My mother is actually here tonight as well.”

“Aunt Seiko is here?”

“Yes, but she’s quite frail now. She’s resting on the sofa over there. She’s been asking to see you, so I’ve been looking for you.”

“I understand. I’ll go greet her.”

“Much appreciated. Sorry to trouble you.”

“Of course.”

After replying, Kouki turned to Amane.

“I need to greet my great-aunt from my mother’s side. Could you wait here for a bit?”

“Yeah, go ahead,” Amane said.

“I’ll be back soon, so don’t move, okay?”

“I got it.”

“Promise you won’t move?”

After Kouki pressed him insistently, he walked off with his relative, quickly disappearing into the crowd. Now alone, Amane quietly moved to the edge of the hall and slipped behind a large vase filled with flowers.

Hiding behind the voluminous floral arrangement, he positioned himself where the other guests couldn’t easily spot him, yet he still had a clear view of the entrance. It was the perfect place to observe those entering and leaving the room and to gather information.

Blending into the background, Amane silenced his presence and focused on the conversations around him.

“Oh, it’s been a while. I haven’t seen you around lately…”

“I wasn’t feeling well, so I’ve been recuperating at my villa.”

“Ah, I see. But you look well now.”

“Haha, yes. Attending lively events like this rejuvenates me. All these beautiful young ladies are a treat for the eyes.”

“Wait, hold on… did you get some work done?”

“Could you tell? I went all out and got some maintenance done just for today. I mean, chances like this don’t come twice!”

“True. I mean, for us Omegas to be invited to an Alpha party—especially one hosted by the Shutou family—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!”

“I know, right? My heart’s racing. What if I’m Keiki-sama’s fated ‘soulmate’…?”

“I get it! I couldn’t sleep at all last night. But even if I’m not, just being close to the real Keiki-sama is enough to make me happy.”

“Exactly!”

“Hey, do you think Keiki-sama’s ‘soulmate’ is among the invited Omegas tonight?”

“Who knows? Either way, it’s enviable. If I could marry Keiki-san, I wish I were born an Omega.”

“Don’t be silly. Marriage is a different story. There’s no way the Shutou family, with all their focus on lineage, would accept an Omega as a wife. They just want them to bear children. Apparently, when ‘soulmates’ have children, the offspring inherit superior genes. That’s why they’re inviting all these suitable-age Omegas. But the official wife will definitely be chosen from a respectable Alpha family.”

“So… does that mean we still have a chance at marriage?”

“Of course. If that weren’t the case, there wouldn’t be so many single Alphas gathered here today, would there?”

Eavesdropping on these conversations while observing people had become second nature to Amane over the years. It was essentially spying. But it was an efficient way to gather information.

From his monitoring, Amane concluded that no matter the setting—whether it was a high-society Alpha party or the crowded streets of downtown—human desires didn’t change much.

The categories might differ, but the wishes were the same.

They wanted to feel special. To be loved. To be chosen. To become someone important.

It was easy to scoff and dismiss such desires as foolish. But Amane knew he had no right to laugh at them.

Not when he was living someone else’s life, hiding his true identity.

Not when he was pretending to be a member of the elite.

(In fact, they’re far better than me for being honest about what they want.)

Perhaps because he was so self-aware, Amane felt an intense urge to smoke. But the hall was non-smoking, and Kouki had informed him beforehand that smoking was only allowed in the billiard room. With no other choice, Amane stepped away from the vase and grabbed a champagne glass from a passing waiter’s tray. He downed it in one gulp.

As the liquid slid down his throat and into his stomach, his body immediately warmed up.

It was as good as Kouki had claimed. Amane had never tasted such delicious champagne before.

(Maybe just one more)

He reached for another glass to replace the empty one but stopped just short when he spotted a tall figure rising above the crowd.

(Kariya… he’s back.)

Amane’s gaze was naturally drawn to him, not just because of Kouki’s striking appearance.

It was as if Kouki was glowing, radiating a bright, positive, powerful aura that seemed to illuminate the space around him.

Guests gravitated toward Kouki, calling out to him. Each time, he would stop, engaging in polite conversation. When he spoke to an elderly woman, he gently took her hand. With children, he knelt down to meet their gaze. Everyone who interacted with Kouki smiled.

His charm seemed to work on everyone, not just young women.

It took Kouki nearly ten minutes to cross a distance of only about ten metres, charming people of all ages along the way. When he finally returned, he apologised, “Sorry for taking so long.”

“Quite the popular guy,” Amane remarked sarcastically, annoyed with himself for sounding bitter. But he was unable to be straightforward.

“It’s been a while since I’ve attended a party like this, so people were curious,” Kouki said with an awkward smile, seemingly unfazed by Amane’s snide remark.

“Been a while, huh?”

“I lived in a dorm during my time at the police academy, and now work keeps me busy,” Kouki explained.

That made sense. When a case was active, detectives didn’t have the luxury of time, whether on duty or off. Sometimes, they even had to go on stakeouts. It wasn’t a life that left room for attending elegant parties and sipping champagne.

“I took the opportunity to greet my great-aunt and do a quick check of the hall. But it seems like Kourogi hasn’t shown up yet,” Kouki reported. Even while charming the crowd, he had been observing everything that needed to be seen.
